I personally think from everything I’ve seen these engines would do far better with a 30 weight oil. 0w-20 is just too thin for a twin turbo engine and the duty cycle for the weight that little engine has to propel. The 20 weight oil is for fuel economy only. A prime example of this is the 1st and 2nd gen ford coyote V8. They used 5W-20 and had quite a few issues with spun main bearings, then for the 21 model year all of a sudden they switched to 5W-30. All the Tundra engines in these new trucks that have gone bad are lack of lubrication. That all tells me they need a heavier weight oil.

9:53 EVERY tech is just going to add 8 quarts. 9 oz “overfill” probably won’t even be over the top hash mark on the dipstick.

I just bought a 24 tundra limited with trd off road. I just did my 1st oil change at 4500 miles. I agree with you. I plan on doing it every 5k miles. I wasnt aware that in new car its suggested to change it before the 1k mile mark. If i would have know. I would have it done right away. Oh well better than the 10k mile mark toyota suggested.

5k is perfect... I use pennzoil ultra platinum 0w20. Just changed today... I hit 15k. I did change at 1k to drop the break-in filings out. Also, I put oil on both sides of the rubber oil gasket... some folks forget that filter is metal too.

Use silicone lube on gaskets, not petrol oil. Petroleum wears rubber.

For as well as Toyota is at engineering, I wish they would just invest a few more minutes and put the dipstick at the front of the engine. My winter beater Corolla, the dipstick is right up front! Its so NICE!!

Also wanted to add, no problem at all using 0-w20 oil. Lab tests have shown it to have great lubricating properties and no issues holding up to long OCI's. Also much better flow in colder months. The old school though of 'thicker oil protect better' is caveman mentality. Prius has been running 0w20 for years and millions of miles, engine failures are extremely rare even upwards of 500k miles. Run it!

Also, Toyotas 10k mile interval is for mostly highway driving with minimal stop and go. For people who do any towing, city driving that consists of constant stop and go, or hauling gear in the bed of the truck, they recommend 5k interval changes.

Given the issues with main bearing problems on Non Hybrid Tundras, I'm changing my oil every 2500 miles. It may be overkill but it is cheap insurance.

10k OCI is no problem at all with the right filter and obviously, any quality synthetic oil. I run my intervals at 7500miles. I've seen oil analysis after 5k, 7.5k, and 10k. The oil is completely fine after 10k. 3-5k is way too short, I like the 7.5k interval. Good video, really nice truck. Thanks!

I don't get the reasoning to heat up your oil before draining it. Your oil had all night to drain into the oil pan and by starting it back up to heat up the oil.. you just making sure that you won't fully drain all of the old oil out because you had just recirculate the oil back throughout the motor by starting it up and now a bunch of the old oil is trap in the passages and crevasses of the motor instead of sitting in the oil pan.

Its not about the oil handling the longer interval its about the engine handling it. I would never push any turbocharged engine to 10 k the most id ever go between oil changes on a turbocharged engine is 5k.
