  • LMS Stanier 4-6-0 Class 5MT
    We start off looking at double headed Black Fives, both on the main line and East Lancashire Railway.
    5000 (built Crewe Works, 1935) is part of the National Collection and is seen at Locomotion (NRM, Shildon)
    45110 (built Vulcan Foundry, 1935) hauled the first and final leg of the 15 Guinea Special on 11th August 1968, the final end of steam special is seen at the Severn Valley Railway (light engine at Bewdley and departing Kidderminster).
    45212 (built Armstrong Whitworth, 1935) is seen on East Lancashire, Keighley & Worth Valley and North Yorkshire Moors Railways, plus double heading with Flying Scotsman on the West Coast Main Line
    45231 Sherwood Forester (Armstrong Whitworth, 1936) is captured on the Bluebell Railway, at Ais Gill on the S&C and on the Conwy Valley Line.
    45305 (Armstrong Whitworth, 1937) is captured on the Great Central Railway, including double heading with a Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway 7F
    45337 (Armstrong Whitworth, 1937) is captured on the Llangollen Railway
    45379 (Armstrong Whitworth, 1937) is based on the Mid Hants Railway and is seen on visits to the Epping Ongar Railway and Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway
    45407 Lancashire Fusilier (Armstrong Whitworth, 1937) is captured on the East Lancashire Railway, heading south through Horton-in-Ribblesdale and departing Hellifield
    45428 Eric Treacy (Armstrong Whitworth, 1937) is captured in LMS and BR liveries on the NYMR, including on the mainline section out of Whitby
    44806 (Derby Works, 1944) is captured on the Llangollen Railway and her present home the North Yorkshire Moors Railway
    44871 (Crewe Works, 1945) is another 15 Guinea Special survivor and is captured on the East Lancashire Railway and on the main line in Devon
    44931 (Horwich Works, 1945) is captured on the main line around London and departing York station on a Scarborough Spa Express

    These locomotives are absolute legends on the rails, and their designer would be proud knowing some of his locomotives are still alive!

    Hi my name is Phil I did 50yrs on the footplate I started at edgeley shed on the 4th of April 1961in 1962 I was made a fireman I fired a number of these locomotive as well as others I finished my time out at 9A as a driver but on the 19th of February 1973 I fired the flying Scotsmen from Manchester to derby works and on the 25th of August 1973 I fired lender from derby to Manchester Regards Phil.

      Once, an engine attached to a train was afraid of a few drops of rain. It went into a tunnel and squeaked through its funnel and wouldn't come out again. The engine's name is Henry. His driver and fireman argued with him. That's what we meant to say!

      @C.J. Jones Of course, there's only one engine on Sodor who is like that, and his name is Henry.
