I listened to this album last night. I haven’t played it in over 25 years. It made me think what a talent Richie was lending his vocals to this Steve Hackett song! RIP Richie!
My favorite song from this record. What a perfect combo, these two. Magical! I can't believe I'm finally seeing Steve Hackett for the first time this October. I wish I would have seen Richie Havens live.
This makes me think of old friends i can never see again. But left with their memories, which were incredible. I miss them all terribly. God bless to all. And thank you Richie Havens R.I.P. Much love my brother. I love all your 🎶 music. And thank you Steve Hackett, great work on this also. what a mysterious beautiful tune. You both were magic on this 🎶 tune. ✌ ✌ peace ✌ ✌
Alex I know he had the Roland Guitar Synth on this album. Steve is seen playing the harmonium in the video (which I expect Nick Magnus actually played if it is a harmonium) so I’m happy to disagree in a spirit of friendship!
HOW CAN I?"

According to the liner notes in the Premonitions: The Charisma Years box-set: Richie was only penciled in to sing on "Icarus Ascending", which Steve wrote specifically for Richie. However, when he heard "How Can I?", Richie asked to sing and play percussion on that too. He then flew in from New York to Los Angeles especially to record it. Literally went straight in to the studio from the airport! Steve asked him "Aren't you too tired to sing a second song?" to which Richie replied "No, I don't get tired." "How Can I?" became a single after "Narnia" was denied a release (Epic, Kansas's label, objected to the original with Steve Walsh's vocals being released as a single, and another recording of the song with John Perry was rejected by Charisma). This video was filmed in London, it was directed by Tony Palmer and shot at Palmer's home near Kensington Gardens in London.
How Can I🎻 (Steve Hackett) The local radio - says sorry time to go But I don't sleep too well - where are those southern belles Tryin' to get a telephone line - through South Carolina Your call may bring somebody down - for miles around I'm watching her eyes again - I won't use no fountain pen The lady isn't here - the message wasn't clear She left an hour ago - screamed from the floor below Mother Nature never gives in - she wants you to sing But how can I go on- just singing this song My car's out of gas again - hurry home to see my friend Money won't help you to win - a new look at things Loving can bring you down so you fall Then why do you still try to get up at all Your good and bad side showing through - problems are a part of you You must love someone else - or face life by yourself You may expect a call - she's waiting in the hall See the garden grows and it grows- nobody else knows And you can wear just any old thing - the show can begin I'm falling asleep to dream - no more hills to climb it seems🎶 Money won't help you to win - a new look at things You never give in - so why don't you sing But how can I go on - just singing this song My car's out of gas again - I'll be home to see my friend🎶
I bought this LP in 1978. How did I not know until tonight that this video existed? WONDERFUL. "Mother nature never gives in/she wants you to sing." That line keeps me going.
These two saved my life when I was young and was very lucky to speak with him years later. Hes kinda like an angel, to me anyway. Hes was just one of those special few that impacted me. I got invited to Boston to see him. I didn't make it. He left us not long after. I missed something i shouldn't have. Call me crazy but i still talk to him when i need help.
There is something about this song, and this song/video, that has stayed with me for 30 years. And counting. In some way I can't explain, it just doesn't get truer sweeter ever than this.
Man what a writer Hackett was in the late 70s, complete please don't touch and parts of spectral mornings, harmonies from another planet. Stupid Genesis not to hold him in the Band ...
wow...where did you dig this up from?..lol...richie-bless his heart does a masterful vocal creation on this...took this song and made it his own..and steve..as ALWAYS..is just thee best...wow he looks so young on this...lol thank you so much.
Thank you Genesis Channel, this is new to me. Richie Havens and Steve Hackett. Melodic, moving and art I would not have heard were it not for your channel. Thank you. I am blown away.
"Mother Nature never gives in - she wants you to sing"
so effortlessly sung and played. Thats the beauty
The exepression on Steve's face as he looks at Ritchie, it's pure fan love ☺ I think lyrically Please don't touch is Steve's best album.
Historic

R.I.P Richie, and much respect for a sublime vocal performance on this beautiful song . Just an add on, I'd like to hear PG sing this.
I listened to this album last night. I haven’t played it in over 25 years. It made me think what a talent Richie was lending his vocals to this Steve Hackett song! RIP Richie!
Everything about this track is simply perfect.
My favorite song from this record. What a perfect combo, these two. Magical! I can't believe I'm finally seeing Steve Hackett for the first time this October. I wish I would have seen Richie Havens live.
One of my favourite lp.I have the Vinil ;). And that song give me a tear-
the most perfect vocals for this song.. richie havens is the greatest here.
I just learned that Richie passed away today. RIP Richie, I just posted this one in your memory.
Que gravação mais linda...não canso de ouvir...que voz maravilhosa....que músico maravilhoso....combinação perfeita!!
So inspired! Both songs Richie sang for Steve on this album are special. Wish there were more, but definitely grateful.
Magnificent Music ❤

It is a pleasure to listen to both this lyrical beauty and also hear Richie Havens singing the words yet 'again'.
beautiful song that makes me ache
i knew mr havens with this song 35year ago!after i saw him opening woodstock in a wondertful way....!RIP RICHIE HAVENS!
Wonderful performance.
A voice coming from the Heavens : that is Richie ! ♥
A man, a guitar and an organ sounding like a full orchestra.
brenda reber - I think it's a harmonium rather than an organ.
@@briane5706 It's actually a guitar synth on the album.
Alex

This is so moving that it brought tears...I love it...From the saddened Heart in minors... Deeply touching, thank you
This was my first introduction to the wonderful vocals of Richie Havens way back in '78 being a spotty 17 year old. RIP to a unique vocalist
magnificent guys. god bless.
great song ,great performers Cheers for posting.
A song I always play twice.
HOLY CRAP! This is way cool.I love them both. i've had this album since i was young, not knowing there was a vid. THANKS FOR POSTING!
Grande dupla....Bela Música!
What a voice. Freedom!!!
Le plus cool des albums de Steve Hackett RI P Ritchie
Wow. Just discovered this video. Never knew Steve and Richie made such a thing. Thanks.
Oh my Lord the memories.Class both of them
A piece of highest art !
RIP Riche I too like my Texas neighbor (postalpawn) will always think of Richie by this song.
Subscribed because I love this tune, and big Genesis fan.
Seems i need him again
A pure delight.
RIP RICHIE!
¡Fantastic!
Sublime
Ya me voy, con esta rola....😔
Una genialidad
... Money won't help you to win a new look at things....
lennons 'Across the universe'... influence definitely maybe. . ..
Isso é bommmm demais
lange gesucht und jetzt wieder gefunden!!
Simplesmente mágico !
Excellent song. Was this a single? PDT was Hackett's second best album after the debut IMO.
miss u Richie
Superbe !
RIP Richie
Problems are a part of you
Perfect... BTW, Steve. Is that the Zemaitis 12 string you drilled holes in? It still is the best sounding 12 I've ever heard.
Hackett replied,Havens told him to keep playing chords and Ritchie would make lyrics and voicing on the fly.
No Foutain Pen......but a voice and arcane lyric.....Hmmmmm
oh well
I never knew this had been a video either, and is that Tony Banks on keys?
John Acock on keys, most likely
The best ‘Genesis’ song ever recorded...
This must be Steve's most Beatles influenced song it sounds like he lifted a part from Across the universe, great song though.
Either this or I Know What I Like.
Ahh. There's the Zemaitis again.
Beatles esque
Brings Across The Universe to mind. But then, thinking of the voice of Peter Gabriel, it is easy to imagine him to sing this as well.
could well be a Beatles song
Alright now, who's smoking?!??
This guitar sounds a bit too much like bavarian folk music ;)

How Can I🎻 (Steve Hackett)
The local radio - says sorry time to go
But I don't sleep too well - where are those southern belles
Tryin' to get a telephone line - through South Carolina
Your call may bring somebody down - for miles around
I'm watching her eyes again - I won't use no fountain pen
The lady isn't here - the message wasn't clear
She left an hour ago - screamed from the floor below
Mother Nature never gives in - she wants you to sing
But how can I go on- just singing this song
My car's out of gas again - hurry home to see my friend
Money won't help you to win - a new look at things
Loving can bring you down so you fall
Then why do you still try to get up at all
Your good and bad side showing through - problems are a part of you
You must love someone else - or face life by yourself
You may expect a call - she's waiting in the hall
See the garden grows and it grows- nobody else knows
And you can wear just any old thing - the show can begin
I'm falling asleep to dream - no more hills to climb it seems🎶
Money won't help you to win - a new look at things
You never give in - so why don't you sing
But how can I go on - just singing this song
My car's out of gas again - I'll be home to see my friend🎶
Thank you for lyrics!!
Please Don't Touch is a fantastic album!
+Divlnorum One of the best solo albums ever recorded .
Beautiful. Steve Hackett and Richie Havens. A collaboration made in heaven.
I bought this LP in 1978. How did I not know until tonight that this video existed? WONDERFUL. "Mother nature never gives in/she wants you to sing." That line keeps me going.

Richie's voice is so suited to this song! He is sorely missed ❤❤❤
And a great album!
Amen
Does anyone else hear ‘Across the Universe’ in here?
Yes!!
There is something about this song, and this song/video, that has stayed with me for 30 years. And counting. In some way I can't explain, it just doesn't get truer sweeter ever than this.
33 years for me .
It's the timbre of Richie Haven's voice that hits the emotional chords.
I agree. Same might be said for a few of those Gabriel/Hackett moments.
Such a beautiful picture ❤️ and song that was painted here ❤️ sad, but in a healing way
So am I
Man what a writer Hackett was in the late 70s, complete please don't touch and parts of spectral mornings, harmonies from another planet. Stupid Genesis not to hold him in the Band ...
Not to mention Voyage
beautiful song two masters amazing
Always loved this song, such a deep rich voice
Amazing voice of Richie, so much emotion to everything he sang, superb
Steve HAckett.
Always the better part of Genesis...
he was the "glue" of genesis music
Genesis was the sum of all the parts, all members were vitally important.
Absolutely. And still the keeper of the flame.
UMA DAS CANÇOES MAIS LINDAS QUE JÁ OUVI!!!!!!!!!1
GRATIDÃO!!!!!!!!
Bought this album when it first came out. Oh to 18 again. Still love this album and this song.
Richie actually asked Steve to sing this song if I remember, Steve had someone else in mind.
so schön, die beiden zusammen zu sehen...
“You must love someone else or face life by yourself” - a beautiful line in a beautiful song. Best of Steve’s albums IMHO...
Rest in Peace Richie Havens

Just heard the sad news so had to listen to this song in the mans' honour.
Only discovered this today wow late to the party again story of my life!

All these years it never occurred to me to look for this video on RUclips. Thank you for posting. RIP Mr Havens.
Fantastic!
One of the greatest all time vocalists. I also have the album on vinyl left behind by a girlfriend "in the Day" Bittersweet!
Thank you Genesis Channel, this is new to me. Richie Havens and Steve Hackett. Melodic, moving and art I would not have heard were it not for your channel. Thank you. I am blown away.
