I was at this game in 1980, standing with the other Palace fans behind this goal. Only the referee and linesman didn't see a goal. Allen's shot was hit "too well" according to a smiling Jimmy Hill on MoTD. Hill was at the time the chairman of Coventry City and not exactly a neutral observer. After this incident clubs started hanging the back of the net from posts behind the goals rather than using stantions inside the goal itsef - at Bristol City they seem to use BOTH options.
An additional factor in deciphering this, is the body language: The keeper was dejected, dismayed and down on his knees with his back to the play, and the Coventry players stopped, the last defender kicked the ball out in solidary's sake of the truth and his good conscience. 2 CP's forwards basking in an initial celebratory arm raising gesture.

The referee glanced nervously at his linesman, who had no hesitation in signalling a goal, thereby sparking off five minutes and more of pandemonium as Forest players and officials fervently argued that the ball had not entered the goal. The side netting was checked for holes (that is for one big enough to allow the ball through!) while press photographers and even a St John’s Ambulance man, who had been stationed near the goal, were asked for their opinions! Same thing happened to me in a Floorball game. My team didn't have a regular goaly so we had to fill in. When it was my turn to be in goal in a game, the other team scored already after 50 seconds, but it bounced straight back so it was very difficult to see if it was a goal. I knew it was a goal but off course I didn't say that, because I didn't want a goal after just 50 seconds. We lost 12-6 anyway. That guy scored 7 goals afterwards so he didn't bother.
Even if that's what happened, you weren't the only victim of that happening at Highfield Road so it wasn't an unknown occurrance. the Referee and Linesmen would've been made aware of this before the game begun or even on the refereeing course the officials attend before their appointment Over The Line Sports
Reminds me of 8th January,1977 so 46 years ago when I went with Millwall to Highfield Road for a F A Cup match.. Coventry started to have a go at the small number of Millwall fans who held their own, and then , suddenly, the xxxx lights went on the Home fans when they saw or heard there were 3,000 more Millwall in an organized march from the train station:)
