- In this Trip Report, we’re flying Singapore Airlines in Premium Economy from Singapore’s Changi Airport (SIN) Terminal 3 to South Africa’s Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) on an Airbus A350-900 (SQ478).
From check-in at Changi Airport, plane spotting, and inflight experience to arrival in Joburg. A total flight time of 10 hours should be a breeze with Singapore Airlines' award-winning service. But was it? Yes, I indeed paid nearly SGD 5k ($4,898 to be exact). Maybe I should have flown business with Qatar Airways instead. Is the price justified for flying direct to South Africa?
It was somewhat overrated since I didn't need the extra choices and privilege that comes with the price tag. Is it merely an Economy Plus or a truly elevated experience halfway between Economy and Business?
We’ll let you be the judge and do share your experience with us in the comments section below.

15:08 love the crewmember’s professional tone 🥂
Very professional 💯
I used to stay in Singapore and I loved Changi 😍
I Love The A350.Nice Cabin.Changi is world best Airport that is my opinion.Great work
Traveling out of Changi so often I do take it for granted. Next time I should have a good walk around and explore the airport! Thanks for your support!
Amazing video
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it 👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you for your beautiful video D
Thank you for watching!
Love your video..new subscriber :)
Yay welcome! Thank you for subscribing 😊
Nicely done! Looked a nice cabin. Food looked a little economy ish in its presentation for a premium economy product, all be it a little more generous size wise?
Cabin crew and flight crew usually have separate briefings, hence the meet and greet at the airport 😃
Ohh I see 👍🏻
I love this country 😍😍😍😍
Awesome :-)
Thank you!
An excellent presentation. Departing at around 1am and I think of the crew who have to prepare and behave as if it’s a normal 9 to 5 job. Watching passengers in the dimmed cabin enjoying movies while whisking along at 500 in pitch black, it truly is amazing. I think we forget how advanced air travel is and yes it’s now rather bland because it is open to so many people which is good and bad. I can only afford economy and I do not expect much especially short haul but on long haul definitely a drinks trolley and a reasonable meal. The trend seems to be reducing the quality of service but this I think was overall excellent. I wouldn’t pay the difference to fly premium economy but as I’m getting towards my later years I think I’d splash on business for one last send off. Although when I think of £2000 to £6000 maybe not. 😢cheers from London
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I remember the days when economy provided full service and those are hard to find now. Consumers are spoiled for choice these days but it comes at a price and shrinkflation. We'll be uploading another premium economy review soon and keen to read your thoughts on how you think they compare!
@@navsky Delighted to get a personal reply. You triggered a memory of flying Sydney to Launceston 50 minutes? It was with Ansett and we were served full dinner. How they managed I have no idea but I recall the flight attendants just making it to their seats for landing. I couldn’t even buy a drink or coffee on Virgin Sydney to Melbourne. Friends recently flew London Sydney economy with Qantas non stop and said they were hungry. Another flying back from London to Sydney in business arrived at Heathrow only to find out by text at the airport that his flight was cancelled. No help from ground staff, no hotel offered. I haven’t caught up to find out the response from Qantas after he made known his displeasure. Looking forward to you next trip.
Great review, but it looks like Singapore have turned the food Quality & variety down. Pre-Covid, i know they had the " Book the Cook" option, whefe you could pre order your meal for your flight. I know they used to even offer Lobster Thermidor on some of the flights. I take it that's no longer available?
Food variety was just very standard, no lobster that's for sure. I honestly didn't notice the "Book the Cook" option so I can't say for sure if that's still available in Premium Economy.
@@navsky Book the Cook was definitely a service feature of premium economy, Pre-Covid (business class / first class still has it ) . 😒
Book the cook is available on premium economy on most flights (you are certain to get it if you fly out of Singapore), They just don't really advertise it. You have to go online to change your meal under "manage booking", as you would with any special meal selection. For some reason it is not possible to book the cook in the SQ app, as I noticed the last time i flew with them.
Not sure the premium is premium enough for the price charged? Great trip report, with good details.
I've got a few flights coming up in premium economy with other airlines so stay tuned and 'spot the difference' 👍🏻
This is the trip I am planning with a hop on to Bangkok.
Great! Enjoy your trip 😊
For me, my days flying economy are over (unless it's a short trip). I can't afford business class but I can stretch it to premium economy. I'm not as tall as you but that little bit extra room and seat comfort makes all the difference to me. Hopefully they still have 'Book the Cook' in PE. The option usually comes in your email OR you need to be a Kris Flyer member? Last time I flew was pre-covid and our luggage was checked through with business and first class so when we arrived our luggage was first on the carousel. For me, little things like that make a difference.
Agree with you. In my case the price for this flight was a bit steep but like you said, that bit of extra room absolutely made a difference! Tbh I didn't notice the 'Book the Cook' option so I can't confirm whether it's still available.
Tell me about wifi services, is the economy class get the wifi compliment?
I believe complimentary wifi is available to KrisFlyer members flying economy.
Nice video, but I don't like the music during take off, I prefer the sound of the engines and other background sounds.
Thanks for the feedback. Sound quality is still something we're working on but we'll give it a go next time!
All of the "leather" shown in this video look like real leather, not "faux". You can tell by the way the leather folds near the joints.
Ohh oops need to work on my attention to detail. Thanks for pointing it out 👍🏻
hows the flight throughout? turbulence? smooth?
Only got a bit bumpy after breakfast service but overall smooth.
I am flying from Singapore to Johannesburg on normal economy on the 22nd December. Wish me luck 🤣
Exciting! It'll be a busy flight during that period for sure. You must be looking forward to it though👏🏻👏🏻
Sorry for my late reply@@navsky but Yes i am so excited. although departing at 1 am is crazy!!!
$4900 for premium economy is insane. Was it a last-minute booking, or is there very little competition for that route?
Maybe it was more the time of year and demand which drove up the price 🤷🏻♂️
the food in PE looks no Premium to me. Kinda similar to E. May be because E's food is too good. LOL
You're probably right about that! 👍🏻
I don't like to seat were the wing will block my view.
Totally agree with you!
Why you put music during the take off???I can't watch your video
Music adds oomph to the whole video 👍🏻
I kinda enjoy the music for the takeoff..haha..
😂🤷🏻♀️
@@navsky unfortunately it doesn't. You'll notice that most reports have no music or at least turn down the music for the take off. Good report overall, thanks; but next time less music please 🙂
Check out our more recent videos. We've taken your feedback onboard so please let us know what you think!
Horrible music ☹😵💫
Ok ok I know, horrible music but great content! Thanks for your feedback 😀
So apart from the seat and the tucker, what was the service like? Did you ask other people if they liked the food and check what was offered in economy? Was the service worth it? Personally, I don't dunk my croissant in my coffee - Ive got more class. You grumbled about a lot in judgment but resented paying the extra money for your ticket. You are the type that wants first class for an economy ticket. Jog on
Thanks for watching and appreciate you sharing your thoughts. Through this platform I get to find out how people feel about the flight and their experiences.
Spot on with the resentment as it was definitely a pricey flight for the product. I wouldn't say I'm expecting first class for the price of economy as I don't even expect value for money these days. Albeit the judgement, it got me there safely ✈️
What a waste of time, absolutely nothing about the seat or legroom. We are not interested in takeoff, flaps, etc.
Thanks for sharing your feedback. While we may not have included enough information about seat or leg room, some viewers find details like taxiing and takeoff interesting. We appreciate your perspective and will consider it for future content!
For that kind of money on a 10 hour flight I'd better go on business class, especially if you say Qatar airways, which is a great airline too. I got a SQ IST-SIN-JKT premium eco ticket for February, the price was about $1200 which I think is fair for the more comfortable seats. Regular economy was about $940.
I think any airline is cheaper if you use their hub as a transit. Direct flight usually is a premium.
That's a really good price for a ticket and not that much more than regular economy! Yeah I'm keen to fly with Qatar too. 👍🏻
Qutar doesn’t have PE class
Agree. Average indeed.
