I'm curious about something. Does Asus come out of the box with the advanced display settings set to the high refresh, or did you have to change the Windows default from 60 to the correct 300? I've seen far too many people with high refresh monitors still using the default 60 without realizing it does not auto adjust to the highest refresh. I look forward to the day we can have incredible performance like this with quieter or no fans. One of these days!
The one I’m going for has 4 modes - I’m going for the R7 3070 QHD 165hz version. It has silent, performance, turbo and manual. But I’m getting the Scar version
Well for gaming laptops you usually want to be on performance or at least balanced fan speed or else its most likely gonna hit temp limit and begin to throttle
All of the strix g and scar laptops have 5 modes. 1. Windows 2. Silent 3. Performance 4. Turbo 5. Manual (only available when on A/C) (I also personally prefer silent because although you get about 20 to 30% performance loss, the fans are much quieter and it is actually silent when browsing. Also it consumes less power when on battery)
I’m looking at getting one in 2023, the g17 with Ryzen 9, I’d probably upgrade to 32gb ram way in the future, but it looks perfect for a laptop only desktop, thinking an additional monitor, keyboard and mouse, amazing for programmes and editing, design, and some gaming :D If this is still going to be an excellent choice that will last say the next 8-10 years with upgrades, then let me know my money will be well spent, 🇬🇧 Woo! Sweet laptop by ASUs rog strix
I upgraded from acer helios to G17 . The fan are quite than my previous laptop in gaming. The only drawback are the webcam which is not available on this model.
Debating on this and the Zephyrus SE. reports are the fans are quieter and cooling is better on the smaller model, interestingly enough. Don’t suppose you have data/friends with that comparison?
can you play games in turbo mode ? i use g17 713 too but all my games crash when i play them in turbo mode, i can only play games in window, performance and manual mode with gpu clock 60mhz and gpu mem clock 60 mhz
Interesting that ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 G743QS-HG130T (3080 version) have better packaging (more looks like Zephyrus box). Also it have totally different keyboard (mechanical and layout is different). Also fan noise is different on this model, no high-pinch sounds :)

i had the old version i got that high pitch sound to and the fan noise omfg... i returned it right away!!! but its not only asus who have that high pitch sound its other brands to.. but they should really get rid of that shit!

I have this laptop and i am using it for a week now and i will say it is a really good laptop, the fan noice is not at all a hinder . Get it when u can
12:10 Yeah, "Big" is relative. Modern 17" laptops are physically the size of 15" of just a few years ago, thanks to thin bezels. It's size was something I had huge concerns up until I received it, the only reason for that being me being stuck in the past, still thinking that 17" laptops gotta be huge. Nope. As for the back panel, I had to remove it a couple times in the past few days while gradually upgrading ram and ssd (a note to others, at least my model does NOT support M.2 SATA SSDs, only M.2 NVME drives, at least I did not find any ways to enable it in bios), just "unclick" it carefully along all edges, and then open it like a book. Look at LED ribbon cables, they will allow it to open to one of the sides completely without disconnecting. +1 to Ansh Arora and everyone else saying that fan noise is not bad at all. For example I was upgrading to this laptop from my Node 304 desktop PC with i5 8600K and GTX1080, all Noctua fans, main being NH14 monster (barely fits in the case lol). Under load with fans at top speeds in terms of dB I think they were about equal, with laptop having a slightly higher pitched sound, which is a tad more annoying than desktop, but not that much really. After just a bit of listening I realied that if I did not have my headphones on I would be annoyed by both of them in the same way. HOWEVER, with all the power that this laptop is packing and the one-button ability to change it's power mode most of the time even in some games it does not break a sweat and in the end it has to ramp up it's fans way less than my previous desktop. I'm also planning on getting a cooling pad for my desk setup, it should help keep it cooler and make it use it's fans even less. And overall the most noise that comes from the laptop's cooling is not from it's fans per-se, it's from air moving, I did not hear any motor whine or anything like that. At least now as it's new. We'll see how it goes.
@@braukwood925 All great, except for one annoying 'bug' that makes the entire desktop freeze for like half a second, on average once a day, most notably while watching videos in the browser. So far it's more of an annoyance, the only thing where I believe it would really matter is when working with live audio performances, that stutter could ruin a take, but other than that it does not seem to affect anything internally, like audio _recording_ seems to be working fine during the stutter. Also this does not show up in Linux, only on Windows. There are discussions of this issue on Reddit and LTT forums, seems like quite a few people have it with 2021 G17 Ryzen laptops. So far the general belief is there is some chipset firmware bug or something like that. But while it is more of an annoyance than a problem for my daily use of it, and one that's rare enough to not even get mad about, it's a serious enough issue for me to NOT recommend anyone to buy this particular model. I hear that Lenovo Legions are all the rage when it comes to alternatives. That said I LOVE the mechanical keyboard on G17. It's clicky but not too loud, and I like the tactile feel of it. And I am daily driving Cherry MX Browns keyboard, so it's not like I don't have anything to compare it to.
@@braukwood925 It's not a bad laptop, it has great awesome specs, mechanical keyboard that very few laptops have, and it's price for it's specs is awesome. Literally the only gripe with it is this random stutter\freezing issue, and as far as I can tell it's a lottery. So you could go for it, just if you notice any stutters like the ones I'm talking about - RMA it right away. And be ready for it.
Please suggest among these laptops (Macbook 16M pro m1, Dell XPS 17, Aero 15 & Asus Gstrix 17 Ryzen 9) which is best for huge loads of work for around 8-12 hours per day for 4k, 6k, & 8k video editing in the premiere, colour correction in Davinci Resolve, also using after effects, photoshop & other content creating software.

but only gaming laptop version, legion, tuf, nitro, alienware etc vivobook, aspire, inspiron and friends usually use rather crappy paste, youll get noticeable temp improvement w smth like nt-h2
How long the battery lasts? We just got it - no Windows yet and the battery drops 20% for 20 minutes? Is it because of the keyboard lights? I don't think it's normal.
My two MacBook Pro’s 2015 & 2021 are super loud when I am actually doing something like running multiple socket containers. My MSI laptop is only louder when it is running games otherwise it is normally quieter... if it is louder than a Mac book that is horrendous.

Hmm, the fan noise is interesting. Mine is dead quiet. Coming from a 10875H + 2070 Super, this thing is a breath of fresh air. I honestly wonder if there is something wrong with mine its so quiet. What someone needs to develop is a 'laptop' docking station which docks to those back sockets and converts USB3.2.1.56.2 etc to Thunderbolt out on the back. If small enough you could leave the 'dock' on.
the fan noise isnt that bad...waaay better than the hi pitched ones. In other laptops ive had. I have a 60% keyboard and a usb dac....as well as logitech receivers...so 3 usb ports is already a primary need of mine these days ill need a type c dock.
The last gen Strix hero 3 was worse with the led lighting, it had two ribbon cables and if you tried to pull up the locking arm on the connector even with your finger nail, it would break. In mine I ended up putting double sided tape on a small foam pad to keep pressure on the connectors just for the lights to continue to work. Cabled should have been wider, with a better connector like a keyboad connector etc. Or spring based cable less contact pads.

I just got this laptop and I'm bummed that the 🔌 is way too big for any of my 5A sockets at home. And I can only use the 15A socket right now which unfortunately is only in the kitchen.
Is it okay for me to use a 6a to 16a adapter for the laptop charger?
Thanks
Did you find any fix ?
@@adithyan.suresh yes I simply bought a 5a to 15A 3 pin converter from a local electrical store. It costs only rs. 100
The max power the laptop is from 120 to 200W.
Whereas a 5A socket can handle load till 1500W
I hope this helps
Great review. I wonder what the easter egg in the right vent is supposed to stand for. You can see the MMVI but not sure what that is supposed to mean besides 2006. Keep the videos rolling!
If I’m not wrong, that is the year Asus started to use the ROG branding.
One of these days!
it shouldnt if you did fresh install or bnib unit
Those are loud fans but hopefully keeps the temps low enough to game for many hours straight without losing max performance.
I thought they have different modes for the fans, like performance, silent and so on
The one I’m going for has 4 modes - I’m going for the R7 3070 QHD 165hz version. It has silent, performance, turbo and manual. But I’m getting the Scar version
Well for gaming laptops you usually want to be on performance or at least balanced fan speed or else its most likely gonna hit temp limit and begin to throttle
All of the strix g and scar laptops have 5 modes.
1. Windows
2. Silent
3. Performance
4. Turbo
5. Manual (only available when on A/C)
(I also personally prefer silent because although you get about 20 to 30% performance loss, the fans are much quieter and it is actually silent when browsing. Also it consumes less power when on battery)
@@MadCaddyStandard after getting it tell me about the battery life
I’m looking at getting one in 2023, the g17 with Ryzen 9, I’d probably upgrade to 32gb ram way in the future, but it looks perfect for a laptop only desktop, thinking an additional monitor, keyboard and mouse, amazing for programmes and editing, design, and some gaming :D
If this is still going to be an excellent choice that will last say the next 8-10 years with upgrades, then let me know my money will be well spent, 🇬🇧
Woo! Sweet laptop by ASUs rog strix
am planning to get one , its 1k CAD on marketplace and only 2 year old
I upgraded from acer helios to G17 . The fan are quite than my previous laptop in gaming. The only drawback are the webcam which is not available on this model.
Thanks for the Review ☺️, I don't care about the Noisy Fan. The Performance of the Laptop is the Most important for me Especially in Editing Videos.
the high pitch sound is torture to listen at it goes trough your headset to!
Debating on this and the Zephyrus SE. reports are the fans are quieter and cooling is better on the smaller model, interestingly enough. Don’t suppose you have data/friends with that comparison?
1:00 The sticker placement bothers me :(
Great video! You should do more gaming laptops reviews. I enjoy your video style.
can you play games in turbo mode ? i use g17 713 too but all my games crash when i play them in turbo mode, i can only play games in window, performance and manual mode with gpu clock 60mhz and gpu mem clock 60 mhz
that fan noise is like a distant waterfall or faucet fully open.
Great point regarding Thunderbolt 3. I want to be able to use my CalDigit TS3 Plus for my next gaming laptop.
I love this man , keep going
hey, looking into buying this model, but the 1To storage is a little lacking for me
my question is about the 2nd M2 slot
is it Sata or NVME ?
if i buy a ssd to go with it i would like it to fit straight away and not have to mind the issues that could go with it
i know this is a video that isn't very new, but all information i can find about this laptop doesn't specify this
6:04 is the fan really that loud? It's no PS4 Pro lol.
i had the old version i got that high pitch sound to and the fan noise omfg... i returned it right away!!! but its not only asus who have that high pitch sound its other brands to.. but they should really get rid of that shit!
I have one of these and my fan noise is probably the same volume but I don't have that high pitch you have. You might have a shoddy model. That's not saying much for their QC although, I love my laptop it works so flawlessly and the rog software rocks. Also mine got a second usb c.
I already have a pretty big fan over my head hanging from the ceiling ...and now that fan has found it's true purpose in life I think. lol
I got my yesterday and I dont think that the cooler noise is so bad. Sure it´s loud at performance mode but acceptable.
Thermals?...6:10 Unless I was a gamer and willing to wear headphones I think that fan noise would drive me round the bend!
I have this laptop and i am using it for a week now and i will say it is a really good laptop, the fan noice is not at all a hinder . Get it when u can
Great review man!
How is it holding up man?
@@nixellion I really appreciate the in depth response man! All of my research has pointed me to this laptop but I’ll check out some Lenovos too!
Hey I really respect you are doing great work just be little gentle(0:08) thanks for the review
This was a very well done video, nice job
I have the 3060 version and I have very little fan noise. I can't tell the fans are on. ?????
Please suggest among these laptops (Macbook 16M pro m1, Dell XPS 17, Aero 15 & Asus Gstrix 17 Ryzen 9) which is best for huge loads of work for around 8-12 hours per day for 4k, 6k, & 8k video editing in the premiere, colour correction in Davinci Resolve, also using after effects, photoshop & other content creating software.
“Everyday Dad” buys a new laptop and immediately starts taking screws out and opening it up?
most gaming laptop uses good thermal paste, even liquid metal, no need any maintenance, at least while its still under warranty
also upgrading rams and ssd isnt considered breaking warranty afaik
but only gaming laptop version, legion, tuf, nitro, alienware etc
vivobook, aspire, inspiron and friends usually use rather crappy paste, youll get noticeable temp improvement w smth like nt-h2
So , how are the bottom RGB lights ? 😑
The only thing im concern of, it doesn't have a built in webcam. But other than that, definitely recommended for gaming and editing 👍
Staring at the Asus UK website trying to work out the difference between the Rog Strix g17 and the Rog Strix Scar g17.. £100 difference, the same specification? Anyone shed some light?
Excellent review. Thank you! I was interested in a purchase until you identified the fan noise. Like everyone, I want both power and quiet while I edit video.
You want to have your cake and eat it too
get a macbook air then, (no, it's not a joke)
I bought Asus Strix G17 a few months ago and so far I have only one complaint: top left side of the keyboard gets HOT under serious gaming. NOTHING ELSE!
uh my titan quest farm
When is this restocking?
end of march i guess
Guys quick question kinda random but...which website you use to purchase it if you got one? Looking for best price out there 😭 Thanks 🙏 For the ones that live in us only
Hmm, the fan noise is interesting. Mine is dead quiet. Coming from a 10875H + 2070 Super, this thing is a breath of fresh air. I honestly wonder if there is something wrong with mine its so quiet. The GPU normally sits at 82c after 10-15m of play. But even maxed out, its really quiet compared to other gaming laptops.
So how is the laptop now
@@thecompetitor4418 I actually had to RMA it. It ruined a brand new 2TB SSD, kept corrupting windows installs, and would have random power offs. New one seems to be better. 3 weeks in without a serious issue (had a windows update corruption issue, but managed to fix that)
Thx for the Info. For the negative point 1 and 2 i gotta say i couldnt care less. And for the fan noise i usually use headohones. So it seems this sucker is the perfect pick for me. 🥳
What is the difference in this laptop and the new zephyrus g15, besides the screen size and resolution?
It comes with a slightly better version gpu
@@hiloshee I guess the strix has the MaxP and the Zephyrus has the MaxQ?
I believe the zephyrus comes with the lower power card as it only goes to 100watts
If that one is the most powerful, then try the Zephyrus G15 Duo with the 3080... That thing is absolutely insane
Dope review bro
I hear the speakers are pretty decent in this lappy. Do the fans quieten right down if you're only watching a movie? how did you find the audio experience overall?
both are very pleasing and considered highend, i mean real highend sound
OMG THE FAN NOISE
Sir could you please make a video of all the tests after updating the current bios, vbios, all the drivers, and enabling “Nvidia Resizable Bar” in this laptop. I have heard that it increases performance.
What someone needs to develop is a 'laptop' docking station which docks to those back sockets and converts USB3.2.1.56.2 etc to Thunderbolt out on the back. If small enough you could leave the 'dock' on.
Unfortunately in UK this laptop is with R7 5800H, not much difference but would be nice to have maxed processor
We always get shafted with the lower specs but higher price 🤨
the fan noise isnt that bad...waaay better than the hi pitched ones.
YOU CAN SET THE FAN POWER!!!!! It is in the rog armoury crate and you can make the fans louder our quieter
If I want a 17inch 3070 with qhd screen, is the g17 or the scar 17 a better choice?
hi, can I ask about the fonction about the functions of the two hotkeys button next to the disabling microphone button(the one with fan icon and the one with rogue icon) and what's the difference bettween the hotkey fan button and the f5 fan button, thanks in advance.
How can I buy it, if it's already sold out? Will they make another batch?
Looking to buy this. But I travel for school (3 month at the time) and with long periods inbetween at home. Always had a 17" but am divided if I should get the G15 instead for easier transportation. But am afraid to loose to much power and specs doing so. It´s confusing :P
Same issue here check out the TUFs too
Did you figure anything out yet, or are you still searching? :P
@@logan62097 No. Still divided :p
I just got it this weekend :) I love it :xxx ..and it feels small compare to my old 17.3" too ..Acer Aspire V3-772G. The only thing that doesn't have is a camera, but I guess is not so important.
Battery is fine, how much juice? Congrats, great vid.
90whr, should last like 8 to 10 hours depending on your settings and what you're doing
I can not find this 17" Strix in any configuration to buy now. I check Asus site and its not available to buy or place an order other than recieve an e mail ntification. I was hoping to order one from Cost co and use my mebership discount and get a doubled up warranty. If anyone knows a legit dependable source to buy the new 2012 Ryzen model I am very interested ! Thanks all. Thanks for the review... it was very helpful !
Hello, good video. I wanted to ask you a question. Can a USB C - Display Port adapter be connected to an external monitor? I have doubts about the issue of the electrical current that this USB C port delivers, I don't know if it would damage the Display Port of the external monitor. Thanks in advance, regards.
How is the 300hz panel?
I ordered mine with the 3080 but I gotta wait a few weeks
Have you reviewed the omen 15?
If yes, pls can you send me the link pls😊
The Omen has the worst battery life ever I don’t recommend you buy one ! You should only trust Asian Brans beware of Hp they make very fake descriptions about their very horrible gaming pcs
Do you have the option to remove the RGB cables from the edge? because I want to buy it, but I don't want it to turn on at all, not even when turning on the machine.
Well I just ordered it! Showed up on Amazon today with a delivery date of march 12-13. So it's a 1 month (at least) wait - but it was orderable and shipped and sold by Amazon, so I feel pretty good about it. But, like I said, if you sell your one first, let me know! I'm joking. Not really.
I can’t find it in Amazon xd
For how much did you buy ?
@@okeviny9982 It showed up only briefly and for the normal retail price of US$ 1799. I ended up canceling my order so I never received the machine. When I checked on Amazon after canceling, the listing showed up as "unavailable." So it's possible that it's not there now, but hopefully it will be added again if and when they get stock.
But are most people gonna even open up the back or would they get someone else to do it
Thanks for the informative review.
How loud is the fan noise while browsing or using word?
I played God of War sitting in less than a meter away from a PS4 Pro. Fan noise isn't a problem at all. :)
Where can I buy a motherboard for a laptop model asus G713QM-ES94 online New or Refurbished?
lol of course it will be loud due to maximising the usage of your cpu and gpu while gaming, but can you game on your mac book air m1? will it run the witcher 3?
