    Awesome example of how to set up a quarantine tank before introducing new fish in your established tank! Iknow this video is 4 years old but you explain this whole process so much better than any current videos I've seen. Just you sitting there physically showing us what you use and throwing it in the tank is a great way for people to see exactly what you should do. So many videos now just spit out the same bullet points from the internet in front of a green screen.

    Excellent monologue on quarantine tanks. There's so many videos on quarantine tanks but most just vaguely explain how to set up a bare tank and neglect to describe the actual purpose. I liked how you provided further explanation on WHY to setup a qt tank. There's really 100's of ways to set up a quarantine tank, but just one main reason for doing it.

    The only thing you didn't cover is ph. I keep cichlids and my water is a little to soft. So I have to use crushed coral to raise and keep it up. I don't want to keep buying it for a quarantine tank. So is there a way to keep it in between. Without worrying about something bad growing.

    • @CorvusOscen
      @CorvusOscen  6 лет назад +1

      Well, with the cichlid quarantine, I'd still go with crushed coral, it's not going to take all that much for a small 20 gallon. If it's too expensive, possibly look into a bulk bag and store it in a bucket with a scoop so you can use little amounts at a time.

    Do you always medicate your quarantined fish?
    I know Aquarium Coop suggests dosing Ich X, general cure, and Erythromycin.
    I usually follow the same protocol, but I have a quarantine tank that has been set up, no meds, for two weeks now. Everyone looks great. Should I medicate them just in case?

    • @CorvusOscen
      @CorvusOscen  5 лет назад +2

      That is really on a case by case basis, there is no need to medicate a healthy animal. That said, imports are often super stressed and susceptible to having some disease and are already sick in some fashion. Treating all the imports is the best practice in that situation, best care is basically what I can advice, though a healthy mature system should always have fish in a holding quarantine for observation before getting added in.

    Great and important video. I hope that everyone found it as simple and straightforward as I did. Your videos and streams are always so down to earth. You make them feel like friends just hanging out sharing experiences and knowledge and that is super cool.
    One question though, can you quarantine in a set up tank that just has snails and a few plants? ( After adding seeded media ) I have 3, 1-5 gallon tanks set up with just pond snails and a few plants and was wondering if that would work. (For small community fish) I have an empty 10 gallon to use also. Just wondering.
    Thanks 😊

      amy marie - I'd just observe the tanks you have up and running now, treat with meds if a problem develops, the med trio Joel suggests is plant and snail safe- then from this point going forward, set up a small QT tank for any new additions. Just my opinion, someone else may feel differently.

    How do you manage to measure safe for such small volumes of water? The directions make it seem like overly complicated, like X number of grains for anything less than hundreds of gallons. I'd like to use Safe more, I'm just intimidated that I could accidentally hurt my fish by using too much in a small tank!

    • @bk2pla
      @bk2pla 6 лет назад

      Savanna The Aqua Llama - I use a product called Clor-Am X, pretty much the same as Safe with similar directions. I did the brain figuring one time for my sized tanks and my pond and then wrote just those numbers on the tub. However, I have hugely over dosed a couple times by accident and never saw any issues. Ymmv though. But I think it’s not an issue imo.

  • @Benjamin-nm4jd

    20gal storage bins from Homedepot and Walmart for $9 is much better, you need heater, an airpump with either air stone or sponge filter, just throw your new fish in there, put the combo meds recommended by Cory and treat them new fish for a week and you're pretty much good to go. Don't even bother with any bio filter for quarantine tank as the meds you use will wipe out all beneficial bacterias anyway, just don't feed the fish while they're being quarantined for a week and they'll be fine.

    Our QT tank *was* supposed to be temporary. That was until the new shrimp order arrived with a berried female that gave birth during quarantine.
    This is because the previous berried female gave birth in the planted display tank, but then the only tank inhabitants (two _Hara jerdoni_ ) ate all the baby blue shrimp within three days. She [Momma shrimp] died the next morning which left the display tank without a cleaner crew. So my wife decided to grow out the new babies in the QT tank which has now turned into a ""temporary" shrimp tank. I use the term "temporary" loosely.
    We have one brilliantly colored Red Cherry shrimp female that somehow slipped in during our Sunkist Orange order, without a home though (currently housed in the QT tank). She's simply too beautiful to let go so I have the feeling that my wife has a new tank in mind before the baby blue shrimp mature enough to mate with her.
    I implored her to get an ugly container of some kind for a QT tank, but she wanted a glass five gallon because it wouldn't make her kitchen look ugly while it's "temporarily" set up. There's that word again. The whole thing is madness!
    Keep up the good work my friend.
