I just picked up the superlink Grand Convoy version of that figure. Heavy investment but totally worth it, I still like the Cybertron figure better, but this one is still fun.

Watched the show when i was 5 and i always wanted this Optimus his power link was so cool and when he later could combine with omega supreme and wing saber, i needed to own this guy but my parents never bought me one and i still don't own one to this day 12 years later :(
I like it, I thought I was the only person lol.
This was an awesome video to watch for nostalgia purposes. I owned a wide array of Armada and Energon toys when I was a kid, unfortunately a lot of them got thrown out, given away, or lost just over time and moving between homes, I'd love to rebuild my collection and watching this video reminded me that this was one of my favorite ones, I've even rewatched the Armada and Energon series and I started up the Armada side of my collection with bendy Prime, Smokescreen, Hot Shot, Blurr, Sideways, Demolisher, Cyclonus, and Thrust. After 2-3 more from both sides, I'll be getting a start on my Energon collection as well!
I liked to stay relatively true to the show but the one thing I did differently, for the reasons you explained about the helicopter having the loose rotor and the tab is I'd trade the spot of the drill and the helicopter because I thought having a drill hand weapon was pretty bad ass, plus it puts the helicopter in a cleaner position.

I used to have this toy and I loved it. Best configuration I used for the super mode is Drill and copter for arms, with rotors unfolded, made him a combat monster!

Looks like the animators for the show didn't know either because in the show, the flap is always out.

Your custom Energon Prime is immaculate. Do you actually play with your Primes that you painted? If so, do you use Acrylic/Lacquer/Enamel?

This was an early custom for me and I used spray paints; Krylon Fusion. Nowadays I opt for airbrush.

I'd rather avoid this figure entirely. I really didn't like the sacrifice for the super bot mode. I won't deny he looks cool and how come you didn't show Prime's combination with Energon Omega Supreme/Platinum Omega Supreme? (Granted all it is is Optimus in truck mode with his combined mode head poking out slapped in the middle of Supreme's body) but it was still a feature of the toys.
Because the video is already 40 minutes, the combination with Omega is too dumb to justify going any longer on a video I already think is way too long to begin with.

Actually cybertron is armada prime's second incarnation since both are from the same universe. Also even tho beefomus bime is fat i love the figure better than the year of the sanke repaint
abdiel the lego creator miranda That's not correct. Energon is a direct sequel to Armada. The show picks up a few years after the events from Armada with, the same kids, just a little older, introduces some new characters while still keeping some old ones. Some of the TF characters are even still using their alt modes from Armada; Demolishor, Cyclonus, and even Megatron when he is found exactly where he was left in Armada, who then reformats his old tank alt mode to be his arm-cannon in his new mold.
TF: Cybertron used the same animation style and voice actors, but never makes mention to either Armada or Energon and is never established at being a sequel to either.

Considering how detailed this review is, I was more surprised that he didn't show Optimus with the Wing Saber parts by having one blue and one red arm, same for the legs.

I understand the complaints about this figure, but if it is not "fat" the combined mode would look *REALLY* awkward I am *PERFECTLY* fine of the way Prime is proportionately designed. Not like it's the end of the world. And it's not like robots can take a crap or something.

dude. the toy blows because the modle it was based on blows. as i kid i loved LOVED transformers... but when energon came around....YUCK, I HATED IT the transformations were soo boring.

He looks silly out of package, but he is fun to play with! Do you have Wingsaber? I highly recommend getting one if you own this Prime! He's a brick by himself, but he does a great combination with Optimus!

I could almost live with the VHS and the super robot head BUT the way the arms are just out annoys me... The back of the cab is a mess and honestly the combined mode is all that saves this toy. I'm thinking: "Porkimus Prime?" In OG bot mode Id say Prime has been hittin' the ole energon hard on the weekends. :)

I think It is understandable why Optimus Prime is made to be fat looking in robot mode. he is supposed to be displayed as super mode and I think it is also fine. If you heard about super sentai mechas or any megazord toys, you will find many robots that have bodies that are not proportionate very well due to the gimmick for the combination, as well as very limited articulation. I'm kind of forgiving the flaws made on the figure but if a new energon prime figure has to be made, I think the figure will be better than the original toy.

Just come across this video and wish to ask the details for the helicopter modification, because that it's only flaw I have with the figure to so interested in that you did.

I disassembled the rotors and put the metal pin into a plastic, lego peg. I placed a round lego socket in the helicopter's rotor port and glued another under the tail section where I wanted them to peg into. The blades still spin, but not freely like they did originally.

I don't have many Energon figures, I really wasn't a big fan, but I like some of the combining Autobots, the ones that homage the originals like Mirage and Inferno, but Optimus is definitely the one I find the most fun.

Hey Bert can you tell me the between energon Optimus prime that comes in the gray box and the one that comes in the red box what is the difference is it the mouth plate because I know it's one that has a face molded into it and one that has the classic prime face plate which one has the classic face plate gray box or red box
I really don't know. I got mine second hand, loose, no box as well so I just looked around until I found one that had the mouth plate.

I get why you feel you can defend the disproportionate aspects of this, possibly the single WORST Optimus Prime to date (not counting the vast majority of the various horrible Bayformer Primes...). I understand, and I understood even back in the day when it came out, that he was really intended to be utilized in his "combined" mode, rather than in his regular bot and base mode. Really, I get it.
However, that still isn't a valid excuse for SUCH a craptarded chicken bot looking Optimus Prime. This is Optimus freaking Prime, for crying out loud, not some random second or third tier character like Landmine or Speedbump. There should definitely been a crap-ton more effort put into making this figure MUCH MORE balanced and cohesive in EVERY mode, not JUST the "combined" aspect. Playability and imagination are great, but there is NO excusing this abortion of an excuse for an Optimus Prime just because it's geared towards ONE mode and not ALL THREE modes. No excuse whatsoever. As much a brick as Power Master Optimus Prime was back in G1, that figure STILL kicks Energon Optimus Prime in the nuts and stands there pointing and laughing at him...because that version was functionally playable and fun in ALL modes, even with less articulation and without the lame electronic noises. I had more fun making my own sounds with a proportionate Prime and functional base mode.
Sadly, even in his drone megazord mode, he's just all over the place colorwise, so I give you credit for your custom take on the drones, making it less crap and much more appealing to see. Nicely done!
Unfortunately, I have yet another reason to feel revulsion and disgust with Energon Optimus Prime, beyond the horrible cartoon graphics and blocky, clunky figures in general, that accompanied him... That reason is simply the ENTIRE PCC line of figures. I think it would be difficult to deny that this smoking turd of a Transformer was largely responsible for inspiring the non-transforming drone combining with a central, fully transformable figure, to create some other truly hideous "combiner" figures.
You like this figure way more than any one person should, or any group of people for that matter, lol.😉 But like me, you have your own opinions and taste in what you like and enjoy, so we don't have to agree about how awesome or horrible it actually is. My main thing is that I just didn't feel like having him geared strictly towards the "combined" mode was a legitimate excuse for the other modes to look so half@$$€d. Like I said, this is Optimus freaking Prime, and for all intents and purposes, should be THE flagship figure for ANY Transformers line, past present or future, and he isn't even MY personal favorite character, but he IS an icon and should be treated with more respect by Hasbro.
All that being said, I enjoyed this video, and all the others of yours that I've seen thus far, because you're at least enthusiastic about what you're doing, and I appreciate how thorough you are when going over details, combinations and play features among other things. I also enjoy checking out your own custom figures, as much as anything official. As an artist and customizer myself, I can appreciate your work and effort. (I just recently finished customizing Jazz, Windcharger and Sideswipe for a more cartoon accurate CW Masquerade Optimus Prime since Hasbro couldn't be bothered with that apparently.)

I can see how much you appreciate these guys, and like myself, you have a passion for the figures you enjoy, which I think is awesome. Your enthusiasm for figures being reviewed is clear and very much appreciated, I assure you. Which is why, not only did I watch the entire video of a figure I pretty much detest, I enjoyed hearing what you had to say about it.
I knew going in that you were going to be very interested in the figure, but more importantly in this case, for myself, I also knew that you were going to be informative and detailed with your information and knowledge of everything that went along with this figure...and I was not disappointed.
I would like you to know however, that if anyone were going to change my mind about this guy, you'd be one of the few people whose opinion on the figure would matter to me, just so you know. In that regard, I did see a couple of things that were pretty cool and maybe even made me hate the figure a little less than before. Those things being the combination with a character other than Omega Supreme, which I'm glad you mentioned, but did not show, by the way...the comparison with the YotS version, which I prefer more, thanks to the color scheme...and your custom take on the drones to improve the overall look of his "combined" mode.
I may not like the figure so much, but I did enjoy the review, and the fact that you have a genuine joy for the figure itself, and moreso the character in general. Keep it up! I look forward to watching more.

@Bert The Stormtrooper Reviews transformers energon was my childhood. My uncle, who collects transformer toys gave it to me because he hated it. I remember watching it as a kid and feeling completely empty.
