I think this is one of my favorite videos from you, it reminds of some games played by Kasparov where there is no counterplay at all! Thanks for sharing!

Funny how in the end opponent was basically wrapped in a small package, move by move. Thanks for the video, KC!

By the way: Trompowsky was a brazilian player....Some books say he was an obscure player, and they do not mention that he was brazilian but also a very strong player back in his time (1920')

I was smashed as a junior by this guy. I didn't get to castle either.

The Trompowsky Raptor variation, eh? I find this opening very interesting.
Instructive in many ways and rich in strategy as well as tactics.
At first I was inclined to immediately blame Hebden for not activating his dark-squared bishop when he had the chance.
But I realize now that he was probably aiming for the queenside castles from early on. And that the raptor partly forced him to do so.
Usually it seems to me that most impressive wins involving exquisite-looking forcing sequences, dazzling sacs, etc. can be traced back to some original blunder or general pathetic play from the victim.
I like this game because I cannot pinpoint such a cause for Hodgson's brilliancy.

I wonder just how good JMH would have become had he continued playing chess.Delightful game.

Hi Andrew, this is the man himself writing:)) - I would say I was at my absolute peak in 1999 when I was already 36 years old. After that I started teaching chess in schools and by the time I stopped playing competitively in 2003 at the age of 40 the teaching chess in schools had really taken over my entire life.
So in answer to your question I was only going to go steadily downhill from there on in - time takes no prisoners!
When I played in Groningen in 1994 my wife told the great Bosnian legend Ivan Sokolov that I didn’t study chess to which Ivan replied’’ You are ether lying or Julian is very stupid’’
My wife wasn’t lying which is why I played relatively unstudied openings like the Tromp - my black opening repertoire was basically non - existent.
Deep down I knew to compete at the absolute elite level I would have to have studied incredibly hard which is something I was never prepared to do as I felt I think on a sub-conscious level my nerves simply couldn’t have coped with playing chess at the very very top.
BTW thank you for the kind words about the game - it was one of my all time favourites:))
