What about 1979’s Mad Max? Taking in over $100 million globally against a budget of $350K. Thats a monster hit.
"The Gods Must Be Crazy" came quietly into a handful of theatres in 1980 with pretty much zero advertising. Through sheer word of mouth, it became so popular that it stayed in some theatres for *TWO. FULL. YEARS.*
Damn I remember that movie it was about a coca cola bottle wasn't it
Yup. I remember that one. Funny weird little film.
Speaking of South African films that could be on this list: District 9.
I was living in San Francisco at that time, and it ran in one of the smaller theaters for at least two years. I saw it four times and enjoyed it more each time.
I think Ace Ventura Pet Detective should’ve been on this list! As someone who was dragged kicking and screaming to the theater, no one at the time gave it any attention… but it turned out to be one of the funniest movies ever! 🤣🤣🤣 While it could never be made today, it was one of the biggest surprise hits of the 90s! 🥰
But they're pushing movies they're getting paid for
Also Wayne's Worl and The Mask.
@@gahan101 Well, "The Mask" wasn't really that unexpected following the only months old overnight supersuccess of "Ace Ventura".
A valid list candidate for sure.
I’ve been a beekeeper for 50 years now, and I attest that the movie is 100% accurate 😂
Why isn’t “Star Wars: A New Hope” Number 1?!! Literally nobody not even George Lucas thought that Star Wars would be a such smash hit at the box office, let alone lead into one of the biggest franchises in history!
Agreed! Great point!
what was the Sydney Sweeny film in the opening?
@@fredflintknock32 4:13 - Anyone but you
Yeah theatres wouldn't even play it so if they wanted to play a different movie based on a book they were forced to play A New Hope beforehand
He even missed the premier since he took a trip to Hawaii with Steven Spielberg, just to take a vacation from the arduous task that was creating Star Wars was.
He wasn't expecting it to flop of course but he wasn't expecting a big box office success in the slightest, he was hoping to at least get som press attention and get his money back.
Yourselves especially included on The Bee Keeper btw. I’ll remind you you included it in a list a few months ago of “upcoming movies destined to fail.” 😂😂😂
And that's why there's a "What" in "WhatCulture".
Top Gun Maverick is the best sequel movie I've seen in decades. It perfectly captured the feel of the first movie while building on it and taking it to another level. That's how you make a sequel and a lot of what made that movie great is Tom Cruise he is one of the most dedicated actors who commits to making the best product for the fans. He also does his own stunts and fly's planes, helicopters and skydived off a motorcycle launched off a ramp seven or eight times to get the shot right.
Did you just call Paranormal Activity a romp!?! That's pretty funny. I know how it ends and all, but I've never actually stayed awake through the whole thing!
Gotta be one of life's greatest mysteries. Why is Paranormal Activity popular? By far the most boring movie I've ever tried to watch.
It's the first movie I've ever walked out of. Dosed off one too many times. I couldn't imagine any ending redeeming what I was watching, so I cut my losses.
Hanz Zimmer didn’t compose the soundtrack for the first Pirates of the Caribbean film. That was Klaus Badelt. Zimmer worked on several of the sequels however.
Four Weddings and a Funeral... it was a huge success on a tiny budget and effectively launched the global careers of Hugh Grant and Richard Curtis, and a wave of successful British rom-coms
... and it was trash.
on the other hand that is true of the Jumanji remake as well.
Missing from the list…Dirty Dancing
Don’t understand why Maverick wasn’t a more obvious hit, guess they just underestimated how much people still loved Top Gun and the character of Maverick and that it would get people who very rarely went to the cinema to make the effort.
Top Gun: Maverick was going to be a hit from the day Tom Cruise signed on.
The reason was likely due to the 30 year gap, and the lack of interest in the military.
Guess another ra ra team America movie was overdue.
It also came out during Covid. I live in Los Angeles and I had to go out to Las Vegas to watch it in theaters.
What about the Sixth Sense? M Night's first movie, and most folks considered Bruce Willis's career dead. Come to think of it, you could also say the same thing about Pulp Fiction which wasn't on the list.
Who would have thought that making smart, quality films would bring in such a big audience? Regardless of budget? Are you listening Hollywood?
To answer your question: no, they aren't listening. They never really do.
Paranormal Activity… in every What Culture list since the beginning of time.
I found the fact that Top Gun Maverick was going to be a hit super predictable. I in fact thought everybody thought that. Upon reflection though it might have just been because I worked in video stores for almost 20 years, only leaving that career six years ago. So I know that dudes love Top Gun, it's popularity hasn't wavered. It's like Fight Club, dudes love it.
Wow. I would like to see the Venn diagram of Fight Club and Top Gun afficionados. One is a satire on masculinity , one is a worship of it. Both are beautifully shot and have a cracking soundtrack I admit.
This guy makes the last syllable of each sentence hang in the air for an age 😂
The 1st movie that popped into my head was My Big Fat Greek Wedding. My mother just HAD to see it b/c her friends all recommended it. I expected to suffer b/c my tastes at the time were, "If nothing blows up I'm not interested." What a pleasant surprise!
THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY...I was bored and went to the movies by myself, only a hand full of people in the theater...I wasn't expecting much, everyone there was laughing their asses off...u just did t see it coming. when I need a laugh everyonce in a while I still put this movie on.
I saw it after I had a tooth removed and was waiting for the Novocaine to wear off. I couldn't stop laughing, no matter how bad it hurt.
that hairgel tho
What about Jaws? After the huge trouble they went through, not many people thought it would be the huge success that it ultimately became.
The movie that created the summer blockbuster wasn't included? I'm shocked. Usually Whatculture is so on top of these things, they rarely get embarrassed by missing obvious additions or by accidently never having seen a movie they're critiquing or praising. Some intern is gonna get fired.
Spielberg himself even said that he thought “Jaws” would kill his burgeoning career. However when it became a smash with its minimalism, iconic score, excellent 3 leading men and of course Spielberg’s direction made it work so well
I admit I giggled a little when the word "shortcoming" was said over a shot of Kevin Hart.
Well spotted 😂
There’s Something About Mary should be on here
Just need two more beekeeper films so we can have the 3keeper
Now *that* would generate some buzz. 🐝
The movie after that would surely be a prequel. The Bee4Keeper.
hopefully not, crap
Blair Witch Project, Greatest Showman, Sound of Freedom and Oppenheimer
I will always remember when my then toddler son first saw "Toy Story". A friend of ours had given our son a small figure of Buzz (plastic, not the full size toy), so we bought the VHS when it was released. Our son was avidly watching until the start of the reveal of Buzz. The threatening music, the slow pan from boots to helmet. He scampered away from the TV, while holding the Buzz figure, but kept looking back, and when Buzz's face is shown, my son looked at the figure in his hand, then back to the TV, and a huge grin spread over his face. He watched every second from that moment, and we knew he had a new fixation.
So are the Rock’s , Eastwood’s , Tom Cruise’s, Schwarzenegger’s, Stallone’s ….
Etc
It’s a genre : action movies
There are a lot better choices than some of the ones on here. The Godfather, the original Ghostbusters, & Raiders of the Lost Ark are a few that come to mind.
Point of Order: Klaus Badelt composed the score for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Hans Zimmer did composing duties on the following 3 sequels, with Zimmer's protegé Geoff Zanelli stepping up for the 5th one.
I assumed Titanic would be on the list. At the time, the most successful movie of all time based on a story everyone already knew how it would it end.
The only reason people thought Titanic wouldn't be a hit was because it was so over budget. No one expected a global phenom, but I think because James Cameron was behind it, people at least expected a decent hit at first.
Every Jason Statham movie is the same. The only thing that changes is the character names and the advances in the special effects. If you liked one of his movies, chances are you’ll like them all equally.
While I agree that they are all very similar, overall quality does vary a little.
Wrong his character in Revolver is nothing like his character in Transporter or Cranke.
@sarahprice659 Yeah, some I like more than others. Like Crank is probably his best action flick IMO. I think his best overall movie is Snatch.
His best work in the last 10 years was Spy. He was surprisingly funny and had a lot of great comedic timing playing a parody of his usual schtick
Jaws…The Godfather…Rocky…Amélie…Leon (The Professional)…Smokey and The Bandit…
That's not a knife 🔪 🔪this is a knife 🗡️🗡️
I absolutely loved the Beekeeper
Funny enough, a movie that Sydney Sweeney doesn't mind talking about.
I loved get out
One of the best horror movies in years
Im still dumbfounded that Top Gun 2 was Tom Cruise first movie to break a billion dollars
I'm still annoyed that Edge Of Tomorrow, which is better than Groundhog Day, did as poorly as it did.
11\10 movie just for watching Emily Blunt doing press ups. Could watch that all day.
YES! The most logical #1 on this list turned out to BE the #1 on this list!
I didn't see this coming. I haven't thought that Anyone But You will save Romcom genre.
How could you not think a Jason Statham movie would be a box office smash? I expect it.
I love all toy story movies
What about Snow White, Jaws, Star Wars, and Titanic?
I worked at a theater when My Big Fat Greek Wedding came out, it stayed so long in the theater. The reason why...weekday audience! Usually the weekday audience is just parent with kids, but My Big Fat Greek Wedding stayed due to the steady stream of weekday senior citizens coming to see. The only movie I remember staying longer than My Big Fat Greek Wedding is Shrek, which we kept for 2 weeks after it was released on DVD.
Jumanji was AMAZING
I'm still waiting for the next film
It was so much better than it was expected to be!

Considering “Toy Story” was my first theatrical experience (just before I turned 2), it’s amazing to have been part of making that film such a smash hit. The first movie is a treasure and proved Pixar would be the studio to watch at the time
Another one from back in the 90s was Stargate. The studio released it in theatres hoping for modest returns at best with the expectation it would make a profit from home video sales but then to everyone's shock, it just kept making money.
Yeah, it put Devlin and Emmerich on the map, for sure. They went back to the well of "rip off all the 1980s movies and 1960s alien conspiracy-theories" in ID4 but this time, it did about as well as everyone expected it would (which was very well).
I don’t think anyone really can predict what’s going to be a hit anymore.
I saw Sydney’s sweeneys movie twice just for her, don’t even remember the title
She’s the reason I went to see it because honestly why not.
The Beekeeper was awesome!!! I hope it brings more awareness to scams.
And the crimes of Hunter Biden haha
Glenn Powell is the man. I knew it the first time I saw Everybody Wants Some & it’s just been proven with each movie he has stared in. He also has been lucky to work alongside such great costars as Zoey Duetch (x2), Sydney Sweeney, Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, & more. My many will win his Oscar some day, and I bet sooner rather than later!
The Beekeeper was a Great Film 🎬💯
Waterworld on a list of box office giants? Well done.
Ghostbusters in 1984 made on a budget of 30 million dollars, had an opening weekend of 13.5 million and went on to gross 229 Million domestic
was the highest grossing movie of the year, beating Indiana jones and the temple of doom, beverly hills cop and the Karate kid.
... and an uneven script.
The directors somehow could tell that Bill Murray didn't want to be there and was just collecting a check, and *made it work for his character*. How they did that, is a secret that everyone who had to direct Bruce Willis would have loved to learn.
I see two reasons why Anyone But You was a hit.
they should caption the dialog on those reasons, then half of us might have a chance at following the script
Glen Powell is the only actor that I see on there twice. And for the live action Aladdin, nobody expected it to make a billion dollars.
Grumpy Old Men and The Quiet Man
I wonder how many films with "Man" or "Men" in the title do well, compared with film titles containing the word "Woman" or "Women".
I am not sure I have ever been this early, it was an accidental click but I always watch WC videos so I will take the first view for once 😆.
It's a bit of a myth that no one outside of Australia knew Paul Hogan before Crocodile Dundee. His TV show had been exported to the UK (where it was a hit) and even played on late night TV in the US (when they were out of fresh Benny Hill episodes to run through). He had also been in a series of high profile Fosters Lager commercials worldwide. So while he wasn't a "name" he certainly was a familiar face to many outside Australia.
Paranormal Activity: the first movie I walked out of in the theater. "Mother" the second. "Drive-away Dolls" the third. I toughed out a lot of stinkers, but these were too much.
The Beekeeper was so good!
I think the thing about anyone but you is that it is actually funny, not romcom funny but actually funny. Most romcoms make you smile but with anyone but you you’re actually laughing which is a real point in it’s favour.
Stunned, The LEGO Movie isn't on here. I'm a huge fanboy, and even I had mostly written it off as a big commercial... Boy was I wrong.
I liked anyone but you the most because it actually but forward realistic relationships goals.
I know what people say about “hindsight being 20/20” but honestly most of these shouldn’t be that surprising. The only surprises should be Crocodile Dundee and Get Out.
Jumunji 2 actually respected the fans and the lore, which is why it was such a hit when the turd TLJ took a nasty old crap on both the fans, characters, and story of SW.
The Beekeeper. Huh. Seems to me I saw a video on RUclips a few months ago where it was on a list of 'Movies Already Doomed To Failure'. Gee, I wonder who posted that?
Napolean Dynamite and The Hangover couldve been on the list.
Yep saw the Beekeeper coming a good revenge flick,👍
These numbers in millions that are used to make movies is such a waste. Imagine if half went to fixing all the problems in the world. Housing/feeding everyone.
You don't math, do you?
Turns out that a well written film with good cast and people behind the scenes who know what they are doing is the key to a good movie, who knew! The best thing about the lower budget movies is that they aren't subject to studio interference - Jordan Peele should be afraid (by the way when will he make a horror comedy, master of both)
Pretty Woman?
In The Bee Keeper, why is he wearing a left-handed fencing jacket when handling bees????
What this list shows, IMO, is that a good script, good acting, & good direction get you a long way. Even if you have just a middling script, attractive co-stars with chemistry (eg “Anyone But You”) can help you over the hump.
Sorry, Hollywood; it’s not all about milking existing IP.
They need to hire older people lol. To have a Disney big budget movie with one of the top leading men at the time and call it a surprise without mentioning Star Wars or so many others shows the the youth of Whatculture.
Titanic ... at the time people were saying it was going to be the biggest flop of all time , how did that turn out ?
Anyone But You was a good movie, I enjoyed it and Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell were really good in it and had great chemistry. But this movie absolutely shows the power of social media. I have never seen a cast work so hard pushing a film via social media, interacting with their fans and showing their fans social media posts. Causing fans to go back and see it again to film content in the theatre in the hopes the stars of the movie would repost their posts. So the cast worked their ass off to make it the success it is.
Jumanji welcome to the jungle is a straight sequel not a reboot soft or otherwise
Are we saying that a movie with Jason Statham where he act like a combination between (The Equalizer and John Wick) had no hope of making money? Like no one knew it would be successful?
I still, to this day, don’t understand why Blair Witch Project was so successful. It was incredibly boring for the first 90% of the movie and then abruptly ended just when it started getting interesting.
Surprised that the following have been omitted, perhaps in part 2 eh?
The Full Monty
Four Weddings & A Funeral
Muriel's Wedding
The latter of which I'm sure that the financials online are wrong. They've the budget at 9m US, there's no way it's that, 9m AUD perhaps which would have been 4-6M USD.
It was the first film I'd ever seen outside of a Star Wars movie that played all summer longer in the multiplexes in the UK. And every girl I knew in the 90's and early 2000's owned a copy on vhs (along with Dirty Dancing, Ghost & Titanic). Yet the box office take for the UK is 0!
I don't think anyone was surprised at Maverick
Beekeeper isnt a john wick knock off
maverick not expected to be a hit?.......toss
Bad News Bears
Benji
Animal House
Porky's
and even Star Wars was a big surprise.
I believe some of the best movies make good use of the budget. Not 20+ percent to a single actor. That said, im sure some are indeed worth it, but look at Tarantino films. He writes parts with specific people in mind, but has time and time again been perfectly happy casting someone else in the end. I'd say that chasing certain actors with the budget is probably not the best idea.
Then again, this is opinion, and I'm just a movie junkie
it almost seems as though people like original movies, that are a bit different.
chapters
OK if you're going with new movies I can understand it but. Since you're going back to the 80s then why not "Caddyshack"?
Strong recency bias in this list.
Um how do you leave Barbie of this list. 1.4 Billion! nobody saw that coming
I was a bit surprised that Barbie wasn't on this list. Am I in the minority that thought this wouldn't do that well at the theatres?
No major names in get out? Ever heard of Catherine Keener? Or Bryan Williams daughter? 😊
Ah, yes... Bryan Williams' daughter. An actress so famous you can only remember her dad's name.
@@davidanderson_surrey_bc ummm that’s why I ended that sentence with an emoji smile.
get out had steven root are you going to tell me he is not a big name and dundee had a star Paul Hogan he was well known in Aussie in which the movie was made for
Jumanji had the benefit of The Last Jedi being such an awful movie that people went to that instead
also how does a 3 hour R rated biopic of the man responsable for the atomic bomb that made nearly a billion dollars. not make this list.
Jamanji?
Please stop adding an extra "ah" at the end of every other phrase. Drives me so nuts I can never watch these to the end.
Holy crap I can’t stand the way you overemphasize the last word of every sentence 👎🏻
Jason Statham, Jemma Redgrave & Jeremy Irons, you'd bee hard pushed to make a bad movie.
Beekeeper had great action scenes and one boring as fu@@ story.
ummmm im not sure Top Gun was a surprise hit the amount of hype leading up to this was so huge I think it was pretty predetermined it would be a hit even if it was people just going to see what the big deal was I maybe can agree with the rest of the list but Top Gun maverick does not seem to fit this list in any way
