In my first campaign as a player I played a Barbarian with the Ritual Caster feat. He had a pet familiar and the joke was that he had a small spell book and believed himself to be a wizard, but really it was the Cat familiar that was the brains of the operation casting his spells for him. My Barbarians Cat (named speckle) was extremely relevant to the plot. I had two rats we found in the first sewer dungeon that were really consistently useful in scouting and searching rooms and the like. There was also a bit where these street kids picked the party's pockets but got caught after a rat bit them. Felt pretty cool. I never got to use it before the game ended but I also had a potion of dragon's breath on hand. Making rat flamethrowers would've been useful eventually, I think.
Up until now, I thought all familiars were random animals/magical creatures that you could just find in the wilderness, not spirits from other planes that could change form. Also, after watching this video, the idea of playing as my friend's familiar instead of making my own character because it's my first time playing and I want something simple to play/roleplay with doesn't seem that ridiculous anymore... :)

They would help perform tasks of black magic for the witch in exchange for suckling blood from them from a teat known a witch mark, which is believed to be in the form of a birthmark or wart that won't feel pain. Witch-hunters would torture victims accused of witchcraft with stabbing them with a sharp pin looking for said witch mark."

Your Familiar focused wizard reminds me so much of the Pathfinder 1st.ed. Summoner-class. They would get an Eidolon, that grew and gained abilities when you gained levels. Never got around to playing one, but once ran a mission where an Eidolon asked the party to help and rescue their summoner.
This! I recently played a Pathfinder Summoner - that was then stealth-modded to be a Wizard but keeping some of the Summoner stuff (our game is very home-brew-y) and it was SUCH a blast! And yes I did the tiny snek into big eastern style dragon because dragons are cool.
So cool they kept that class for pf2e. The customisabiliy of te Eidolon was so much fun. Honestly felt like what animal companions were supposed to be. I believe the NPC I ran had a large Griffin-style Eidolon, but they had the front of an owl, instead of an eagle. In hindsight, very inspired by Won Shi Tong, from the Avatar Spirit Library episode. More than all, it just really encourages players to make their companion a character.
We have a summoner in our 2e campaign. Big no-nonsense half-demon kitsune accompanied by a cheerful pixie trying to pull the two of them into the monk's heist scheme so the pixie can keep feeding her cinnamon addiction.
When I first started DND, I made a teifling cleric/warlock multi class who was once a pirate who survived a shipwreck. My DM, most likely as an inside joke, eventually allowed me to purchase a pet, where I chose the red weasel. I named him Scrabble. You should have seen my face when I watched critical role for the first time. The coincidences were way too on point. I was just a fjord/jester hybrid, which is awfully fitting for them ending up together
Its cant be understated how amazing it is that despite having your own product, you preserve your integrity and stay loyal to your audience, still publishing your stuff for free. I do not usually buy merch, but you have proven insane quality in your twists/ideas. They are so fun. And to know that you created a book, rich with your quality content, with 100 pages of YOUR OWN MADE illustrations (They look amazing btw.) is just stunning. On top of you knowing what your audience wants: "beautiful on the shelf" By god you got me sold. ❤
Your channel is such a blessing, dude, it always lights up my day when i see a new video pop up on my recomended even if i usually can't watch them right away. Great too see you thriving and making even more cool stuff, hope everything has been going well!
Not a familiar, but one time I had a a cat named mouse in my dnd campaign. My dm killed out of nowhere but after some polite and civilised negotiations he brought her back to life. Only half of her, though, so now we have one half that moves and walks like normal and a dead, lifeless back half we carry around in our bags. I love Mouse.
This is above and beyond. I was thinking this video could be the best d&d material ever, and now there's a book! Absolutly do NOT shut up, and take my money
That's why I love this channel: even tho it's going in the book, Antonio put the stat block for free for us. I really appreciate that, keeping in mind that even if I know English, my players don't, so I have to translate the Twists for them. I usually buy DnD books if they're in Portuguese, but I'll probably make an exception for that one once I can save some cash because I can see how much care he put into making this
No way the youtube algorithm didn’t recommend me this video -2 minutes before it was uploaded, despite the fact I was not subscribed until two minutes ago!
The freakishly good timing of this video my goodness. I was just working on familiars and stuff for character lore, and then this video drops. Perfect timing, amazing video as always ✨
Your concept reminds me of an anime called Zatch Bell. They are these powerful puppet like creatures whose spells could only used in our world with the helpful a chosen caster.
I just wanted to say thanks for making all these videos and especially thank you for having good free contact. It's really helps the part of the d&d community that doesn't have the most amount of money to spend on this hobby.
You are such a great soul! Thank you for all you have contributed! I'm also happy that you're releasing more as my partner and I fight over the shirts we got at GenCon! Can't wait to get more!
I have two characters (so far) that use familiars. One is a Drake Warden that has (gasp) a tiny Dragon, pretty standard stuff honestly. The other (and the one I'm more excited about) is a Shadowmancer that casts through their Shadow. As in, their shadow is a Shadow that can act somewhat freely and manipulate the world near him (think similar to Dr. Facilier).
I never went to a store so fast! I've been a fan since your 2nd video and have been on the Pointy Hat train since. Thank you for all of the awesome stuff you do for the DND community ❤
I am so happy for you, congrats on your collection! I appreciate all the hard work you do, for your videos, your content, your book, all of it. you are amazing.
This has been one of my favorite videos on this channel so far, and I've been here for some time. Keep it up! I also love the Codex's idea, delivery to South America is always tricky, but I hope to be able to get my hands on them.
A game I payed a LONG time ago (like, the late 90s) had a perk for a wizard that took a familiar, ripped it's soul out and replaced it with a demon, making it kind of grossly powerful for a familiar. Dude had a ferret demon familiar that he referred to as the fuzzy missile in combat, all teeth, claws and spiky fur. It was a silly game, but that familiar was a delightful lil ass, and we all side-eyed the wizard. Good times. Heh
I'd just like to share that back in second edition, there was a dragon-only spell called "Find Humanoid Familiar" that allowed a dragon to summon/enchant a person (usually a "monstrous" one such as an orc) to become their familiar, with the same benefits as the normal spell.
Bruh not me fangirling and my cat looking so confused. I have LOVED this channel ever since the beginning! I have used multiple of the stuff for my campaigns! The second I get paid I am getting everything. I'll take your entire stock, Sir!!!!
As someone that doesn not use reddit this is the one channel that I believe could really use a sub-reddit or a space where people could upload their thoughts on the material that is provided here and could really act as an inspiration for the whole "DnD with a twist" vibe. Also since you are delving into merchandise that would be a nice way to keep in track how people are enjoying them and adjust (if necessary -and if you so choose-) accordingly
There is one I think! It's not official (as in, i don't run it and i don't check it) but you can discuss anything there! There's also a pretty popular tv tropes page
I haven't bought a D&D book in years. I've dealt with the stuff that's available online, and stuff other people is shared with me. that being said as soon as I finish your video, I open the link and I'm deciding how much I'm going to spend in your store. You've been an amazing addition to the D&D community, in fact my first time as DM was running the adventure you released during Kraken week (which three separate groups of players have absolutely loved) and I'm happy to support you and all that you do.
The amount of material and the outrageous quality that Pointy summons from the thin air in every video is insane! This hat is too good for YT, there is no other in his league, yet generous in sharing his wisdom and creativity with us. God bless this powerful mind! ( But I have to admit that I watch the videos at 0.75 speed cause this adorable little hat speaks very quickly, and every word needs to be carefully digested if you wanna to absorve all the wisdom hidden behind wach thought.)
Thank you for this content ! I have found a few other stuffs for familiar lovers. The Valda's spire of secret offers a subclass for sorcerer based on the use of a familiar : the spiritborn. The Heliana's guide and the Ryoko's guide (DnD short worked on these compendium) offer a class based on familiars (the tamer) and a bunch of new familiars with upgrading.
AAA am so glad pointy wrote it out so much better than what I've had in my head quq I've always wanted familiars / pets be more interactive and actually be more involved in games. Thank you thank youu ♥
The Unfamiliar is such a freaking cool concept that gives me exactly what I've been looking for for my campaign (evidence of corruption in a wizard society besides the usual lich stuff). I was about to be disappointed that it was in the book ONLY because I want to dig into the concept right away and didn't want to wait, but you went ahead and still gave it to us for free! I'm definitely getting the book anyway, but being able to read this part early is very much appreciated.
This actually hits on a lot of stuff I've been thinking about lately. Your art and the new book look amazing. Thanks for always doing such a great job!
Dear Pointy Hat, I would love to buy your book! ❤ Huge fan of the channel and want to support you. Unfortunately, when I wanted to order, the shipping rate to my country in Europe turned out to be twice as expensive as the book itself, excluding taxes and also possible import costs (which are another 40 euros) 😢 Will it be possible in the future to ship from Europe and/or have a European webshop? Thank you kindly in advance! P.s. Monday I am going to let my players buy pets so your timing couldn't be more perfect!
I would have bought the codex... if it wasn't for those horrendous shipping fees. 50$ to ship in Europe. Even you Pointy who lives there would have to pay those 80$ to get your own book. No way I'd pay 167% more just for shipping. I've paid less to send several heavier books from Japan.
Beside your admirable work, I so enjoy your cheery attitude you manage to transport in every single one of your videos. You can cheer me up on (almost) my saddest day. Thank you! ♥
Ok, I really want to play a character who goes on an adventure to keep an affected familiar from becoming an unfamiliar and tries to find a way to control or cure the progression of it. I swear every time you upload a video! EVERY TIME!
Absolutely an instant buy for that codex and the sweatshirt. You inspired me to make my channel so definitely gonna show off your merch when I get it! Congrats!
Reminds me of some old D&D novels. There was a Dragonlance about a wizard trying to solve the mystery of this plague that turned everyone to stone and gave the victims snake hair that yelled out the main character’s name when they died. He had a snarky seagull as his familiar. It was sad when he took a shot meant for the wizard and even worse when the resulting magical backlash came right in the middle of the fight with the villain. The other story was connected to a book called King Pinch and followed a sorceress trying to summon a familiar while using unorthodox ingredients like cheap booze. She winds up with a halfling who takes advantage of her drunkenness and her unfamiliarity with the spell to get some free food and lodging. When the spell finally does work and summons another halfling, she’s both ecstatic and then horrified when she finds out that she more or less kidnapped the poor fellow from the other side of the continent when he was right in the middle of having dinner.
I love how three of the clips he uses in the first like, 20 seconds of the species segment were from "The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe"... And two of them were of Aslan! Dude feels so strongly about having talking animals as a playable rase he got God's fursona to model for him!
You can't just make me almost cry about a good boy's backstory like that. Then you give us the coolest monster ever and a book! I definitely want to get my hands on that book (and a human familiar t-shirt)
I love your passion for this and how well you're doing! Great work on the book, and I love this familiar twist. It's fantastic ❤ I could see so many cool storyline!!
Familiars are great! I had on e character who had sworn a vow of silence communicate important things via her badger and a wizard/artificer who used her familiar to scout, deliver close range spells, or transport her eldritch canon around the battlefield. Having a mini at the table definitely helps people remember they have a familiar when they would be forgotten otherwise (substitute a token/character sheet for online sessions). Really lovely idea, and something that would be the best way to get MY players invested in a quest line.
Built a Pathfinder 1st ed character around a parrot familiar. It started off as a loose collection of mechanical cheese but became so much more. Concept started out as a guidance delivery system. By the end, I had purchased a small plushy parrot and would pass it from player to player around the table to let them know who was getting the bonus for that turn. Fond memories
I love how you always get to the heart of the design and manage to bring out the best aspects of whatever you're revising.i also love the on-point clips you get - do have a special website to find all of them? Can't wait for the future when you combine all your creations into a new game system! 😍
Mate, you're amazing. So happy to see your excitement about what you do. It's a pleasure seeing people putting love into things. Thank you for all this energy that you bring with you every video ❤.
Back in 3.5 edition, there used be a build concept called "The Big Guy Is With Me," because a number of feats, spells, and other options actually made it surprisingly viable to play as if the _familiar_ was the actual player character, while the spellcaster was the moral support in the back. Chiefly was the "Share Spells" ability, which made any self-targeting spell you cast also affect your familiar. This was especially the case for the Psionic classes, with the Psicrystal in place of a familiar, as Psicrystals, by RAW at least (I was never clear on if it was intended) actually got feats from leveling up. Combined with the Egoist specialization, which had the best self-buffing powers available, and you could easily do most of your fighting by throwing your psychic rock at the bad guys and letting it go to town.
THE WIZARD/FAMILIAR SCHOOL IS AMAZING!!! You created a great way to have a Pokémon campaign, complete with power up mechanics like Mega/Dynamax when the familiar gets empowered and switching in different pokémon when you transform them!! 👀 I can’t wait to play a campaign in that world. You’re a genius!
Give it up to the human familiar because he was NOT happy having to do that photoshoot. Hope y'all dig the Arcane Collection!
We love you pointy hat but where in the nine hells is the warlock lich! We want more of Which lich!
A quick question regarding the Arcane Collection: Since I'm from Europe and shipping US-EU is extremely expensive, I'd be very interested if there would be a PDF version available - is this planned in any way, a "maybe", or something that I shouldn't expect? Or could there be something done about shipping to Europe?

_Love_ that you used Sabrina the Teenage Witch clips. Such a great show that's so under-referenced and under-discussed now-a-days.
I was sitting here sick thinking “you know what would help in my sickness? A new Pointy Hat video.”
My prayers were answered!
On top of you knowing what your audience wants: "beautiful on the shelf"
By god you got me sold. ❤
Hey Antonio, I just wanted to say to you that i love your videos. I'm always happy to see a new release. You rock dude, keep doing what you do
I mean he is pretty cool (for a human)
Um, don’t you know? Antonio’s only the familiar. Pointy Hat is the one who makes the videos (by making his familiar do it for him)
Your channel is such a blessing, dude, it always lights up my day when i see a new video pop up on my recomended even if i usually can't watch them right away.
So...does that DM's current state mirror Mouse's after negotiations?
@@Oddmanoutre There was some real-life inspiration behind Mouse’s revival, yes.
This is above and beyond. I was thinking this video could be the best d&d material ever, and now there's a book!
Absolutly do NOT shut up, and take my money
every time a new Pointy Hat video releases, I audibly scream of happiness. that’s not a joke
Personally, I've always been obsessed with the idea of a Familiar (especially a dragon familiar) so naturally I clicked the second I saw this video
That little story melted the ice off my cold dead heart
That's why I love this channel: even tho it's going in the book, Antonio put the stat block for free for us. I really appreciate that, keeping in mind that even if I know English, my players don't, so I have to translate the Twists for them. I usually buy DnD books if they're in Portuguese, but I'll probably make an exception for that one once I can save some cash because I can see how much care he put into making this
No way the youtube algorithm didn’t recommend me this video -2 minutes before it was uploaded, despite the fact I was not subscribed until two minutes ago!
20:46 "We got a plushie!" ...Is Pointy Hat cake? 🎂🤔
Dragonbane actually has a duck species, and much like donald duck, they are usually grumpy and quick to anger.
They also have Wolfkin, and I believe their Bestiary has some additional racial options.
The book looks great, but the shipping *starting* at $50 to the uk is insane
I agree. Amazing book and I love the content in it, but yikes on the uk shipping. Maybe he could put a PDF version up to purchase?
The freakishly good timing of this video my goodness.
I was just working on familiars and stuff for character lore, and then this video drops. Perfect timing, amazing video as always ✨
Your concept reminds me of an anime called Zatch Bell. They are these powerful puppet like creatures whose spells could only used in our world with the helpful a chosen caster.
damn this is cool you may just be the best dnd youtuber on the planet and your human familiar seems alright to
btw have only been watching for like 2weeks and already have almost finished this stuff it’s just so good
I just wanted to say thanks for making all these videos and especially thank you for having good free contact. It's really helps the part of the d&d community that doesn't have the most amount of money to spend on this hobby.
FINALLY A PLUSH!! I was honestly going to make one myself, including being able to sit on your head, but now I can just buy an official one!!😊
You are such a great soul! Thank you for all you have contributed! I'm also happy that you're releasing more as my partner and I fight over the shirts we got at GenCon! Can't wait to get more!
10:44 writethatdownWRITETHATDOWN!!!!!
I literally screamed at that idea
This is the best D&D studio out there. You do it for the love and it's always reflected in the quality of your creations. Thank you.
Facilier).
Evan Kelmp
I never went to a store so fast! I've been a fan since your 2nd video and have been on the Pointy Hat train since. Thank you for all of the awesome stuff you do for the DND community ❤
2:22
You should’ve said: “I’m going to concentrate on familiars for this video because I have…familiarity”
I am so happy for you, congrats on your collection! I appreciate all the hard work you do, for your videos, your content, your book, all of it. you are amazing.
4:25 Basically the Alfiq from The Elder Scrolls, Awakened animals from Pathfinder 2e, or Uplifted Bears and Entu Symbiotes from Starfinder
fine you got me ill learn pathfinder /s
Good times. Heh
I'd just like to share that back in second edition, there was a dragon-only spell called "Find Humanoid Familiar" that allowed a dragon to summon/enchant a person (usually a "monstrous" one such as an orc) to become their familiar, with the same benefits as the normal spell.
dear mr. hat,
thx for the video.
happy thanksgiving,
Bruh not me fangirling and my cat looking so confused.
2:07 that’s a pine marten. That is my familiar. But he hunts for himself. And yeah, the comerants are underrated.
5:30 DC20 pretty much has this exact feature built into its Beastborne ancestry
And it’s how familiars also work in DC20. I’d love to see Pointy Hat’s take on DC20.
It's also how druids wild shape
AAA am so glad pointy wrote it out so much better than what I've had in my head quq I've always wanted familiars / pets be more interactive and actually be more involved in games. Thank you thank youu ♥
Dropped my entire homework load for this
The Unfamiliar is such a freaking cool concept that gives me exactly what I've been looking for for my campaign (evidence of corruption in a wizard society besides the usual lich stuff). I was about to be disappointed that it was in the book ONLY because I want to dig into the concept right away and didn't want to wait, but you went ahead and still gave it to us for free! I'm definitely getting the book anyway, but being able to read this part early is very much appreciated.
man your book sounds and look awesome... If shipping wasn't twice as expensive as the book itself I'd totally get it TuT
Yeah, true
Wonder of it will be a PDF or something
This actually hits on a lot of stuff I've been thinking about lately. Your art and the new book look amazing. Thanks for always doing such a great job!
Oh my gods an "unfamiliar". I need to salute that bit all on its own, that's a really good name.
Truly love and appreciate all your work! The Art, the Writing.. All of it.
P.s. Monday I am going to let my players buy pets so your timing couldn't be more perfect!
pointy hat you are my favorite youtuber in the world you helped me so much in dnd more than any other creator thank you for existing
It's probably because the book is shipping from Orgeon, not in house.
You deserve to be proud of what you've done with this channel and the Merch.
Staying true to oneself while keep growing is such a rare sight to see. Thank you Hat and his familiar *I wonder what the familiar can change into*
Beside your admirable work, I so enjoy your cheery attitude you manage to transport in every single one of your videos. You can cheer me up on (almost) my saddest day. Thank you! ♥
Ok, I really want to play a character who goes on an adventure to keep an affected familiar from becoming an unfamiliar and tries to find a way to control or cure the progression of it.
I swear every time you upload a video! EVERY TIME!
Bought the Black Mage Bundle and im so ready for the PDF and start begging my DM's to let me use the Awaked Familiar
As a fan, i'm so proud of what you've done and how far you're going to keep going.
So happy to see your channel’s growth, you are incredible ❤
Absolutely an instant buy for that codex and the sweatshirt. You inspired me to make my channel so definitely gonna show off your merch when I get it! Congrats!
Amazing collection Pointy Hat, looks amazing! Definately getting it. Hoping for more and more years of amazing videos!
You are describing the Eidolon Summoner of pathfinder 1e.
This came out at the PERFECT time. Midway through planning a campaign centered around alchemy and homonculi
a book?! cloths and a cute plushy? and it's not even Christmas yet! best merch ever
This plot is one of the most compelling things ever; I was immediately hooked.
I love your passion for this and how well you're doing! Great work on the book, and I love this familiar twist. It's fantastic ❤ I could see so many cool storyline!!
I was worried this would be a sad dog story. 9:50 I'm still a little mad that you had me thinking of Futurama.
Big Corpo HATES when our boy Antonio uploads even more free and actually worthwhile content, truly a legend in being a real one.
And I really like your style, I mean the drawing, and even the outfit design. It's sick. ❤
