I just set up a 10 gallon quarantine after losing my 55 gallon tank to an ick out break about $80 worth of fish. I actually decorated it and such and run a filter an air stone sand and a heater and when there’s no fish in quarantine there’s always an 18 cent feeder fish in there just to maintain the cycle
i feel ya lost $40 worth of fish it might add to $60 if the other 4 die :( just set up a 10 gallon today for my 37 gallon tank i didn't think I'd have to do it so quickly.
Thanks for the info! I'm getting a new tank setup and want to make sure I quarantine. My betta got sick after I purchased a Cory cat and didn't quarantine. Now I know.... LOL
@@rickeeepps6461 yes he lived for 2 years..... he was happy and healthy after several runs of medicine. I use Aquarium Co-op treatment regimen. It works!

I just want to ask (idek if you will see this) but, I’m looking at getting more fish and I need a quarantine tank. I have one tank (fluval flex 15 gallon) that’s already set up but I only have the one filter that it comes with and I just don’t know what to do I’m really confused. I would need to buy a new filter but I don’t really have the space to keep another big bulky filter in my tank for weeks until I can put it in the quarantine tank. So is there anyway around this I just don’t know what to do like do I need to take the whole sponge with the bio media stuff and the pump and put it in the quarantine tank and replace it in my established one? Or buy new stuff completely? I’m just really confused. Idk if this will make sense or not but I appreciate the help.
How do you transfer fish from the quarantine tank to the display tank? Do you use your quarantine net, or use your display net? Do you transfer directly to the display tank, or to an intermediary container first? Thanks!
I personally will use any of the nets. In my mindset, if the fish are clean enough to go in my display tank, the net should be okay. I'll throw media straight back into the filter as well (assuming the fish have been cured). Some people don't, others use a bucket in the middle, some will use their display tank net. However you're most comfortable
@@TrekOnTheAir Ok, good! That was my line of thought too, however it seems in the dozen or so videos I've watched about quarantine no one mentions transferring fish out. They (usually) mention needing separate equipment, which makes my mind boggle at the concept of needing separate equipment but needing some method of transferring the fish to your display tank. There'd surely need to be something that touches both tanks.
Yep. Like I said, some people use in intermediate. the fill up a bucket of tank water from their display tank, the net the fish with their quarantine that, drop them in the water without putting the net in the water, then take their display take net-net them out of the bucket and put them in the display tank. That was my original plan to do it, and I was watching a live stream about quarantining, and Cory from Aquarium Co-op said he doesn't break down QT tanks if the fish come out healthy, because in theory if the fish are good, the tank is good. And that made sense to me, so that's what I do. 🤷♂️
I have a 10 gallon tank. I use it a holder/quarantine now. I have a betta that had ick. I rinsed the tank out, after he got better. How should i clean the tank? Or just dose it with a general?
If all the equipment for the quarantine tank is supposed to be kept separate from and not used on the main tank, what do you use to transfer the fish from the quarantine to the main once they are ready?
I drip acclimate in a 5 gallon bucket. Put a gallon of treatment water with fish in bucket with heater and bubble stone. Then drip water from the established aquarium for an hour or 2 drips at 2 or 3 drips per second. Then net fish from bucket into established aquarium. Make sure temp is the same in bucket and aquarium before you add the fish to bucket. That is what I do
Question-I am moving an Oranda goldfish from an outdoor warm water container pond, to an indoor cool water larger stock tank pond that already has fish in it. Do I need to quarantine or just acclimate? She’s going from 80 degrees Fahrenheit to 68/70 degrees Fahrenheit. She appears healthy. Should I maybe move her into a quarantine tank for observation for a few days?
I didn’t care about quarantining either and for two years I got away with it until recently my 55 gallon got ich and 15 cherry barbs, 5 otocinclus and 5 yo-yo loaches died. I have a few troopers still but decided to order some Rainbows online that are for sure getting quarantined.
Just experienced this added new fish to display tank didn’t notice it had bacterial infection all my old fish died but 1. Starting a quarantine tank… cleaned old tank with vinegar I hope that disinfects
This happened to me. I had a tank with a betta, 4 otocinclas, and 8 neon tetras. I brought home *1* more oto and now I only have two of the original otos left.
I do for at least a week. It helps accelerate any ich if i can't necessarily see it at first. If the fish has Ich, I keep the temp up until the ich is gone for 2 weeks.
I have a betta and 2 plecos coming in (I think on Monday and Wednesday) and I have failed to look into quarantining them... i have a 10 gallon (this has a african dwarf from and teo harley quin tetras living in) up and running already cycled and my 29 gallon that I just started cycling on Thursday which has 2 live plants. I also have a spare 1 gallon tank that is empty.. no water either what would you recommend I do??
@@TrekOnTheAir I am setting up a new tank with a frosted background and black water heaters stand out against a white-ish background. I am looking for a good water heater for a 120 gallon that is grey or clear. Any suggestions?
hey Mike very informative video..As embarrassing as it is for me I will this will be first quarantine setup.Ive been lucky so far, but its never too late to start for the safety of the fish.I found a spare 5.5. gallon amongst all my fish stuff..lol.Before adding my next additions to my main tank I will be quarantining them.Another thing I heard you mention the trio med pack from aquarium Co op that Cory sells, these meds will not affect any cycled media going to the QT tank correct?
I have a question. I am currently treating for ich in my 5gal tank. I’m heartbroken because the ich ravaged my community tank and killed 90% of my fish. My question is what to do with the filtration media that was in the tank during the outbreak? Do I sanitize or do I replace with new? Thanks. Love your channel btw
I’m upgrading my 20 gal to a 63 gal and I’m using my 20 as as quarantine...I don’t like the idea of my new rainbow shark and cichlids from having to stay in a 5 gallon for a month.
Are they coming from the same source? If they are, I'd put them in the same tank. If not, I'd do separate if you have the space. If not, put them together and just be aware of the risks of it.
6 months might be more for growing out than a quarantine.. but i guess if your main tank has a few hundred or thousands of dollars of fish i could justify waiting that long to introduce
Eh-rith-row-my-sin, general cure, and ick x. (Not making fun btw, just spelling it out phonetically). Thanks for the video. It is really helpful! Also, is there any ACTUAL difference between table salt and aquarium salt? I looked it up once and it looked like they were both just regular sodium chloride, but that might just be the search engine not knowing what I want... Also, what kind of siphon do you use for that small of a tank? Mine loses suction halfway through my 60g lol
Biomass shouldn't affect medication. Isn't it mostly for ammonia and nitrates? Carbon is a chemical filtration. So, yes it would neutralize the medication.
Very personable presentation. Michael kept my attention throughout the video, and answered my questions on setting up a quarantine fish tank.
I love community tanks and was thinking of getting one when a friend mentioned this to me. Better safe than sorry!
