- This video is a timetravel back to the first thing I made in my workshop. And the first build I recorded, that I finally got around to editing.
As per request here’s a written down list of tools I used:

Not at all. A professional could do it as well. It really just depends on what a person is doing.
Starting out all a person would need is the basic tools I listed. I have been at woodworking since I was a young child and could easily get away with just Chisels, hand Saw and Bench Plane. I could make anything with those basic tools.
Yeah, of course you are right. I meant it in a way that with machines you can do some things way quicker and thus - can make a living out of it. Surely there is a niche, but in general you can’t rely solely on hand tools to put food on the table. I was just being cynical I guess. Doing work with hand tools only is beautiful ☺️

I must add a few of my favorite features in the final video: the Brazilian style music in the middle - very smooth, the shaving waterfall - quite nice to have a moment to appreciate for the aesthetics alone and the leg trimming magic - great fun. I’m thinking of making a „workshop tour” someday - when I set it up in a new location. I don’t think it’s „viewers demand” but I like watching those from others, so... Might try. After all it’s all about inspiration for others, even if it’s just one tiny bit of a tip to improve something :)

Thanks! I did’t have a cut sheet at all - I just winged it and as far as materials list goes - just buy some 2x4s. Really, I’m not trying to be a smart-ass. Thanks for posting this, I don't care for power tools so I am always looking for hand tool only content. I'm less interested in speed and more in just having fun with the process. Really nice video. Great looking bench. One tip for mortise and tenons. Cut the tenon first and then use marking knife to size tenon to mortise.

About the M&T - that’s exactly how I did that, it’s just that I was too conservative with clearing the first mortise. But the order was just like you said ☺️

Cool build! I really like the way you cut those two legs to length using only a measuring tape. Such skill! I keep telling myself that I will build something using only handtools. Cool to see you accomplish that. I‘ll give a go one of these days.

Dude that encouraging cause it's something I plan to be doing. I did have a question about the purpose behind the gutter down one side. My guess is clean up and putting tools there for easy use but wasn't sure.
You hit the nail on the head! It’s called tool well - I left the sides open on purpose - easy clean up as you said ☺️

Należy Ci się uznanie za wykonaną pracę :-) W ubiegłym roku zbudowałem swój pierwszy solidny stół (wg. projektu P. Sellers'a) i wiem ile czasu oraz energii potrzeba na taką realizację. A i tak uważam, że miałem o tyle łatwiej, że budując ze sklejki miałem było mniej krawędzi do strugania. Choć to co zostało, strugało się o wiele gorzej :-) Pozdrawiam i wszystkiego dobrego w nowym roku :-)
Dzięki :) Przez jakiś czas zastanawiałem się nad sklejką, ale raz że właśnie bałem się strugania, a dwa - ręcznie to bym się chyba pochlastał rozcinając arkusze :D
@@BlankPlank Gdybym miał ciąć sklejkę ręcznie, to w ogóle bym się nie podjął tej realizacji. W moim wypadku sama część robocza stanowi 21 sklejonych ze sobą na sztorc pasków :-D Do tego dochodzi po 5 warstw na nogi, itp. Pociąłem to na niewielkiej pilarce stołowej, a po sklejeniu strugałem piąteczką :-) W sumie poszły 3 arkusze z niewielkim odpadem. Ale fakt faktem struganie sklejki do czystych nie należy. Dlatego uważam, że Twoja wersja podczas tworzenia była bardziej satysfakcjonująca :-)
struganie jak najbardziej było przyjemne, a tarzanie się w świerkowych strużynach i nagrywanie slo-mo tym bardziej :D

I gotta say man. I make and sell laminated workbenches. And some people, including myself. Prefer a soft wood bench. I do, and I make them on a regular basis. And though I have a shop full of power tools. Ireach for my hand tools more often. (Well except for milling) hahaha
Yeah, milling is tough. I just bought new planer/thicknesser combo 😁 But the rest of the work - sweet sweet pleasure 😎 The quietness, the workout, the reward after... Shop full of tools is just for looks, we need just a few 🤣

That's some very impressive sawing. I use that same Gyokucho saw and my sawing is not half as accurate.
Not all cuts were like the ones I showed 😁 And for me the marking and scribing lines is the most crucial element of preparing for a straight cut 👍

That's a real beauty of a W/bench my bro. Well built and with hand tools..What NO. plane ws the u used to flatten the top and bottom of the bench top?? Is that a NO.5 Jack?? Is that called a Scrub plane too?? I'm new to hand planes. I bought a low angle block, a NO.3 & No.4 planes. I think the 3 & 4 planes are too similar. Is that correct? What is the difference between a smoothing or finishing plane??
I've only really begun to learn about Hand planes over the past month and I love working with them. I get real enjoyment from getting a flat level face and clean edge on boards with the planes. There's a real satisfaction to working this way imho. I lok forward to sharpening the Irons now too. I use the marker to blacken the edge and I can see which direction I moving the iron on the diamond stones. My planes are cheap ones. I think all 3 cost m,e less than 80 EUROS TOGETHER. For me I've been learning more by learning how to get the flat sole, how to check the Frog, etc and it's a nice feeling to be ale to get a cheaper plane to work perfectly..
Thanks for this top video bro. I enjoyed watching the process. I built my 1st bench using MDF 18mm x 2 sheets for the top, laminated but there's way too much bounce. The weight isn't good with my bench either. It moves too easily. I really want to build one like ur one here.
My chiseling work has to improve and I will need to get better chisels down the line. I only have a really cheap 7 chisel set from MAGNUSSON. They're ok for light work but I've found them a struggle going into bigger timber. I keep them sharpend all the time but I think I should not have put the 2ndary bevel on them.

Considering the real soft wood.
I would've made the top and legs more substantial. To compensate for the light wood.
The whole thing is everything but light :D I also put a tool chest under the top - it’s massively heavy now :)

I didn’t apply finish and I don’t really plan to - i like the raw look, and the wear it takes during use. If I ever make a workbench from beech I will definitely finish it :)

Bo świerk jest bardziej miękki i mam wrażenie, że bardziej sęczny. I lżejszy zdaje się też. Takie najpośledniejsze drewno jak dla mnie... Tak, 45x95 chyba to było. Z 30-40 mb, nie pamiętam już niestety, bo to budowa z 2019 roku w zasadzie :) Możesz spróbować policzyć z filmu :p
Do you find that the spruce is heavy enough in the finished bench? Or does it move across the floor during certain operations? I used spruce for my English workbench and it definitely moves with harder tasks.
I was actually quite sprucerized how heavy the finished bench was :) Nevertheless I did weigh it down with a custom chest of drawers full of tools

Yeah, of course there is glue :) otherwise it wouldn’t hold at all :)

wont the stretchers prevent the top from expanding or contracting
They probably will, but given the cross section of the top it’s not that big a deal (it’s not that wide + 2x4s are „half a log” if you know what I mean). So far it’s all holding together and STURDY - that was the goal. It’s working fine since the middle of 2019 ☺️ But I totally get it - I had that same concern when building 😉
Pro tip drill the knot out and then fill it with a dowel.

May I ask a technical question? Before you glue the 2x4s to make the surface of the workbench, what is the goal of planing the 2x4s if you are going to plane again after gluing? Thanks!
Good question :) It was so long ago I had to really think about this 😁
Planing individual 2x4s is easier for big material removal - and that’s what removing the roundovers was all about. If I did a better job, the planing after glue up would be minimal. But it wasn’t too bad either. I guess you could plane everything when glued, but from a perspective of a somewhat experienced woodworker that I am now - that route was easier ;)

What is the final table height?
Do you have rods connecting the two tool well pieces with the rest of the table?
I can check the height tomorrow, but it should be suited for your needs. If you plan to do some heavy planing on it - it should be lower, for fine joinery and delicate work - higher. Do some mock-ups and try for yourself :)
There are no rods, just the dowels, but that’s for registration purposes only. Basically all construction is visible in the video :)
Dowel is what I meant. Still learning the terminologies. Haha. So the only dowels are between the two tool well pieces then! Got it!

Thanks for the feedback. Sometimes I edit the video to fit a beat or a song - helps me figure out transitions and gives a better feeling. But I have a plan for a musicless one - solid wood door build - stay tuned :)
