Raising the 11foot8 bridge by 8 inches

- On October 29, 2019, a crew hired by Norfolk Southern and the NC Railroad Company raised the 11foo8 bridge on Gregson St. in Durham, NC by 8 inches (20 cm) to increase the clearance over Gregson St to 12 foot 4 inches. The purpose of this $500000 project was to improve traffic safety at this railroad trestle. We have documented 150 crashes of overheight vehicles at the old 11foot8 bridge since April 2008. This is the end of the old 11foot8 canopener ... welcome to the 11foot8 +8 bridge. Let's see what happens :)
In a related story Uhaul has raised the height of their entire fleet by 10 inches.
the local rental dealer knows every time he ends up with a truck that needs service, he sends it that way. someone else will pay for it. "well, of course the brakes and radiator were fine when you rented it." snicker.
Lol, best statement this year !

Interesting point: why don’t the rental companies lower their fleet’s max height so they’ll all fit?

The scaffolding those jacks were on, im blown away that supports a bridge!
That's what I thought. What are the jacks even doing there? A quick check of acrow prop limits shows that each 'screw pole corner' of those scaffolds can support about 3 tons. Looks like there a 2 x 4 lots. So under each jack I'm assuming 12 tons max working limit. 24 tons for 2 jacks combined. Surprising amount actually
If you think about it, the bridge itself probably isn't that heavy - it's the trains overtop that really need the support! So shutting the bridge means they can use very small jacks.
You'd be surprised. If I'm not mistaken same jacks are used when leveling a house where the foundation has sunk.
@@alexzee4564 I think he was more surprised about the jacks being on scaffolding being able to lift, not the jacks themselves.

That it's come to this, literally lifting a bridge off its supports so that it can be raised higher, is just astounding. Yet here we are, nearly a year later, and it still wasn't enough. Incredible.
Esspecially since it would have taken a weeken to lower the roadway 4 feet.
just put a beam over each approaching roadway AHEAD OF THE BRIDGE and hang Chains from them a little longer than the clearance of the bridge, then the driver can hear in advance when his truck hit the chains if its to high, now you have gone and raised the bridge, what videos are we going to watch now

As far as I understand, there is a sewer line directly under the road there, so they can’t lower the road any more than it is.

@@--_DJ_-- pretty sure the other jacks that were sitting directly on the abutment were doing all the heavy lifting. Those jacks on the scaffolding were there to minimize sagulation in the center for shimming.
@@mitchdenner9743 Sagulation, I like that.
@@--_DJ_-- The word sagulation itself is likable but not any thing saggy it is describing!
*Most rentals like Enterprise, Ryder etc, are 12'6", so get ready for some sweet peel-backs!!*
The road surface moves up and down a fraction of an inch, changes in tire inflation can change ride height by inches. The metal on the truck expands and contracts with temperature. The suspension of a truck can add or subtract inches.
A loaded truck with springs might fit under the bridge in the morning when everything is a little chilled, then not make it through on the return trip after everything warms up and the truck is loaded.

@@hamjudo Traffic under the bridge is one way.
Ooooooh yah! In Texas some low bridges have exits and entrances for truckers to bypass.. Urban areas don’t have the luxury.. Ennis,TX has a low and tight bridge that only cars and tiny trucks can go. The rest are stuck out.
@@lawnmowermanTX There's a low bridge in the middle of downtown Austin which has been hit so many times that the inner steel rebar is starting to be exposed and chunks of it broken off. It was only until a couple of years ago that the city put up overheight warning signs, but they're mostly useless because the exit for overheight vehicles is literally a few dozen yards before the bridge and is dangerously short, making a multi-vehicle accident a high chance of happening.
But that's assuming an overheight vehicle isn't smack dab in the middle of heavy traffic, which on that part of the interstate is from 5am-10am and again from 2 pm to 8 pm.
I saw a previous video where 'the railroad' refused to raise the bridge and the road below could not be lowered because of sewer pipes under it. I'm glad the 'railroad' finally decided to 'GET IT DONE"!
They only allowed for 8 inches though. Raising it to national standard would require re-leveling miles of track and that's.... just not going to happen.
Appreciate the crew being cool with you filming onsite
My greatest regret is that I'll never get to see this bridge at its 11'8" glory.
I’m going to miss the can opener. 😢
It'll still going to happen because most trucks are still above the clearance of the bridge
@@KaddeMario Yup. If anything, LOWERING the bridge clearance would likely reduce accidents there. If it's clearly too low, you won't have the yahoos thinking that they'll _probably_ squeeze under it.
They will still crash, will still have or fun at the 12'4" bridge channel
There's plenty of trucks that are 13' to 13'6 that will probably hit it
I think all the Ryder trucks are still going to get a shave. I don't know about Penske, or the other rental companies. Haven't seen a video in a while.
Crazy interesting on how they do this. Thanks so much for sharing. Great video.!
London double decker: "hold my beer."
Plot twist: They forgot to raise the bars in front of the bridge.
Only if you were one to not see the previous video of that being done first. or notice the new beam.
Wanna Bet? They did that first.
This is unamerican we love watching truck roofs crumble like sardines
Don't worry they still didn't make it tall enough lmao. Most rentals are 12' 6" and other trucks and trailers can be even higher.
@@C8mon yeah, but they got it at that perfect heights where it just hits and that's gotta hurt even more
The thing is most of these trucks are 12' 6" and still wont fit.
Have you seen the video for 11-8 evil brother???
It's unamerican as a corporation had to pay to upgrade their own infrastructure.
4:57 that beautifully, freshly painted BEAM! So straight, not a scratch ... (for the moment)...
Ballast Tamper theme is stompin !
It's a sad day in RUclips history! No more 11'8" bridge.
5:28 This ballast tamper is nicknamed "the beam".
It uses laser beams aimed at a cart 50 to 100 feet ahead to measure a tracks geometry.
The computer then tells The tamper components how high to lift the track and how far left and the right to move the track
That ballast tamper is a pretty neat invention.
I am pleased to see that this has reduced the severity of these incidents from most losing all their roof to most losing half their roof but in either case always losing all their dignity.
