Great to see you again! The doctors told me surfing made a a huge difference in making my heart surgery recovery so much easier (2 years ago now). Just turned 73 and no plans to quit but have to admit I'm not all that good. Still have fun on the smaller or inside Southern California waves. It's all about having fun isn't it? Look forward to seeing more as you're ready to post!
How do you do it at 73. I was surfing well at 50 but now at 60 and after a double hip resurfacing procedure because of arthritis I can hardly get to my feet off the floor let alone dropping into a decent wave.
@@mitseraffej5812 Sorry to hear about your arthritis. I've met a couple of guys in the water who've had hip replacements and they've chosen to belly board or one had a board made so he can ride on his knees. I count my blessings every day I've been given this chance! I hope you find a way to spend time in the water too!
Read your Post. Inspirational. I’m 51 recovering from knee surgery. I’ve been going to Bolsa Stn 17 for the last 6 months riding 9-0. It’s all about good waves, and good Bradduhs🤙🏾
Met a guy that was 66. He’s been surfing since he was my age. I’m 12. He was so nice helped me a lot. He even pushed me into the best wave of my life. Stay phsyced moe!
One of the coolest POVs ive watched. Congratulations on the sobriety/ and weight loss. I Will have 1 year sober this January. I try and surf regularly here in OC/ HB. Truly blessed .
It really opened my eyes. I ‘m 54 and weighs 230lbs. Always struggling with the board but the comment you gave really encouraged me to go for the volumes. Thanks!!
Seriously appreciate this post. Thanks brudduh for making it real and it seriously hit home.. exactly how I feel..but my major downfall and cause of the weight gain and loss of fitness was a chemical spill I stopped to help for. Took my lungs out..which put heavy strain on my heart, mind and soul.. I want so bad to get back on the water..if only just to paddle and get at least some exercise..I have always been a water brat.. so this video continues to inspire me. I've been trying to find a board or shaper to build me a long or short board but it's not an easy task I'm 275 now.. and I gotta get my assets in gear.. Finding a board that has huge volume that's 23' to 28" width without killing you when it comes to adding the volume making it super flippy is a nightmare.. and if I'm going for a nose rider or something fun for myself and my wife I need something that isn't so wide I can't paddle and can handle 430lbs
Thank you for this! After going on antidepressants 3 years ago I gained roughly 40 lbs! I was always about 115 - 120 only 5’ tall so at 155 I have been struggling with my smaller boards. I even went back to a 9’ foamie for a bit. Crazy the effect weight can have. I am currently weaning off and lost 10lbs already. Slow and steady!
Hey Gina, progress and weaning off of that takes time. Only been on ADs for about a year and currently struggling like it’s the end of the world! We’ll get it right though. Keep it up 👍🏻
Glad to see another iSurfTribe video. So I guess there's hope for me, as a heavier guy. Sorry for being a bad influence back in November, but that ice cream was awesome! lol
I,m sure i,m not alone in saying I would really like to see more of this style of video and for longer surf sessions...Your surfing, and your knowledgeable commentary over it have a refreshing smooth natural flow.
Great to be out in the water with you and hear your thoughts. Hope that other knee gets stronger for you. Exited for the new channel you have coming up. Sounds awesome!
Love the ONE TAKE shots, so much more honest and off-the-hip than most RUclipsrs. I appreciate that - refreshing. I'm definitely feeling the weight now that I'm late 30s. Early 30s I was right there with you at 210-215 and I've crawled up each year since till now. Definitely got the volume board to compensate - would love to see some videos on training and getting weight down naturally without much gym. I prefer the natural aerobics of activity for sure - I still feel super athletic, but all my weight gain is in my stomach area. The worst for me is denting my board on top with my knees doing bad pop-ups lol
Volume and pulling out a tiny bit of rocker with a wider tail on a 6’ 6 “ did me the best for Hawai’i waves in general up to a solid 6’ wave, twelve foot face. I’m 55 , 6’1” 240 lbs . I can’t duck dive a bigger board and can’t handle a bigger wave so all I can do is lose some weight.
I used to be 180 pounds but now 190, makes a huge difference, gonna start loosing weight to help my surfing and mobility improve and skating and life in general.
Aloha bradda, enjoy your videos and so true as we get older we get momona. So awesome all the information you give to make me want to get better. Mahalo
Nice one brother! I'm 54 and have put on a few kilos since covid. It's hard to get weight off and keep it off when you're over 40. You gotta still keep surfing though!
Good stuff as always. Over that last 2 years I lost about 27 lbs. I did it through diet change, and surfing more frequently. Since then, surfing stamina has gotten better, I’ve been able to progress in my surf much faster, and overall I feel great. It all starts with diet though, low sugar and low carbs, those two things can’t be hard on the body.
Great motivation. I’ve put on a about 15 pounds. My issue is my flexibility mostly in my hip flexors which affects my popup. Stoked to start going for it again!
Yew!!! Pura Vida, great info. Next boards I get are gonna have a bit more volume, i'll be 40 this year and Im not enjoying these lower volumed boards as much.
Tried to get back on a board this summer. Waves sucked here in South Carolina so not much success on two occasions. I used to surf a 6'2" and went to 7'. I Used to be 170lbs when I surfed 25 years ago, now 200lbs. I've been working out but the weight sucks. 14 years for me fyi!

I can tell by looking at the board when you're paddling, ducking, etc., that it really isn't a high volume board when compared to your weight. I'm guessing you're volume to weight ratio is close to the same when you were lighter. Regardless, I don't agree that experienced surfers will necessarily be happy increasing their prime volume/weight ratio. Higher volume boards are harder to duck and harder to turn, which means less fun if you're used to shredding. I would try a different shape before going up in volume. Also, if you're getting older, don't rush out and buy a high volume board because you had one bad day. That's just part of getting old, the next day you might own it again. -Just giving y'all a little different perspective.
I’m currently 220lbs and wanting to get into surfing. I have been looking into a big 6’5 fun fish to learn on. I know that I should be getting a 9 foot longboard but I know me and I know that I will want to get into more technical things fairly quickly. I grew up snowboarding and skating so I think that I will pick it up fairly fast once I learn how to get up. I just don’t want to spend the money on a 6’5 fish and be struggling because of my weight. I want to give myself a fair shot but I don’t want to be constrained to a giant long board.
I'm 51 and about 97kg. I surf badly about every 3-6 months. I live in Jakarta, and I go to Bali about twice a year. I get so frustrated with bad positioning, paddle speed, and an inability to catch waves.

I have a question as a bigger surfer (im around 240) I feel like my get-up is really odd. I feel like I cant fit my front leg under my chest because of my big gut. do you have a similar experience or do you have any tips for how to fix that?
I have seen some people do what you just described. Try making sure you peel your chest up and posture your head and chin high at the beginning and through the entire popup and never look down at your board during the popup. This will create a few extra inches of space and should help.
