I like it, instead of forgiving him for doing wrong without any regret or signs of repentance, they actually do make him face punishment for his deeds. It's refreshing when it seems like so much media these days focuses on forgiveness, even when unearned.

First off, it's amazing that THIS is where Jim Cummings started his voice acting career.
Second, this series seems like a prime candidate for a Disney+ release.
Personally, I'd rather have it on DVD.

The way Dumbo's nose moves is unsettling and I can't really explain why.
The eyes, and the movement of the characters is visually uncanny. Avoided the show as a kid. Like Chuck E. Cheese creepy. Btw cool first name.
Off-putting is being overly polite. This could be released as horror without changing anything.

I was thinking that this was the first TV series I ever saw, as it came out when I was 2, but then I remembered that we couldn't afford to pay for Premium channels like Disney, & I most likely watched the reruns in the early 90s when the channel switched to a basic model with commercials in a few states.
I haven't forgotten this show! I watched this as a kid as much as I watched Welcome to Pooh Corner!
For me, the "Oh dang, I do remember this!" came somewhere between the theme song (which promises "Lots of good adventures" and I remember kid-me always thinking, "Just 'good'? Not 'great'?"), the cat lady's greenscreen tightrope act, and Dumbo's whirly eyes, twirly little trunk, and stuffy-nosed voice (still less terrifying than live-action Night King eyes Dumbo).
There's so much shit I forgot seeing as a kid that it's amazing that I do remember it after watching reviews and episodes from TV shows
I find it interesting that Disney doesn't just dump all of these old shows onto Disney+, I could understand them not wanting to spend money converting it to HD but I don't see why they just don't put it on as is.
Some of these old shows are just not very good by modern standards. A bit embarrassing. Not all shows age well.
@@Attmay I'd be surprised (with my admittedly lacking knowledge in video production from the 80s) if they weren't recording the show onto film as opposed to tape, which is much easier and cheaper to digitize and release in an HD format.

@@daredrogers3884 All the ones they are willing to publicly admit to, anyway. Disney have a brand to maintain, and sometimes they need to maintain that brand by quietly pretending certain things do not exist - either because they are out of step with modern culture, or because they are just very poorly made.
They might've lost the original videos, sadly. There's so much lost media out there, it's kind of depressing to think about it.
It's too bad that a lot of the episodes are lost. This is TV history! And it has it's charm.

I actually remember there being an episode with a love triangle between Lilly, Sebastian, and the dog dude whose name I forget. Seriously.

This is one of the most professionally made shows on RUclips. It just feels like something that you would see on actual TV.
90% of the time, I have absolutely zero interest in any of the shows or attractions that are talked about on this channel, like "Dumbo's Circus" for instance, but I still always become invested in every episode of Defunct.

Yeah China is weird when it comes to American cartoon characters. If they're naked or have no pants (like Pooh & Donald Duck) they're considered "porn"...even though they're animal characters. Like for example Garfield (who is a cat) is banned there. But that's only 1 example of why some cartoons get banned in certain places...even here in the US.

I never watched "Dumbo's Circus" but when you showed the hand puppets I nearly fell off my bed in shock. Many of those same puppets were used in "The Mother Goose Video Treasury", which I did have on VHS as a child, and a quick IMDb check confirms they had the same producer.
Whoa, this gave me a flashback. I have a memory of a puppet saying "rain rain go away, come again another day, like Thursday or Saturday" (or maybe he said other days of the week.) Pray, kind stranger, do you know if it's from Mother Goose Video Treasury?
@@Claubuza I don't remember that one but looking on RUclips there were a couple different episodes besides the volume we owned so it may have been on one of those.
I think I saw that one years ago is that the one show with mother goose has those three goslings and she tells them the "true stories behind popular nursery rhymes" and they are all puppets?
@@daredrogers3884 No that was Jim Henson's Mother Goose Stories. The Mother Goose Treasury volumes featured a combination of hand puppets and human actors, plus Bertram, a giant goose puppet large enough for Mother Goose to ride on.

THIS is the one I've been waiting for ever since DefunctTV started! I to this day (I'm 36) can sing every single line to this opening theme song. Few shows stuck with me like this one did. The visuals are just too bizarre to ever forget.
Every time I brought up this show in conversations about kids TV from my youth people looked at me like I was crazy. But it stuck with me for thirty plus years. Glad I’m not the only one.
This was one of a small handful of series he's reviewed we actually grew up on. We'd have been in highschool when the rest came out.
Same. I went to elementary school every day after a morning of Dumbo's Circus, Welcome to Pooh Corner, and Alice in Wonderland.
I was born in 1981. There was a period of time when I was in elementary school when the closing credit music of “Dumbo’s Circus” meant that it was time to go to school. What an awesome episode, great job Kevin, and thanks Craig!
I also have memories of watching *Dumbo* and *Pooh* before school when I was little. Also reruns of *The Mary Tyler Moore Show.*

Y'know, it is interesting how Disney tried to keep their franchises alive even before the Live-action remakes: between video-games, edu-tainment CD-Roms, Spin-offs, TV shows and the Direct-to-video sequels (to which Dumbo was supposed to get one, but it was cancelled).
Only the properties that didn't have any sort of cultural impact are ignored in these experiments like Oliver and Company, Great Mouse Detective, their pre-Tangled CGI movies.
101 Dalmatians did get a resurgence from the public in the 1990s thanks to the two Live-Actions films. The series gained an animated show in 1997, and recently "101 Dalmatians Street" which has a new set of dalmatian hinted to be the offspring of the originals dalmatians.
That's really interesting, almost as interesting as the Disney Junior Lion King Spin-off Lion Guard being directly linked to LK's direct-to-video sequel Simba's Pride.

Oh my god, this is totally one of those "did that actually happen" vague childhood memories deep in the back of my mind for decades.
It's great to finally hear more about this show. This is the kind of experimental stuff I like to see from Disney. I appreciate this a lot more than their more modern approach of buying out and coasting off other properties.
I said it on the Pooh Corner video, and I'll say it here too; that show, this show and Mousercise would actually get me to consider Disney Prime.
I have the opposite problem from most people, apparently: I remember this show from when it first aired, but I just assumed people never mentioned it because it had maybe a dozen episodes and never really caught on, not because it had fallen off the face of the earth.

I don't remember but I made that article too) and just seeing these lost media cases getting a lot of attention is really special to me because it feels like my efforts did actually matter to people out there and I played a part in helping find what's lost

I vaguely remember that show! I have a very specific memory of watching it while sitting in bed on a Saturday morning during one of the "Disney Channel Free Weeks" that they would have every so often to advertise why you should sign up for the channel.

Did they greenlight this before or after he left? He turned in his resignation in September 1984, and even (and especially) with multiple episodes a week it sounds like they'd need more than six months to get from conception to airing.
Seeing her do her tightrope act here, special feelings definitely came flooding back.

I was hoping for this as soon as Pooh Corner came out!!
I grew up having to have a lot of surgeries due to spina bifida, I think I was 5 or 6 (1990-1991) and really nervous about getting a surgery that I was in the hospital waiting to be taken back for. This came on the TV in the hospital room, it was the first time I had ever heard of it, but it really helped calm me down. For some reason that memory has stuck with me my entire life and this show holds a special place in my heart due to that.
I actually remember this show QUITE vividly and for a while it was one of those "Was this a real show or was it a dream I had?" shows. In particular, i remember one of the songs was "Every Lion Ought To Have A Mane" (which I later found out was a parody of "Everybody Ought To Have A Maid" from A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum) from an episode when Lionel's hair was falling out.
And not to wax nostalgic here, but the subject of this video, plus that recreation of the old Disney Channel logo really brought me back to sitting on my parents' bedroom floor watching Disney Channel on that crappy TV they used to have (which always had a stain on the speaker because I put silly putty on it once).

Someone on Reddit saw the episode of that one you were talking about and he never got to see the end of the question about if he was losing his fur or something else. He wanted to know how that episode of dumbo's circus ended and he's looked everywhere for an answer as it seems dumbo's circus is lost.

I really love watching the Defunctland Channel and all of its shows.
My parents had a strict rule that I was only allowed to watch the show if they were out of the room, because they absolutely could not stand it. Watching it as an older kid, it really did seem kind of inane.

I've never seen this show, but it makes me irrationally annoyed that even though Timothy was such a good friend to Dumbo they apparently left him out of this show entirely.

I remember that show. I remember specifically an episode where Holly spoofed *My Fair Lady* with a musical number in a costume similar to Eliza Doolittle's and a fake Cockney accent.

Jeez, feels like I just got hit over the head with the nostalgia stick. I was less than ten years old and remember enjoying it and thinking that Lilli was really pretty.
I have four ideas for future episodes: Out of the Box, Stanley, Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child, and Crashbox.
The latter has a bit of a cult following, an educational, unique, and interesting show that used to be on HBO Family. Happily Ever After showcases classic stories in different cultures. Like Goldilocks set in Jamaica. Famous stars like Raven have done the show
I remember that Happily Ever After show. HBO'S cartoons were really neat, but also I don't know a single one that is still talked about today.

What a blast from the past, I wasn't even sure I had seen this show when I started watching the vid but I started remembering all sorts of things as it played on. Especially that opening and closing song!
I did not know Jim Cummings' first role was in this show. Hard to believe that he is still going to this day, even having a role in the DuckTales reboot.

Oh man, have I ever been waiting for this! I watched it all the time when I was a kid, then forgot about it for like 20 years aside from occasionally humming the theme to myself and wondering what show it came from. Then it just suddenly sprang back to memory a couple years ago. Same with Pooh Corner.
At least Dumbo didn't teach kids about "Good touch and bad touch."

tbh we should be teaching kids that. :/ it help keep kids from getting abused. If if abused that they can tell. Adult give kids too many mixed signals ion what is and isnt ok and kids end up being in situations and get abused.. and threats to not tell.

@@jeremyriley1238 parents don't always have the awareness, the knowledge, or the energy. Plus, in some cases parents *are* the ones doing the "bad touch" :/ The more resources kids have, the better. This shouldn't be taboo.

Dang, I totally remember this show (and Pooh Corner and the Raccoons, if ever there was a show that could use a DefunctTV episode, its The Raccoons). It's another one of those shows I watched for about only about 6 months in the early early 90s when my family happened to have the Disney Channel for a very brief window. I really remember the closing theme and its visuals specificity.
Maybe it's just me but the concept of digital trading cards seems kind of pointless, part of the appeal comes from having the physical object.
I would have agreed with you at some point, but I've sunk so much time into collecting digital clothing in Love Nikki Dress Up Queen that I've gotta say that some people are into it. And mind you, I just collect what I can get for free. Some people put money into these things.

Aw, this was one of my favorites growing up. I remember one episode where the lion was going on about how much he hated the color red because it made him "jumpin' mad". It's weird the things that stick with you 30 years later.
This was one of my favorite shows as a kid. They really need to put this on plus, I was actually hoping it would be included when I purchased it, as well as the alladin animated series. Thanks for making this! Well done.

@@princesskristan I was luck enough to get one of those dvd and vcr combos that convert vhs to dvd..you can probably find one second hand..I also have a device that basiclaly lets you hook up a vcr to your computer and convert to digital...so it depends on what you have. Do you have a working vcr?

I’ve got probably at least 10-15 episodes of Dumbo’s Circus myself. We recorded a lot of Disney Channel free previews from 1992-1996.
We were lucky to have basic cable when I was a kid. I lived for Disney Channel Free Preview weekends.

I remember once as a kid, I was watching DUCK TALES: THE MOVIE on Disney Channel one night and fell asleep.
I woke up to find an episode of DUMBO’S CIRCUS on, and I thought it was a fever dream!
Even as a small child, it bugged the heck out of me that Dumbo still needed his "magic feather" to fly in this series, contradicting the movie.
Very interesting! I remember watching "Dumbo's Circus" growing up, as well as The Disney Channel in general. Also, if possible, how about doing an episode on another classic Disney Channel show, "DTV"?

The only thing I remember about this show was the orangutan, who I assumed was the actual King Louie from the Jungle Book captured and forced to perform.

this was part of my childhood. as well as a few other things from the same era. This brings back memories gees. I do remember the feather being an issue for me too. but it didn't bug me that much.
