Quarantine Tank - Why its important (Easy Setup)

  • Fighting an ICK outbreak isn't fun. With a Quarantine Tank you can help stop the spread and treat the disease before it gets out of hand. Having a quarantine tank is a must in the fish keeping hobby. Any new fish, no matter where you get them from, are susceptible to disease and should go into Quarantine. While in transit to their new home fish can be severely stressed which weakens their immune systems. A quarantine tank allows your new fish time to de-stress, heal any wounds, and get acclimated to new water conditions.

    What about keeping a small quarantine tank running at all times, with just a snail and plants in little pots, that can be moved to my main tank if the quarantine tank is needed?
    Then it almost doesn't matter when the new fish joins the community tank, because the little one will always be a nice display in it's own right... And easy enough to bleach out if things do go bad.

    With 10 healthy happy juveniles and it’s mostly because of your great content you put out.
    If you get around to this comment I could use some help.
    I just bought 5 more juveniles and they are currently in a 16 gallon quarantine tank. Is this too small of a tank for them to be quarantined in? Two out of the 5 are very aggressive and are rally stressing out the other three. What should I do? Thinking of returning the two bullies to the fish shop and keeping the rest .
    Thanks in advance

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  3 года назад +4

      Glad you're enjoying the channel bro! Yea depending on their size the quarantine tank may be too small. If you dont separate the bullies soon the others will die from the stress. You can get a cheap 10 gallon tank or even a plastic tote for the 2 bullies, its just temporary, to make sure everyone stays alive.

    Maybe I'm just old fashioned and behind the curve on current recs, but I always just added some stress coat and aquarium salt to my quarantine tank then covered it with a semi-opaque cloth for a day or two before feeding anything at all and within a week if they weren't showing any signs of needing more care, plopped them in my tank. However I was often quarantining pretty sizeable fish in a 20gal because I was the go to offload for tank busters that got surrendered to my LFS and was the only one who shopped there regularly with a tank bigger than 10-20 gallons (I had a 75 African cichlid tank). And this was like 15-20 years ago 😅

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  Год назад

      That is a great method as well. Aquarium salt works great as a prophylactic and stress coat helps in keeping them calm while dechlorinating water as well. There are more products available now but your way wasnt wrong 😊

    Have some more questions :-)
    How do you set up your quarantine tank? Do you use water from your main tank for this? Do you use a (sponge)filter from your main tank that already has the beneficial bacteria?
    And what do you do with the quarantine tank áfter quarantine(knowing you're going to be adding more fish later on ... or not)? Do you let the water sit with the filter and air stone running? If the fish were sick, than do you empty the tank and 'sanitize' it(and with what?)? And if you want to prep your spongefilter for another 'batch' can you just put it back in your main tank in attendance? Or d you have a way to desinfect your filter too?
    Sorry for the many questions, I want to start my very first fish tank and I want to make sure that I'm doing everything right :-) I don't wanna already lose any fish in the first months of my new tank ;-)

    to my understanding if i read it correctly, ich actually can't be cured while it is in the fish, nor can it be killed when it detaches from the fish, only when it detaches and hatches from new eggs and becomes free swimming can it be killed in the water completely. does paraguard kill ich in the water and will uv filters also help kill it?

    • @KaveManAquatics

    I think the kind of fish you are getting and how they look determine whether or not I quarantine. I typically do not quarantine and have had great success with cichlids. I've also not had quarantine tanks until recently. If you're on a budget quarantine is not always possible.
    With that said, cichlids are a hardier fish in my opinion and less susceptible to disease. When dealing with mollies, platies, guppies, tetras, there is a greater risk of disease and more warrant for quarantine.

Instead if raising a fit at that store I decided to treat them in my quarantine tank first and fore most i fed them to try and get some vital nutrients back in their system to help fight off an infection. I’m looking to add fish in a few weeks. I have an older 29 gallon tank with gravel. Should I remove the gravel? I guess I should cycle it and prep it for the next few weeks (can probably use some water from my existing tank to start?). Do you run the quarantine tank 24/7 365 days a year? I’ve been fortunate to be illness-free for quite some time. Seems that I’ll be running an empty tank the majority of the time. I’ll likely only add fish this one time in the near future.

    Do u have to let your quarantine tank cycle like your main tank or will just moving over my sponge filter into for the time being work, and after quarantine can u move your sponge filter back into the main tank, and as always great video dont know how I missed this one but thanks.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  3 года назад

      A seeded sponge filter will cycle your quarantine tank instantly. If there was no signs of any disease while your guys were in quarantine then yes you can put it back in your main tank, just give it a good cleaning (squeezing it into a bucket).
      If you did see some signs of disease the medications you used will also kill anything on your sponge filter, just make sure you allow for enough quarantine time to make sure whatever you're treating is gone.

      Dont water change yet, continue with daily Prime and you could also add stability daily to boost your cycle time. Only water change when you reach about 40PPM of nitrate. Hy Kave, is it ok if I used Melafix and then I add Salt?

  • @christianbradshaw6176
    @christianbradshaw6176 4 года назад

    So I have a dilemma & maybe you can help me out! This is going to be a long comment but I just want to make sure I’m doing everything right! I have been putting my show tank through hell as of the last couple days because I added 4 new African Cichlids to the tank without quarantine & it was a stupid mistake! I currently do not have a quarantine set up but I’m changing that now! 1 of my new cichlids about a day after I got him showed signs of ich so I acted fast & ordered aquarium solutions ICH X! in the meantime on waiting for that to come in mail I slowly raised the temperature of my main tank to 84 degrees over 24 period and then dosed aquarium salt @ a ratio of 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt per 3 gallons of water and I have a 75 gallon tank so I believe I’m currently @ around 2 parts per thousand of aquarium salt which I new would make it hard on the ich disease! I have plenty of aeration and water flow in the tank as well!! Well the next day my 1 cichlid that showed signs of ich all of his white spots disappeared but then I noticed he had signs of Fin rot as well! Currently none of my other 11 African cichlids are showing signs of ich or fin rot but im taking no chances so I want to set up a hospital tank and remove my 1 cichlid that previously showed signs of ich and currently has fin rot to the hospital tank & treat him solo so he can fully recover his fin rot and ich solo and peacefully! I am also going to aggressively treat for ich in my main tank & then after aggressively treat for fin rot so I’m 100% safe ! My main question in setting up my hospital tank which is going to be 10 gallons by the way is do I take 10 gallons of water from my main tank so the water parameters are the exact same or do I just add 10 gallons of tap water and then treat the water like I would treat it in my main tank? I’m going to move over my sponge filter from my main tank so I can instantly cycle the hospital tank bc of time constraint & wanting time get my cichlid with fin rot out ASAP & into the hospital tank. Also question about PH in the hospital tank bc my PH level in my main tank is always @ a consistent 8.2 bc I have aragonite sand and I will not be putting sand in my hospital tank so if I take 10 gallons of water from my main tank to fill the hospital tank will that PH level remain at that for the 2 weeks while I’m treating my guy in the hospital tank or will it drop? I just don’t want there to be swings in PH in the hospital tank. Hopefully this all makes sense and I’m sorry for one hell of a longer comment but I just want to make sure I’m doing everything right bc I’ve got expensive fish and I’ve now learned my lesson on quarantining fish!

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  4 года назад +3

      Glad you’ve learned your lesson. Unfortunately a lot of us have to learn this lesson the hard way before we get it. Myself included.
      So you don’t have to use water from your main tank. Just treat it, and make sure it’s the right temp. As far as PH you will want to add Cichlid lake salt and malawi buffer. Both will help raise your PH and keep it stable. Even if you added your main tank water with stable PH it will soon begin to drop without any buffer in it. Right now your aragonite sand in the main is acting as the buffer. Without any substrate in hospital you need to add buffer.
      Other than that it seems like you have a good grasp on things! I’m sure your new guy will recover quickly. And I agree, treat your entire main tank for ich. Those spots that fell of on day 1 can still linger in the tank and reattach to other fish. Good luck man!
