    I like the fill and empty method during the water change in the other video. I always wanted to try that method myself. Thanks for the shout out man. I sometimes like to use the lava rubble method depending on the scape. Probably is a better method for larger aquariums. Mine are all too small at the moment, so thanks for bringing this method to life and for the shout out.

    55G 2 inches minimum of ProMix organic potting soil covered with 1/2" of thoroughly rinsed coarse construction sand.
    It made the water a little yellow at first from the tannins but that cleared up after a few 10% water changes.
    My plants love it.

    I have been watching dirted tank videos for days and I wish I had seen this one a long time ago. It has been most helpful. The only thing I would change is you sift and we the soil before putting it in. It helps keep air bubbles out. I also squeezed out the excess water before placing it in the bottom. It really it’s down any cloudy seepage issues with the dirt. I’m using your lava rock trick. You just got a follower. Awesome job!

    Using the soil with the rubble in the bags looks like it works very well together! Also, we recommend vermiculite in the hobby, but is actually a bad clay to recommend. Bentonite, kitty litter, is a far better option. vermiculite structure actually makes nutrients unobtainable and holds on too well.

    • @AQUAPROS
      @AQUAPROS  7 лет назад +3

      Thats interesting about the vermiculite, Ive used it in the past, ill have to look into that.

    • @ADUAquascaping

      DIY AQUAPROS yeah look into it. I may be misremembering the reason why, but I remember learning it is a less desirable option in my soils class. I am pretty sure they are more unobtainable, but I could be off. I will check my book to make sure.

    This is a warning to any beginners to the hobby watching this video. A dirt tank should not be your first tank. We followed this video pretty much step by step to try and do our first tank and the soil really fucked things up. When we looked into it more most discussion boards on the topic recommended doing a lot more things to the soil before just putting it into your tank. It's a nice video but just maybe don't do this for a first tank.

    • @fredrikmudas
      @fredrikmudas 6 лет назад +33

      agreed. make sure you have your soil clean from any debris, I use a garden soil mix with organic compost. to decrease a bubble which will come up later, try to stir it (after you add water as much as the height of the dirt) when you set up the layer substrate so a lot of bubbles will come out and then you can top it with sand and then supersmall gravel. the sand will keep the dirt mix with the top layer so there will be no soil leach to the water column. Happy Aquascaping~

      You should keep in mind dirt tanks don't last forever. They will wear out and require a full reboot. If you are in it for the long haul learn a bit about liquid ferts and go with an inert substrate.

    What you THINK and what is TRUTH are polar opposites! I have personal experience in dirted tanks and I can tell you with absolute certainty that if you add too much dirt (over 2"), and just leave the wood chips in the tank you WILL create an anaerobic condition especially with sand and an outrageous amount of hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell) that will only be assisted with the chunks of wood left in the tank. I've had to break down a tank due to this (not enough research) and start all over. My fish were pale as a ghost and on the verge of death. After setting a 1-1.5" limit on dirt (i used window screen to filter large particulate) and 1" substrate cap the result was a night and day difference in the health of the fish and removed the smell of the hydrogen sulfide from the tank.

    • @deafpilot6425
      @deafpilot6425 5 лет назад +8

      Sounds to me like the appropriate amount of dirt should be based on the volume of the tank and not by the rule of thumb you specified either.

    I've had mine set up for about a year now. At first the tannins were bad but I got rid of that with purigen. It works wonders for heavy root feeders. But to be honest, I have not seen a big difference with stem plants. I also have flourite planted tanks and they're doing just as well as the dirt, no root tabs either. The big downsides are obviously the mess when uprooting plants, and second is the smell. Some of those bubbles that form and rise to the surface if you disturb smell horrific. I've done afew more dirted tanks and always had that problem.

    • @Awesomeday007
      @Awesomeday007 Год назад

      Just wet your soil before you add it to the tank. I soak mine to avoid bubbles & tannins, and squeeze out the excess water , & it’s perfect to eliminate future problems

  • @RandySoWavvy
    @RandySoWavvy 4 года назад

    Eco complete seems to be amazing also doesn’t cloud or muddy the water. Just pour it straight from the bag into the tank then fill the tank up add root tabs to the soil and ferts for about 6 months and then you’ll be set

  • @jackd5181
    @jackd5181 5 лет назад +1

    I would put the top gravel layer before the parts of the hardscape, just to make sure no soil from around the hardscape isn’t covered up and cloud up the water. I plan on doing a soil setup on my 31 gallon for the first time and I think I’m going to overkill the top substrate, by doing soil, coarse gravel and then smoother but still coarse sand

    Great build! Here's my question with substrates: won't the plants eventually use up the nutrients in the special plant substrate, to where root tabs will be necessary? If so, then is there much of a benefit to planted substrate vs. sand+root tabs?

    • @Smerdzy
      @Smerdzy 4 года назад +13

      Fish waste basically adds/renews the soil, so it continuously thrives. This also means that you won't need to clean the surface of your substrate either, as the soil benefits from the waste and leftovers :)

      @@mootsym It does though. Root tabs are there as a helping hand if you don't already have what the soil provides. After that point the fish waste becomes a substitute for nutrients instead of tabs and soil. So, the fish waste renews the soil. Y'all could be a little nicer when getting help from someone answering your question. Especially when they were the only one who bothered.

    Hope that work bench isn't made of particle board which it looks like it is .Also unless it extremely sturdy and properly braced your going to warp or destroy that cabinet . Gravel plus water plus glass makes for a pretty heavy tank . I've seen what can happen when tanks leak onto particle wood such as those cheaply made stands at the pet stores . Usually they lack proper bracing and use substandard hardware . Although your countertop and cabinet are stronger it's still not a safe set up.
    The best type of wood to use for this kind of set up is marine grade plywood and proper bracing . I've made a few cabinets specifically for tanks and usually overbuild them and also have earthquake straps attached to the stand.
    Also you might try putting the co2 in the output of the filter to better dissolve the gas and distribute it . I put mine in a plastic bottle and then under a power head .The results were excellent.
    Not trying to give you a hard time but you can't be to careful about safety and fish tanks . I've worked in a hatchery and been around this hobby for a long time now and I've seen the results of using unsafe materials for a stand . @ 8 pounds per gallon and everything else the weight can add up fast .
    Ludwigia is a bog plant that tends to enjoy living on the edges of the shoreline and spreading out .The best experience I've had with it was in a 55 gallon terrarium set up that had salamanders and some newts. I put some along the edge of the dry part of the set up where I had small ferns and moss and the Ludwigia crept up on the shoreline and really gave it an awesome look as it stayed low and branched out like you see in it's habitat . I love the colors of that plant but most times it loses those awesome reds when down to deep in a tank and starts looking spindly and pale especially in deep tanks. This plant is really best suited for the more shallow brightly lit tanks since it doesn't tend to grow in deep water in nature. Its always good to have an idea of what environment the plants come from before considering putting them in a tank under artificial conditions. Not to mention they all have different growth rates. It truly is a balancing act but that's the fun part of the hobby.
    Aside from that good video . I thumbed up .

    Great video, I’m new to this and I just put my new plants into the gravel.... my lights took a week to come from eBay and so now they are not looking so good. Do you think I should use soil and sand as I have some in the shed. I will perhaps try to established the plants in another tank first away from the goldfish. I’m so gutted the plants are dying (of sorts) because the goldfish loved them. Great video mucho helpo.

    Did this with my tank and am having issues with brown/yellow water. From what I’ve researched it’s tannin. I figured it was just the soil making the water murky, but it comes back even after a big water change. My snails and plecos are happily cleaning the tank, and the plants are growing just fine. I’m just wondering what to do about the discoloration. I’m assuming patience and water changes are key, but I would like to hear any input you all may have. Should I keep my wave maker running to speed up the process of releasing all of the tannin?

      Water change will help and also try to add almond dried leaf for water clearance

    Do you have to 'wash' the soil first before putting it in the tank?

    • @_adansonii
      @_adansonii 4 года назад +1

      it depends of what you're using, if you're using a sealed bag of sand or some type of dirt substrate, you shouldn't need to rinse it, but if you get a gravel substrate rinse it, in the time it takes for the setup to go through the nitrate cycle, you shouldnt have to worry

    • @_adansonii
      @_adansonii 4 года назад +1

      i should also mention, soil is definitely not something you should use without any background information on the plants you're using or if its your first time making a natural setup

    Great video brother! I had to put it off till Monday so I could work on my corner tanks lighting setup. I also am running the Planted Plus 24/7 on my 55gallon. I have two of them, but just one is running on it now. Only bamboo and anubias nana in it now. About to dirt my 34 gallon corner tank so this video hit at a great time. Keep up the awesome work.

    wow I never thought about adding planting soil into an aquarium tank. is it safe for the fishes? I'm thinking of setting up a plant tank but been doing so much research on what's good and what isn't. most of what I read they use the Amazon soil but they are pretty expensive. seeing you use soil got my attention but I'm afraid if it would be bad for my fishes. I'm looking to get just a few fishes and maybe some shrimps.

    Do we just lightly plant in sand or do we push down 2”?
