This Bridge Continues Wreaking Havoc on Unsuspecting Truck Drivers | NBC Nightly News
Rather then signs, they should put up billboards with images of the de-roofed trucks :D
And a text under it, reading "You're next!"
@Scoppah Zee Mabye they should just fix the gps, and have the gps factor in headroom to it's equations.
And on the other side of the bridge it would says “ I tried to warned you”
Like Action Park's Alpine Slide.
Or, "You are here". Driver: "HUH?" Then, BAM !!! SCREEEEEECH !!! Driver : FFFFFFFFFFFFFuuuuuuuc !!!
that is an excellent idea. and one of the bridges already have that and it is working!
Let's blame an inanimate object that's been in the same spot for 100 years, not the people driving past the signs, under the yellow flashing lights, and directly into the bridge.
Duh! Yep! I got e nuff clear!
@zion chan : The bridge was built 75+ years ago, BEFORE there was a predetermined height for semis or for bridge height clearance. Don't blame the bridge or its designers for not being able to see the future; blame the drivers who don't see the signs and warnings.
This bridge is evil, it somehow lures unsuspecting drivers in. There is a video where a driver takes a good look, turns and goes around the block and then unsuccessfully attempts to go through.
@@onorebakasama they aren't technically running red lights. Part of the "prevention" is that the traffic light immediately turns red. It looks to the normal person like running a red light, but if you watch closely you will see the light go from green to red and the "warning must turn" flashers come on...
@Decepticons and Cobra had a friend drive in circles in a parking lot for a bit because gps said to.
It thought they where on the main road so it just kept freaking out.
I said something about it and they just said "its what the gps said".
Ended up the gps figuring it out after passing the exit twice that it told him to take the right to exit from the parking lot.
Definitely a wtf man moment.
They raised it 8 inches. People are *STILL* hitting it! 🙄🤣 Long live the "Can Opener!" (11' 8"+8" 😁)
I don't know why, they can't say no trucks allow on that road. Then this would happen less rarely or at least it should.
You can't fix stupid,
@@gimcrack555 Because despite all the videos, it only averages to 1 truck hit per month after the raising of the bridge and there are still _many_ trucks that _can_ fit through
Actually no the Bridge itself was raised but the yellow bar stayed at 11ft 8inches
@@juanherrera7020 actually no, you can see a 12ft4 sign there now, the bar was raised, sadly the iq of the drivers has not
1:24 "I thought I had enough clearance!" I lost it there, I'm dying laughing! xD
Marcus Dorsey lmao they all must be thinking that. The question is i thought and what the sign says is another thing
>>OVERHEIGHT>MUST TURN
Literally like 10x signs including a large brightly lit sign.
People want the government to protect themselves from their own stupidity.
And yet they call the government stupid anyways
I feel like that’s the exact words of every truck that drives straight through the 11 Ft. 8” Bridge.
Famous last words "I thought I had enough Clearance"
"I thought I had enough clearance!". Famous last words.
don't stop the bridge, it teaches valuable lessons
Useful Entertainment Exactly! the bridge is just doin' it's job, folk...
It's the natural selector
Maths?
and what lesson is that? read the sign
that accidents happen?
They should just set up bleachers & sell popcorn. Make some money for the town.
If this was local to me I would be doing that.
dreams of turtles OMG you made my day!!
dreams of turtles I'm lolling just imagining someone slamming into the bridge and all of a sudden they hear a bunch of cheers and applause from tourists in lawn chairs
dreams of turtles Works for nascar.
Yeah they could hold up score cards like the judges in the Olympics do.
1:24 *"I thought I had enough clearance"* awwww, he sounds so cute when he says it.
It's okay, buddy. We'll get your truck fixed.
But it'll cost you.
"It's okay, buddy. We'll get your truck fixed."
RENTAL TRUCK COMPANY: "ummm, damage on this specific bridge which we verbally warned you about before signing, is that you pay for damages"
That is just so _evil_ to put up webcams and *SELL* the wreckage. _I love this guy._
Also very american lol
@@wendycarothers He is German, if I had to guess...
Yes he is German but his thought process regarding making money is a bit american
@@wendycarothers He's been infected by the American disease!
You have no clue what "evil" means then, apparently.
All the new fancy warning signs have done NOTHING. Check his RUclips channel. People are still hitting the bridge. You can't fix stupid.
Yeah I saw some videos with the new traffic lights there. The warning sign only comes on when the light turns red, not when a truck higher than 11'8" approaches.
Which would then flood. Drivers MUST pay attention.
The light turns red and stops traffic when an over height truck approaches it.
Like have you stand in the road?
The lights will change to red when an overheight vehicle is detected and stay red for a few seconds to give the driver time to read the sign. The light doesn't change to red if it's already red, but it will stay red longer so they might read the sign.
The new signs and traffic signals have reduced the amount of crashes, but they haven't prevented crashes altogether.
Penske truck rentals, prices so great you will blow the lid off.
Ryan Toomey underrated comment
Roger Penske has been involved in open cockpit racing for many years. 😏
I live in Durham and on a field trip we went under the bridge and a big bus we all cheered when we didn't get roof scraped up
Lol
the can opener 11foot8: Turning semi trucks into convertibles since 1941
Underrated comment
Today DaBaby gets turned into a convertible
Not semis. We would never try it. Our trucks are 13'6" tall.
Unsuspecting? Maybe you should know how tall your truck is?
Yes exactly! ima proffesional truck driver all tractor trailers are 13ft 6 in. tall and all box trucks are 12ft 6in. I have been down near that over pass in NC and 2 drivers at my company have hit it. the main reason is they use Google maps which is for cars only if they would only invest 200$ for a truck gps sold at all truck stops this would be avoided anywhere in the usa because you can log your height weight and width in it and even what kind of product your hauling but even so all driver should know the height of their truck because it is written backwards on The side of the trailer so you can see it in your side mirror!!! rank ametuers
I love your profile pic! LOL
Professional driver here too......it's a case of knowing how high your vehicle is.
If in ANY doubt, get a tape measure out and check, then display the height clearly in the cab.
Simples.
Andy Preston I was thinking exactly the same truck drivers should know how high the truck is and like u said they need to measure it and I would probably write down the figure on a bit of paper keep it with me and when I come to a bridge with a certain height check the figure I wrote down and if its lower then change my route
Silent Cheech Gaming You should, no doubt. However, accident after accident keeps happening. Waiting on people to suddenly become "smart" is not working.
I'm a professional driver and I drive tractor trailers and I have been to this place in north carolina multiple times and the reason these unprofessional drivers hit this bridge even a few drivers at my company have. the reason being is most are stupid because they do not know the height of their truck the normal height for a tractor trailer is 13ft 6in. And normal height for a box truck is 12ft 6in the best advice I can give to any driver is to watch signs for all over passes that are not on an interstate. if there is no sign at an overpass then it is above 13-6 buy a gps made for trucks you can log your height weight and width into a truck gps, do not ever rely on a Google maps or any regular gps because its only made for cars
IF you seen some of the videos, you would know it is not just trucks, its also RVs such as tow behind and motorhome.
SENCE
Agreed, truck drivers are morons.
☠MrHairyNutz☠ rand McNally tdn any version
☠MrHairyNutz☠ tnd rand McNally 525 works well and is not too expensive
As a Class A Licensed driver, I have driven box trucks that are 13' and even 13'6" and not ever went under a low overpass with over-height truck, yet, almost did once but smart enough to stop ad had to call police for assistance as it was a fairly busy intersection in a congested area in CT by NY.
That bridge was made by Gillette because those are some clean shaves!
They should have advertising on the bridge
Josue mos def. that place is a tourist attraction now that I know where it is.
Schick! Err, I meant "slick"...
Ha ha!
Hammer it on through for a clean shave to avoid stubble.
They raised the bridge 8 inches and the guy is still uploading videos.
And with the phrase, “there’s a sucker born, every minute of every hour”, the guy will be making videos of this till the day he dies lol.
don't mess with it. I love watching crashes
funny comment. lol
Justin Vasko Its good for shops to keep them in business and to watch something downtime.
I wish somebody would put a camera on the other side of the bridge so we could watch the facial reactions of the drivers who hit it ;-)
Durham's bridge of shameful joy.
They raised it.
you have it backwards.
the trucks are wreaking havoc on the unsuspecting bridge.
you have it sideways.
the nut brain drivers are wreaking havoc on the innocent bridge with their trucks.
The bridge doesnt wreak havoc, stupid is just too widespread.
TJusnow its not too wide its too short dummy.
lol I hope you were trying to be ironic.
Golden Grenadier No "Dummy" Too many people driving trucks cannot read directions and warning signs for this bridge. And you just proved my point on stupidity being too widespread. You didn't even understand my comment dummy.
Jesse Ansell I was.
TJusnow If you had used a semicolon after havoc instead of a comma people wouldn't misread your run-on sentence.
we need to lower this bridge so we can start taking cars out, as well
they’re raising it
Here we hate discrimination, that's why we should lower it so that all vehicles have to be shaved one way or another

167 crashes in 13 years is an average of about one a month.
LOL. This bridge brings in tourist revenue. 😅
"He even collects the debris and sells it." Lololol
When you thought you had seen it all on RUclips, this cute bridge comes to take me out of my boredom. This is so entertaining.
^ What Albert said^
I like the way we blame the bridge and the road for this, instead of the people who don't understand what the signs mean. Take your eyes off your phone, and read road signs.
Again, how long ago was that rail bridge built. What were the regs at that time?
Rocket Ship 27 standards that wasnt in place at the time when it was built
I agree that the driver is ultimately responsible. However, crash after crash KEEPS HAPPENING. Waiting on people to magically become smart isn't working. At some point, either the bridge needs to go higher or the road needs lowered. Or keep having crashes.
Ted Brenneman I think the problem is the amount of money they would spend raising the bridge and the track for miles down the line to make that safe, or lowering the road and having to reroute the mains that are underneath it.
Stanly Swan I understand. Neither option would be cheap. But those that say that the current layout has NOTHING to do with the situation are just ignoring the facts in my opinion.
Who's here after they raised the bridge to 12 feet and 4 inches?? 😥😥😥
EVERYBODY !!! LOL
Just put in the same type of hanging sign installed in Griffin, GA, which says, "If you hit this sign, you will hit that bridge".
except the delivery trucks to businesses along that road and the road paralleling the bridge would hit it, damaging their truck when they had no intention of going under the bridge
And if you watch some of the newer videos, not only do the drivers IGNORE the overheight sign, several have also run the RED lights accompanying it just before slamming into the bridge at road speed.
And where would you put it? Overheight vehicles are allowed on all 3 roads, just not under the bridge.
@@stargazer7644 Or how about just force all traffic to turn if an overheight vehicle approaches the bridge?
@@denelson83 Well the sad thing is when the overheight sensor trips it forces the traffic light into an immediate red cycle to give the driver time to consider his next move. But half of the crashes are the driver flooring it and roaring through the red light and smashing into the bridge. So if the driver is running a red light and ignoring a big sign saying "OVERHEIGHT - MUST TURN", I'm not sure how you'd force him to turn. If you put gates across the road I fear they would be something that would have to be constantly replaced.
New warning system....
And people are STILL crashing!😂😂😂😂
Non-commercial drivers in rental trucks or RV's hitting that bridge beam is one thing. They're just idiots for not paying attention. Commercial drivers hitting it is quite another. They should always know the height of their rig and always be paying attention. A commercial driver who hits that bridge beam even after all the signals and warning signs should immediately lose their CDL.
Lmao I love the driver who crashed he was so chill, “I thought I had enough clearance”
It’s like dude, there’s a flashing sign up there that clearly says you don’t.
This bridge is a true IQ test
precicely
I agree, it shows who voted for trump
It shows the difficulty of getting a warning believed , After the latest improvements, there's still one or two impacts per year . We live in a noisy world, and we all need to ignore some stuff .
Here in Australia we have a similar problems and one notoriously low bridge in Melbourne, the Montague Street bridge which has a clearance of just 3 meters (10 feet). In the heart of the city on a major road and still truck hit it, even an interstate bus managed to strike it less than a year ago. But the same deal, took expensive to lift the rails or dig the road deeper.
"Unsuspecting"?? Are they blind and unable to see all the signs and flashing lights?
1:24 "i though i had enough clearance" isnt that what all the truck drivers think 🤣🤣🤣
It got raised 8 inches, with a special warning system installed, and drivers are STILL HITTING IT!
Stupid is as stupid does! 😤
Momma always said, "stupid is as stupid does"
"Unsuspecting" lol you mean not paying attention and shouldn't be driving a truck lol.
"I thought I had enough clearance."
Just like the other hundreds truck drivers.
and bridge wins every time
It's early 2022 and the "Can-opener Bridge" now has 8-inches more clearance yet it continues to be struck by unwary drivers regularly.
very simple solution just install no trucks sign
They've done that now. Someone just hit it.
they have had signs for years people still hit it!
no!!! nothing wrong with bridge or road its the idiots driving people.
why?? plenty of other roads or other ways to go and plenty of streets trucks are not allowed. goes back to pay attention cuz this went on way before gps or cell phones you know. there are 2 bridges in Durham where this is located both clearly marked. like i said before people go wrong way on interstate how are we gonna accommodate those idiots.
They can't raise the bridge without spending an insane amount of money, because trains can't really do slopes, and there is a railway junction just after the bridge, so all of that would have to be redone (and raised).
They also can't dig down, because there is a major water main 4'' below the road.
Basically it's a perfect storm.
The title is completely wrong. It's not the bridge causing these problems, but those incompetent drivers who have no clue about the size of their vehicles.
6 years later they keep crashing in to the bridge. They raised the bridge too.
Booooo, hissssss, the authorities raised this bridge by 8” (eight inches) in late October 2019, but did that ruin our fun?? Not completely. A truck clipped it before Thanksgiving, with only a slight shave off the top.
What do you mean "unsuspecting" ? All they have to do is read the signs !!!!
Reading?! That's a woman's job! /s
Robert Clolery no one pays attention anymore...
Wonderful 11' 8" bridge. Every town should have one. Cheers!
I know this is not supposed to be funny but why can't I stop laughing? Anybody else having a chuckle?
I never understood how this even happens because every truck driver is usually required to know the height of the truck that they're driving so they should obviously know if their truck is too tall to go under this thing
I've seen awesome warning signs where a waterfall turns on and a huge holographic sign is projected upon it. You can't miss that.
I know what your talking about there in Sydney Australia.

No it doesnt. That is a complete LIE. There are warning signs and lights aplenty. It's on the drivers, not the bridge.
Guess what? New traffic lights *were* installed. A new fancy sign *was* put up. A week ago we had crash #108. It's hard not to gloat.
15 September: Now up to four crashes since the NEW! IMPROVED!! warning system installed.
The bridge was raised to 12foot4 this year, or as the creator of the RUclips channel calls it "11foot8 +8".
Yet despite the bridge being raised, there was still a crash that happened recently.
@@bowmin1 many more since then, seems like the only way for crashes to stop is to stop letting the literal Mr. Pepega drive trucks or even at all.
I've rented a moving truck a few times and was always paranoid about the dimensions of it at EVERY turn. I remember stopping at a filling station and getting out just to make sure I'd fit under the roof. It's the "I've got this" types that are beating this bridge up.
It’s been raised. Now 12 four 4 inches. Most miss now, but a few still hit. 😂😂😂
"I guessed I had enough clearance"....
Well let's put it kindly...
*"You have NOW"*
ROFLMAO!
They are not unsuspecting. They don't read the signs
Perfect reason to have your license revoked
✋
On one of the videos , a truck pulls up and decides to go a different direction. Minutes later , he returns and hits the bridge.
And after the bridge closed a few weeks ago and actually got raised up to eight inches to 12'4", there was another (mild) hit yesterday, November 26th, 2019. So 11'16" strikes again.
That's a bit unfair , it's unobservant truck drivers continually wreaking havoc on that poor bridge . I've never seen a bridge festooned with so much yellow , apparently the drivers don't see it either.
That bridge got grandfathered in. Bridges, and overpasses built after 1956 have to be at least 14 feet, so the modern trucks that are normally 13.5 feet can pass underneath. This bridge was built in 1940.
Imagine being the trucker to turn left (as supposed to) and getting honked/yelled at by another trucker for not going straight.
I hope it is only signage they put up and the idiots keep not heeding the warnings. This is priceless entertainment!
"I thought I had enough clearance" lights: flashing
What is the IQ of truckers hitting the bridge? Are they literate?
Just read the signs that simple.
"The can opener?" Oh that's awesome. XDDD
Bet the locals when there bored just get popcorn and sit beside the bridge
“Crash art”! 🤦🏼♂️
Oh look- they installed the new signage over a year ago, and stupid still keeps crashing!
ALL HAIL THE CAN OPENER.
We will make the bridge great again, it's going to be awesome, tremendous
8 years passed since this video and still happens😑
It's hilarious when the AC units get ripped off 😂😂😂
"Unsuspecting" truck drivers, huh? Those huge, flashing warning lights telling them they're too tall aren't enough?!
People run red lights all the time. Maybe we could spend Billions of dollars reworking them?
how bout people be smart and know how tall their vehicle is
Wreaking havoc on unsuspecting truck drivers?
They aren't paying attention! That's the problem!
As of now, the bridge was raised 8 inches.
Nope, as long as driver are ignoring the many warning signs this will continue to happen. Many drivers careers have been ended by this bridge because of stupid ignorance.
LOL he even sell the carmage as art .... man give me a break, this was hilarious !!!!.
Better if you play this video at half speed.
Can opener lol!!! For the happiness of body shops.
Good luck returning rental truck with security deposit
"unsuspecting"
You mean "people who can't read".
The sound the trucks make getting turned into convertables is very satisfying. My wife and I discovered the youtube channel the other evening....we sat for over an hour watching video after video cringing and laughing at the idiots who can't read the signs, haha.
The sound gives me a woody sometimes. 😊
Clarence thought he had clearance.
11-8 is famous. Should run for President.
Suggestion: In addition to the height warning, put "No Trucks" signs as well.
Because there are businesses on Peabody (The side street at the bridge) that get deliveries from trucks so the can't close the road to trucks.
I wonder how your state legally defines a truck. In most states, pickup trucks, vans and even smaller trucks like a typical UPS truck are not legally considered a "truck" under the law and would not be prohibited from driving under the bridge if they banned trucks. And any truck ban would be for the underpass only, not any other side streets.
They could possible put signs underneath the 11'8" sign with a large no truck symbol, with smaller text underneath saying "over 11'8"" so it technically only prohibits oversize vehicles. The purpose of these signs would be to catch the attention of people who don't realize how tall their vehicle is. The no trucks signs might make them think twice.
They need to measure tree limbs and put signs on those too! Trees are the real villains in the destruction of our majestic box trucks.
LazyOldMe RS I know what you mean. Poor trucks get scraped and their beautiful paint scratched by those damn tree branches.
“Unsuspecting” yeah how about ignorant? They could add sirens and people would still nail it.
"I thought I had enough clearance..." Oh yeah? how'd ya figure that?
There is another bridge on the same track, ¾ of a mile to the SW on South Roxboro St. that is even lower than this one. It gets hit nearly as much as "Canopener" but doesn't get any publicity since there is no camera there to record the action.
" I THOUGHT I HAD ENOUGH CLEARANCE" LMAO!!!
Drivers just following their GPS ..all thought and common sense out the window
They should know the height of their truck.
Even if they use a loud alarm before a truck passes, drivers will guess that this is train horn and "I have enough clearance" ...
When a guy hears "You won't fit", most of them will think it's a challenge. The issue is that pants stretch and bridges do not.... What, did you think that was going to be a sexual joke?
Do people really not check how tall their trailers are before renting them? Seems like something useful to know
