- Today is all about Scart. I review the Shinybow SB 5525 Scart Matrix and do a full on retro corner video setup. I demonstrate how i set up everything for 'Nostalgia Time' and how the Shinybow Scart Matrix has made things much easier for me with its high quality inputs and two dual outputs.

Spent years looking for a decent multi-SCART adaptor in the '90s, but they always either made the picture darker, or blurrier. Drove me absolutely nuts! I won't even go into the fact a lot of them weren't even RGB SCART, yet never told you on the box.
Now, I'd get a SCART > HDMI adaptor, and run it through a multi HDMI adaptor.
One of my pet peeves is scart switchers/adapters or cables which are not RGB.. i literally dont see the point to that! it's almost made me repel when i see anything labelled as "AV"
I would do the HDMI multi adapter but that would mean having to get lots of upscalers for my setup ;o))
I still need to get a decent upscaler though that supports both RGB and Svideo.
I think the whole market believed people would only wanted a SCART box to plug their VHS player in, would a few extra pins really have broken the bank for them?
The £20 SCART > HDMI upscalers on eBay are really good, I use one on my Mega Drive, and is so nice, it looks like it's being emulated. (it's the one in the metal square box - don't touch the plastic ones with the blue writing, they're bloody AV)
If I had the know-how, I'd totally pitch a multi SCART > HDMI adapter/upscaler on Kickstarter, surely there's demand for one?
A lot of those cheaper AV2HDMI type boxes on ebay are rubbish. The one Maddie has which is the same as mine is the first I found that didn't destroy the image. Sure you could put one of these on each source and then run it through an HDMI switcher but it would be cost prohibitive.
@Larry Bundy Jr
I really dont think it even cost that much more to connect all the pins, these days they go all out with HDMI leads that cost £100+ with gold contacts, probably diamond encrusted plug to make those 1s and 0s do their thing better, so not sure why they didnt pay that 10p extra to for those few extra pins.. (actually, only 4 were needed for RGB and sync)
There's gotta be a demand for one...Imagine if this Shinybow had a decent upscailer built in and a third output as HDMI. It would literally be perfect| Actually i'm not sure why these Retro scart matrix makers (Hydra scart etc) dont actually do that.
The upscaler, i think you'e talking about the flylink one, the one i have too, i've been using this for two years now, they're literally the best you can get in this price range
www.amazon.co.uk/Flylink-Converter-Upscaler-Coaxial-Consoles/dp/B00W9DJMNC/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1537957750&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=flylink+hdmi+scart&psc=1
A really great scaler is something like teranex from blackmagic. its an anything to anything scaler. I used this at work and I've always had good results. Not cheap and need some converters for scarts etc. but great picture. as for cheap scart switchers vs good ones. they used to only wire up CVBS and L/R audio and switch the ground lines via a single pole switch (often a rotary). this is a nasty way as you get cross talk (much like your original one Maddie). newer ones switch whole plugs or opto-isolate so there isnt any crosstalk.
Lemon, thanks for posting this! I had fun watching it last night, keep up the great work!
MsMadLemon, we love you!
We have the same HD upscale box. Added a fan to mine to keep it cool. My switcher however, is an ebay, plastic 3way, cheepo one. The Shinybow looks very cool. Cool setup.
Your setup gets constant upgrades and changes, for sure!
Four Amigas ready to play at the touch of a button and a swipe of a slider, I bet this setup would've blown the mind of a young teenage Madija if she could've had a glimpse of the future.
Great video as always, I'm already looking forward to Retro Corner Setup 2019 where you have another few systems to integrate and have to upgrade the ShinyBow to an Extron Crosspoint 😀
Marc
Marc, if Teenage Madija saw a glimpse of this she would somehow acquire the ability to climb ceilings in excitement. The Amiga I had back then was a dream Amiga i built.. but the setup i have now is a dream setup!
And thanks Marc! :o)
this was a good video. i need that Shinybow !
I really love the retro corner!
Great review thanks! I have started using Scart (to HDMI) for my pal based Amigas the past couple of months, and after trying it out on one of my Demo C64s at VCFMW 13 (US). I am hooked on it. Such a much nicer display even being a NTSC based C64 then my VGA converters. So your review of this SCART switcher comes at a great time :-) As want to get 2 more of my C64's using Scart too.
Yeah, I was looking forward for this one quite a lot! :D
Awesome stuff lem that scart adaptar box is super handy to have :) like u said its not too big either i have an older scart box thing here and its massive hahaha.
I love when you laugh. It makes me smile 😀
meh , huh. i just found the exact same Bandridge switcher in a thrift-store for 5 euro's, and now you come show us this freakin' nice thang. darned!
dont get me wrong i am glad that you are glad, but aarch! now i have to find that thing also. lol. no just jokin' but yes i did find and got the bandridge.
i was less lucky with the scart to HDMI upscaler though. i bought one over here in the NL, but that did not work with the amiga signal. i really have to get the same brand as yours.
yes!!! moooore computers and consoles. more more more! 😆👍
nice video as always, thank you Maddi.😉
Teatime with You is the Best!! 😄😄😄!!! Muchas Gracias
The best SCART multi adaptors I ever had were the powered 4 way auto switches that Maplins stopped selling around 15 years ago, all sockets fully RGB wired, zero quality loss, zero interference. I wish I'd purchased more than 2 of them when I had the chance, they never come up on eBay :(
Uhhhhh instant subscribe.
Do you do any twitch streaming of retro games as well?
Hell yes at everything here.
Thank you! I dont do twitch streaming, but I stream every now and then here.. I also have a playlist of gameplays which I'm getting back into doing.

@@MsMadLemon awesome, and awesome video.
Your laughter is infectious and this video helped a lot. I'm glad there's no signal degradation on the Shinybow. I mostly need it as a matrix switcher but I'm happy to see that it works well daisy chained with other units as well!
Can't wait to see more from you. :)
My Hydra does have a manual override, there's buttons to go an input to the left or the right :-)
There is? I watched a couple of reviews and there was no mention of it, i'm glad to hear that there is! At least there is more option for scart switchers :o)
Best nails in retro 👌💐🎂
Great device, especially for you. :o) And scart inputs for future systems is not the only thing you're running out of. The tables are densely populated, lol..! It doesn't get much nerdier than this!! ^_^
Lol! yeah its pretty much full.. everything has been tetris'd like crazy, its at a point now where systems have to be taken off temporarily for other systems to be put there :o))
And thats just half the computers and consoles i have now, when I said "no more systems" .. I ended up with a couple more (upcoming at some point).. things are gonna get nerdier lol!
How do you record a CRT display without getting scrolling raster banding on the video? Any time I've tried, I cannot find any shutter speed setting that will not pick up some amount of banding. Recording from an LCD monitor is alright, but my C64 has a 1702 CRT monitor, or alternatively is hooked up to the big CRT TV.
The shutter speed you set to 50 (for 50hz) or 60 for 60hz.. and for the Moire effect if you get any, you need to very slightly unfocus it. and it should be good.
I mess around with the PVM more in this video and later try learning how to film it but i finally got it.

I really dig that groovy VU meter shirt. Nearly matches the Akai R2R somehow.
Love that amiga cd32 sound :-)
I want a Retro corner update!
Your upscaler (same as mine) seems to have a really quick shut off of the on screen display. Mine takes about a minute before it disappears! That's a nice amount of kit set up now though.
I have two upscalers like this, one (for some stupid reason) keeps teh display on for ages, this one didnt so i used it. It's very annoying, i'm not sure who's idea it was to keep it on that long!! There must be a hack somewhere for that.
I think you can understand the reason for this particular scart matrix now can't you :o)
Oh yeah! I just searched for it on shinybow's website but its rarer that rocking horse poop. Even ebay is dry. Oh well. I might just be able to scrape by with inputs on the TV, the older scart box and the scaler if I'm clever about input choice.
There are other Scart matrix' made too like that hydra scart which looks very nice however it's automatic only, which is literally the only reason i didn't go for it: retrorgb.com/scartswitches.html
And they only seem to have 1 output too :o( .. I really hope this video inspires someone who makes these, I tried to give subtle hints lol
I route everything trough my HK247 receiver, it has loads of analog inputs, it has somewhat lag, but it works.
I've had one of these for a few years. I changed from the 4x2 to the 6x2. It does make things a lot easier having a switcher which outputs 2. I can play on a CRT from one output and capture/stream via an upscaller/ossc with the other.
I've actually got the OSSC going through a HDMI splitter so I can get 3 outputs really.
What upscaler do you have? The OSSC does not like the C64 at all.
unfortunately that's because the OSSC doesnt support Svideo apparently, i was about to get the OSSC until I heard this.. this sucks OSSC needs Svideo support! I'm not sure why they didnt!
I've got a composite to scart RGB convertor which makes the picture very good, but OSSC still doesn't like it. Apparently the C64 vertical sync is way out of standard spec, or something. It's a shame, after working so much to get my C64 working, and it being my childhood computer, I want to show it off, but I'm not able to.
Thanks for sharing Maddi, might have to save my pennies to get one of these (maybe the 4x2 as i'm dasychaining several switchboxes already)
There's no such thing as "too many systems" I'm on 28 at the moment with most hooked up and ready to play.
cool!! all they all RGB?
Yes they're all RGB, Svideo etc
Yes
Interesting, I actually thought you were already doing it that way. Like playing on the C64 or Amiga on the Flatscreen while the same signal would go into the PMW CRT as well, where the shown picture would be captured by the DSLR Camera. Never thought you always played the HDMI out signal from the DSLR on the flatscreen. That video delay must have been insane to cope with when playing games like Batman the movie where precision is everything :O
Do you have a link of where you got the scart matrix?
I had to contact shinybow themselves, there is a US seller which i've linked in the video description, but Shinybow themselves accept a weird payment which was a pain.
Hi Maddie.... your setup is delicious.
very cool vid. i subscribed
Hi, I would like to purchase Shinybow Matrix Switcher soon for use with Playstations mostly. There is very little info about it online from retro consoler users. Have you encountered any problems while using it? Signal degradation, lost of signal ect ? Do you know any sourse of info where to look for such info ? Thanks in advance or your reply !
Hi, My personal experience, i've not had any trouble with it and not noticed any signal degradation, it's pretty much solid and has worked flawlessly as you'd expect it would, ever since I got it and still going strong, the build quality is solid.
Is your unit still working well?
Yeah it's still going strong, it's solid.
I'd be interested to know how much lag there is. Had a cheap upscaler that added about a full second of lag. It made gaming frustrating
A friend of mine gave me an audio-video-processor from here famous maker "Vivanco" which got these cool faders with switches with handles for this cool transition-overlapp-effect. You could regulate luminance, sharpness, and so on with seperate knobs. It had 2 scart-inputs and 1 output, BNC and svideo I/Os and so on. Unfortunately it broke only a week later (got weird artifacts on the output), so I dumped it. Was the time, before I disassembled things to see, whats wrong. Actually I'd say, that I could fix it. It was a Vivanco VCR 3044 btw. Was quite expensive back in the day, so I never replaced it...
Interesting, I didn't even know Shinybow made a SCART matrix! Their stuff is usually very high quality (their SCART-to-component converter is pretty much the best available new). I didn't see it explicitely mentionned in the vid, but : is the output of the Shinybow as clean as the Bandridge's? (did you A/B them?)
i didnt until about a year ago, i've been wanting this ever since! I havent done a side by side comparison of them, thats one thing i should have done actually!
Your setup is connected to switchers nicely now. Everything is ready to go without deplugging stuff. And hey, the Bandridge proves to still be useful! Btw I crack up everytime you flail your arm when excited, hahaha
Hi MS Lemon, please help me with one doubt about this Scart switcher. It will support Scart with C-Sync connections? Recently my Scart switcher got broken but that model never supported my C-Sync 1chip SNES, so I hope this one will work.
HI Juan, actually thinking of it i'm not certain, everything I have uses sync on composite, but not Composite sync I dont think. The Amiga computers are capable of Csync output as they have H sync and V sync for VGA, but I think through the scart they use sync on composite. I don't have a SNES to try this with. Sorry i couldnt iron out that doubt.
@@MsMadLemon I see :( thanks a lot girl
@@juanjoserivasgarcia2336 If I ever find out, I will certainly come back here and reply :o)
@@MsMadLemon Thanks a lot, you are a good lemon :)
you use an amiga power on your c64 ? or did i hear that wrong ?

Hi Mohammed
That device is the SIDbox and a friend of mine is currently developing it, i'm part of the team as a tester, I find bugs and present new ideas for it too, which is why i have one. They're not on sale yet as they're still in development but hopefully they will be soon :o)

@@MsMadLemon Thank you, it sounds really sweet :)
@@MsMadLemon Also I ordered that same switcher (well the 4x2 bcuz I'm poor and living in a 3rd world country ^^;;) I'm so excited to get mine ASAP, that's why I'm watching this review again :3
@@gordyowl9455 nice! It's by far the best switcher I've come across. Just works perfectly :o)
First! 😀
And now I want a DB meter shirt too... Why do you do these things to me?? :-)
I'm suffering myself wanting to get all this stuff...so i gotta share it. ;o))
Yes I know, these scart switches are stupid expensive.
First :) Helou ...
discord light theme???
60$ shipping???Wtf
Shipping to and from the US seems to be very expensive for some reason!
such split boxes are easy to degrade image quality!
$180?! Thanks but, no thanks. IMO, that's too much for a scart switcher.
