Love this thank you. Any suggestions to thin existing bulbs? I need to dig out a few areas and want to avoid damage to bulbs I plan to move to another area of the yard
@ The Impatient Gardener -- Dang it, I missed the date for the discount. But anyway... can you tell me which option I'd pick for the drive and tip? They offer three options: 1/2 inch hex drive; 1/2 hex drive and heavy duty tip; or 3/8 inch hex drive. I hope you see this, b/c I need to order this ASAP!
My wonderful husband bought me a power planter a few years ago. It is the BEST gift EVER. How did I continue to use a shovel for TOO many years. 😂
I love smarter not harder working. 👍🏻
We AUGER everything. 3"x24"! Changed my life!
I recently saw a fellow RUclipsr use a 9" Power Planter to bore holes large enough for 5 good sized bulbs. Auger is definitely the way to go. Thank you for this comparison video, Erin. 🌸🌿
I ordered 500 bulbs this year (No, I don’t know what I was thinking!) and I’ve been looking at these. Thanks for showing it in action. I was worried about my upper body strength but seeing you use it so easily was encouraging. I think I’ll try your method of of team planting.
"Garden smarter not harder!" Love it! My bulb order has been shipped and I think I will be adding this auger to my garden smarter tool set! Thanks Erin for sharing!
i don't know that I would have survived my ongoing garden renovation without my Power Planter augers, they are an excellent tool. Did you know on the light weight ones like the bulb ones if you add a 90 degree grip to the drill you can actually drag the auger through and make bulb trenches in seconds? I planted 2000 bulbs last year and have something like 2500 more to do this year 🤷🏻♀️
That’s a great tip! I trench, because doing individual holes makes me crazy. 😂
We trench with a pickaxe. Tried the auger a few years ago and broke 2 of them. (We also broke 2 step-on planters the same session.)
Can I tell you, Erin, how envious I am of your soil? We garden in a combination of clay and chert here in my part of Alabama.☹
Oh great tip about making trenches!
Whoa!! That's awesome information.
The Power Plant auger is Revolutionary !!!! A couple of years ago, I visited a nearby public garden who's main claim to fame is the millions (yes, really - millions) of daffodil bulbs planted on a hillside. The owner, Jim Gibbs, who graciously sits in the visitor center and answers questions said they were able to plant thousands of bulbs with two employees - one with the auger and one who dropped the bulbs in and covered them up !!! From that day forward I was hooked - not only for planting bulbs but for everything that goes in the ground. This drill/auger combo, and the quick connect hose adapters, are my most prized garden possessions !!!
Exactly that size just arrived yesterday to manage my bulb and plug planting. I have the 4" x 24 also! Love it so much I was not patient enough to wait for your promo code! 24" length with a regular tip (not the heavy duty, which may work better in clay or rocky soils) for those of you asking about the options. American invented and made by a family owned company. These are NOT the flimsy aluminum "bulb augers" that have been frustrating gardeners for years! Power Planters are very smart and hard working tools!
Oh, thank you for mentioning tips. I had shot Erin a question about that just now.. since I deal with clay here in my CT zone 6 garden, I guess I'd better go with the 1/2 hex drive and heavy duty tip.
So fun!!!! Thank you for sharing this tip… and further encouraging us to garden smarter not harder… after all-smart gardeners are those who don’t end up giving up gardening! It is hard work… and I’m a weekend/ after work Mama-gardener who has to steal away every second! Amazing editing, too! Happy Fall! 🍂🍁🍃
My father had one of those bulb planters. When he died, he left it to me. I never knew what it was for so I never used it. My father never ever in his life planted a bulb but he was ready should the day ever come. LOL ❤️
Excellent example of planting bulbs and using the right tool for the job, like your motto, work smart not hard, it will save your body so you can continue gardening for many years
“Work smarter, not harder.” One of my favorite mantras. 🌱🌻❤️
Love, love, love your videos. And the fact you are northern mid west. I lived in Wis for a few years. Cold and cold! You are wonderful and smart!! Great combo .
I got one last year. Game changer, for bulbs and other plants.
Oh no Erin, after watching your video, I just went and bought a Power Planter 324 Auger! Oh well, no excuse now for not digging lots of holes. LOL
Oh yeah. Got it today. Great company, they quickly ironed out a minor difficulty. Got the 30 inch one. Love it!!! Thanks Erin.
I planted 100 daffodil bulbs 2 yrs. I first tried an auger but kept hitting rocks. I gave up and ended up trenching and planting them in groups. In the future might be able to use an auger since I have removed so many rocks each time I plant something.
Last week Aaron (GA Aaron) said he doesn’t recommend using a drill that does not have the handle on it for auging holes because it can kick back and twist your wrist. I’m glad to see you get along good using a drill without the handle on it because I was afraid I was going to have to invest hundreds of dollars in a new drill. Thanks for showing it “in use”, Erin....bring on the bulbs!🌷
“Drilling” holes. Regardless of what GA says, “aug” is not a verb. 🙂 It depends a lot on the size you’re using and your soil. A big auger bit and/or rocky or clay soil mean you should be extra cautious to protect your wrist (and legs and feet if it gets away from you), and in those cases, a handle is a good idea.
Hey Sheila! Jumping in here to add some clarity. 1. Only use a cordless battery drill because they have a clutch. Electric drills have ZERO safety clutch. 2. Set the clutch and it is very safe. 3. The side handle is nice....but a little like a heated seat. The clutch is akin to a seatbelt. Hope that helps!
@@powerplanterinc.2967 Thank you for your reply. I have a battery powered DeWalt 20v Drill Driver (DCD771). Would that be sufficient to use with one of your augers? Seems like it might be to small.
@@sheilastromberger2275 yes
Definitely NEED that added handle for rocky soil!!!
The drill can easily twist your wrist without it!!
Unless of coarse, you happen to have dreamy soil like Erin's!
I remember Alexandra at the Middle Sized Garden wanting 'swathes of color" and it was puny. Me, too.
I had to giggle, Erin. You sounded like Crocodile Dundee. "That's not a bulb planter ... THIS is a bulb planter." :D
Hi Erin! This was fun watching, and listening to you. The competition was a good example of "working smarter, not harder". If I plant bulbs, they go into pots, and not that many. Thank you, and Power Planter, for sharing!
Thank you so much. I’ll be putting 200 tulips & daffodils with new auger drill.
Eat your heart clint eastwood erin has her power planter in hand 😂😂🌼🌼
It makes you think how the pioneers ever cleared the fields to plant their crops with the tools they had back then.
Love the philosophy of garden smarter not harder. Being a new gardener I have definitely by hard lesson learned new things about myself my yard my landscape of gardening smarter and efficiently. School of hard knocks always does it for me. The auger well I’m not ready for it just yet. I’ll be planting bulbs in pots this fall only because I’ve had such horrible experiences with planting bulbs in the ground. Has a lot to do with when I planted them I’m sure. Plus we have sprinkler pipes everywhere. But someday …. Someday … I see using the auger as a great resource. Can’t wait to see your bulb show in the spring. Have fun. And thanks as always for the great tips. Love your garden!
I love using the auger for planting! 😊
For those with tough soil a drill with a handle is even better and saves you from breaking your wrist!
TOO FUNNY!!! ROLLING WITH LAUGHTER! OK you've convinced me. 😂
Oh my Garden Goddess, you made me laugh with your tulip digging dance. So awesome! Thanks for being so great. Love your garden, love your videos and love you. I just planted 200 alliums myself...using my auger. Life changing.
"Smarter not harder" I see has caught in. Catchy if I may say so myself. 😏
Love Power Planter, love your channel. Thanks for the discount, was going to order one this week.
I live in zone 3b where big bulbs like daffodils and tulips need to be planted 8” deep. The soil here is heavy clay with lots of rocks. I find an auger like this will only drill down 3-4”. I use a rotary hammer instead. It makes digger in hard soils so much easier.
Good morning, Erin☕️. That Power Planter is a back saver for sure! Have a Blessed Day 😊☘️
I received one of these augers for Christmas so I’m looking forward to using it soon! Great video ☺️
Love my power planter augers and they are a great company too!
The demo was so fun-cute idea!
Power Planter augers for the win! 👍🏻👏🏻💪🏼
Thanks. I’ve been looking to upgrade my drill because it it wasn’t powerful enough so I got the kit.
So glad you posted this video. I’ve been planning to get an auger attachment for my fall bulb planting but didn’t know about the quality of what I was able to find at the big box stores near me. Ordered my power planter just now and am so excited to start using it!
This was very funny 🤣🌷
Am I the only one that is shocked amazed and JEALOUS every time a you tube gardener talks about planting hundreds of anything!!!! The money YIKES
Thank you for this video. I just ordered and your code still works :)
Love it!
I don’t usually plant bulbs because the few I’ve planted over the years never came up … either stolen by squirrels, rotted through the winter or could be I just planted them wrong. This year I decided to try again and was patting myself on the back but now I’m ashamed and embarrassed to say my measly 18 bulbs don’t even begin to make a dent!! Guess I better order a few more!! 🙈 🤣🤣
Best tool in the garden.
Thanks for reminding me to get my bulbs
Can't wait to see all you flowers next spring. I have a few hundred daffs to plant from some I have divided. My Colorblends catalog just arrived. I hope they aren't sold out of the tulips I want.
I love mine.
I am going to get me one of those!!
Ha love it Erin. Too fun!! I’m coming down to borrow your power planter lol. Just kidding…. I have one too 😉
Great tip! 🌝
"Smarter not harder" You said it!
I wanted to say 'Power Planter Erin' go help the other Erin!
These garden augers work great but one needs to exercise caution, if using, by knowing your soil type and determining whether roots and stone are present and then matching (controlling) the drills revolutions per minute (RPM’s) to it. These augers can kickback hard if contact is made with an obstacle, so much so that serious wrist injury can occur…..otherwise they work 👍
My son in law, a contractor, has never used one of these in his life, but when I told him about it, he also repeated what you said here in terms of the potential for injury if you hit a rock, etc..
Super!!!!
Sweet! Thanks so much!!✝️🇱🇷❣️
U should have done a comparison with trench planting- dig a large trench woth a shovel and mass plant and re-cover the bulbs. IMO that is the fastest method over individual hole digging
But that wouldn't be funny!
I didn’t have luck with the auger in my clay soil 🤦🏻♀️
I have 200 bulbs to plant next month. I’m definitely investing in an auger!
Me too! I have 300 (looking for more 😂) yesterday I saw Lowe's brought them very affordable! The cheapest was $13 (small) I checked Amazon and the same one retails for $25. I didn't get because I wasn't sure if it would fit my drill. But def going back!
Two tips - 1. make sure you know how to set the clutch on the drill so that a random tree root won't break your arm. 2. If you have a bad back, like me, I use a smaller auger and sit down and make the holes rather than standing up and bending over.
This is my concern. Are there clear instructions on how to set the clutch? I’m considering purchasing the kit but I worry about tree roots.
Sheessh and here I was thinking I could pay my son and his buddies to plant my bulbs lol.
use a corded drill twice the power and never run out of power unless you are planting over 200 ft from your house it's the way to go...!!!
We tried the auger but our heavy clay soil is rough on a drill motor and it throws big chunks everywhere that are almost impossible to gather and backfill in the hole. This year I’m trying a ProPlugger. I’ve already used it a few times and really like it because it stores about 6 plugs in the hollow structure, meaning I can just pop them back into each spot after planting. But I have a question: in zone 6 I thought we were supposed to start planting in October, because it’s still pretty warm here, but I just got my first shipment of bulbs. Am I ok to plant? Is there more of a temperature than a date I need to look for? Thanks Erin!
I am in zone 6 also and I am wait goes to plant till it’s colder!!
I hit clay also about 4 inches down and found watering the area 1-2 days before helps tremendously
You are too fun...but thanks for demo. I so want the smarter way to garden. Too much work the old way. Love all the advice. Wine and weeds is another smarter way I HAD about weeds give me my wine after a day of gardening ...plus a fire in my fire pit. You must be so much fun as a friend I almost wished I was your neighbor bit way too cold in winter. Iowa is bad enough. Love Michigan only in the summer ...I was a mother's helper in 1966 and 1967 in New Buffalo, Michigan...beach 39 and 40. Way too much fun. AKA mother's helper was a term of babysitting .
I have to me one of those!
At 1:57 she has one hand on the drill trigger and the other on the sharp screw of the augur. I would not advise people to do that unless you don't need fingers in the future.
What size auger are you using Erin?
Same question. Please advise which length auger you are using?
It’s in the description, click on the link😃
It’s the length that I’m curious about
Yes, same. I'd love to know what length auger you are using Erin!
So I have the auger and I used it for my dahlias which is a pain in the butt here in my rocky clay soil, it works but it’s tricky the soil can’t be wet ugh. I’m thinking about trenching for my tulip bulbs this year and would love to know your tools/technique for that IF you do trench planting.
I bought an auger last year to plant 700 bulbs, but it’s short length (meaning I’m kneeling while I use). I see the link in description but choices are 24-48” long. What length are you using? (Remind me of your height, so I can’t figure out the length I’ll need to do the work while I’m standing)
She said in the description she is using the 3 in., 24 inches in length. I also was wondering if a longer one would be easier on the back....
I planted 110 last year. Not all of them came up. I drilled a big hole a planted 2-3 next to each other. They’re in the woods so the don’t get maximum sun and only daffs because of the deer. I ordered 100+ this year. I hate planting them, it’s a giant pain. I’m hoping they naturalize and I get a daff carpet some day. Do you believe in fertilizing them?
Ah… bulb math- you are correct! It really doesn’t add up lol
Hi Erin, when you click on link there are 3 options for length & tip. What size is yours? Great video! I always question my sanity when I go to plant bulbs - hoping this tool helps!
Anna Erin gives the details in the description for the video - she is using 3” wide 24” long auger
@@susankilpatrick2918 There are 3 options for drive and tip, though, and I don't think she mentioned which one she has... I sent her a question and hope she answers, since I'd love to get one ASAP!!
Auger = flip flops My fav gardening foot wear
Is there a smaller augur for minor/speciality bulb? Would be for planting “tommy” crocuses in the lawn.
Per their web site they have a 2” x 7” that may work for you. Check out their web site, and also read thru these questions. It looks like Power Planter directly answered some of the questions and it was very helpful.
I planted 100 daffodils last year and I thought I planted a lot. NO! This year I will be planting 500 I need to invest in the new tool. 🌸☀️🐝
What drill and settings are you using? I have the same auger and my 20v DeWalt started to burn out the motor after 20 holes.
👍👍
In your zone, do you plant bulbs in pots? If so how do you over winter them?
Is it hard to evaluate the right depth with the auger?
500th like 😁
Which length auger do you have? I think I am the same height as you (5'2"). I ended up ordering the 3" x 30" so I could stand straight(ish) up to do the holes. Thanks for the demonstration! It was very helpful. Oh, yes, I also ordered 800 bulbs! That auger better be good!🤣❤❤❤ P.S. Thanks so much for the promo code!❤❤❤
Cat Pem Do you recommend the auger length (3" x 30") you purchased? I am 5'3 and I have 600 cloves of garlic to plant and want stand straight while drilling the holes. Curious to know how you found that particular length of auger in comparison to the 24" auger used on this video.
I have a hand bulb-er planter and it works amazingly! I would never use that long thing... and I would not use an auger for bulbs, that way overkill IMO. You can get the hand digger thing at Walmart for $3 bucks ☺️
What size auger for the daffodils?
Anyone know where. you can purchase 2 inch plugs online or in NC? Thanks!!!
The animals get some of them .
What size is your auger Erin? I’m eager to get one :) ! I too love the flowers and really dislike digging holes-
She has it linked in the description
@@sheilastromberger2275 I don’t see the length when I click. Looks like it could be 24”?
@@canels100 Ah, yes, I see what you mean...I bet you’re right on the 24” as it looks like it’s hitting her mid-hip.
I didn't find them particularly helpful in my clay soil. I had such high hopes too.
I didn't see you dealing with rocks. My soil has a layer of rocks six inches deep averaging about one to four inches in size. I've heard that augers only work in rockless soils. Is that true?
I have so many rocks also. From one inch to boulders. I literally can’t plant a 4” annual without removing at least six rocks. I am afraid that the auger would hit a rock and torque the drill right out of my hand or pull my arm as it torqued. Anyone have any experience with rocky soil?
@@karenlevy802 Me too. Putting in a T post on our place requires a pickaxe after about 5 inches deep and I end up making at least a one foot wide hole deep enough to pass the band of rocks, which varies from 6 inches to 12 inches in depth. It is grueling work. If I thought an auger would work, I would get one .
Augers are nice but can be dangerous. I always worry about destroying something I can’t see and won’t feel with the auger.
Hi Erin. My soil contains a lot of stones. If I use the auger, how likely is it that it will pull up those pesky rocks and launch them at my face?! Serious question, no joke.
I also have a lot of rocks - mostly rocks. I use a short auger and found that you need to turn it off before you pull it out of the hole. Otherwise, yes it will spray soil and rocks everywhere. It's always a good idea to wear eye protection when doing something like this. With a longer shaft, like Erin's, maybe not so much.
@@karinchristensen220 That's good to know. Thank you very much. Happy gardening!
😅😅 You got some excercise with the old method.

Great video. However, all I could think of is “Is she barefoot??” and “Watch out for poison ivy!” as I have just come in from killing some. Seriously it looks like you are barefoot! 😂.
Sandals.
I always think that when I watch Erin garden. She must not have the poison ivy, catbrier and the critters we have. I'm in blue jeans and boots working in my garden.
@@bethheerten1132 You're right. Sandals and augers in a garden, it's a bit tricky...any time you're using power tools i.e. auger with a drill, I would be adding boots and safety glasses as well.
Interesting information but drawn out way too long
