Helen I saw a collage layered appliqué technique can be underneath or on top …maybe you already know about that….it doesn’t require the double sided addition…it’s a little more wasteful…a larger fabric scrap piece, which can be traced with a light box if it’s added on top…or the fabric under the area and pinned it is place on the back then FMQ stitched on and cut away at the stitching…seems like with the smaller features you are doing here it would be ideal. I’ve known about reverse appliqué but this layering technique goes so well in FMQ that it might fit this style better, it doesn’t require ironing in place. Angela Walters has several videos on “layering” quilting that illustrate it, it’s perfect for adding fabric patterns during or with FMQ and for those not wanting to do a huge amount of piecing. Using the negative spaces like you do with some bold prints. Love your stuff Helen!

Love the paisley pear quilting selection and the wood grain perspective. So some graded shading on the table could also go with the wood grain design. And the colors you’ve chosen to draw the eye there, although actually the boldness of the colors seems like I would have thought they were more equal in attracting the eye.
Since this is a still life I can see the dark receded and the lighter comes forward..but I’ve seen landscapes with the lighter colors behind now I realize that’s a little confusing for the non-artist background, to show the distant hills. In the landscapes front is medium with light splashes, then dark then distant hills are lightest. So I’m guessing it’s done that way to draw attention to the splash’s of light in the foreground with a pleasant variation in light/darkness (level or value) in the entire landscape as well as the perspectives. So I always learn something more about art watching your videos! Thanks

Hi Helen! Just wanted to say how much I am enjoying your videos. I first saw you on the Handi Quilter channel and have been binging your videos since. I have been wanting to try some freehand quilting but you make me feel like I can actually do it! One thing though, I have tried to purchase your Panda pencil but it is 21.00 for shipping from your web site. Is there a US distributor? I have looked but can not find them. Maybe there is a similar product in the US? Thanks again for sharing your art!

I Hellen I like your way to explain thank you! Don't you add some backing fabric at your block?
Does your thread weight 40? Cotton or poliester?
    Thanks for helping 🙂😊

She sometimes adds that after or double batts.

The thread is 50wt polycotton. With these style of blocks I paint and quilt each one separately with batting but no backing. Then they are trimmed and add sashing and then another layer of batting and backing under the entire quilt top. It’s my modified Quilt as You Go technique I use for all my Block of the Months. I use thin cheap batting.

@@annaaccardo9988 Helen has many helpful videos check out her short and sweet videos on free motion quilting. She comes from an art background which is unique. I like slightly thicker thread (40 weight) and I’ve added some fabric paints and markers for artistic expression because of her inspiration!
