When Diamond Head first released Lightning To The Nations 40 years ago in 1980, few could have predicted the importance it would carry with regards to heavy metal’s new wave and sound. Stacked and packed with riffs, Lightning To The Nations would be one of the prime catalysts for a movement known as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM).
Re-imagined, re-recorded and re-born in 2020, Diamond Head’s forthcoming 40-year celebration of their genre-defining debut album is a scintillating shot of fresh metal energy. With Lightning To The Nations 2020 listeners experience not only the rare phenomenon of crisp, fresh and new sounding songs with very little of the obvious original elements altered, they will also be treated to four supreme cover versions
Recorded over several sessions between various locations, from France to band members’ home studios, Lightning To The Nations 2020 central hub was Andersen’s Raw Sound Studios in London. It’s where Brian and Abbz did the guitars in February and March of this year, and then with the COVID-19 chaos striking, Andersen worked on the album between April and July, with Tatler’s watchful ear inspecting final mixes and tweaks in early August before sending off to mastering at Metropolis Studios in London.
This edition of the album sees Diamond Head spreading their wings and creating the heaviest of homages to Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest, Deep Purple… And Metallica.

Probably my favourite Diamond Head song. I love this and it's also cool to play on the guitar. Hope it's OK to say the solo feels better than the original. This also benefits nicely from the Eb tuning.

One of my favorite tracks from the original line up. This remake is amazing. Drums are heavy as hell. Guitars are tight and punchy. Rasmus knocks it out of the park with his masterful vocal performance. So great to hear these tracks with the current lineup. Hope to see them live again in the near future. Great work guys!!!!!

Shame “In the heat of the night” wasn’t included in this re-recording. I prefer the original recording to the MCA version, although I’ll willingly listen to either.

They should how have kept it closer to the original in tempo and the way the main riff is played, no hammer-ons and they cut the awesome riff after the second chorus?
I still prefer the original but this is pretty good too.

Would have been better at a slightly faster tempo- 1.25 speed is too much, but 1.10 would be perfect.
You can do that with custom settings and yes, it sounds better slightly faster which is the songs original tempo.
Ain't nobody doin' this stuff like the old line up. Why was this released anyhow ? To improve the technical aspects such as " sound " ? Whenever there's a lot of feelin' and talent , " Good sound, better sound " might be totally irrelevant in Rock, in real art.

...but, I can't be the only one thinking that this is the easiest-ever guitar riff to play & on top of that, it is just repeated the entire song. Sounds cool at first for a minute or two but, the rest of the song I was on the edge of my seat expecting the next riff. Never heard it...
I’ll agree it’s easy to play. Maybe that’s the appeal of so many NWOBHM songs, y ‘know?
I guarantee, I can go into Guitar Center any day of the week and demo a guitar/ amp combination with the intro riff to “Sucking My Love”, and three fourths of the store is gonna turn their head in wonderment!
