    Basenjis are the best! I had my little guy, Benji the Basenji, for over 15 years. I miss him so much. Will definitely get another when I retire.

      The pain of losing a Basenji is unbearable. They are such good friends.

    That's so cute when you uncurl the tail, how it just curls back up like a spring. Great job puppy training, it's so important to start early.

    I hope to have a Basenji one day so I will definitely get back to this video once I do. I just want to either have a big apartment or preferably a house. Fingers crossed for a house. I found Basenji when I was looking for dog breed that are better for people with allergies and I am aware that they are not hypoallergenic but from everything I saw they are better for people with allergies and I keep falling in love with the breed more and more the more pictures on IG I see and more vidoes on YT I see.

    OUTRAGEOUS things! :D
    OK, I'll watch the rest of the video.

    Lol. Even though this is 10 years later. It’s good to see that walking a basenji is challenging even for a trainer

    Very nice video and you are very effective with your methods. I'm surprised the puppy wasn't overwhelmed with all the stimuli on that walk. Cars driving by, traffic noise, passerbys, etc. Nice work. Enjoy your lil' boy. =)

    Your so good with that little Basenji. They are my dream dog. They say they can be hard to train. Doesn’t look that way with your techniques. Love how you praise him. Do you use a special kind of harness?

    This is such a cute puppy. Dogs need to learn in all environments, including busy streets. This is to desensitize the dog to traffic. The goal is to have your dog trained so an owner can take the dog anywhere. I have seen some dogs sit at home but no where else. You have to continually train your dog at home, on streets, at parks. He is doing a good job training this puppy by introducing the dog to different stimuli. Puppies especially need to be introduced to all kinds of things that may be scary for them at first. Through your leadership and positive reinforcement the pup will gain confidence. Pu;s need to focus on their owner with distractions as well. As far as treats for lures are concerned it is not true that they will necessarily learn faster without the food. Lures can be favourite toys too. Some dogs are just not food motivated either so pets and attention also work. In the beginning use of food as a lure while the dog is a pup is useful. As the pup learns and associates the commands you decrease the treats.

    That Red Prelude in the back at 3 mins in. Lol sry... car guy. Love the Basenji.

  • @ezwaitloss
    @ezwaitloss 11 лет назад +7

    Good idea! Basenji's need to feel closer to the master and by NOT feeding them they will learn faster. Food helps them "get" it but after that they need to feel like they've done good and attention and praise usually does the trick. I have a Basenji that I can leave the door wide open and he won't escape unless I tell him he can and I give him NO food! They're crafty dogs and are smarter than humans so keep that in mind. A basenji puppy has no business in the home of a working American!

    Hi I like your vids they are so informative and really help to see the progression of learned behaviour!
    When is the best time to train? I assume if you train after a meal they will be less receptive to a food reward?
    I suppose my question is, if I come home from work should I train before I feed my dog or feed and give her some time then do some training?
    I know this vid is old... I hope you still read these!

    wonderfull video!great job! I have just one question...I am going to buy a basenji and I want to know if it's too difficult to train them...I already have a lot of dogs and I trained them very well but I heard that basenjis are not very easy to train

  • @davidthedogtrainer

    @VanRyzin Thanks for watching. I am going to re-watch it now and look for what you saw. I appreciate the criticism, but there is often method to my madness. However, I will look at the timing of the click. Reinforcement rate and quantity is not super high in this case b/c the dog is potty training, and is going back into his crate soon. Also, there is probably healthy debate on how long one can wait to present the UC (food) after the CS (click) to keep learning happening. Cheers.

    I wouldn't change broxi for all the money in the world but he is hard work but that's what you get when you buy a basenji, they are semi feral and we cant change them!

    Nice to see vids which include instructive imperfections and that you are honestly self critical. I find on my Doggie clips which I have to film myself, it is very hard not to make mistakes, I am probably a bit sloppy most of the time anyway but camming doesn't help :)
    BTW Though my SO has no interest in dogs, I need to R+/P- her when I am dog handling, just like Angela she has tendency to pipe up lol
    Thanks David!!

  • @NJBerry-om7kl

    I have my 2nd. Basenji now but I can promise you......both my girls would destroy that clicker & if possible ~ would tell you what to do with it! My 1st. Basenji was a 2 time AKC Champion but her training wasn't done using a clicker. My girls do now & did respond most to the cheery, "aww yes...you're such a good girl...yes you are a good girl" when said with much enthusiasm in your voice! My girls always get their "food treat" when they came in from doing their potty ~ I use Puppy Milk Bones or if I have Iams Biscuits, I break it in half. You did pretty good on your video but I'd have to get rid of the clicker & cut back on so many treats, as I'm sure you know...some Basenji's want to be "fat"!! BTW ~ that's a beautiful pup your training :)

      @dustyslim2505 10 лет назад +1

      That "clicker" is about the most annoying thing I have heard on any dog video.. Stopped watching one minute into the vid. Hope your "girls" do tell this trainer where to put it...

  • @avefenixyou
    @avefenixyou 8 лет назад +1

    what are you giving him as a treat? thanks

    • @humenbean
      @humenbean 7 лет назад

      Sorry this is way late, but there are treats like Rawbbles that are great for dogs because it's basically like their dog food, but fully dehydrated so it's easy to carry and not as oily as dog food. Too many people feed their dogs with 500 byproducts. Either their kibble or something similar. Just make sure to properly adjust their food intake. A good thing to do is to take half their food away for a meal, and use that for training.

    our 4 year old basenji broxi takes me for a walk! not my husband, he is always in control of broxi as is my 23 yr old son but me and my 17 yr old son get dragged all over the place when we walk broxi and he wants to fight with every dog he meets when he is on his leash but when he is off the leash he will play with just about every dog he meets even the ones he was trying to fight with the day before, I think he feels threatened when he is on his leash, he wont let strangers pet him,and never has tolerated them, has no time for any people other than his family who he does seem to love and protect but im fed up after 4 years with broxi not letting me pat other dogs I meet on our walks cause broxi goes nuts when I go anywhere near another dog, doent matter if its a puppy, a female or a male, he hates them all while on his leash and its spoiling our walks!! please help me

  • @salemsmine
    @salemsmine 11 лет назад

    while trying to give him food treats when training him it didn't work cause he isn't a greedy dog and broxi doesn't even eat the cats food, he isn't greedy and obsessed like most dogs so we cant use treats (even chicken or cheese) to help us control him,

    It's so nice to see a decent dog trainer working, RUclips is usually the domain of horrible wannabee dog whisperer types. I also loved the way you pointed out your mistakes. Your treat delivery was a bit slow, maybe look at a different pouch or treat or just more practice? Overall excellent job and that puppy couldn't be cuter.

    I feel so bad for the little Basenji ~ when he clicks the stupid clicker, the dog doesn't know whether to sit, stop or what!! And to start training him to walk on a busy street??? I'm sooo glad my Basenji isn't anywhere close to you... I'd have to bite you my own self. Pitiful job.

    • @kirklime
      @kirklime 7 лет назад +3

      The clicking happens whenever a treat is given so the dog learns to associate the two... then eventually, you can just click, no treat is necessary (unless you want). If you don't know what you're talking about, don't talk. JK I'm in the youtube comments, idek why.
