  • In this trip report, we take you through our experience flying with Qantas in Business Class from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) to Sydney (SYD) on an Airbus A380-800 (QF2).
    Rather than the usual Qantas First Lounge at Changi Airport, we chose the British Airways Lounge, known for its tranquility and comfort. This lounge was previously a joint venture between Qantas and British Airways as a First Class lounge, but Qantas later aligned itself with Emirates.
    Once onboard the flight, you'll encounter the newly refurbished Qantas Business Suites cabin, but you may find the inflight meal service disappointing, as it falls short of what you might expect even from an economy class product offered by other airlines. Service was nearly non-existent, aside from the moments when my meals were handed to me. However, I found it preferable that they left me in peace rather than providing a less-than-pleasant attitude.
    Amidst all the negative press, it's debatable whether Qantas feels the need to make a significant turnaround. Given its dominant position in the country, consumers have limited alternatives, leaving Qantas with a certain degree of freedom to operate as they see fit.
    I have learned my lesson.

    I am an Aussie and will never fly Qantas again after constant bad flights, poor service and food. Qantas is a very expensive airline to book and even though they get many complaints within Australia, nothing ever improves.

      I totally agree with you. I travel frequently on QF domestic as well and every time I'm just there hoping for the best. Hoping it won't delay or at the very least for it to depart on the same day. Not to mention avoiding contact with QF crew because you'll never know what mood they're in. And if I ever make the mistake of checking in my bag, I wish it all the best! 😂😂

    I worked as a Ground engineer at Qantas in the 80's when John Menadue was the CEO. A Chief Executive that cared for his staff and the airline customers. When I flew on other airlines and the cabin staff found out I worked for Qantas, a majority of them would tell me that working for Qantas was their dream job. We need more people like John Menadue running airlines and less people like Alan Joyce and his crew.

      Hi GilbertMoyes… I’ll never forget Menadue also….. he endeared respect from all staff at MEL Airport where I worked in Customer Service in the 80s also… he was the 1st to give all QF Staff an annual bonus payment & he was always approachable … you wanted to work for him/with him.. I recall receiving a monetary bonus also for a Staff Suggestion to speed up the huge and log-winded manual boarding of our 747s with their 16F/16J/401Y seating config .. reduced it from 45mins to 34mins thus giving us more leeway for ontime departures … but unfo he was moved on by the board after 3 yrs..… staff acknowledgement was not their strong point.
      Cheers

    Excellent and succinct report. Flew QF Business Melb-Lon return in April 2022.- never again. Took 40 minutes to check in at Melb. Seat divider didn’t work, took 90 minutes for meal service - even after Premium Economy was served. Advised that they had run out of champagne before the plane took off. Ran out of wine, offered economy wine instead. The only redeeming experience was the Quantas lounge at Heathrow . I responded to the standard Customer Feedback and invited them to contact me to discuss, but surprise ,surprise- no response. I got the impression that they couldn’t care less. This year I flew Singapore Business Mel-Lon return - a class above

No hot towel, no tablecloth, no mattress cover and running out of options from row 2. The crew though were attentive and friendly on both forward and return flights. There is definitely a lot more food offered in Emirates economy compared to QF business! hope the new boss understands she has a lot to do to get QF back where it used to be, a real quality airline!

    Can totally relate. Recently flew Qantas BNE to SIN return in Business. Flight out (a day flight) was superb. The return flight (overnight) was diabolical. The food menu was very similar, and totally awful. I had that same breakfast roll and the bread was stale and rock hard. I expected proper meal service, and was very underwhelmed. I have had far nicer food in Economy on other airlines. The flight attentants could not care less, and when Qantas sent me a survey about the flight I gave them my honest and respectful feedback. Did they bother to reply or contact me? Nope. It's such as sad state for them at the moment, Alan Joyce ruined Qantas, and his new lackie will be just as bad.

      Yeah I've had decent experience with QF day flights too but for overnight flights they're just punishing the passengers for having them working late shift. A few years back I made two Qantas return flights; one was Brisbane-LA return, and the other from Brisbane to Auckland return. The LA flight was an opportunity to fly in the upper deck of a 747 before they were retired. The NZ flight was on a Jetconnect plane with a lousy, broken J class seat. The return flight was on an Emirates A380 with their lie flat bed. Service was very inconsistent on all flights and were bad enough to swear me off Qantas permanently. Emirates, Singapore, Etihad, Qatar and JAL became my choice for flights to Europe and Air NZ for trans-Pacific flights. Virgin have never let us down on 1-2 hour flights south. Qantarse now has a shocking reputation with pricing, delays, illegal sackings and stepping in with the Qatar flight debacle and the Voice referendum. I'll never step on board a QF plane again.

    As an Aussie I’d love nothing more than to travel with our national carrier. Qantas was once a great airline, an airline we could be proud of. Now that Alan Joyce has left the building (hope the door didn’t smack him in the back of the head on the way out), hopefully the reputation of the airline can begin to turn back around. Hopefully the new CEO worries less about political, woke agendas and more about transporting passengers around the globe in comfort, on time, not hungry and with their luggage without having to re-mortgage their homes. Incidentally the last time I travelled abroad (Sydney to London) we flew with Vietnam airlines. Their business class product was not perfect but it was bloody good. Nice food, nice wine, lay flat beds and all in 2 year old 787s and less than half the price Qantas was quoting. I certainly doubt Qantas was more than twice as good.

    I’m an Aussie too and will never fly QF long haul/international. My SQ experience in economy was leagues ahead of the QF service rated in this video. Same with Thai. The “Spirit of Australia” is shattered which is a real pity. Thanks needs to be piled on the management of QF, especially it’s previous CEO who prioritised shareholder value above all else, including the wonderful team at QF.
    The lack of personal service highlighted in this video is a result of the QF management cost cutting strategy. It appears staff are completely disgruntled and the disease is only spreading. I share a broad view that it’s not going to get better any time soon. The incoming CEO has very tiny shoes to fill so has a great opportunity to turn QF around. I’m not holding by breath, though.

    Interesting. 2 weeks ago we flew on the 2 from LHR to SIN (then the 36 from SIN to MEL). We were in premium economy which on this particular A380, is on the upper deck down the back and behind one business class section.
    Service-wise, it was good. FAs were nice to deal with.
    Question: I understand that ex-LHR flights are staffed by UK based people (ie. British). As we didn't fly SIN-SYD I'm wondering if they use Aussie cabin crew for that leg. If so, maybe there is an issue there. But then, the Aussie crew on the 36 were also great to deal with.

We were served Champaign in the lounge before boarding. On board seating was like arm chairs, (remember when arm rests were padded)
    Food and service was incredible. Since then, it has slowly been downhill. The main reason maybe that in those days marketing people ran the airline and passengers were number 1. Today run by (Irish) bean counters who have the investor as number 1. Recently I did the same flight with SQ, same story. Not long ago did a similar voyage with Garuda. Were any welcome (predeparture) drinks, or predinner drinks offered? The salt & pepper in sachets is a bad sign & an insult to any Business Class passenger. Note the word "class" as the impression I get is that there was very little class in their product (I've seen better meals in cafes) or from the cabin crew. I understand that it is very hard to have a real balance between meal and sleep on a mid haul flight like this. I will be on QF2 from London to Sydney on J, I would rather have a good meal at the lounge then sleep onboard. Flat bed is also the most important factor in business class.

    I'm pleased that you addressed the issue of not understanding the menu during the flight recap section of your video. However, I would like to point out that there are still a few concerns with the captions and title.
    I travel this route several times a month, and your review does not align with my experiences. At 12:03, you mention, "that is all the food I'm getting on this flight," but later in the video, you showcase dessert, breakfast, and the lounge's snack selection. Furthermore, the menu you filmed, as seen at 08:38, clearly displays options for a mid-flight snack and breakfast.
    Regarding dessert, ice cream wasn't the sole choice available; according to the menu you filmed, you could have also chosen fruit, Panna Cotta, or a fruit plate.
    As for breakfast, while I understand that it may not have met your expectations, the menu indicates that you could have also requested yogurt, a croissant, fruit salad, or muesli. It's worth noting that, just like dessert, passengers in Business (or First) class can request multiple options; there isn't a one-choice policy for dessert or breakfast with Qantas.
    While I don't hold strong opinions about Qantas, I do value accurate reporting and dislike clickbait RUclips video titles. Although the crew could have been more responsive to call bells and explained their offerings better, it seems that there was a misunderstanding of the menu, resulting in a less enjoyable experience than you could have had.
    Additionally, this flight originates in London, with most passengers transiting through SIN. By the time passengers board the SIN-SYD leg, they have already received two full meal services and mid-flight hot snacks on the preceding sector. They also had the opportunity to dine in the lounge at SIN. While passengers joining in SIN may not have had the previous meals on the flight, they had the chance to use the lounge for dinner. The use of trays on these relatively short night flights aims to expedite service and allow passengers to rest before landing in Sydney at around 6 am. Daytime flights still provide the same service as seen in your QF81 flight between SYD-SIN.
    I want to reiterate that I'm relatively neutral about Qantas, but the sensationalism from RUclips airline reviewers is becoming very tiresome - I guess outrage sells. I can't help but wonder if your intention was to create a clickbait video to capitalize on QF's negative press and increase your views and ad revenue. While I commend you for acknowledging your mistake with the menu during the flight recap section, this aspect of your review is somewhat buried in the video. We all need to make a living, but let's strive for better content quality and accuracy.

      I understand your point regarding my expectation of a more elaborate meal in Business Class. While there were meals served on this flight, my experience left me wanting for a more comprehensive dining experience, and I didn't feel comfortable asking for more.
      This video is a reflection of my personal experience on this particular flight, and my opinions are shaped by my past experiences with Qantas and other airlines. While there were snacks and breakfast, and I'm grateful for a safe journey to Sydney, the overall Business Class offering fell short of my expectations.

    • @wenglock
      @wenglock 7 месяцев назад +3

      You are absolutely right in that the menu obviously indicates that there were more options. As such, I can only fathom that what had happened was either that:
      1. One or more options were simply not available (yes that has happened on QF, they simply never loaded a particular option/s for whatever reason), or
      2. The crew were not *that* forthcoming with explaining all the options and simply accepted whatever the author said they would have liked. I have unfortunately also encountered this with some crew on QF where they simply expect that you know what you want from the menu without bothering or wanting to explain what is actually available.
      I have found that with QF, you generally need to spell out to the crew exactly what you would like from the menu (and telling them you would like a plate of fruit, the ice-cream and the panna cotta is acceptable) when they come by to take your orders. This may be somewhat uncomfortable for some passengers especially if used to other airlines service, and makes the experience on QF not terribly premium because the expectation is that in a premium cabin, the crew should be explaining the options that are available to you.

    • @navsky
      @navsky  7 месяцев назад +2

      @wenglock - thanks for your comment, you articulated it so well.
      Yes my mistake for assuming by ordering a "main" selection, there would be "sides" that comes with it. I mostly keep to myself and never ask for anything during flights so when it comes to being explicit with crew or asking for more, unless it's offered otherwise I'm just not comfortable asking for more food.
      I guess although I was less impressed with their meal service, at least the crew would've enjoyed serving me because I'm the type of invisible passenger and never needs their attention 🙂

    No, it wasn't partly your fault and it wasn't that you didn't understand the menu as you suggest at the end - the meal options were cheap, limited and terrible, especially for what is supposed to be business class. That chicken looked awful and Qantas should be embarrassed. They have really gone downhill, and what makes it worse is the A$2.5 billion in profit they delivered last year. It's obvious they no longer care about their customers and they're probably relying on corporate accounts whose staff have no choice but to fly with them...

    I just flew in on QF12 from LAX - SYD, Business Class. This was the first-time flying Qantas since 2005 and I won’t be repeating it again. We had a similar experience with the crew, the passengers were an imposition, and they were quick to vanish. Food quality was average and minimal. I am glad this was a one-off flight with Qantas! They need some unrestricted competition in the Australian market and remove the political protections they seem to have. They need to fight for the business, improve dramatically or go bust! not have it handed to them on a silver platter.

    • @navsky
      @navsky  7 месяцев назад

      You're so spot on! Imposition is the word! They're absolutely the protected species of Australia and nothing will improve unless competition is let in. I did SYDLAXJFK last year and trust me I'll never ever book with Qantas again after what I experienced with the connection. It still gives me anxiety just thinking about it. 😱😱

    As an American, Qantas has been a blessing to fly. I understand a lot of Aussies have their gripes with Qantas, but I don't seem to get why. It's not to say Qantas is perfect, I strongly believe U.S JetBlue provides a far superior Business class experience for their domestic and international routes to Europe than Qantas has on it's domestic and International routes but it is still a good airline. Economy is more than comfortable enough for a 16hr flight to the U.S, although when I can spring for Business I do. I get it may not be as majestic as other airlines but the population of Australia is tiny, therefore their are far fewer flights an Airline can make and with the cost of everything else yeah it's a bit more expensive than it should be but I don't know how else anyone would expect Qantas to sustain profit. The only other airlines I can fly to Australia from the U.S is United and they're just as expensive if not more and well personally, it's way worse in my experience than Qantas.

    Hi, very interesting, I did the same flight, also in March from Singapore but to Brisbane on the awful 330 in business. We had the same blooooody awful chicken sandwich, both my wife and I agreed we should have had the prawn wonton soup. Our breakfast was just as bad, they messed my order up but at that point, I gave up and ate what I could. The 330 lay-flat beds have a "hump" in the middle so its uncomfortable so sleep in, the 380 is better. I do a lot of Qantas flights to/from Singapore mostly in Econ but sometimes in Business and you are right, the food is generally better down the back of the a/c, more choice and better tasting.

    After watching that, I'll stick with Emirates. I was never a fan of national airlines in Europe, after working in the middle and far east. I found Asian and some middle east carriers actually like passengers. Long haul on Eva Air was a pleasure with staff regularly coming through the aircraft with trays of soft drinks and I'm including economy. Japan Airlines took my shoes away after boarding Cairo and gave me slippers, shoes returned before landing at Heathrow polished.

I'll never ever pay money to fly them, all my flights on QF are 100% redemption. Can't imagine who would anyone pay so much money for such a shit offering. For such a so called premium carrier, they couldn't even be bothered to lay out white linens for meal service. I flew Philippine Airlines MNL MEL and it's featured in my channel. Just got back from doing Perth to Brisbane BC. I really wish they would stop jamming us into 737's. Its awful. Going over the breakfast was disgusting. Coming back dinner wasnt too bad. But you can see the cost cutting. All on one tray. No entree which they use to do pre covid.
    On both flights cabin crew were brilliant.
    But for the 5k it cost me, i could have flown Singapore to Europe return in BC on Emirates. I honestly dont get why its so expensive.
    But i will still fly the Perth Singapore route in either BC or economy on Qantas rather than Singapore. If up the front the seats on Singapore are so hard they make it impossible to sleep. My company always has someone flying, we dropped them around the same time you did this video. Even the US airlines are streets ahead of Qantas these days and mostly 20-40% cheaper in Business or First. It's sad reality as you want to support your country's national carrier, but Qantas at the moment are just out of play and out of touch. Further I am shocked, but then somewhat grateful, people are not trying the others as you will get way more for less. Sad really 😢

    I can also totaly relate to your underwhelming experience having had the misfortune to fly Qantas business class return Melb - Los Angeles. While this may sound unbelievable it is nonetheless true that when I asked for a bottle of water (as I had consumed the one initally provided) the flight attendants advised me that they had run out and I would have to fill the existing bottle myself.
    This was not three hours out of Melbourne on a long haul flight. The entertainment system failed and had to be rebooted on numerous occasions and the food provided was worse than a dodgy take away fast food shop - what a joke.
