  • I modified the Ugears Sky Watcher Tourbillon table clock by adding a self-winding mechanism. Without this modification, the clock will only run anywhere from two to four hours after a full winding of the main spring.

PTFE was my thoughts too. But I bought the 3- in- 1 emulsion lubricant and applied it with a cotton swab. I also sanded all the part sheets while still secure on the sheets and before removing them. Then I sprayed both sides with Krylon translucent cedar. Then mounted the finished model onto an 8" round wooden plaque base to add stability. Beautiful. The Lego addition was cool, but I like it the way it is without electricity. Afterall, it was invented in France in 1801. They had a lot of wax but little electricity in those days. Cheers.

Thank you for your comments. Your build of Sky Watcher sounds very nice indeed.

I’m using graphite powder and water (very little) with a paint brush. Once it dries it’s almost like ice!

I loved this video!!!! I loved your voice/narration of the clock and it made me love this clock more! As a child, I loved gears and toys that involved exposed winding gears. I fell in love with cuckoo clocks and with their animation every hour at an early age. I'm now 53 years old, a firefighter/Paramedic for 28 years. I'm going to buy a 3D printer and also a laser cutter to explore things to build as a hobby to keep me busy once I can't hike the hills during wildland fire season here in California. I'm very crafty and handy, also understand how to make/build small things for fun...Later I plan on buying a CNC machine. I figure this clock will help me understand the mechanics of clocks etc. If not I love it !!!!!!!
I have some questions for you!! I understand if you are too busy to respond. This video was posted a while ago. Near the end of this video, you also mentioned the Ugears Aero clock runs 24/7 "All Year and keeps on tickin." (( I love that clock too.)) I plan on getting both.... Did you do the modification "self-winding/ servo" on the Aero clock? Are your wood gears wearing ou on both clocks? How much weight is in your sock for the Aero clock? I heard to much weight can warp the wood. My son is 14 and is learning to code in school - I plan on him doing your modification to the Sky-Watcher with an Arduino chip and a motor/ servo - 3d print the parts etc. Great vide - New follower!!!!!!

Hi Thro. Thank you very much for your kind comments. Also, thank you very much for your service as a firefighter and first responder.
Regarding the Aero Clock, I did not make any modifications to that one at all. As I mentioned in the video, though, I highly recommend using thin CA (Crazy Glue or other brand) as you assemble it. It needs the regidity this provides. The only problem with this clock is that I had to disable the little hot air balloon that goes up and drops down every hour. Otherwise this clocks runs great, but I do raise the weight twice a day.
I have to be honest that I am having trouble keeping my Skywatcher clock running reliably now. I do think the constant running has worn down the escapement gear a bit and it skips and hangs up. As I noted, I don't think this clock is meant for such constant running. However, as someone else noted in the comments, they coated the gears with lacquer or something like that. This might give the gears more life, but it might have unintended consequences as well. Regardless of all of this, I love the clock and might build another one some day.
Thank you again and good luck with your projects.
      Sincerely,
      Paul
