I think they're cool and while I'm a Strat/LP guy I'm very open to alternate designs. But I really wanted to HEAR these. I appreciate your review but we never hear it clean, never hear big open chords, all we hear are the same muted octave riffs. I'm not at all putting you down, but to sell or even review an expensive, alternate guitar it would help me to hear more varying sounds, no effects, big effects, more of a real expose. Thanks!
It's great to see some true innovation beyond what we have had in the market for so many decades. Great design, great sound, a very original take on the instrument.
The Birdfish is a neat idea. I like to tweak as much as I can when it comes to my instruments and being able to experiment with different pickup positions is really cool.
Didn't the Tesla used to have a sound effect button? I think was a faux-shorted-out sound.... Can you re-do the demo without any effects? I assume Teuffels sound quite different from Strats & LPs, but this reverb, etc makes all guitars sound the same.
I don't know why everyone is bashing these guitars, I think they look and sound pretty freakin awesome. If nothing else if you're playing a gig your band would be remembered just for you playing one of them on stage. "Hey remember that guy with the weird ass guitars?" "Yeah man they were pretty good" so. Just a thought.
I can say that I'm open to new ideas like the pick up adjustment and the fact that they can change out the tone bars... that was REALLY cool. But what's not cool at all is the looks and the price tag. Something that lets me get more sounds of a guitar is great.
Do the headless versions need special strings such as double ball ends? Is it easy or tricky to thread them through that nut hardware? I wonder if it's more like a Floyd nut.
+CR no you can see on the tesla when he shows the headstock the cut strings, the locking nut is essentially just a normal locking nut with 300 dollar screws.
@PremierGuitar - How was the fretwork? In the close-ups of the "head/nut-stock" on the second guitar the frets looked like someone spent a lot of time dressing those frets!
I like the concept and they sound really good. I'm not so sure about the ergonomics of the round pickup selectors though. Sometimes, when you have only one beat to change the sound in an song, it seems likely to miss your desired setting then...
They look beautiful , each in their own way. The Niwa is the one I would like to take home. I know the Tesla one wouldn't suit me personally as I use my thumb on the bottom E.. I do like the designs to look at, I particularly like the use of wood for controls and pick up covers. I have never like that black matte finish. I was sent a guitar with that finish and I didn't like the way it went shiny where you touch it the most. It was soon polished to a nice shiny black. I use Steinbergers a lot and the headless design is great. I found it annoying for people like me who break e and B strings yet have to buy whole sets of double ball ends.(which no shop sells) I use adapters that take double ball and standard strings. I do like the bridges on these guitars .They are really nicely made. The Birdfish I had seen before and may suit some people but it's not my thing. Great guitars
Interesting and beautiful work. How about some testing with gigging players who switch between the coils and use the tone and volume pots a lot. What was their impression? On stage I mean, not sitting down and looking for the right position. :-)
The most original design idea in guitar design for almost 100 years. With the SUSTAINER coming in second place. Midi was ground breaking . But these are available with Midi
Thank You Premier Guitar, I got a great sensation from watching this. This is true 21st ->22nd Century innovations. The sound, although accompanied by a type of delay, still had me in the top mezzanine of a concert hall; very effective. Guitar has been resurrected, once again, with innovative design and the guitarist in mind!! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 + 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
the one closest to the tailpiece adds 60 cycle hum, second is an on/off, the one closest to the neck makes the pickup microphonic i.e. high end squeal.
so besides looking radical and costing a fortune I don't really see any advantages to these designs, and they don't really sound any better than standard guitars
I'm glad to see the change in the comments. The first day was all "Screw being traditional! If it's different, even if cripplingly, unplayably so, let's be different!", and now it seems the tide has shifted to the- let's say- more thought out side of the fence.
Amen brother !! I will take my Kramer Barretta re-issue that I paid $170.00 US for and another $175.00 for a few mods over any of these . The look isn't pleasing to my eye but hey Im an old 80s Metal Head so maybe Im missing something . But my wallet still has some green in it LOL ...
@ChaosBurnsWithin People are used to normal guitars. Also, the price is FUCKING insane. The Birdfish: $14000 for the standard (Birdfish Classic) $4000 more for a version with MIDI The Niwa: $9200 The Tesla: $8000 for the 6 string and $8300 for the 7 string. $1500 more for a version with MIDI, and $1700 more for a 6 string with a trem.
I like the tone of the Tesla the best I think, it seems fatter, and I'm pretty sure it's obvious, but I really, REALLY need a Birdfish...with the mahogany bars!
Rotary pickup selectors aren't amenable to switching pickups mid-song. I've loved my PRS Custom 24 in all aspects BUT the rotary pickup selector. It's small enough you can do the "pinky curl" (like with a Strat's volume knob) to switch from bridge to neck if you hit it hard enough (requires an unreasonable amount of force). Teuffel's gigantor detented wooden pickup selector knob is too big to curl like a Strat volume knob, though. Looks great, but thoroughly impractical.
@kerranz Me myself i have to say i don't like some of the features on those models, but it's just personal taste. I think it's pretty cool to go and find new design ideas and stuff, but the problem i have with those guitars is the fact that some estetic choice actually influence playin' it in a negative way. And that if you're a designer, is a huge thing to keep in mind...
Wow such hubris and arrogance from the peanut sections. FYI Nick Kellie is an accomplished, and well trained published musician and teacher. He has received accolades in the UK and an award via the BBC. Nick was signed to Digital Nations - part of Steve Vai’s record label and has recorded an album entitled “For A Brother” with his band “Nick Kellie Band”.
Full marks for trying something different. Guess the Hendrix "thumb-over-the-neck technique" is out when playing the second guitar. I swear a someone like Westone made a guitar with adjustable pickups back in the wacky 80s guitar craze.
I think they're cool and while I'm a Strat/LP guy I'm very open to alternate designs. But I really wanted to HEAR these. I appreciate your review but we never hear it clean, never hear big open chords, all we hear are the same muted octave riffs. that last one is actually a Klingon weapon
Hey, I love your videos man!
Thanks man! Id have to use one of these guitars!
Better start saving up then!
LOL! indeed!
I'm a Strat/Paul/335 guitarist, but there something above and beyond the usual odd shaped instrument. These seem well thought out and creative.
They kinda look like the 50's vision of a future guitar.
I just love the designs.
It's great to see some true innovation beyond what we have had in the market for so many decades. Great design, great sound, a very original take on the instrument.
I've seen these guitars about 4 years ago, but never seen one in action. Thanks for the video.
The Birdfish is a neat idea. I like to tweak as much as I can when it comes to my instruments and being able to experiment with different pickup positions is really cool.
I think their shapes are awesome
those cases are awesome
The headstock on the first guitar looks pretty much like the wangcaster
Didn't the Tesla used to have a sound effect button? I think was a faux-shorted-out sound.... Can you re-do the demo without any effects? I assume Teuffels sound quite different from Strats & LPs, but this reverb, etc makes all guitars sound the same.
@kerranz i agree. the phrase " beauty is in the eye of the beholder" states it all i love these guitars especially the first one
@mrbiotech - The fretwork and playability was amazing on all three guitars. It seems nothing escapes Uli's notice when he's crafting these guitars.
Birdfish is awesome, great idea and nice look, i wish i could afford one
beautiful design.... like a piece of art
I don't know but it remind me Devo
These guitars are nuts!
Truly unique!
I was all fired up! I misread the name as "Tufnel" Guitars!
but they go to 11
"The truss rod only weighs 1.7 ounces, so it's not contributing to the weight of the guitar at all"....ehm....well, apart from 1.7 ounces, of course !
i definately want the last one!!
Sustainer at 8:33 for bridge pickup ?...
yeah, i definitely want one birdfish.
I can say that I'm open to new ideas like the pick up adjustment and the fact that they can change out the tone bars... that was REALLY cool. But what's not cool at all is the looks and the price tag. Something that lets me get more sounds of a guitar is great.

fuck! i want the last one! just because of the versatility
They look beautiful , each in their own way. The Niwa is the one I would like to take home. I know the Tesla one wouldn't suit me personally as I use my thumb on the bottom E.. On stage I mean, not sitting down and looking for the right position. :-)
This is cool although I can't see those knobs working very when playing live
I love the forward thinking design of the bird-fish. Would Shawn gig with any of these guitars given the opportunity???
Any chance we could hear them with more reverb?
Teufel is the German word for Devil. That is probably why these guitars are so cool.
he does, he used one when I saw metallica back in 2010 here in argentina
The most original design idea in guitar design for almost 100 years. With the SUSTAINER coming in second place. Midi was ground breaking . But these are available with Midi
"He calls these two aluminum pieces here the bird and the fish. They are hand sculpted out of salad, aluminum."
What scale are the guitars???
Thank You Premier Guitar, I got a great sensation from watching this. This is true 21st ->22nd Century innovations. The Birdfish is awesome!
What is your favourite design then?
this is cool
The nut seems compensated, is it true or my impression only? If it is, it would very important to explain that feature.
Hammett owns a couple of those. Amazing
@guerri89
This is a different model. I think the Tesla Classic has the buttons.
The Birdfish looks like a futuristic gun.
the one closest to the tailpiece adds 60 cycle hum, second is an on/off, the one closest to the neck makes the pickup microphonic i.e. high end squeal.
dont get why Mehtab Bhogal is obsessed with these guitars...
You know you're hungry when you read "truffle guitars" on the intro screen.
I read the comments before the video started and thought they were a little harsh... then it started and I got it.
I think I saw George JETSON palying one of these. Cool designs...
so besides looking radical and costing a fortune I don't really see any advantages to these designs, and they don't really sound any better than standard guitars
Idk if I would own one but there defiantly cool lol
I'm glad to see the change in the comments. The first day was all "Screw being traditional! If it's different, even if cripplingly, unplayably so, let's be different!", and now it seems the tide has shifted to the- let's say- more thought out side of the fence.
Those would be fun for about 4 seconds...
"originality just for the sake of it..." ??? - Yeah, that's called "Art".
I like that riff you play at 18:30. Is it yours? I am gonna steal that.
First thought was "What a stupid design?!". when he started play them, they sound awesome I take my hat down.
they removed the noise buttons on the tesla, good job
Love em, but the tesla makes me wonder if you can get to the higher frets. I guess it´s really uncomfortable, even Shawn won´t play those higher notes
third guitar is from MARS
I dont think id want to haul a guitar through an airport when it resembles a bomb.
i love that orange one. It looks awesome. I can't see spending 10-15K on these guitars though...no way..
WTF that bird fish is something out of this world.
I think the niwa looks kinda weird, but I like the look of the birdfish and the tesla.
I am open minded but the tesla is a crazy design - how can you ever play past the 7th fret, let alone bend?
The Big question for all the Models is Will It Shredd ???
Start making demos again. Like your playing over Jon's.
Seems like Fender, Gibson and the lot will be played out of the guitar marked pretty soon!
no, I mean... past the 7th fret, you cant have your thumb around the neck which acts as the pivot point for bends etc.
Belew plays a guitar that looks something like one of those I think
would have to pay me A LOT of money to play those.....
real 21century guitars/ nice!
at first glance, i thought ug. i'm now convinced these are amazing! wow!
@dlheidemann David Torn uses the Tesla model.
Good review, great guitars, too much reverb clouding the guitar's sound though.
Very polarized opinions. yes they eccentric guitars. but that pickup slider is just so cool!
Guitars for folk with more money than sense.
Absolutely right. German guitar have good finish (They know how to paint cars...) But only cheap gear on it. Check out the bridge eg.
stick to gibsons son
greg liako You're wrong, this guy is just exploiting his image. Try basslab.de, a real German design by an actual scientist and player.
I don't much care for the tesla, but I like the other two save for the switching diagram on the niwa
@ChaosBurnsWithin
People are used to normal guitars. Also, the price is FUCKING insane.
The Birdfish: $14000 for the standard (Birdfish Classic) $4000 more for a version with MIDI

The Tesla: $8000 for the 6 string and $8300 for the 7 string. $1500 more for a version with MIDI, and $1700 more for a 6 string with a trem.
The Niwa is rather cool!
Will it djent?
+WojciechFrankMusic oh my god
stop
please
i'm begging you
WojciechFrankMusic Defect noises and Dennis Kayzer
WojciechFrankMusic No, bit it'll Keiser, If you know what I mean.
@themodernguitarist just checked on their site, you're right :D
this is the kind of guitar that Tosin Abasi would use hahah
Top notch craftmanship i gotta admit. But I'll just stick with my SG
excuse me everyone, what year are we in?!
does it go to 11? - Nigel
I like the tone of the Tesla the best I think, it seems fatter, and I'm pretty sure it's obvious, but I really, REALLY need a Birdfish...with the mahogany bars!
I wish there was a Tesla bass. ^^
There are other headless bass options out there.
Well it's not just the...headlessness (?). I like the whole model.
Rotary pickup selectors aren't amenable to switching pickups mid-song. I've loved my PRS Custom 24 in all aspects BUT the rotary pickup selector. Kirk Hammett plays the Birdfish.
this guitar looks cool as hell IMO, but then again I've always been more interested in unique looking guitars.
@kerranz Me myself i have to say i don't like some of the features on those models, but it's just personal taste.
I think it's pretty cool to go and find new design ideas and stuff, but the problem i have with those guitars is the fact that some estetic choice actually influence playin' it in a negative way.

Dear Santa...
Birdfish looks like a cross between a guitar, a ray gun and a super soaker.

35,
145 is straight outta the jetsons
for the last guitar I would use mahogany and slap a slab of face palm to set the tone right.
Full marks for trying something different.
Guess the Hendrix "thumb-over-the-neck technique" is out when playing the second guitar.
I swear a someone like Westone made a guitar with adjustable pickups back in the wacky 80s guitar craze.
The Niwa headstock remind me something!!! Mmmm help me!
***** Fender tele?
+Umberto Ronco a penis?
Hehehehe
exept for the birdfish, they seem to be really bad to access te higher frets.
