#johnbonham #drummer #ledzeppelin
Yeah, Bonzo is a beast & JPJ is like the Swiss Army knife of musicians: he can do nearly anything.
Zeppelin and Bonham were the greatest!
I'm so glad you're back to Zep. Their first rehearsal together was in August 1968 and this album was released in the US in January 1969 and in March of the same year in the UK when Jimmy was 25, Jonesy was 23, and both Robert and Bonzo were 20. I can't talk technical skill; however, I love how the cymbal crashes provide a bright punctuation throughout. The church-like organ opening with acoustic guitar belie the bite of lyrics and the addition of pedal steel guitar adds a touch of unusual that hints at the folk/country elements that would occasionally pop up throughout their career. This is definitely a "deep cut" track. EDIT: Robert and Bonzo were both 20 because both of their birthdays came after the release of the album (August and May, respectively) so neither would have turned 21 yet.
Remember that JPJ was a church organist in his teens, presiding over one of the largest and finest parish church organs in Kent. He also nearly left Led Zeppelin to take up the assistant organist job at Winchester Cathedral at one point - he absented himself from a recording session at Headley Grange to audition for it, and would have got it had his bandmates not talked him out of leaving.
@@richardharrold9736 Yes, he was choirmaster when he was 14. I've heard the Winchester organist story but I don't believe he was serious. What he did do, however, was speak to Peter Grant to ask him to allow a little more at home time in the touring schedule to be with his family.
@@henriettaskolnick4445 I think he went to the audition at Winchester just as a bluff to give him leverage.
Before all of zeppelin stuff they played together under the new yardbirds for 6 gigs late 1966 into 1967 both Robert n John were 18 years of age when they played together with Jimmy n Jonesy for the first time
Your comment contains an element that I’ve been wondering about/bothered about: I’m old, and I only remember people shortening the band name to “Zepp” as you’ve done here. I realize, as he’s pointed out many times Mr Rooney came only recently to the congregation of Led Zeppelin, so I’m wondering if this is why he and many others on the channel refer to them as “Led Zepp”. Is this a newcomer thing? Or perhaps a geographical thing? Curious if anyone can tell me if this was a common nickname contemporary with the band or what?
Rock on led heads
So looking forward to your review of the final track on this Album - How Many More Times. Just keep reminding yourself that Bonham was only 20 years old when he laid this stuff down. Still a kid!
Brilliant teach, you bring us back everytime with this analysis and application. I learned 'humanity' in his drumming. It's why it resonates 50 years later I guess. Bravo
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Andrew, I absolutely love your videos. You're obviously very knowledgeable about music. I would love too see a comparison reaction video between John Bonham and his son Jason. He has his own band doing Zeppelin covers. He also played with Zeppelin in the 2007 Celebration Day concert at the O2 Arena. This would be pretty interesting. Not to slam anyone. Who knows, Jason might be better. I have no clue. Thank you.
One of my favorite Zep songs to hear Bonhams genius is on Zep III ...
Out on the Tiles.
Jimmy Page wrote the song from a phrase Bonham would say prior to going to town drinking. .
Out on the Tiles ...means ..A night out in the town ....
Very similar style playing to Good Times Bad Times.
I saw Zep live in 1977 ...The intro to his solo was Out on the Tiles .....and came back out with the band to Moby Dick..
What an experience that had to be.. cool story and post.
WOW had forgotten how beautiful this song is!! Bonzo so young yet powerful 🥁🥁🔥 THANKS ANDREW
Incredible!
Always love your Zeppelin/Bonzo reactions. I’ve been listening to the band for 50 years now and it just keeps getting better and better!
Yes it's totally timeless
@@AndrewRooneyDrums it is.imagine how it will be in like 300 years. Imagine it being public domainy like all the classical melodies are now. Wether it's commercials or lullabies or Saturday morning cartoons, the stuffs plastered with all sorts of hundreds year old pieces from all those great classics composers.
Love Led Zeppelin great band
You also should listen to" I can't quit
You baby" with led zeppelin, real blues or
"How many more times "also with led zeppelin. I grew up with these Guys and their music in the 70 ties
Of couse also Black sabbath, two of my favorite bands
Love the channel. This cut, when I'd play it loud, my cat would just lose it. Shadow boxing, rolling on the floor, clearly distressed. If you've gotta cat, try it. I got the record soon after it was released. Side one, magic, gadzooks! So I flipped the disc expecting the same thing. Side two, shiver, I suddenly knew this shit was for real. I'm 70-ish now, those are still my first thoughts when I listen to it. Thanx.
Poor cat! 🐈⬛😮🤣
I'm so happy you've covering the whole album . This was one of my very first album purchases as an eight year-old kid. They, more than any other band, made me pick up a guitar, then later, a bass. Great reaction.
Great insight. Always interesting. Keep rockin' Andrew! Thanks!!
Thanks for watching!
Good morning from New England...Bonzo was definitely the engine behind the band but JPJ was the glue that kept the music cohesive...Add to that he's a multi instrumentalist which rounded out their sound and kept the song structure solid..More-still; it also adds various vibes that greatly embellish the overall piece..Great way to start my Monday..Thx Andrew 👍🤘✌️
Yes
So glad you are doing this. This song is one of my favorite Bonham drum tracks. Idk if it's the mixing, but there's no compression, no studio reverb. I don't think there's a Led Zeppelin track that has a more "raw" drum sound than this track.
Bonham's drumming here is full Bonham. Simple, nothing extravagant. Just simple pocket.
Great reaction/analysis. Bonzo was so good. Very much enjoyed.
When I was little I always loved the pipe organ at church. Especially so when the bass pedals kicked in. It sounded so huge! So, I was right at home in loving this JPJ Hammond Organ intro way back when. The guy was so immensely talented so young that he never needed to ever join a rock band such as Zeppelin. We’re all thankful though that he did! Furthermore, many don’t “get” this very important album. How I like to paint the picture is: gather up a half dozen releases from this same time period and listen to them. They all sound dull with that same old late sixties “sound.” Between Jimmy’s and John Paul’s studio experience and etiquette, it was win win. This album’s crisp sounding production is what set it apart from everything else around it, at the time. Zeppelin were literally the next new thing.
robert and bonzo were both 20, the band had onl;y got together a few weeks before they did the album
Just looked this up. To finish-out, JPJ was 22, Jimmy 24.
@@glennreed9764 yup, they were REALLY young!
you got to check out John Bonham in the ocean live at Madison square gardens 1973
And that SLIGHT detour into Black Sabbath lol
I wonder, have you ever heard Jason Bonham (his son), and analyzed how much he inherited from his late dad, or if he does some things differently..?
ah man, a might sack off early. Love this one. oh, you big tease again. That's great. i love the trailer. I was not even aware that could be done. I'm going to look into that. Have a great day. I'll coffee and drums this one later
Just caught the tail end of this cast, need to watch the whole thing. One question on the "walk this way" groove. What do you think of the left foot work on the hat for that beat..? I found that to be one of the trickiest parts to learn on that groove...
Bonham was 20 when this was recorded.
Lovely song! Nandi Bushell just posted an amazing cover of Caravan. Tough drum solo but she slays! Hope you cover it.
I have loved all of your LZ reactions...How about Nobody's Fault but Mine ?
NENHUMA BANDA ATÉ HOJE VEIO TÃO FORTE QUANTO O LED NOS 4 PRIMEIROS DISCOS. NINGUÉM FEZ ISSO ATÉ HOJE.
Hey dude, idk how much of these comments you read or if you even consider video suggestions from comments, but I wanna suggest the Alex Shelnutt video from vans warped tour 2009 playing downfall of us all. Alex isnt really a drumming juggernaut like Bonham or Joey Jordison or other big names in the drum community. But, I think the video highlights practical drumming incredibly well and, specially since the song falls in and out of halftime feel variations, Alex does his job well on the dot. I think you'd enjoy it even if watched not for the reason of making a video. cheers man! Love the videos
Gotta love some Led Zeppelin. If a rock band was an orchestra lol
Well said man
I thought you forgot side 2 Andrew!
How do you follow dazed and confused on an album? How about an organ solo in the realm of Bach.
No two fills are ever the same
Thanks another great video . Question have you heard when Ginger Baker criticized Bonham he said Bonham couldn’t swing a sack of sh-t . Do you agree ? Cheers
when will be next led zeppelin week
Bonham was 19 at the time
How many more times is the song you should do
On the way. Doing the whole album in order :)
It seems the other 3 masters in the group are grasping at your attention.
Please Reaction Echa Soemantri From Indonesia. He best drummer in ....
Echa Soemantri in " Solo Jazz Freedom Festival "
Peart was the better most technical player, but he had the swing and power
Please oh please check out Bonham's drums on Boggie With Stu. NOTyour typical Zeppelin song.
This is excellent content! Really enjoyed your analysis and I am just a fan not a drummer.
