I'm 37 started surfing 2 years ago(former boogieboarder) I've had a bit of success chicken wing the first is insane difficult for me at 6 foot 250lbs(50 percent fat 50 percent muscle)
@@fruitlove8842 yeah it takes months to learn I've popped up on maybe 4/5 waves total out of 80-100 waves in a year and half...I don't surf every day cause I live 1000 miles away from the Atlantic Ocean 2000 from Pacific
This is where I am at too. 57 and giving it a go. First outing I could control the board well enough, but the pop up was impossible. Practicing in my house in preparation for next time.
@glenvanhaeften4012 Are you still surfing? I just picked up a board for the first time ever at age 57. Teaching myself with an 8ft board but popping up seems impossible. I'll try this chicken wing method and hopefully that'll make a difference.
i went surfing yesterday, first time. i hit my head with the board, hit my chin with the board, and almost drowned four times. i am the best surfer ever...
The best surfers have the biggest smiles! Yup, its tough and I am glad. If it was easy there would be waaaaaay to many people in the water and the sport would die. But if you want it, if you love the water and if you are willing to transform your body, calm your mind and paddle out again... then maybe next time you will almost drown 2 times instead of4 ;)
coach brent I teach surf lessons in RI. this is the best pop up demo I have found thus far. Curling the toes, hand position, chest and head position. right on. I will be sharing it. Thanks
Complete newbie having real problems trying to haul my body up from prone. Love the look of the second type of pop-up - going to try that today! Thanks for the vid.
Hey man I am a USMC Vet dealing with PTSD. I used to surf when I was young living in Cali but now I'm in MD. I started surfing again this summer and it has really helpes calm me down and settle my mind and the PTSD. I wanted to start taking other Vets out next summer hoping other will get the same results, what are some boards that you'd recommend that I could buy for them to start out on that wont break the bank. Thanks, and your vids really helped shake the dust off
Thank you so much for the tips! Even on my first try of your version of the pop up I succeeded! For ages my instructor has said ' to place my hands on the rails and keep all my limbs in, but thanks to you guys I'm gonna be popping up like a pro (even though it can be proven difficult in England where I surf- the surfs always a bit choppy down here!) 🔥👊 THANKYOU!
Every thing you said don’t do I was doing brand new to surfing went out this morning and gave up after a hour came home. Found the centre of my board and just drew a straight line with some wax found the middle of my board where my foot should be going I was well out. Popping up with hands on the side going to change that in a couple of hours when I get back out there and hope I can stop doing what am not meant todo.. thanks for the advice am sure with watching this a couple more times I should be able to pop up later tonight for the 1st time
haha I was actually going for scorpions stance...but check out the video on stance...it clears things up a bit...this video has lots of great information, but was one of our first we ever did
Hi Laraine! Yes we do offer private coaching in two ways. First, in person in Costa Rica at Shaka Surf Camp, and second, our Surf Coaches website will very soon be offering a membership section of the site to allow us to be able to personally address your surfing questions via video analysis., Links to both sites are in the video description, RUclips doesn't allow posting them here. Hope to hear from you!
Great video. As an old and out of condition learner with a belly to work around, I really like the look of the " chicken wing ". I was flapping around on a 9ft foamie on my first lesson in choppy, messy white water yesterday and ended up on my knees most of the time. Popping up no real problem on the other occasion I had a go when I was young and slim, but time takes its toll! Until I get the pounds on and the fitness levels up, I may well try this one :-)
Which foot is in front is a matter of preference. some people stand left foot in front, some with their right. I like to ask people which way they would stand if they were to hit a baseball. I hit right handed, so I stand with my left foot forward because that is what I find comfortable. Also, if you have skateboarded, snowboarded, or wakeboarded before, your stance will most likely be the same.
brilliant - off to devon to try out my new board again this weekend. Just started surfing and cld pop up on a foamy but not on my new "proper" board. Think my arms too far forwards judging by this vid. thank u!
Thank for pointing out why my knee caps are sore and banged up after I go surfing. I clearly have my legs off to either side of the board. Gotta keep them together. Can’t wait to try on Saturday with my legs close together prior to pop up! Thank you for a great tutorial.
just got back from a surf trip. got some lush waves, but struggled for the most part due to not popping up effectively. Very helpful. Wanna go back out there now!! :(
I just started back surfing after not being on a board for 20 years. After getting dumped numerous times today I am glad I found this video to relearn. Gonna try the chicken wing for sure
What's the problem with grabbing onto the rails & pushing up from there (like the 1st & 3rd kid did it)? I just had 2 lessons on an 8" board and it worked great for me.
Hey thanks alot for this video but does it matter what foot is out front, like in this video your left foot was out front does it matter if you change this. Or if its easier to understand the facing left or right of the board
Thanks man this is really helpful, where in Costa Rica is this? I live in San José and i'm looking for beaches to surf with a friend. Anyways, thanks for the info!
Your chicken wing is a saviour. Struggled for 5 years with my pop up. Killing my big toe each session. I hate the name but the technique sure works and my surfing has taken off (literally) ever since.
3:17 That's a great example of how it should be done. The head barely moves and continues to look up. Most of the "push" comes from the arms and shoulders - the rest of the body is just putting itself into position. (You'll know when you aren't pushing hard enough off your arms because your head dips down and your arse goes up in the air. )
Hi, I have got to the stage of popping up fine and turning on a long board... However, how can I do big, quick zig zags up and down the wave as I'm going along ? :)
Good stuff man. Videos like this have helped me a lot with surfing. I went through a bit of a regression and videos like this helped me work my way through. Thanks!
i definitely wont say that my methods are the cut and dry only way, but i personally have never seen anyone have much success using their knees during the pop up. i personally teach people to not use their knees ever during the pop up.
Excuse me mr. Surf coaches dude. My brother taught me a way of popping up where your feet are together and off the tail of the board, and you pop up using your knees and hands instead of your feet. Would this work for just short boarding or is it a good pop up for any sized board
hey one question, so there are 2 different pop ups.... if we stand on a shortboard or on a funboard, which pop up is better for learning and for the different types of waves and boards? Waiting for an answer :)
+Needs more Flash !!!! Started surfing over summer for the first time and I was 19. Now I'm 22 and just getting into it! Just surfed with a guy in his 50s/ 60s today !
Um I wanna try surfing sum day soon but live on the east coast of connecticut highest waves I've seen where like probably like 3 ft maybe at a place called misquamicut beach in Rhode Island but what would be somthing that would help my skills if need for surfing on the water I got round here? Like skim boarding or sumshit not o familiar wit water sports lol
Hello at 3:16 seconds you can see that your hands are too far forward. They should be closer to your hip so that your forearm and bicep make a 90 degree angle at your elbow. This allows the force you apply to be fully utilized (force is scaled down by sin(theta) where theta is the nagle between your bicep and elbow. With your position, it looks like you are at about 45 degree angle which means that you are wasting about 30% of the energy being used to push yourself up.
what he means is "check 3:15-3:25, in fact stop it at 3.18 mid-popup where you've done a knee pushup: if your board is too short for your feet to be on it, you will obviously just be using your hands and knees for this popup. Is it ok to not use my feet when I'm on a big board too so I don't need to have 2 different popups?" The answer : " yes, if you can popup like that on a short board, it's going to be easy for you to do it on a longboard. These popups are for beginners and longboarders"
ive been surfing for over 45 years....ive always stood up using the 1st method but now im in my 50's im not so nimble and flexible so im noticing that im doing the ''chicken wing'' now! (but i can still surf better than most) hell yeah!
I have a question. i Have only surfed once but it was on a heavy windsurfing board and the first few waves i caught but after that the nose of the board kept going under the water and throwing me forward. How do i stop the nose from going into the water?
+jordan chorlton It means your weight is too far forward and your dipping over the nose, try leaning back a bit further before you pop and it will stop the nose from getting dragged under.
+jordan chorlton also your need to have enough forward momentum just like a speed boat when the nose rises into the air the same thing will happen on your board when u have enough speed
Thanks. As an older guy (almost 55), the chicken wing looks great. I've never seen it before, and using the regular foot has been getting more difficult. Again, thanks.
jason tran its ok if your fingers are over the rails, but you just don't want to physically grab onto the sides of the board...usually when people do this, it causes them to want to "pull" themselves up the board (usually onto the knees) instead of pushing and popping up...also, the point of rolling your chest is to posture yourself up, to get some separation off the board for your legs to come underneath you.
Please! help me with that! I bought a Shortboard (6,1ft).. I'm not a beginner, I surfed a bit before with a longboard and I was popping up using my knee. I sold my longboard to buy my short one, the problem I have with the popup technique is that my toes doesn't touch the board tail, all the youtube videos are made on a longboard, how can this be executed on a shortboard? Hope you can help me, I'm really frustrated
Bit of a "mind blown" moment here about grabbing the rails... That is just so intuitive but the way you explain it makes it seem less so. Even if you're pretty set on a technique it's always handy to add more moves to your skillset. So what's the difference between surfcoaches.com and shaka?
When I'm at the beach I watch the experienced surfers and they seem to do something that is a half-way house between these two methods - like a very fast chicken wing approach, or a slowish jump up. The back foot is certainly planted before the front foot anyway.
Yes... It is exactly like so... Pro surfs usually do a fast chickenish movment... Try jump on ur shorty with both feets on a 4 meter wave...lets see what happens :)
When you're a beginner it's better to do it the way the teacher says in this video. Otherwise, beginners tend to hold on that rail with their hands which break the momentum of the pop up and they end up falling aside while not even stood up. With the width of the longboard its better to lay your hands flat and push from there if you're a beginner.
trying to think of it I really don't know what pop up method I use. I just know I need to get up and next thing I know I'm up. I remember when popping up was such a difficult hurdle for me to overcome...
I'm an older guy trying to progress to a short board. I can catch waves and ride a long board but I realized I rely on the leverage off my toes to help pop up. Doesn't work for a short board. Oddly, the chicken wing seems to help popping up on my short board on land. I can lock the ball of the foot into the footpad for leverage. But I'm wondering if the bent knee would create drag? Anyone try it? I live 4hrs from the ocean and can't try it water at the moment. Thanks
David Cox well in reality, our knee isn't really in the water...when you plant your back foot and begin to push up, your knee will begin to come underneath you, and once you get the technique down, it becomes so fast that it is almost a blend between to two styles of pop ups....put your board on your bed and try it!
Surf Coaches Thanks for the response. The method works great for me with the board on a yoga mat. Looking forward to actually trying it in the waves next week.
I know the guy said not to do that but say the wave is big and your not holding your board it can sometimes sweep out from under you so I sometimes hold the rail if I can feel or see that the wave is bigger.
Hi there. Really good video. I can see now why I couldn't stand up on the surfboard, cause my hands were on the rail and every time I wanted to stand up my hands slipped on the side of the board And I ended up into the water. Other thing my legs were way to open so ended up with my knees rushed :-( and I actually blamed my wetsuit that is short legs and arms but I can see that is not the problem. The only thing that I would like to ask for is how to control the surfboard in the water. I was kind of panicking of how to handle/control the surfboard, I was scared of being hit by the board when the waves came to me. I didn't hold it really tight at the beginning so I alway loose it from my hands .
In response to Chad the great surf coaches comment. Sir you should have sent that msge in private instead of calling the guys out. Granted I surf a 10'8 sup, but still enjoy learning techniques just in case. These guys are the best I have found, not only great instructions but cool videos (having Meagan on helps lol) simple methods etc so guys at surfing coaches keep up the great job from Tampa . If you are ever in Tampa hit me up at good vibes sup I'll have sups for ya.....good vibes
Hamizah Jamal I would recommend trying them both...for some, one method works better, for others, the chicken wing...experiment and find which is right for you!
Surf Coaches Ok so my question is :- Why do new surfboards always feel weird to ride? My last board I was super comfortable with but this new board is like i'm learning all over again.
The second technique helped me so much .. 57yrs starting surfing .. thanks for the video .. well explained .. well demonstrated.

Practice more on land! And slow down your pop up a bit in the water. Concentrate on doing it correctly and not quickly!
Will try that route rather, tried the get up quick this weekend, failed less than first time but still tumbled🤙

okay thanks i thought it was because i wasn't on the centre line of the board.
+jordan chorlton also your need to have enough forward momentum just like a speed boat when the nose rises into the air the same thing will happen on your board when u have enough speed
eliot468 Thanks, i now have a proper surf board and i think i can go faster on it.
Thanks. As an older guy (almost 55), the chicken wing looks great. I've never seen it before, and using the regular foot has been getting more difficult. Again, thanks.

trying to think of it I really don't know what pop up method I use. I just know I need to get up and next thing I know I'm up. I remember when popping up was such a difficult hurdle for me to overcome...
Great video thanks :)
Hey. Could I just ask how many feet is that board? thanks
Jack O'Neill 9'4. Trust me
thanks!
Most accurate one I've seen.
love it
So helpfull !!
Nice!
two of those kids grabbed the rail when getting up :(
I know the guy said not to do that but say the wave is big and your not holding your board it can sometimes sweep out from under you so I sometimes hold the rail if I can feel or see that the wave is bigger.
The teacher is wrong. The kids do the right move.
I didn't hold it really tight at the beginning so I alway loose it from my hands .
thank you! very helpfull :)
thanks bro.
COSTA RICA AYYYYEEEE!! pura vida mae
Hey Thanks! I will actually be in Tampa for a Rays Game (I'm from Brandon originally) in May...lets SUP!!
Chad sounds like a plan, hit me up on facebook ( Yen Loyola or GoodVibesSup ) ill have a board for ya....good vibes
Why is It wrong tô grab the rails when popping up?
Would you recommend the first pop up method or the chicken wing method for beginners?
Hamizah Jamal I would recommend trying them both...for some, one method works better, for others, the chicken wing...experiment and find which is right for you!
The chicken wing works better for me and I feel like a it's a bit easier for beginners to do idk just my opinion
Surf Coaches Ok so my question is :-
Why do new surfboards always feel weird to ride? My last board I was super comfortable with but this new board is like i'm learning all over again.
Raughing outRoud how long is your board and what kind of waves are you rideing
chicken wing is better for shorter boards and the first one is better for longboards
Uau, thanks, you save my surf.
