  • An in-depth trip report on-board Qantas Project Sunrise London to Sydney non-stop research flight QF7879. Check out all the unusual flight details, research, well brings and the secret of double sunrise on the World’s Longest non-stop flight.
The flight is not a typical passenger flight; it is a delivery flight and a research flight. The brand new Boeing 787-9, VH-ZNJ painted in Qantas special Centenary livery operated this history making flight in just 19 hours and 19 minutes from London to Sydney non-stop covering over 17,000km! (10,500 miles)
Qantas has named its endeavor “Project Sunrise” after the airline’s historic ‘Double Sunrise’ endurance flights during the Second World War, which remained airborne long enough to see two sunrises. This flight is a prove of overcoming the final frontier of aviation, linking non-stop flights from East Coast of Australia to London and New York.

3 times I flew a former "longest flight in the world". LA to Singapore on Singapore Airlines. 18 hours in the air. Even the coach seats were more like business class. I don't think that was B777. It was most likely an A340-500.
      Back in 2003-2004.
For LA to Singapore route, A345 was the only plane that can fly that far and was the only plane that Singapore Airline chose to do that route. It was Singapore airline's longest flight and also was the world longest flight.
B777 couldn't fly that long, even for Extended Range version. There's a SIN-LAX flight for B777, but they have to stop in Tokyo first, then fly to LAX.
In today, Singapore airline is using the specifically modified A350 to do SIN-LAX flight, (A350ULR, Ultra Long Range. Airbus literally made this specific mod for Singapore Airline, there's no other company with this A350 mod)

Very interesting. I took a long flight on Qantas from Los Angeles to Auckland, New Zealand several years ago. Even then Qantas was on top of the science to regulate our circadian rhythms and make the flight seem much shorter than it actually was. Some of the methods employed on this flight were used years ago on that long flight. Meals were given at calculated times as were the times the cabin lights were extinguished and we were asked to try to sleep. I am still impressed to this day by how well Qantas accomplished this to maximize the enjoyable experience of the flight.

Pointless to spend this much time on a plane when they are still flying at same speeds they flew 50 YEARS ago. Super sonic travel needs to be resurrected with MODERN technology to gain the efficiency and practical implementation. “Noise pollution”? Yeah, that’s been rectified years ago by scientists. 1. Sitting in the economy
    2. Crying and screaming child
    3. Full of passengers in during stimulation flight.
    4. Dont occupy the business or first class seats.
    Try to be realistic sometimes.

so if you flew from London in January to Sydney you would be flying from mid winter to mid summer in 19 hours.

True, but that could happen in a much shorter trip if a flight went directly south, such as from New York City to Santiago, Chile.

Hi Sam, Thank you for this wonderful video,i enjoyed every minute of this long flight ,and the wonderful crew on board, and you were all in the safe hands of Capt.Helen Trennery. I did enjoy your chat with CEO Alan Joice,so interesting, i also was invited up to the flight deck of a 747 on a flight to Amsterdam ( UK) in 1978, to view the flight controls, its something i will never forget, they were a magnificent airplane. Thanks Again...

Hey! Thank you so much for making such a great video where the vibes came through to me so much, I felt I was there with you!
The intimate feeling, too, of belonging to such a historic flight also hit me just while sitting at my computer - a credit to your documentary making skills.
A great viewing experience, maybe close to going to Australia myself, with its beautiful land and people? *sigh*
Don't know if I'll ever get there, but at least there was this vid ;-)
    Thanks! :)
PS: How much fun were the staff on that plane, eh?
And the people waiting there to welcome the passengers to Australia! ...Wow :)

Sam, awesome documentation of the double sun rise flight from London to Sydney, the Boeing 787 is an incredible airplane. I will be interested in what aircraft they select to make the commercial flights. I am into long flight mine prior to Covid was the non stop from DFW to Sydney think around 17 hours on the A-380. I have dual likes on aircraft the 747 and the 380. My first 747 flight was from Dallas to Hawaii on Braniff's 747-100 called the "The Orange Pumpkin" My first flight was on a Connie in 1953 when I was three years old. I much enjoy your work that you do

Thank you soooo much Sam! This was awesome. I think that it would have been an awesome flight to be a part of, & the way you've filmed it, especially with the environmental sound being picked up all over the place, truly made me feel like I was sitting in your top pocket👌🏻

Bs they are nothing special, you forget the disaster over WA, 2008? Injuries to flight crew, little to no compensation, they only care about $$$ ffs! Only the great pilot saved it total disaster! Safety record / Qantas is overrated! Air NZ better!
