    When I got into the hobby back around 1983, I knew nothing about cycling a tank. I got my Uncle's 125g tank, put water in the tank, setup the filters and added fish to the tank. I never ever cycled a tank and never lost a fish. All fish thrived and grew very large. I guess those fish were like us old heads and build stronger than today's young'ns, haha!. I never cycled a tank until I started keeping African Cichlids not too many years ago.

      @@kittygirl_thetortie498 They were Oscars, Red Devils, Convicts, Pikes, Piranhas, Managuense, Jack Dempsey, Gars Texas Cichlids. Bought them as little fish that grew big and healthy. The Oscars, Red Devils and Convicts all had babies in the tank (125g). Believe it or not, I kept all those fish in the same tank together and they got along pretty well, even the piranhas. People thought they would attack me when I cleaned the tank, but they never bothered me and actually avoided me when I cleaned the tank. Those Convicts were the mean ones protecting their babies and would attack my hand, but only when I got near their babies, which is to be expected.

      If you get starter water with bacteria from a reliable aquatic pet store & add some spring water…heat that bad boy up you can add fish in like a day. The starter water already has good bacteria. Just no tap water. But that starter water from a store that is already cycled can be pricey. You need a third to two thirds of the water to be cycled water with the rest spring water. Works great for hearty fish like Bettas. It’s better than keeping them in an unheated tiny bowl 🤦‍♂️ Too many people take Bettas home from petco & put them in a tiny 1 gallon bowl on their desk at work in an air conditioned environment. They need heat & space. Just cause you bought them in a tiny cup doesn’t mean they thrive in a small cold space.

Plus I change my water once a month sometimes more if I noticed excess build up. All of them are thriving

    Aw my man! Such glorious information you provide!
    I’ve “inherited” a single 7yro gold fish in a 10g tank w/light that I know nothing about! Somehow, after a year, I’ve kept it alive, albeit with your help!
    It has a HOB filter and I’ve added an oxygen pump. I bought a water test kit and realize the nitrates are high after two weeks, I assume from over feeding, my fault.
    I’ll do a full water change, with 5ml of Prime and Stability, as you say, about every two weeks, careful to keep new water temp close to what’s in the tank, with a new filter. All other parameters look fine, just the nitrates are high.
    Q: Am I doing enough?
    Q: Should I add another fish for company?
    Finally, after about six hours, this fish will “kiss” the glass repeatedly as if to say “Buddy, enough with the light!” I’ll turn it off and he calms down. Is this normal?
    Thank you so much!

    Dude, you are what I call a Cichlidiot, and that is not a bad thing. I used to be a Cichlidiot with 15 tanks of different sizes because I always wanted a new fish that couldn't be kept with the fish I already had. I started with a 10 gallon, then a 20 gallon, then 55, I kept the 55 and added a 60 gallon, then I got rid of both and got a 120, I grew tired of the120 because it was only 4 feet long and it was on a big wall, so I got a 6 foot long 125 gallon, Then I moved to a bigger house with a lot of empty basement space and slowly filled it with small tanks for breeding, My electric bill got so high that I got rid of everything and dug a 3500 gallon Koi pond in the yard, one filter pump a 40watt UV light and no more heaters at 1500watts each, I did all the work myself except I needed a few people to put the liner in and my son helped me with 4 tons of decorative rock surrounding the pond. I left out a few 75 and 90 gallon tanks between the others for Discus and saltwater fish. BTW I found the first video of yours about 10 days ago and have watched and enjoyed a few of them.

    Hi Kev. I was hoping to get your opinion on a new tank I’m setting up. A 75-Gallon Lake Tanganyika Tank. I have a question regarding how I should add these fish to their new home.
    Just a little info about the tank (in its current state)...It's a 75 Gallon Display tank with a 40-Gallon Sump. The aquascape includes Aragonite sand and some crushed coral to buffer the PH, many pounds of Seiryu Stones that have been glued in place (to protect the Cichlids that like to dig), and a few hardy low-light plants. The tank has been filled (no fish yet) and filtering for about 5-weeks. Current water test readings show 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrites, and 10-20 ppm Nitrates. It's clearly in the cycling process.
    I’m working with my local fish store to order 4-species of Lake Tanganyika fish for this tank. Approximately 20 juvenile fish (1-2 in size).
    - Neolamprologus multifasciatus
    - Neolamprologus leleupi
    - Julidochromis transcriptus
    - Cyprichromis leptosome
    However, I’m realizing that his shipments are very erratic. If I’m fortunate enough to get everything I ordered, it will probably take months. What he does receive will most likely arrive in small partial shipments.

    I’ve seen many videos about ways of acclimating new cichlids into an existing tank in order to minimize aggression, but that’s difficult for me to do. Most of my aquascape is glued in place, and once I place a fish in there it will be nearly impossible to get him out. Because of this my thought was to add all the fish at once (I know this is frowned upon). Just prior to stocking the tank I would be able to move several bags of bio-media and a couple of small sponge filters from an existing tank into the sump. I’d also start dosing the tank with Seachem Stability. My tank is already showing signs of cycling, so this would add to the beneficial bacteria that already exists.
    My Dilemma…
    Should I stick to my original plan of stocking this tank all at once, even though I may not be able to do that for another month (or longer), or should I slowly add the fish I ordered as they are received (and hope there’s limited aggression when I do so)?
    Appreciate your opinion on this.

    Seachem should totally sponsor you. I'm new with aquariums and I only got to know about seachem after watching your videos. Your videos are so very helpful, I've even taken down notes for future reference...lol the nerd in me just can't help it. You should consider publishing a book. Complete guide for beginners and for the advanced. A nerd like me would 100% buy it :)

    Thanks so much for the advice! I just switched from a 55 gallon to a 125 gallon long tank! I got a fx6 filter, that was supposed to be cycled already, but I'm not really sure. I'm gonna get some prime and stability now ! 😅 I have a few platys, mollies, one electric blue accara, few ottos, three plecos..two bristlenose an one clown. Also have a few snails, khuli loaches , and two dojo loaches. The dojo loaches are new. I dont want to lose my other fish 😢 I added a sponge filter that was in the 55 , so technically I did use a cycled filter media. Just not sure yet if it's enough to help the cycle.

    Last time I setup a tank I bought the tank 110 gallon. Bought two filters. Put the two filters on two of my other heavily stocked cichlid tanks for a month. Setup the tank out the filters on and let it clear up over night. When I took the filters off one tank and put it on the new tank I didn't clean them. So the morning after setting up the tank I put 25 4-6 inch African Cichlids in. Never had a ammonia spike or nitrite. Never had an bacteria bloom and within two weeks I had 45 Cichlids in the tank. No stability or anything else. This was two almost three months ago. Still no spikes and haven't lost any fish. So just a suggestion if your going to get a tank decide what size your going to buy what fish your putting in it and buy the filters for it in advance. Set them up on one of your other tanks or if you don't have one ask a friend if you could put it on there for a month or so.

      Using seeded media is always the best method to quickly cycle a new tank. The method I showed in this video was for those that dont have access to seeded media, like brand new tank owners entering the hobby.

      If I add fish to a brand new 75 gallon tank following your cycling method does that tank also become the quarantine tank for those new fish?

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  3 года назад

      If there werent any other fish already in there, yes. You're basically quarantining them by keeping them away from other fish 😊 You can medicate your entire 75 to ensure you kill any disease the new guys may come with. I would start with simple general cure and ich-x. But make sure there isnt any carbon in your filters. After 1 round of meds add the carbon to help remove all the meds.

    Next time you want to get rid of the tannins. You could use a sous vide device instead of having to keep filling up with the plastic container with hot water over and over for 24 hours. The sous vide will keep the temperature you select for up to 90 hours at a time. The temperatures will never drop. You might have to add a little water now and then to compensate for the evaporation.👍

    I used stability and prime for 3 weeks and it did absolutely nothing! My ammonia levels rose to 6 PPM, so I gave up at that point. I then decided to seed my tank with a seasoned sponge from an old tank -- boom! My tank cycled in two days.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 года назад +1

      Using seeded media is the number 1 way to cycle a tank instantly. But some people, like beginners with their first tank, dont have access to seeded media, which is when Prime and Stability can be used to cycle.
      If your ammonia rose to 6ppm while using prime and stability then something was not allowing new beneficial bacteria to grow. Which can be caused by many things.
