  • We know you've been dying for us to give you a shootout between the SRX and the Mach Z. Unfortunately we ran out of snow in the spring and couldn't complete a race and sadly we don't have them on the ground now BUT we do have a 2022 Ski-Doo Renegade Turbo R and a 2022 Arctic Cat Thundercat! Here's how it went down between these two turbo beasts...

    Brand loyalty is the dumbest thing you can do with snowmobiles. They all have good sleds and bad sleds. I've had all of the brands. They are all very fun and sometimes in different ways.

    • @bitrage.
      @bitrage. Год назад +1

      I don't think it's "dumb" I mean the only reason it might be to you is because your technically knowledgeable enough to be able to decifer each sled individually, but another person without that knowledge can only go based upon there previous experiences with this or that brand... Even if they are semi confident in there knowledge, spending big money on a new sled , ya need that brand loyalty to give confidence to buyers and potential buyers.

    Every year in New York State they have a shoot out test with dyno testing and grass drag runs. The two categories are out of the box and dealer prepped.
    Here’s an excerpt from a recent test:
    Not-So-Twin Turbos
    The Turbo class included two sleds this year - an Arctic Cat ZR 9000 Thundercat and a Ski-Doo Renegade 900 ACE Turbo. They are marketed to different classes of riders and fall in different power categories, so this isn’t exactly a fair fight, but it’s interesting to see the numbers for their own merit.
    Both had 137-inch tracks with 1.25-inch lugs. On the Dyno-Tech dyno, the lake-racer oriented Thundercat spun up an even 200 hp, while the trail cruiser Renegade 900 ACE Turbo logged 160 - putting it more in line with the 800-850 class.
    Obviously the TCat came in with the highest speed. In 600 and 1000 feet.
    As I said, traction is the issue.

About 20 years ago, my 93 Thundercat with Hooper racing 1050 (mid 190's HP) trail engine did a radar checked 113 mph in less than ideal conditions on Rangley lake Maine. Max studded track. (240 ?) I think that many studs slowed it down quite a bit. Also M-10 skid slowed it down. Engine was always completely reliable. Still have it.

      Thats what I thought too. Was still learning what worked at the time. Fact is the M10 was a comfort skid for trail riding and it was far better than the stock skid. So what your saying is that with say half the amount of studs and a stock skid the sled would be as fast or faster than the current "fast" sleds. Got a question to the inaccuracy of gauge speed vs real speed. If these gauges are fluff factoring speed this means all sleds out there have more mileage than actual mileage 🤔? I had a laugh one year with my viper as it would never tell me I was doing over 90km/h when in reality the skidoo’s I was running with were well into triple digits…always said it was a good resale tactic hah.

      @@oldwrench4213 Safety and Regulation man. The only thing they are doing is making your 0-100mph go by a lot faster. But four strokes are also better on fuel, emissions, and in the reliability department. You will probably see +20k miles out of a four stroke so sure the cost is up front but I’d love to see an 850 hit 20k without substantial maintenance.

    @Michael Fortier
    Greetings Michael,
    I have not had the same experience as what you described. The TCats and Sidewinders both obviously have the same Yamaha 998 Turbo. These are the two sleds that Ive seen that absolutely require traction solutions, AKA studs. That’s if you really want to see what they’re capable of.
    I have seen numerous dyno tests and the level of horsepower and torque produced by the 998 turbo was astonishing in stock form. Most of the 998’s were kicking out north of 210, with the highest I’ve seen at 214.
    Chassis and suspension certainly plays a part, but you must have traction or you really won’t see a real difference. Many times I’ve seen the Sidewinder and TCat take out the very sleds you mentioned. That’s where both had the right traction set up.
    As I’ve mentioned, if you participated in a drag race for money, would you challenge a machine with 30+ more horsepower than yours? Would you?
    In the wend it’s about having fun. That’s for sure, but the debate continues.

    One thing I noticed about my sidewinder is it doesn't seem to just top out. I was on a long seasonal road hard pack groomed trail and just kept on it I know the speedo is not true but that's all I had to go on and it kept climbing over long distance it doesn't climb fast at the end but does keep going when I first started thought it was topped out at 112mph on the gage but I just kept in it and crouched like I was on a sport bike and it climbed all the way up to 125mph on the speedo before I had to slow for a curve. Just curious what your GPS would say if you had such a long straight to just keep going
