I started eliminating my oversharing habit about two years ago and it took about 6 months for it to feel natural. A major benefit I found is holding happy thoughts as private little treasures for yourself to enjoy, unsullied by others. For example, if it's a beautiful morning and you share that observation with someone, they might be in a bad mood and snap, "What's so beautiful about it!" Whereas if you keep it to yourself, you can simply absorb and appreciate the beauty of the present moment, undisturbed. Now pleasant thoughts run through my head for a majority of the day and it's easy to be happy!
Yes, dignity is so important as is a calm and peaceful attitude. Far too often I have found that I open up and talk about my story but others don't hear, they put their own spin on it and believe their version! I get frustrated and upset and wonder if I should just make up a story but I won't. Silence is the way to go without appearing aloof.
@@Rachel16657 agree! And if you do speak, don’t be afraid to tell your truth and be genuine. People don’t realize how much harm they cause themselves when they lie about themselves. Life is short. Be YOU!!!
I regret talking about my divorce problems with too many people. this created this bad energy all around and people keep bringing this subject up in all conversations. I should’ve just stayed quiet. Lesson learned here. Thank you for the great video.
it's ok. You needed to talk. I get it. I did not find what I needed through expressing my feelings. People just can't give us what we need. We can't even figure it out. I came to the conclusion, unless I need a doctor or an ambulance. I may as well just live my life. I will respond to others in need. I actually feel good to help others. The reflection of others has not been helpful. it's ok.
Self esteem & self respect work helped me a lot to reduce or eliminate the pain & shame of past mistakes & FORGIVE myself for being so needy & foolish. Good luck...
I got molested 20 yrs ago & it affects everything in my life, I'm a man of few words, & I always most of the time have a serious look on my face. Scares some ppl. It's just what happened to me all those years ago messed up my progress so I'm "Wounded " until the right woman comes along, i believe she will help me heal. I need a strong woman
I am THE quietest person I know and I am constantly feeling pressured by others to talk. Thank you for showing explicitly and eloquently that there's nothing wrong with silence. I feel more at ease.
I think this is a really important point to make, the sense of pressure that comes with not talking and responding. Silence is a continually expanding battery… plug in and revitalise. It’s interesting how it kind of enters you the more you practice silence.
“Better to remain silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt” is a quote I try to live by. So many times my mouth has gotten me into trouble. To remain a quiet person in today’s society makes one appear to be an enigma. I’m ok with that.
I've always been a naturally silent person people love to be around to share with me THEIR feelings, thoughts, emotions. I always end up drained and when I share MY thoughts, feelings and emotions, I discovered people don't understand them as they are too deep for them so I communicate online, through art and I remain silent. Many think I'm not important. It brings me peace, people reveal their true natures and I avoid listening to them for too long to not be drained by their negative energy. All I have to do is literally stop talking about myself - it's never worth it and people always betray us. Oversharing gives a little piece of us but people never see us for who we are but in theirs eyes. So we might remain silent as well.
I hear you. I am a good listener, but find that people rarely are able to listen to me without getting distracted or bringing the focus back to themselves, You are important
In addiction recovery we learn our secrets keep us sick and that sharing is what helps ourself and other people heal. It helps release shame and blocked emotions by activating the throat chakra. I’m also in talk therapy to help bring healing to the traumatic grief and loss of my daughter Kaylah and a lifetime of abuse where I used to remain silent. I think there should be balance in talking and silence like in every area of life.
Your wrong sharing is for tards admitting that your powerless jus admits your weakness. How can a inanimate object rule something that's living? Some ppl jus love to hear themselves talk
You’re looking for a reason to disagree and hold on to your identity. She obviously is not teferring to silence in a therapy session. And if you actually are trying to convince yourself it is the same then it highlights the reason there is such a high percentage of relapse in addiction recovery. It’s because they try to use one area of codependency to help end dependency on something else. It never works long time because you have to detox from all areas of dependency in your life. We incorrectly think “codependency” is different than dependency on substances. It’s all codependency and if you leave ooen the bondage of dependency in just one area of your life you are guaranteed to eventually gain all codependency areas back. Even the seemingly harmless allowing the continued use of nicotine when trying to detox from a substance is comically misguided advice. You’re just transferring a dependency and solidifying your codependency nature.
I have noticed that my ains succeed when I haven’t talked about them to anyone. If I speak, my plans get ruined. It is so simple. Recently I met a man who asked: ”What are your three wishes?” I answered: ”I keep them secret.” In anyway, he could not do anything to fullfil any of them. He got angry. Well, shortly: it was the end of our two days lasted aquaintance. I could not be happier! I thoughr: Finally, I have learned something! Actually, I got more energy than before to start to take real actions toward my goals and dreams! 😅
Former hospice chaplain here. My talking to silence ratio with patients and families was about 10 % or less talking, the remainder listening or being intentionally fully present. If I'm around too much talking, I often have to excuse myself as it feels intrusive and almost violent at times and depending on the situation.
I’m a tech writer by career and as a professional “listener” (interviewing skills) I understand your ratio and the results of being bombarded by talkers. Also, thank you for your service in the Hospice field. As a person that’s lost many close family members, I really appreciate good people like you. 😊
Well said preacher. I’ve learned to hold my tongue within in the past few years. I imagine you have brought a measure of peace to patients by listening and being there.
"being intentionally fully present".... YES... thank you for that... I'm a massage therapist... I bring the same. People want to be heard and cared for. The massage is almost incidental.
I am a blabbermouth. I feel that ive needed validation because of childhood abandonment issues. Since i've learned to be more mindful and listen i find it so much easier to read peoples true intentions-nothing she didn't already say, I would just like to confirm that it happens, and my life is getting easier. every now and then I feel like its heaven on earth. I'm almost 50-better late than never.
I have no issues with silence. I love it. The greater part of my life has been spent in almost solitary confinement. Unfortunately my face was never built to appear beautiful or serene and I often find myself aggressively accused of being sullen when I find myself in company. Endless chatter about nothing drains everything.❤
Me too! I dont'know if there is just something wrong with my face or if people are just projecting their own negativity on to me because I am so quiet. Much love and peace to you.
I have learned that no response is a response. Like my time, I have learned to share my energy with a selective few. It makes life peaceful and I have found peace with myself.
I am very thankful for your video about silence. I have been practicing it for quite a while , going on solitary walks and avoiding crowds and friends who talk constantly. Now I slowly am aware of a constant presence in the heart and I try to live from that center but it isn't easy in this world and that's why I am so thankful for any help and reminders like yours. We need it!
When I talk to someone I often come away feeling I said too much, but I don't have many friends and don't socialize much so it's not a major issue. Silence is golden.!
Maybe it's because you don't really want to talk but in this society we feel pressure to talk. I do feel some people are naturally friendly & chatty but a lot of people are talking because they've been programmed, brainwashed to not be silent as that's where you find your True self, call it God but it's peaceful and still when your in touch with your own natural stillness, silence. 🙏💙🙏
One of the most truly useful pieces of advice, I’ve ever been given, came from a complete stranger, well, we had met literally less than an hour ago, and he said my friend you need to shut the F up! 🤩never forgotten it!
I’ve been told all my life I’m so “quiet”. People don’t like those who are silent. I’m an introvert as well and like to talk to myself to sort through my thoughts and emotions. I validate MYSELF and not through other people. I think being silent is good but there’s nothing wrong with speaking your truth. Us quiet people are constantly talked over or ignored or people use us to unload their garbage and walk away. Energetic boundaries help as well with this. I think as long as you hear and see yourself you’ll never be dependent on others hearing you.
Sometimes loud and aggressive people have more to teach us than silent ones My husband was a very quiet person and rarely spoke, people thought he was gentle, reserved etc but actually he was a very troubled soul whereas as my brother tended to be loud and overly talkative but was happy enough in himself, I think it’s why you’re silent that’s more important than being silent
AYE - I heard a song on my mom's (R.I.P.) 100th Birthday, recently called "Be your own best friend" - Like she was talking to my soul & telling me it's ok to want to disengage with the others. 💖💫✌2U!!
When I first entered group therapy, I was frightened, ashamed & SILENT so I had NOTHING to share at first. I soon realized that I did not yet have the words or a vocabulary to intelligently talk about my feelings or thoughts but soon learned how by listening to how seasoned others talked about their feelings & thoughts. I often used a thesaurus to find more & better words to describe my ongoing Reality. Over the years, I've noticed that many ppl cannot adequately talk about or describe their feelings & Reality. I've had to learn how to back off & talk about myself & my Reality less & less BUT, during group therapy, I really did need to talk A LOT about painful, frightening & unhappy events from the past.
Silence heals. It's the best medicine to purify your soul and clear your mind. Thoughts and emotions are just illusions created by the mind. You aren't your thoughts and emotions. You aren't your body. You are pure consciousness and awareness
Agreed! There's value in being silent, not talking. But, let's face it, we talk because we have a powerful brain that needs "exercise." Yes, strive for balance: know when to talk and when not to.
One of my biggest issues is "I talk too much" Working on it and getting better. A simple way I've improved is slowing down and thinking before I speak. An old saying is " The fish gets caught because he opened his mouth" Good info!
To talk and not talk depends on the situation. Sometimes it is a blessing a beautiful blessing uplifting and comforting to listen to beautiful talk from another person . A talk Can also sometimes be a curse , disturbing And with silence the same, Sometimes we are outgoing, and sometimes resting. Like tidewater, like breathing. A person never talking Can also be very heavy like a person who never stops talking. If you never talks, talk some more, if you always talk talk much Les. Listen……intuition You can talk babbeling, and you can talk intelligent and wise All artists wants to communicate their world and share.
I have suffered from anxiety for most of my life. Staying silent whether on my own or with others has given me so much energy and calmness. Sometimes, in meetings, I retreat into my silence and just listen to the repetitive rubbish that other people sometimes talk while my energy and calmness grows. I feel so much happier and stronger in myself, having found this . Thank you.
My internal world and home of silence are so incredibly important to me. Not needing to hold, share, and take in an opinion of, with, and from the world is the greatest gift I can give to myself and the world around me.
"I am not the body. I am not even the mind." "All your likes, dislikes, thoughts, feelings, opinions and emotions are not you. When you stop identifying with them then you have less of a need to share them." This is the most powerful statement I've heard in a very long time. So much so, I've written it down to repeat to myself on a daily basis. I will master silence and this video, even though it is quite short, is a very good way to start. Thank you for the clear and concise message. I appreciate you for sharing. 🙏🏻
We identify with the body/mind in every dream. Realizing that mistake requires awakening. So awaken to the dream called 'life' by seeing that outward silence is not enough. If you keep noticing the voice in your head it will eventually become silent as well.
Elizabeth, thank you for this brilliant explanation of what I have been learning for many years. Since my wife passed away 4 years ago, I have found that silence is my preferred state and keeps me aware of how much her energy and love is very much an ongoing part of my life.
I truly need to take heed of this message, thank you Elizabeth. I'm extremely lonely, have no family left and few friends and send emails in abundance and when talking in real life i cram 10 years in 5 minutes and not only come across as manic but I ALWAYS feel as if I've given away my heart and soul and am always regretful at sharing. I have severe PTSD and when i dictate emails not only does my anxiety increase greatly but my little dog pick up on my emotions and his stress goes up. When i slide type as here my stress is minimum and peace reigns the house. I have major health issues that require no stress of which makes your message paramount to heed and follow with practice. Thank you. Have a blessed day.
Beautifully said and thank you. I am more aware when I'm around, let's say, my co-workers, that I don't feel the need to talk all of the time. I use to try to think of things to say a lot, because the mind and mouth were more impulsive, and feeling uncomfortable with silence. It feels good to be silent around people and be calm...Yes, meditating can hugely help me and others to quiet down and be more mindful, more comfortable in every way. I don't want to be falling into every conversation with sensationalism, drama, or just any small talk. You do have more energy when you don't get yourself always involved in every conversation, and just try to stay thoughtful and silent.
I'm a naturally talkative fellow, but growing up in an abusive home taught me silence early. Silence has benefited me at times, and I'm said to give off an air of serenity. It's also cost me. There's a difference between being silent, and keeping your head down and your mouth shut.
Generally I have not been too talkative and love silence. I did my own at home silent retreat a few weeks ago and enjoyed it so much. When I am around people that talk a lot and share a lot I feel drained
Honor the elders. I spent five weeks on native reservation in Northern Canada. People would invite me in, and i would practice what i was taught, never speak first. . We would sit in silence. And when they spoke, it was softly. That is in sharp contrast to non indigenous people. I learned to wait for the spirit of the group to come naturally. Not to force conversation. We are all born indigenous or human Beings. But we become human Doings and become lost in space, the space of our thoughts. I remember wondering why " you should not talk first to Elders " After spending much time observing their teachings. I believe now it is because they are in a meditative state. Praying for you, for the ancestors giving gratitude that you have come into their presence. Grateful for the medicine you bring. Praying for your ancestors. Patiently waiting for the spirit to guide them and the conversation. Only with silence can you meet the creatures of the forest of your mind. Learn to honor the elders and they will share with you great wisdoms.....thank you for sharing this video and your wisdom .
I have learned to stop talking. I was rejected and put down when I tried sharing my feelings and beliefs. Now I ignore conversations as much as possible other than work. I am just beginning to see how it's more beneficial for me in my life!
I used to be the most silent person around, so much so that many times no one even remembered I am there. Some thought I ahve a big attitude, some thought I am shy or indifferent. Loneliness makes you talk a lot unnecessarily because you just want to feel alive and loved and heard. I loved the video. It has given me an insight about what I need to change and dig deeper in my actual issues. Thank you. God bless you always!
When you listen to music there are notes and spaces(silence). To have continual silence is to have no music, but to have no silence you have a cacophony of noise. What joins the note and the silence perfectly is rhythm. Finding your own rhythm or beat will make your life harmonious, so allowing the silence and allowing action rather than artificially filling the spaces, or acting compulsively will lead to inner peace.
Yes…..but counting those complex and mathematically irregular silences are amongst the hardest for professional classical musicians. Rather like flocks of starlings or shoals of fish, we rely upon the reactions of fellow musicians to calibrate how our silence works within the music, we need the noise of others to find our place in the score.
@@catherinehamer5653 it’s not complex if you find your own beat, without comparing it to others, or holding it for others to judge. Listen to your own heartbeat notice the spaces, listen to your own breathing. Just listen, and hear the rhythm, slow your breathing down and you will become still, allow the stillness to travel through your mind and body. After a while you will be able to be still even in the most hectic situations and you will recognise YOUR power and control.
Thankyou Elizabeth ! I am CONSTANTLY swamped with other's toxically loud and invasive opinions emotions and unnecessary drama all day at work. I am crushed by it, and they don't give a damn. You say quietness is a spiritual practice. Thankyou for this validation, for once. It is sweet to my soul. 🙏🙏🙏🙏 You are a special soul.
And so is compassion for others’ sharing-even the toxic stuff. Finding the balance is my challenge. Letting the triggering of the illusory ego pass through. I have felt at times that I would burn up, my judgements have felt so intense. I have wanted to avoid those experiences but maybe I need to run toward them.
Thank you. I stumbled onto this in 1990 as the result of a Gift Of Desperation and forgiving a woman that I had unkind thoughts about. At first I didn't know what it was other than God, I eventually found out that it was a non-dual mystical experience that I never expected to have or happen. I won't go into a lot of stories but it forced me to reevaluate everything "I" thought "I knew" because "I" knew nothing. I ran across a couple of A Course in Miracles teachers, and what they said fits the paradigm of what I experienced. I'm generally a quiet person even on Facebook, and lately, I've been noticing a few about myself that you brought up in your video about opinions and just being silent about them I feel that it would be pointless to respond to anything other than my Course teachers and friends. When I'm out and about, I spread kindness into a world that desperately needs it. Gratitude 🙏🙏🙏
This is very interesting to me. My whole life I was this way, not speaking, listening, etc. and was shamed as shy or awkward, or aloof. I changed and began speaking up, now I feel much more emotional turmoil since every word one speaks may result in negative karma. It's fascinating to now understand that I was doing it right all along, but unfortunately listened to unwise people in order to "fit in". My life has not been wasted, but sometimes if feels like it since I spent so many years trying to please other people at my own expense.
It's not a waste ... you are very perceptive. It's a learning experience. You can use this knowledge to make the adjustments you need, to bring positive energy into your life. Blessings to you!
THANKS FOR SHARING THIS WISDOM - YES, SOME THINGS ARE MEANT 2B SHARED BECAUSE THEY PROMOTE WELLNESS, OTHERS BEST 2B KEPT UNDER WRAPS!! When I taught school, I seemed to be the ONLY teacher, who practiced "Listening to the Sound of Silence" & from KG to 12th grades (when I subbed too) the lot of kids seemed to cooperate & take a keen interest in doing so. I would watch them in the beginning, to commend some on their listening skills, and correct others on their cheating (😘!?) and then join them for another minute. We'd start with a minute of hands on desk, sitting up straight, closing eyes, and listening to the sounds (usually the cooling or heating that was on, sometimes the teacher & students in the next class/es) Kids would be amazed at their ability to hear what they never noticed before, and they'd often WANT to do it "Again, Yesss"!?) I practice listening to my body - That comes with practice & mindfulness, and listening to the sound of silence is a wonderful prep. "If you listen to your body when it whispers, you won't have to hear it scream" It's healthy & OH SO BENEFICIAL!! Namaste from USA🙏!!
" Naturally meditative " That's the key word i learned today. Keeping 10 minutes of silence 3 to 4 times a day will make me natural meditative, it will help me go in meditation naturally. I will not be bored when I sit for meditation. Thank you madam.
I'm the person who talks too much. Not extremely and nonstop, but too much. I want to change it since years, but I failed. Elizabeth, your explanation is the first one, which really gives me hope. There is much sense and meaning in it, this might help me. Just one thing: generally I'm an observer and recognizer. This is one of my strong abilities. I do not feel, that my talkativeness has some negative impact to my observation. But, maybe I'm wrong. Could be, my mental skill gets stronger, when I reduce my talking. Your lecture makes sense to me. I found out, that I enjoy teaching people, because I want to make their lives better and easier. That's why I became educational designer. So I observe and feel, that part of my talkativeness is not about myself and for getting attention, but for making people understand and learn things. But yes, if I receive confirmation for that, it gives me energy.
The power of silence made me tapped into my feminine energy. It made me reflect on my thoughts, listen to my emotions and respond in a gentle manner It made me realize that silence is the best antidote for stress and emotions
There is a ART in talking... You must be a strategist. If we are all silent, it would be a dangerous place to live. Talking, sharing perspectives allows people to know what you accept and what you dont. Your moral values, etc... It also forces you to STAND ON WHAT YOU SAY! Its been my method to decode many situations and people. Some people, are not wired this way so they share their ways as if its the best way when its just THE BEST WAY FOR THEM. We are all wired certain ways and its up to us to find how were wired. Then, BE THAT!
I have been in silence for a long time due to past lives experiences where by sharing your truth would get you killed. Is important to both share and listen. That monkey mind is due to stress, toxic liver, adrenal problems, intestinal dysbiosis etc. If you wish to meditate and stop the chattering, you need to cleanse your body, balance the nutrients in your body and practice. Nature is one of the best places to meditate. When I first started meditating, it was a bit difficul because thoughts would appear. Eventually, I managed to quiet the mind with practice and frequency healing. Listening to fibonacci sequence and 963hz puts me into trance. Is important to share our knowlegde and experience as it adds more information to the table. Is not about competing who is right and wrong, is about expanding our consciousness and awareness by sharing our piece of the puzzle.
One of my favorite lyrics from a great band is "I don't advise and I don't criticize, I just know what I like with my own eyes." I use this as a mantra every day and I practice silence in my friend groups until I have something particularly important to add or to make quips. Practice makes perfect and honestly most people will fill in all the silence for you. You don't need to feel uneasy. 🙏
I tend to be a quiet, albeit nervous person in group settings. When I can, I often bring a small needlework or some crochet to help me calm down. It seems to create a sense of peace. Chatty people will come by and it’s easy to just listen. Quiet people might offer a quiet hello and then we will share an amicable silence. Thank you for sharing your perspective 😊
By nature I am a quiet individual who doesn't talk about her experiences, feelings or opinions. Instead, I'm a natural listener. However, this, too, can be a trap, as I've spent a lifetime listening seriously to those who talk only about themselves. This leaves me feeling stale. Also, to feel part of society, I can deliberately join in with this and again, be left feeling unsatisfied. My answer to this is to enjoy being alone and - when mixing with people - choose those with similar interests to mine. To do creative work alongside those with a similar outlook is most fulfilling.
I’ve worked on slowing down when I do speak and respond. Because of practicing this, I’m more calmer and less socially awkward when engaging in conversations. Great info!
This video really speaks to me ! My mother in law is one of those who can not be quiet, my nature is to be quiet. No wonder I feel nuts when she come to visit for up to three weeks. I find comfort in being quiet especially when I need to solve a problem .
Silence is essential to have control over situations, sometimes. It helps us understand and take in what it is, and not getting carried away by emotions. Silence doesn’t only mean by words, but in mind as well. To silent the mind, one needs to observe their mind from a third person’s perspective. It helps clear out unnecessary thoughts. Silence is deeply rooted in our ancient spiritual practices, and a powerful tool to live a peaceful life ❤
As a naturally quiet person (compared to most), I loved this video. While I would never give up the times in my life when I have found my voice or shared it and made an impact with my words and music, silence has always been a reliable friend. If I'm not clear on how I feel about something, I often just keep quiet and wait and see...most things sort themselves out or become clear on their own. Words are often a distraction from the feelings we need to let ourselves feel (which may be emotions or tapping into the energy of others, as you so eloquently noted here). Thank you for speaking to the value and power of silence, and how it can be an intelligent choice. ❤
I thrive on alone time. I don't like to talk much. This makes me a happy person. My sister who talks really fast and incessantly is visiting and it sucks the life right out of me. I'm sure, to her, I'm not normal, but I need to protect myself so make sure to take her in in small doses.
Hello and Thank You Elizabeth... Yes Indeed, Words can Deceive but Energy Never Lies... No one is You and that is Your Superpower... There is nothing comparable to One, who is Awakened... Silence is an Empty Space and Space is the Home of the Awakened Mind. Wishing You, all Blessings of The Divine Universe...
The less I need to talk, the fewer acquaintances I make. Small talk is social trade and I can't (but I've also had a near death experience and some big shifts that changes that stuff). I don't need to share my private stuff with most people. I may choose too but I don't need to, and people don't like that lol
“Words deceive but energy never lies.” True but as a sufferer of social anxiety, I can tell you that sometimes my energy is way off because of an innocent irrational but harmless (to others) internal struggle. My point is we should listen to energy but consider context and be sensitive to all we don’t know about others.
It's hard when you've built this image as an outgoing talkative person and you really want to change that. Then everyone thinks there's something wrong and they have a hard time believing you when you say there isn't.
It really speaks to me.. and obviously, I have to mention it. 😂 I have to admit the great shift in my life happen when I'm quiet... and tend to go away when I start talking about it... sooo🤐
You received the call for a better Earth. Thank you for every moment you stay in balance and dream of better days. Your hope, faith, and love ripples out for so many more to see their unique truth. Unconditional love for all is the key! 🦋🌏♾️💛💫
I will try this spiritual SILENCE starting tomorrow morning, I have noticed myself talking more lately and also not being able to relax as I used to. I'm hoping practicing SILENCE will help me in several aspects of my life!🙏☯️⛩☮☸
Read up on film star Erol Flynn. People said they felt like they’d had a martini after being with him just a little while; he was so relaxed that everyone around him could relax. So maybe pretend you just had a martini ..?
Silence is a powerful tool; if your aim is to ‘investigate’ another. That said, one who is silent and never shares something about themselves will never receive empathy from another and as a result will find trust from others and indeed friends, hard to come by.
True. We are a social species after all. We connect with others by sharing our personal experiences through stories and we build trust in relationships by being honest and vulnerable with eachother. Communication skills are very important for close relationships and silent people can be judgemental too, they just don't express their resentments openly, so they are prone to bottling up negative thoughts and blowing up with anger at times, which can also be very toxic to others and to themselves, causing psychosomatic issues in the long run. People who are too silent in social situations can appear aloof and cold, emotionally disconnected, avoidant, dishonest, passive agressive, lacking empathy, selfish or creepy and so on... Everything has a shadow. We can only progress spiritually once we are aware of that and ready to make concious choices by appling this awareness to our everyday actions.
Very true, powerful, and profound. It is in the silence that one encounters the "I am awareness" and can "be still and know Creator Source God" as each one understands -- and begin to ignore the sway of the mind and those stories of the mind and really find peace and harmony and joy.... to find connection to all things. It's a life time journey -- tai chi, prayer, meditation, have all led me to this place...... thank you for this word!
This was so informative. Thank you! Now I understand why I require a great deal of quiet time. There is a direct link to my energy level in getting quiet time with myself than constant stimulation that drains me.such as constant talking. Or always on go. I definitely need space!
I'm an introvert, but even so, I can be chatty either with others or with myself at times. However, I've found whenever I'm deliberately quiet, that I'm more mindfully present and can observe the actions and behaviors of others. I am also more aware of my inner thoughts and feelings and how they drive my anxious feelings and emotions. I'm more present with others and more present with my surroundings. It increases my sense of calmness and inner peace, as well as lowers my BP. Yet I need to practice silence on a daily basis, and I still am challenged by this. Thank you for your insightful video.
This is really good. It got me thinking about my own habits and what might be motivating them. Also, you have a calmness, a confidence, and an exquisite articulation that makes your message even more powerful. Thank you. I will watch more of your videos.
Interesting and challenging. I live alone but long for connection. I don’t spend much time with other people and definitely feel a deep urge to talk and feel heard when I am with them. I have been involved in meditative practices for years but have not felt that it assuaged this desire. In fact, haven’t we been taught that sharing our experiences is what creates intimacy and connection? The idea that I should expect even less from interaction is actually frightening. But I see there is something to the idea that since I am not the body, the mind of thoughts, or feelings, communicating about them is a kind of reinforcing of identification with them. I don’t know if anyone in my meditative community who has as few close friends/relationships as I do so I have no models for this kind of detachment AND thriving. Lack of connection is often associated with poor health outcomes. But I guess I am not my health, either. I know the spiritual path can involve what feels like a death and this certainly feels frightening to me, that I might need to push off from this mooring.
I understand and am in the same boat. Buddha, dharma and sangha are the three pillars to support practise. Each religion has something similar e.g. church congregation. I haven't found any like minded people at any religious place. It's lonely and I don't have a solution. So just letting you know you're not alone in feeling alone.
I think this video is addressing a world of over communication, over sharing, lack of depth in communication etc. A situation where you do not have many people you can naturally talk to is out of the realm of this video, and you should not take its message for you. It sounds like you really need more heart to heart talks, which is normal and necessary.
@@noremac4807 Thanks, I will try to take advantage of what I can, but also be willing to examine the sense of lack, which, in some disciplines is considered to be simply another passing appearance.
I agree they connection is vital for many of us, intimacy too which comes mostly from vulnerability. How does one be vulnerable without speaking, shearing their thoughts experiences please?
In silence we get to hear and input information. It's incredible what we can hear, our own thoughts, feelings, emotions and the energy of others. That way we can become aware and stop being puppets of impulses and reactions, but rather speak with aligned intention. Here's another tip: when speaking with others, ask them questions and be curious about their experience.
Talk when needed. Ask when in doubt. Other times, do your own things without letting others know. The secret of happy life.
The more you talk, the more of yourself you give to other people who don’t deserve it. Protect your self-preservation and dignity above all else.
That’s what I’ve come to realize as well.
they could also be boosting their own ego.
I don't think you'll understand how much this statement shook me. Truly one of the wisest statement I've ever heard.
I made the same mistake and beat myself up a lot on going in the past.
Now that you know this, you can tell them you do not wish to speak about this topic anymore. Time to set boundaries.

I think this is a really important point to make, the sense of pressure that comes with not talking and responding. Silence is a continually expanding battery… plug in and revitalise. It’s interesting how it kind of enters you the more you practice silence.
Non talkers? Can't wait to scribble their little comments . Of course , they don't want to share and advertise
I so miss my BFF because we rocked companionable silence. I want to go for a walk with someone and NOT TALK!! You sound perfect to me.

“Better to remain silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt” is a quote I try to live by. So many times my mouth has gotten me into trouble. To remain a quiet person in today’s society makes one appear to be an enigma. I’m ok with that.
Enigmatic fool!
thanks for not being silent and sharing this video 😂❤

Forget where I heard this : " Tis better to be silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. "
It’s a circle….I came from silence. Became a voice. Returning to silence
It’s amazing how insecure people can become when you decide not to talk too much. Sending love and peace to all people that prefer not to talk much 🙏
I've always been a naturally silent person people love to be around to share with me THEIR feelings, thoughts, emotions.
That sound like me. I live in silence, I love silence . It gives me clarity and understanding . 🙏
You just helped me understand why I struggle to feel important.
I am in total agreement with you! Again, balance.

Why did you watch a video about being silent? Just to disparage it? That is junk energy.
Thank you for guidance with silence.

I have no issues with silence. I love it. The greater part of my life has been spent in almost solitary confinement. This kind of talking is so valuable. Thanks for sharing.
Yes!
Only if it is perfect and complete *I-n-n-e-r* silence; any fool can keep his mouth shut.
One of the most truly useful pieces of advice, I’ve ever been given, came from a complete stranger, well, we had met literally less than an hour ago, and he said my friend you need to shut the F up! 🤩never forgotten it!
I got rid of social media years ago. Well worth it. Scary part is observing others just mindlessly hooked on it. Almost nothing good comes from it
I’ve been told all my life I’m so “quiet”.
This explains why I have so much energy. Thank you.
One of my favorite lines in Max Ehrmann’s Desiderata is this: “Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are a vexation to the spirit.”
Sometimes loud and aggressive people have more to teach us than silent ones
My husband was a very quiet person and rarely spoke, people thought he was gentle, reserved etc but actually he was a very troubled soul whereas as my brother tended to be loud and overly talkative but was happy enough in himself, I think it’s why you’re silent that’s more important than being silent
You are so right! I am just like you and sick of people trying to manipulate me. I seem to attract narcissists into my life, and I am so over it.

Hahaha, wonderful to hear your awareness is growing and you are drawn to silence. I wish you joy on your journey 🌻🙏🏻☺️
Brilliant saying 🙌. I’ll remember that one because my mouth gets carried away too . Unintentionally 🤣
You have one mouth and two ears for a reason.
The fish dies by its own mouth.
Listen……intuition
You can talk babbeling, and you can talk intelligent and wise
All artists wants to communicate their world and share.
Thank you.
I am a very quiet and peaceful person, I watch and listen a lot. But I don’t stop talking when I'm with a similar person 🙂

My internal world and home of silence are so incredibly important to me. Not needing to hold, share, and take in an opinion of, with, and from the world is the greatest gift I can give to myself and the world around me.
"I am not the body. I am not even the mind."
"All your likes, dislikes, thoughts, feelings, opinions and emotions are not you. When you stop identifying with them then you have less of a need to share them."
This is the most powerful statement I've heard in a very long time.
These are the teachings of Ramana Maharshi.
Elizabeth, thank you for this brilliant explanation of what I have been learning for many years. Since my wife passed away 4 years ago, I have found that silence is my preferred state and keeps me aware of how much her energy and love is very much an ongoing part of my life.

It’s important to know when to be silent and what not to share.
Observing silence is all I do, because there is no others. I'm a total hermit.
I'm a naturally talkative fellow, but growing up in an abusive home taught me silence early. Silence has benefited me at times, and I'm said to give off an air of serenity. It's also cost me. There's a difference between being silent, and keeping your head down and your mouth shut.

Me too. My husband turns my words around on me, mocks me. I'm 70 and I have shut down telling him my thoughts.

These are both beautiful perspectives 😌 thank you 🙏

'He who speaks, does not know. He who knows does not speak.' Zen.
I think that quote comes from the Tao Te Ching (?)
The big problem is, Lao Tzu actually "spoke" those words. Maybe he was just laughing at himself.

We'd start with a minute of hands on desk, sitting up straight, closing eyes, and listening to the sounds (usually the cooling or heating that was on, sometimes the teacher & students in the next class/es) Kids would be amazed at their ability to hear what they never noticed before, and they'd often WANT to do it "Again, Yesss"!?)
I practice listening to my body - That comes with practice & mindfulness, and listening to the sound of silence is a wonderful prep. "If you listen to your body when it whispers, you won't have to hear it scream" It's healthy & OH SO BENEFICIAL!! Namaste from USA🙏!!
" Naturally meditative "
That's the key word i learned today.
Keeping 10 minutes of silence 3 to 4 times a day will make me natural meditative, it will help me go in meditation naturally. I will not be bored when I sit for meditation.

It made me reflect on my thoughts, listen to my emotions and respond in a gentle manner
It made me realize that silence is the best antidote for stress and emotions
Wonderful to hear 🙏🏻 Thank you for sharing 🌻
If you are not the body or mind then you don't tap into anything that could be considered feminine
I go weeks without talking. I love it. It gives your brain the time and space to know what you need to know.
Just wondering, was it difficult at first to start doing that?
I tend to be a quiet, albeit nervous person in group settings. When I can, I often bring a small needlework or some crochet to help me calm down. It seems to create a sense of peace. Chatty people will come by and it’s easy to just listen. Quiet people might offer a quiet hello and then we will share an amicable silence.
Thank you for sharing your perspective 😊
I loved this , Thank you
I wish more people would grasp this concept and would start to feel the power of silence.
Excellent presentation, very helpful easy to understand. Thank you. You are the best life coach.
Silence is an empty room, that does not add up one bit my friend
Thank you 4 the video❤
Sometimes I talk more sometimes I listen more. I have my own flow and trust that flow in the moment.
Just brilliant 😊
The less I need to talk, the fewer acquaintances I make. Small talk is social trade and I can't (but I've also had a near death experience and some big shifts that changes that stuff). I don't need to share my private stuff with most people. I may choose too but I don't need to, and people don't like that lol
At the expense of breaking the silence to share my silly opinion… this video is incredible. Thank you for sharing this message.
“Words deceive but energy never lies.” True but as a sufferer of social anxiety, I can tell you that sometimes my energy is way off because of an innocent irrational but harmless (to others) internal struggle. My point is we should listen to energy but consider context and be sensitive to all we don’t know about others.
Listen and observe compassionately 😊
I absolutely love this. Thank you. Needed this. Time to evolve.💯
A silent thank you, Elizabeth 🙏🏽
It's hard when you've built this image as an outgoing talkative person and you really want to change that. Then everyone thinks there's something wrong and they have a hard time believing you when you say there isn't.
They will get used to it.
It’s about time someone addresses this !!!
Thank you very much for your inspiration.
Love the sound of silence.
G R E A T !!!
Most talk because they feel compelled to say something,
few talk because they have something to say ...
Thank you for the info/video ! 😊❤
I will try this spiritual SILENCE starting tomorrow morning, I have noticed myself talking more lately and also not being able to relax as I used to. I'm hoping practicing SILENCE will help me in several aspects of my life!🙏☯️⛩☮☸
🙏🏻🧘🏻♀️🌹
Read up on film star Erol Flynn. People said they felt like they’d had a martini after being with him just a little while; he was so relaxed that everyone around him could relax. So maybe pretend you just had a martini ..?
Thank you for your intuitive insight and journey into the awareness of self. Silent is the key to unlock our soul. Blessings
You are welcome my friend. 🙏🏻 Thank you!!! 🌻💕🧘🏻♀️🌺
@@ElizabethHancock Hi, why did you explained a lot about talking and sharing, but did not showed a silence at all 🤔
Silence is a powerful tool; if your aim is to ‘investigate’ another.
That’s not been my experience.
Thank you, first the quality of the video and the subs below are really good. Yes silence is golden
Thanks 🙏🏼 for this, I immediately signed up for your newsletter!
I am interested in silence more than noise, specially in my mind ! 🙏🏼Sat Nam 💚
Dear Elizabeth,
When I heard your voice I feel like there is sipritual power to connect with inner wisdom.
Thank you
Johnny
“A silent ongoing energetic exchange” 😊 Thank you!
You're welcome! 🙏
This is really good. It got me thinking about my own habits and what might be motivating them. Also, you have a calmness, a confidence, and an exquisite articulation that makes your message even more powerful. Thank you. I will watch more of your videos.
I don’t care what a ‘guru’ thinks.
Ultimate enlightenment
I think it’s important to be observant!
