Love her head roll at 0:34. What a pretty girl!! Does she shake herself a lot? Our dog does it all the time. He has blue mixed eyes, so maybe part Australian shepherd? He also has an underbite.
She does not shake. She does indicate very clearly that she does not care for something by "sneezing". If I call her out on it she just stares me in the eye and does it again. LOL
I owned a Basenji when I was about 16 for a couple of years, until I was sent to a school in Canada. I grew up in a very abusive adoptive home, & my former adoptive mother always hated my guts, & made no bones about expressing it. My adoptive father in some ways was not as bad, but in other ways he highly supported & reinforced her behaviour. Very toxic environment, so I drew alot of comfort from my girl Basenji Tiffany. She was beautiful, & rambunctious. But I knew she would not be there when I returned, because my arch nemesis once threatened to get rid of her when we were alone in the house . She had a habit of running off if she had the chance, because as you know they are like greyhounds & love to run. On one occasion apparently Tiffany ran off, & my arch nemesis would not let her come back. My adoptive brother told me a while later that he thought he saw my girl in someone else's yard when he was driving by, & it made him mad. He said he wanted to go get her from them, & accuse them of stealing, but he knew better than to act like that, & he knew how his own parents were concerning me...I've often wanted another Basenji since then, but could never afford a full breed from a breeder, & when I called one years ago they would only sell me one if I was going to "show it" as a showdog... Maybe one day I'll have a chance to own another one... Love watching your video. How did you train her to twirl?
My dude associates going outside with getting a treat as sometimes in the morning he wont want to get out of bed and go potty but it needs to happen. When you let him back in he sits in a spot and just stares at the treat container and if you dont give him one or a piece of one he flips his shit, full on tantrum. My basenji knows how to speak as well, he grew up with a bulldog who would bark so he started doing little borks not to be left out.
@@myssemily As a former Basenji owner (5 of them over 30 years...), I can say that they can and will not only tolerate a cat, most of them will ignore them more or less outright. If, if... you are smart and introduce them properly. That has been my experience over the last few decades, having one Basenji in the house at ANY time and having had between 1 and 3 cats in the house living together at the same time. Just, be careful, if you have or get a really skittish cat, you CAN tweak a Basenji's prey drive. IF that happens and they start chasing the cat, and neither one calms down after a week or two, you will never be bale to mix the Basenji with the cat.
Yes but it's depends on both cat and Basenji personality. I dog board a Basenji and he gets on well with my cat but she keeps her self to her self and isn't too reactive with him and calmly walks pat him. She also stands up to him when he tries to wrestle and he just snorts leaves her alone then sits next to her. The definetly tolerate each other and seem to like each others quiet company . They love to sun bathe together in sunny spots in the flat.
I realize that ship has sailed by now. Clearly I hardly ever check back here. I trained my girl by telling her "Go Pee" every time she was already peeing. When she would look at me, while peeing after I said that, I would giver her a tiny treat. A few times of that and I could recognize her body language when she was about to start peeing and I'd try to say "Go pee" before she started and then when she did, reward her verbally and with a tiny treat. Eventually I could command her and she would pee. You also have to be aware of their sleep, play, eating, going out schedule and align yourself with that . My girl is a city dog without a yard so she learned how to pee/poop on command while out on walks.
Do you think the pitbull in her has mellowed her out? And that was not sarcasm! Pitbulls are generally pretty laidback, while basenjis are little divas (aka catlike). How is she with strangers? Reserved, eager to make new friends, or something inbetween?
Not sure about the pit/basenji combo. Sounds interesting though! My girl was open to meeting new people all the time as a pup, and we tried to socialize her a lot to help with the "aloofness" basenjis are characterized as being. There was a point in her growth, however, when she started being weary of strangers and she has been ever since. I always let people know when they come in "hot" to pet her (you have to assume people do not know how to greet a dog properly, and we've met many of them) that "she takes a while to warm up to new people. Let her smell your hand first....and don't take it personally if she moves away: she is like a cat. It works best if you ignore her."
They are a 10 if 10 is hardest to train. You have to be patient, get training on how to do it, be consistent, prepare and maintain the proper environment and in many ways adapt your life to their needs. They are not for most people.
I've seen TONS of posts, that say the Basenji is not a smart dog. I disagree! A Basenji won't just jump up and do what you want. She needs to see the reason for doing that. Kinda like a cat. I love these dogs and I am thinking about getting one. I am having a hard time to find breeders in my area tho. It seems like they are not a common breed. How is there shedding ? Also, are they good dogs for condo living ? around 1100 square feet of living space. How much they they usually sell for ? Thanks
Hi Travis, I am not a breeder. Just a giant fan of my girl Kunda. I did a lot of research before I got her and visited a few breeders (though I had to drive a few hours in several directions to find the right one). I encountered a puppy mill that reeked of bleach and bred another breed of dog in addition to several other fair breeders. One really stood out as far as animal treatment and mindfulness (and that was where I got her). There is BRAT (Basenji Rescue and Training), if you are up for getting a 1 year + dog (basenji puppy training is NOT for the faint of heart, they are literally the smartest dogs and this fact requires that their owners be smart, flexible and yet very firm in many ways and they can be relentless in their testing, even with very consistent exercise and boundaries to the point that some professional trainers have difficulty with training them). If you are looking for a puppy, the most important thing is to find a breeder who tests for fanconi syndrome (which is a common genetic disease that can lead to kidney failure (awful and unnecessary suffering) and premature death in basenjis). It is fully preventable, given mindful breeding. I sought out a breeder who genetically tested the pups and also had holistic veterinary experience. She also happened to breed pure bred champions. All of these things add to the price, but I feel that every penny was worth it. Most basenji's of her stock are show dogs. Sadly, I had her spayed right away, but she is my best bud, and a smart, silly and sassy one at that. I knew going into it, that was all I wanted from her. Check with BRAT for additional information. Hope this helps. If you end up getting one, send a pic! I can't get enough of the basenjis!
Oh, and she sheds a little bit when the weather warms following the winter. Basenjis are short haired, though. I imagine 1100 feet is fine. It's more important to factor in a securely fenced yard (they are escape artists and sadly, many meet their end this way so it must be taken seriously) and regular walks/runs (as they are highly energetic). For the 1st 7 years we did not have a fence but walked her several times a day and visited dog parks, went hiking, etc. So any time we left the house, she was on a leash. You should also know that basenjis can be stand-offish with people outside of your "tribe". This requires attention too.
Like a terrier's short hair. It doesn't get any longer except a little around the backs of the legs in winter and they do not shed. They hardly smell at all either, very clean animals. Their faces feel like velvet.
