- Here's how to improve performance on your Asus Strix G17 by up to 15% in COD: Warzone! I was not expecting this to improve performance as much as this did! I hope everyone finds this video helpful and sees improved FPS like I did as well. Shout out to Scott Reams who emailed me about this and suggested I test 32 GB ram!

Update 6/11/2021: I believe Jarrod'sTech narrowed down the issue surrounding the ram in some of these laptops. It comes down to improved secondary timings on with the RAM. It does not have anything to do with the size of the RAM module, and I no longer believe it is single rank vs dual rank (though that can help in some cases, but I don't think that was the issue in this instance). There was a big difference in performance between the RAM modules I tested in this video, but I couldn't truly identify the issue, even after asking Asus directly about it, which didn't know about this issue. So kudos to Jarrod for figuring why some of the laptops are underperforming in certain games. One thing to really keep in mind about this issue is that it mainly in CPU bound titles. The stock ram plays these games smoothly, but it is certainly possible to get more performance out of the laptops with RAM with better timings. So I'm still glad I made this video, as it still helped bring light to the issue and help provide a solution for improved performance. Here's Jarrod's video talking about the Lenovo 5 Pro, which I believe has a problem similar to the RAM in this video: ruclips.net/video/zUbryj294Cs/видео.html
Really appreciated for all of you videos ! I am going to order asus strix g17, can u give me perefal link so that you get a bonus from my purchase?

@gizmosliptech, did you run also the timespy? I am curious of the CPU scores in timespy differences.
did you test these with laptops internal or external display? :)
@GizmoSlipTech How were you able to get such good FPS with the 16gb stick? I have the Zephyrus G15 with the 3070, but it stutters/lags while playing new games such as COD Cold War since it uses up all 16gb of ram. Would it be better to return it, and get the Scar 15 instead, or just upgrade the ram?
I love videos like this! Good stuff man!
I didn't think of these stuff until now. Thanks Brandon
Thank you once again, your videos are great and really helpful, Loving my G17
Did you upgraded the ram on your g17? I think to upgrade it together with a new ssd
I wanna thank you that you have made a best laptop comaprison in youtube channel!. very good and straight to the point!
I remember watching a TechQuickie over on their channel talking about single/multiple rank RAM modules, and it's cool to see this not only tested, but with recorded improvements. I was planning on doing a RAM upgrade, but went ahead and grabbed 32GB through that affiliates link!
Thanks for making much more than just laptop review content!
Yeah, Malaki! Glad it was helpful!
Really informative and well made, thanks for your hard work!
Thank you for your hardwork !!
Very interesting. I wouldn't have thought it would make a difference. Pretty cool.
Great Analysis sir, thanks a lot. I started following your channel recently and the effort and analysis you're putting in these Videos, are remarkable...
Thanks Suryasis!
Great review, it all depends on the set up that is right for you. To be honest very few games need 32 or 64 mb of RAM, it’s a nice to have rather than must have, unless your in a gaming competition.
Nice I just need the G17 Strix now :P
Do you know when they are launching or restocking ?
Well at my place they launching on 21st of March. Am ready with the amount in account. Will order asap😬

Prefect video. I think loads are keen to see this. Very surprised to see the results. As you say towards the end 16GB dual rank might be the main issue here... Anyway great video. Would it be possible to do a video on these new laptops with different GPU versions? I've order a scar 15 3080 but 8GB I'm worried it will be massively less than the bigger version.
Glad here in Indonesia, the G17 already shipped as the SCAR Version using the 32 GB Configuration in the price around $ 2750 ~ $ 2800 with all the bundled item of : ROG Eye, ROG Chakram / Gladius Mouse, 2 sets of Charger (The Brick and The Smaller One), and ROG Backpack. It's also included permanent licensed of Microsoft OHS 2019.
Thanks for your benchmark Brandon 👍👍👍
God bless you, thanks a lot.

Awesome video, very informative. Aside from the RAM, do you think replacing the factory NVME drive would make much of a difference in gaming? I'm thinking of using the stock 1TB HD as storage and getting a faster NVME, either a 500GB or 1TB for the O/S. If the performance would be only negligible, then maybe leaving the system as is and just getting an additional NVME drive for storage might be the best choice? What do you think?
Sorry, forgot to mention, I have the ROG STRIX G713QR-ES96 w/ Ryzen™ 9 5900HX, 16GB, 1TB, 17.3in. Thanks.
Hey man, just seeing this now, very informative. Can I ask you a question?

Hi Gizmo, i'm planning to get a legion 5 pro with 32gb ram variant to improve performance. Do you think the stock one is single rank or dual rank? But with that aside, it should be miles better than the 16gb variant right?
GREAT REVIEW Gizmo! So, with 16gb laptop with low settings, it can not run 120fps or more? 😳
I have a late model Acer Predator Helios 300. I just installed 32 GB of G-Skill DDR 4 3200. (Dual Rank and Dual Channel) The PC was already fast. No it is instantaneous. Can't wait to try MS Flight Sim. The PC has a wonderful screen, QHD and 165 Htz refresh rate, not to mention an NVidia 3070 with 8 GB of VRAM. Gotta love it.
Thanks for all the testing. Looks like 32 GB is max for my laptop.
Scar 15 with 3080 qhd was in stock at best buy from about 1 15am to 150 am Thursday April 15th. I got super lucky checked before going to bed and got my order in coming Monday!!!
Hey Gizmo, is the G.Skill 32GB what you used for this video? It appears that your stock 32GB kit from your SCAR 15 is actually single-rank despite having chips on both sides.
Thanks for sharing. By the way knowing that official website have mentioned the Strix can only have 32GB RAM max … 64GB RAM working?
I hope u get your hands on the Prometheus high performance laptop from Eluktronics it should go head to head with the msi ge76 however difference is it has the 5800H processor so it should be a good comparison
I agree
Thank you! Could you please also test this with 4800H?
Can you compare the Strix Scar 15 with the 5800H/3070 to the stock Strix Scar 15 with the 5900HX/3080 ? Also do you have a review of the m15 r4 with the intel 10870/3080?
Do the Aorus 15P , that one is a game changer!

Nice video, very informative. Out of interest, what do you use for msfs2020? I have an oculus link cable and quest 1 and cannot get any stability. Oculus games are fine but msfs2020 just breaks things.
I have ran MSFS2020 in VR, and if you want to run that game, you'll probably need to reduce settings and render resolution percentage until it plays smoothly. Will vary by laptop/desktop and how powerful the system is.
Sorry, I meant what vr setup do you use, oculus rift, quest, hp reverb etc. to compare to my setup? I am trying to run it on a strix g17 (yes I managed to get one :-))
Nice Vid.
Is it right that only the strix scar 17 comes with 3080 graphics ?
@Dean Sparkle so, where is the difference between the scar g model and the normal g model ?
@Dean Sparkle thanks. I will buy the scar 17 too and I'm hyped to get my hands on it 🤗👍
32 Gb looks like the sweetspot. Thanks for the info. Shame many of the Asus Ryzen models have a soldered portion of RAM
All of asus's thiner products have 1 stick soldered whereas the thinker ones are fully upgradable

I know I asked you before in other videos
But how do you think this will effect VR? It’s typically gpu bound, but it’s still a different animal
Have a g17 on pre order
I have seen VR games allocating more than 16 GB of RAM, but I haven't tested in VR games for Single Rank vs Dual Rank, or for Ram amount. I imagine this would help some VR titles that need high CPU performance, but I haven't tested.
This is also what I needed to know if later I should get 64 GB RAM or not
Unless u run simulations or complex renders 9/10 u don't need 64gigs. U probably won't need 32higs unless u use more complex software or video edit. Games are more reliant on vram then normal ram and unless u multitask 16gigs is plenty
@gizmosliptech I also have another question. Does the MSI dragon center software provide you with the information on the TGP of your GPU? I've seen youtube videos of ASUS ROG models running the ROG gaming app clearly specifying the TGP of their GPU, but I am not sure if MSI's software Dragon center shows that info. If not then the only way to find that out is either through reviews or downloading 3rd party apps like GPU-z

Do you mean dual channel when you say dual rank or is that something completely different?

Dual Channel = Running a set of two sticks of ram

For anyone on here wondering or thinking of trying this yourself, the CL18 sticks don't work at CL18 on this laptop. I would like to add some small correction to the explanation how to check if your ram is single or dual rank. It seems that a ram stick can have memory chips on both sides and still be single rank . For example, in Gigabyte G5 unboxing video that Gizmo has done ruclips.net/video/z3LI2PyqWCo/видео.html, the stick has memory chips on both sides, but on the label you can read 1Rx8 which indicates that it is single rank(1R-single rank, x8-to how many bits each memory chip connects). 8 chips on the stick x 8 bits = 64bit - this calculation also indicates that the stick is single rank, if you get >=128 then it's probably dual rank. You can also figure it out by running CPU-Z. More info about ranks: www.vikingtechnology.com/wp-content/uploads/AN033_Module_Rank_Whitepaper.pdf, www.minitool.com/news/single-rank-vs-dual-rank.html, ruclips.net/video/tySToFdLV2g/видео.html

Upgrading from Single Channel to Dual channel would improve things. But if you have 16 GB of RAM, I'd guess you are already in dual channel with 2x8GB sticks. I don't know if the i7-7700HQ is sensitive to single rank vs dual rank. That is an older CPU/GPU, so I wouldn't expect it to perform as well as these newer machine in any case.
@@GizmoSlipTech it is 16gb single channel im 100% sure, the problem is that it doesn't perform as well as the same model with same specs.

Gizmo is it possible to have a clue about flight simulator without Optimus? The score looks so low and the game is very cpu intensive so maybe without Optimus the scores will increase.
I did not see an increase in MSFS2020 on an external monitor. The game needs optimization and multicore support. I'll be testing the game on more systems soon, so stay tuned for benchmarks coming up with Intel/Nvidia combos, and we'll see if they perform better.

would be the same results...
If u mean the zephyrs g15 then u cant because the ram isn't upgradable and for any other laptop the results would be the same (within margin of error)
