A penny on the grave means you just visited. A quarter on the grave means you were with the soldier when he or she died.
There are also traditions for a nickel and a dime. A nickel means you went to bootcamp together and a dime means you served together.
@@randall1959 that is absolutely correct
@@demondbrown206 I think some people just do it out of respect without knowing the tradition behind it. Bonnie and Clyde's graves are always covered in coins.
@@randall1959 agreed
This is true but he supposedly died by suicide home alone. So if that's the case why leave the quarter? Unless he didn't really die by suicide and the real murderer left it. Maybe it has a different meaning....
Please be careful out there brother. I really enjoy the historic story telling. Your voice is perfect for this.
I have a feeling that if anyone tries messing with him they are the ones who will have to be careful
Love the vids
Oh he's good! I know exactly where he's at. He is at an dead end of Dragan Street, downtown Florence.
He really do have the voice for what he do.
Another interesting fact: Guy Bannister, one of Hoover's original hires for the FBI, not only ran the FBI Chicago office, but was a good friend of Lee Harvey Oswald's in New Orleans and Dallas, TX. Bannister was one of the agents present when Dillinger got shot.
One of the reasons Dillinger went to the movies that night, where he got killed, was because the theatre had air conditioning, a new thing at the time, and that Chicago summer night was hot as blazes.
Fact... Oswald was a Marxist communist that once become a citizen of the Soviet Union.
Thank you for that information
@@davidcross701 thank you for that information
I love the fact that you feed the birds while you’re out visiting cemeteries! It must add a bit of cheerfulness to a cheerless location. How honourable!
Thank you Lamont you are such a nice guy helping out the animals..God bless you 🙏
Yeah but how would you feel if you went to visit the grave of a loved one and a very close one at that and found something sitting on the tombstone that didn’t belong? like a tuna fish can filled with bird seeds, I bet you’d move it. I damn shole would.
@@pamelaclary3801 I don't think this grave gets many visitors caring what anyone leaves behind as long as it's not hurting anyone or anything. He ain't visiting your loved one so no worries.
@@MsTati67 Lol
@@pamelaclary3801 just say you hate animals bro it’s not that hard
Lamont you have a lot of interesting stories, keep up the good work & stay safe.
Thank you, Lemont, for caring for the wildlife.
Good morning my brother may God continue to bless you and keep his loving arms wrap around you and thank you for what you do showing love from Norwood Louisiana 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾✌🏾✌🏾✌🏾✌🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾God bless ❤🤍💙
Good to hear from you again Lamont at Large, you are doing a great job, SHAWNA FROM JAMAICA 🙏ONE LOVE🇯🇲
One Love, friend 🇺🇸
Interesting as always. Thank you Lamont for sharing their stories.
Hey 👋🏽 Lamont! Have a great day sir, drive safe
Interesting story lamont.
Love the tuna can bird seed holder.
Caring for more than others.
Have a good day Lamont.
Hi Lamont, beautiful well looked after Cemetery, RIP Mr Purvis , well done to you. 💐💐💐thanks Lamont. All the best bud. Xxx
A nickel means you were in training with them and a dime means you served with him in the same company
Thank you for that information
He is my ancestor and I enjoy listening to his history being told and what I have been told about him.
That is cool. Sorry for you and your family's loss of him.
@@latashaalston4350 thank you and yes it is very cool to know he was in my family.
My condolences. We’re you told it was suicide? There are a lot of conspiracy theorists making comments with no evidence.
@@ZabDevin i was only told he was shot, i cant confirm if it was accidental or a suicide. There is still a lot of information i am researching on my family history. Id love to meet with his son and cross reference our family history. But he may just want leave it be, idk. Sorry i can not resolve the conspiracy theories on him i only know what i was told and still researching all the Purvis family history.
I am a Purvis as well. Distant relative to my father.
Yeah I looked it up. That one grave, Christopher Purvis the Vietnam vet is his son. Wow died really young, 34 yrs old. I wondered what happened. In fact Melvin Purvis had 3 sons. His oldest son Melvin III died fairly young too at 46. His other son Philip is still alive
I wondered about Christopher too. That is so young.
I'm 34 so he was my age when he died.
That is so sad. Thank you for that information.
If in fact he was loving the attention, I don't see a suicide or accidentally shooting himself on top of stairs. Very strange place for this to happen.
He didnt. Its just more of the corruption from the FBI since day one
Thanks for telling another interesting life story. This man certainly had adventure in his life. So kind of you to feed the birds. 👍
The meaning of coins on a Headstone,,,, A Penny ---- You stopped and paid your respects, A Nickel ---- You attended boot camp with them, A Dime --- You served in the armed forces with them, A Quarter ---- You were with the soldier when they were killed in action.
A very interesting piece of history. Thank you and be safe.
Thanks lamont for another interesting story take care my friend much love from England 🇬🇧❤ 🇬🇧
I just realized you have another channel. I love it. Anyway I have an expression for the little mean men “Short Man Syndrome.” Putin falls in that category. Best wishes from an old lady. 👵🏻😂🥴
Napoleon Complex
My mom always said small men behave like Bantam Roosters. (little bitty chickens who believe they can take on the world!)
Your videos are professional and fascinating. Keep them coming sir.
Great content Lamont, Thank you!
Thanks for this story. Florence is a beautiful city.
He may have been worse than some of the gangsters. Appreciate your graveyard tours and thanks for feeding the birds.
Yes it is Lamont in my hometown
Pervis assisted with compiling evidence against Nazi leaders in the Nuremberg trials.
Yay! He’s in our hometown💜

What about Eliot Ness?
The change is " change for the road". (Or as some say coins for the ferryman) I leave change at the grave sites as well. It's bad juju to take it!! Luv ur videos!! That's awesome u leave bird seed!! Great idea!! Be safe!!
Yes, I have heard some interesting things about J. Edgar Hoover, as well.
Good Morning Lamont, I'm still binge watching. Great contents.
Love your video's Lamont. Thank you for taking care of all the animals and fixing broken graves. Your very kind.
Hey there, Lamont. Hope you doing well out there 🙂
Hello Lamont! Thanks for sharing this great and interesting video.
Never heard of this man or story. Thanks Lamont
He assisted with compiling evidence against Nazi leaders in the Nuremberg trials.
Thanks for this interesting story! I have my doubts that this man committed suicide, I could see him having powerful enemies especially from his FBI years. What an era that was !
Same, at the top of the stairs of all places? Doesn't sound right for a suicide . Just sayin
THANKS LAMONT FOR SHARING!
That's some heavy history. Wow 🤯
I am no fancy of Hoover. Based on what you said about his careers I believe he was an honorable man. It’s tragic we will never know for sure. I think Hoover blackballed him .
Love your videos Lamont. Stay safe
RIP Melvin Horace Purvis II (October 24, 1903 - February 29, 1960) (aged 56) you will truly be missed and my prayers go out to you and your family.
@Dildo shwaggins 12yr old alert
Thanks Lamont for this video I'm a big mob fanatic if u can you should do more video like this one.👊💯
Lamont a a penny means respect a a nickel means Thay were in the same unit a dime means same squad and a quarter means Thay were there when the soldier died hope this helps. Stay safe out there.
Thank you for that information
Sometimes people also leave a quarter if they are family
Yeah,I heard of him but didn't know this stuff about him! Thanx!
A coin left on a headstone or at the grave site is meant as a message to the deceased soldier’s family that someone else has visited the grave to pay respect.
Leaving a penny at the grave means simply that you visited.
Leaving a nickel indicates that you and the deceased trained at boot camp together.
Leaving a dime means you served together in some capacity.
Leaving a quarter at the grave, you are telling the family that you were with the soldier when they were killed.
Then would that mean someone was with him when he "committed suicide"?
@@debbymccormack6525 Maybe or murderer, relative of the murderer. No way to know. 😁
@Angelina or someone just left a quarter not knowing the significance of it. That's more likely I think.
@@debbymccormack6525 Probably.
My first thought was no, he didn't kill himself. When describing him in this story he didn't sound like a man that would do that, especially at the top of his stairs! Nope
You do realize that many people commit suicide who are intelligent, wealthy, accomplished, successful, etc? There is no profile of people who commit suicide. You never know what’s going on in someone’s head.
I've always been interested in gangster stuff
Randy Garcia, love the channel, as I feel I'm right there walking next you taking in the history. - Again I do not watch TV much but enjoy your videos, living in Yokohama, Japan - Retired Veteran - thanks so much again.
Thank you for your service. 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
I found out that the penny means someone paid there respect and the quarter means that they where with that person when they passed
Just found your new page today pretty cool, thank you for your respectful way of bringing those lives gone to the present tense.
Love this channel. Your research into each person and your narrative makes it very interesting. Brings historical info to life. Thanks Lamont. I enjoy Lamont at large also. Spent a few years at cemeteries in New York State and Pennsylvania looking up my dad’s maternal and paternal genealogy. Cemeteries are fascinating and we can learn so much history there. 🥰👍🏻✌️🙏
I find it hard to believe that someone with his intelligence would want to kill himself in that way. Mr Nice guy not so nice someone had high up enemies . Crazy times back then .
So now people who commit suicide aren’t intelligent? Do you realize how ridiculous that sounds? Do you realize how many intelligent, rich, and successful people have committed suicide? Look it up.
Just listened to your radio interview. It was and you were FANTASTIC 😃
It's kinda surreal watching this video knowing what is about to take place when you get to Florida. Know what I mean? I'm just so happy for you 🤗
Btw.... This was an interesting video. I haven't heard this guy's name before, I'm thinking 🤔 Thanks
I actually never heard of Melvin Purvis. That’s why I watch your channel, learn something every time.
Thank God you have a wonderful voice to narrate your stories
Thank you Lamont! love from the UK x
Love this video!!!!💗💜💚💛❤
Love Fascinating Graveyards and you!
"G" Men in the 1930's had hardened criminal personality's, giving them an edge on how criminals are caught. Lots of times the Gmen would torture or use cruel tactics to extract information.
I seem to remember, at one time to be an FBI agent, you had to have a degree in either law or accounting.
very true
Hey brother. Love your videos and watch them everyday! I just want to mention one thing. My mother as a young boy told me and brother and sisters. Not to walk on the graves because that’s disrespectful . Atleast not on the plot.
I volunteer and mow a very old cemetery and impossible to mow or trim without stepping on the graves. And I have no disrespect to any of the plots. Out of respect I mow and maintain for free or it wouldn't be kept up at all.
As Long You Respect The Dead,& Its Not Intentionally !! Your Allgood From The Spirit World....
I try not to step on them. I feel so bad. 😕
Very cool story. I grew up
In Florence and remember passing his beautiful home almost daily. Great job. You have to pronounce his name Pervis ( southern ) though. Lol.
Great video thanks for the story and history!
1:55 Back then almost all FBI agents were either Lawyers or Accounts (CPA) by training.
Very clean and tidy there, grass cut. Very peaceful. Thankyou.
Hello my name is tj Bailey I love looking through old gaves stie it's so cool wonderful videos thank you for sharing
Good afternoon watching from Guyana Lamont always doing a magnificent job love watching your work blessings
A Quarter jeans they served with him in the military, and a Penny means they didn't know him personally, but it's respect to him.
Awesome research as Always ✊♥️👏.. Such A interesting video tonight 👍Safe Journeys To You Always ✌🏻☕️
Didn't know anything about that man!! I do now thanks!! I think I'm gonna look him up and check him out , good one brother
wouldnt leaving bird seed on headstones cause the birds to defecate all over the stone and make a mess of it?
I find it disrespectful
i really do want two thank you Lamont for this video i really do always look forward two seeing your videos
Wow never heard of him. When I saw the title I was thinking this was about Eliot Ness. Purvis definitely sounds like a badass law man you didn't want to mess with and was tougher than Leroy Brown. I can see why old J. Edgar was jealous of him. I wouldn't be surprised if he had Purvis taken out.
Another thing I have learned from Lamont. Never heard of this guy! Very very interesting!!!
Love these type of videos.
THANKS LAMONT 💕💕💕💕💕
Hi Lamont!! You in my hometown!! Go Wilson Tigers 🐅!! Won the State Championship 💛💜!!
Like 👍the mafia grave sites, great work Lamont
Man So Awesome Lamont Among The Best Video Yet
Outstanding ! I would have thought e
Elliott Ness would have been the most famous!
Usually you go off into a room or maybe out in the woods to kill themselves people don't do it at the top of the staircase
My thoughts exactly!
Give me a break! People commit suicide in various ways and in various places. 🙄
Awesome video! Pretty Boy Floyd is buried in Akins Oklahoma about 30 miles from my house.
I like the way you tell the story it's cool brother
Thank you for sharing. RIP🪦🕊
hey lamont! thanks for doing a segment on Melvin pervis!!! Rip!! wow love these stories!! ✌out!!
I put that quarter on Mr. Purvis's grave on 12-25-2021, the reason is called (Paying your respect to the deceased). My grandfather grew up with Mr. Purvis in Timmonsville, SC. and were good friends for life. Mr. Purvis father's family plot is located in Byrd Cemetery in Timmonsville, SC. I was in law-enforcement for 25 years and Mr. Purvis was one of my mentors!
👍 great story Lamont. take care 🤛
Great story Lamont but I like it better when you stick to the facts not hearsay.🇺🇸👮🏻♂️
God bless you, Lamont, in Jesus' name 😊
Ty Lamont for this story...
I can not believe it!! I live in Darlington which is next to Florence AND we are distant relatives of Melvin Purvis. It’s my Mothers maiden name actually so not too distance. I don’t know anything more about the man though. The only thing better than this is if I could have ran into you myself bc I have too many family members out there to count. Safe travels my friend. PS it’s pronounced “per” vis Thanks for the great videos
I would love to know more about you, we maybe kin as well. He was a distant relative of mine as well. I would love to find more information about him and my ancestors if possible!
@@kaceypurvis1043hey how cool. I’m so jealous of my cousins w the same lastname. So sorry I didn’t see this sooner. I sure hope you get this. Let’s see. My mother’s Mom (so my grandmother) died young in a car accident at 36yo. Her name was Nancy Naomi Purvis. Her oldest daughter is Peggy Purvis (my mom)… She had 2 sisters Hazel and Gracie and a brother Wesley Purvis. He had 4 kids who I’m really close to they took care of me when my parents were working so they’re like siblings to me really. Their names are Gary Claudette Paulette and Thomas Purvis. Does any of those names ring a bell? I’ll check back to see if you get this 🤞 Happy New Year

I love that you leave birdseed after your visit. Please be safe out there.
Hello Lamont I have done a thumbs up.
Great video. Thnx. Greetz from The Netherlands.
Another great video, Lamont.
But, Melvin Purvis as the second most famous FBI agent of all time? Maybe second of the gangster era of the 20s and 30s, but second of all time?
IMHO, that title belongs to John “Mindhunter” Douglas.
