I remember seeing this as a 13 year old. I never knew doing tricks was a thing on a skateboard. Prior to this I just used my board to travel. This stoked me so badly I grabbed my board and tried to mimic what they were doing in air on the streets. Skated til 93 when I quit. Last trick I learned was 360 flip. Til this day I still love skateboarding
2 of my favorite skater of the era. Loved Hosoi's big air and style. Hawk was amazing technically and kinda the face of the sport but I liked the guys with style, like Caballero.
If Tony would have landed his last 720 cleaner. He would have won this event by a point instead of the other way around. Tony and Christian Definitely Legends of the game.
This must of been the best time in skateboarding listen to that crowd to have such a rivalry is awesome they don't have that anymore the internet pretty much stopped it back then everyone thought hawk and Christian hated each othe but they were bros they skated together all the time it was the crowd that made them a rivalry awesome times
Hosois airs are sooooo smooth. I like hawks technical skill but Hosois style keeps you glued to his entire run. Like everyone say s you either like the mad style or tricked outt tech. Style baby!!!!
Hosoi's textbook McTwists seemed about equal to Tony's low 720's. Hosoi's huge blasting is probably what won over Tony's tech and bag of tricks. The crowd loves to see big airs. You can win a baseball game with well placed singles but everyone loves to see the home run.
How...how i'd whish to do...only big airs....like Hosoi does...just big air...nothing else...no twist or flip...or anything...BIG AIRS...pum...bs...fs.....
I can't help but wonder what could have been if Hosoi didn't get locked-up and was pitted against Hawk in the X-games as originally planned. Likely the world would have instantly fallen in love with Hosoi's high flying confident agro Dogtown style over Hawk's technical mastery.
The world only really started paying attention when Tony Hawk did the 900. But his video game would have made him a superstar, regardless. Hosoi might have been in the game, though; I think he totally could have been. Real skaters know why Hosoi is great, and that's what matters.
Tony had left everyone else in the dust by 1988, including Christian. The last legitimate victory over Tony from an opponent of his (in the 80's) was Chris Miller, about a year and a half before this contest.
got to meet both of these legends during their xgames appearance in ventura last summer. was amazing to realize that Christian was really a humble and kind dude. I rode a hammerhead in the mid 80’s when he was doing things no one could and higher than anyone above the coping. Lucky to have been born when i was and love skateboarding from 77-now. Too bad we gotta run out of knee cartilage. Help us Kryptonics-you’re our only hope!
Always loved Hosoi's style. His speed and agression. He could of kept his style and added the 720 to his run he would have beat Hawk most times. Easier said than done though.
@@crazyralph6386 Danny Way could do them in 89, but not as consistent as Hawk. Hawk added new difficult tricks every contest, like the caballerial rock'n'roll transfer here. In 89 he had Indy and Stalefish 540, new technical lip tricks and so on, and in 1990 the Ollie 540 ... Hosoi could perhaps do a single run on par with Hawk, but not in the long run. 90's Hawk would be a contender for top three even today.
Damn. Both tore it up like crazy, but Tony Hawk was on fire. To all the "hardcore" indy skaters who rag on Hawk, this is why he is considered the best.
I still consider Hosoi the best of that era. Maybe he lacked in tricks compared to Hawk, but damn... his skating was just so fucking beautiful to look at. Two different schools I guess. I always preferred style rather than tech stuff. Hosoi had both.
I was in the crowd. I was 12 years old. Tony mag was really on fire that night. Hawk did great as he always does. But I remember being there and thinking they gave that to hawk because he is Tony Hawk. That was my feelings in it. Not to dimish Hawk, of course he was a legend! It was an amazing time period to be alive then.
Hi, yes you are correct, he was with Santa Cruz when he was skating here. The board he is on is a Raising Sun, 1986 Santa Cruz Vert deck. Dam rare to find in the colour he had, which was the orange colour one. I seen plenty of blue one's, and to my amazement one orange deck came up on Ebay the other week. Its hard to see the colour of his one on this clip as it covered in sticker's. On the top he has a big Jimmy Z's sticker covering the Santa Cruz logo.
My two favourite vert ramp skaters... Hosoi had the power and style, Hawk had the technical and creative skill... The greatest rivalry in that era for sure. Poor Tony looked like he would snap in half if he slammed hard back then but in the 90's when he filled out more his style improved and adding to his technical skills made him untouchable!
Yeah the judges were dogshit. You watch Christian’s runs from ‘86 on were virtually the same every time until he added the 540 not long before this contest. This is why people like Neil Blender and Tom Groholski never finished great in contests despite having some of the best tricks in their runs.
Anybody have footage of those head-to-head contests sometime after this where Chris Miller started winning? I remember reading about how he beat Hawk in the finals of one of them.
Does anyone know what deck Christian Hosoi is riding in this? Is it a Sims Hammerhead, with the rising sun graphics on it? 1986 or 87? This contest was in 1988 but not sure if the deck he's on was the same year. Can anyone help answer this please, thanks.
Hosoi wins hands down when it comes to style. Tony's technical but I never really liked his goofy style. Hawk flies but Hosoi soars and is much more exciting to watch.... in my opinion.
Goofy? And never???!!! Tony became the greatest vert skater of all time without question especially when XGAMES came around. He pulled off tricks Christian could never do. I always loved Hosoi’s style in the 80’s, as a little kid he was really cool. Young Hawk was awkward in his physical development but it’s bs to hold that against him. But he did eventually grow out of the awkwardness. Rodney Mullen was the greatest street skater and no question Tony is the greatest in vert
I don’t know how impressive an Indy Air is to skaters but to a non-skater like myself I think of an Indy Air as another Christian Hosoi Signature Move.
Can someone tell me what did Gator said in 4:59 ? Maybe we should #%^#_÷ before we live the arena" is what I understand. Thanks in advance. Gator is going out of jail after all thess years
I think it is is a Santa Cruz, 1987 vert Model with the rising sun graphic's. He started with Sims early in his career, then went on with Alba and it didn't work out, so went to Santa cruz.
I uploaded this a long time ago before RUclips would allow full length videos. If I ever get my VCR hooked up to the computer again I'll re-rip the whole video in its entirety in one segment. I thought I saw one out there already awhile back but it seems to be gone now.
@Trent777howsit Kinda, Christian was with Sims, then Alva, then he started Hosoi Skts, then he went under the Santa Cruz/NHS umbrella. He folded Hosoi Skateboards cuz he was losing money due to phony knock offs.Santa Cruz boards were made very well and their graphics were hard to reproduce.
Total crap, Tony was way ahead of the game, he aired just as high, did 720's variables, Hosoi, as great as what he is, was more likable and that's why he won, Tony rode revert on Vert .. .. everyone else tried
Hosoi was my hero back in the day. Still the most stylish halfpipe rider of all time
I remember seeing this as a 13 year old. I never knew doing tricks was a thing on a skateboard. Prior to this I just used my board to travel.

It was the best time for everything in 1988!
Smoke a bowl under the ramp came up and killed it. Christian Hosoi was a artist skateboarder and a rock 🌟
that kind of ramp with the spine and roller was a sick design they should bring that back.
They built one in Ocala Fla(Tim Payne tha guy tjat built it)you could skate it for free it was SCARY, THE SPINE
Good Memories...... two Legends, Nuff said.
Hosois airs are sooooo smooth. I like hawks technical skill but Hosois style keeps you glued to his entire run. Like everyone say s you either like the mad style or tricked outt tech. Style baby!!!!
It’s the massive air, that’s what I love skate boarding put snow boarding ... big air
the whole contest would be much better if the announcers shut the hell up, this is about respect!
Man, you could never fill an arena with kids to watch a vert contest these days.
Hosoi's textbook McTwists seemed about equal to Tony's low 720's. Hosoi's huge blasting is probably what won over Tony's tech and bag of tricks. The crowd loves to see big airs. You can win a baseball game with well placed singles but everyone loves to see the home run.
You summed it up correctly, Tony still being the better skater
How...how i'd whish to do...only big airs....like Hosoi does...just big air...nothing else...no twist or flip...or anything...BIG AIRS...pum...bs...fs.....
I was at this contest. Brings back good memories especially the double ramp. Great video, thanks for posting srarcade!
I can't help but wonder what could have been if Hosoi didn't get locked-up and was pitted against Hawk in the X-games as originally planned. Likely the world would have instantly fallen in love with Hosoi's high flying confident agro Dogtown style over Hawk's technical mastery.
Nah, that shit was getting played out even back then. The whole attitude thing is what sucks in skateboarding.
The world only really started paying attention when Tony Hawk did the 900. But his video game would have made him a superstar, regardless. Hosoi might have been in the game, though; I think he totally could have been. Real skaters know why Hosoi is great, and that's what matters.
I agree they would have loved that fluid massive style 👳🏿👳👳🏿 . . I did along with many others . No one skated like Hosoi .
Imagine if Hosoi learned kickflip Indys and Stalefish McTwist ...
Tony had left everyone else in the dust by 1988, including Christian. The last legitimate victory over Tony from an opponent of his (in the 80's) was Chris Miller, about a year and a half before this contest.
Christian won this event by a point. So, how was the last time two years before this? LMFAO 😂 😂 😂
Ron Jeremy doing the interview at the end with both was epic
That 720 was absolutely sick!

Don’t think anyone other than Hawk, could pull off a 720 at that point in skateboard vert history?

@@augustvong7057 Yeah, Tony had blunts to fakie in some of his runs that season.

My first skate video, rented from the library 1997. Made a claymation of this ramp w gi joes & quaker oatmeal canisters haha
Wish i could find that
Hosoi was so stylish...always looked so smooth on the vert.
I was in the crowd. I was 12 years old. Tony mag was really on fire that night. Hawk did great as he always does. But I remember being there and thinking they gave that to hawk because he is Tony Hawk. That was my feelings in it. Not to dimish Hawk, of course he was a legend! Tony's tricks have a higher level of difficulty, but Hosoi's style and huge airs so sick.

On the street we simply called it the Hosoi hammer head.
The most impressive thing is they did all this with dance club lighting. 720 in a run is absolutely wild for 88.
Interview after the run was awkward as hell lmao
My two favourite vert ramp skaters... Hosoi had the power and style, Hawk had the technical and creative skill... The greatest rivalry in that era for sure.

93!?!?! I love Christian and all, but if his run was a 93, Tonys was a 99!

Tony's run was more powerful and had more variety. That disaster on the spine was the winner I think.
Wtf, gator was trippen.
GATOR is in prison for the rest of his life!!
Anybody have footage of those head-to-head contests sometime after this where Chris Miller started winning? I remember reading about how he beat Hawk in the finals of one of them.
Tony much more variety, Hosoi better Style. Hawk owned him for Tricks really. Both killer..
Hosoi. The most graceful skater in history.
How many people look back at this and think the comp is set up like wrestling !?
I dont see how tony lost this... but still hosoi and tony were ripping these runs!
It was sponsored by Vision. Who did Christian skate for? Lol
He slid out on the 720 ... Otherwise he might have taken it.
Hosois usage of the mini-ramp was powerful.
Ron Jeremy with the interview 😂

@@OCRay1 Mullen is the king. Fo sho
Dad right he got style
Did I miss a run? That first was 92-93 and they called it a tie?
Good ol' days.
Hosoi today still owns the best looking McTwist.
Respect to Hawk but Hosoi had style for miles. In my opinion it was so much more than just pulling tricks. For that reason alone Holmes was the man.
I agree, Hawk's impressive technically, but because he's so technical it looks labored. Hosoi makes it look effortless.
I wonder if Tony had the muscles/weight Christian had if that would have translated into the power Christian had
Nothings beats Hosoi's style
Jewel!!! Thanks so much
I don’t know how impressive an Indy Air is to skaters but to a non-skater like myself I think of an Indy Air as another Christian Hosoi Signature Move.

Gator is going out of jail after all thess years
"Maybe thats something we should pray to tonight before leaving the arena." Is what i hear.
Christian beat Tony by like a point to become the 1988 Vision Pro Champ.
God damn, hopefully those announcers were taken out back and beaten down hard
Christian was the best.
"Jesus Christ Pose"
Tony should've won that shit his last run was on point
It was sponsored by Vision. Who did Christian skate for? Lol
Commutator when he doesnt know the name of the move “Yeahhhhhhhhh!!!”
What was hosoi on
A Rising sun Santa Cruz and a pair of Vans
I think it is is a Santa Cruz, 1987 vert Model with the rising sun graphic's. He started with Sims early in his career, then went on with Alba and it didn't work out, so went to Santa cruz.

I had this in 88. Christian's run was better. He was pretty the only guy who could give Hawk a run for his money.
Dang was there...
This was fucking cool to watch
Tony>Hosoi. Hands down.
Total crap, Tony was way ahead of the game, he aired just as high, did 720's variables, Hosoi, as great as what he is, was more likable and that's why he won, Tony rode revert on Vert .. .. everyone else tried
Mysticism and charisma also count ..Hosoi has it...Hawk incredible progressive for these days...
Just like in any other judged sport, how they look doing the trick sometimes counts more than just executing more maneuverers.
Yeah Hawk probably got points deducted for that shirt, other than that, he wins hands down
It was sponsored by Vision. Who did Christian skate for? Lol
Hosoi took that win.
These announcers might be the most annoying ever...
Right!
Not to sound biased but Tony smoked him
You can tell that with all due respect that was so one-sided in every way. They had to keep it going just to keep it going.
Gator being fuckin creepy...
Tony was a machine tho, but Hosoi was like a Natural
I really wish gator would not have killed that girl poor gator got caught up in games humans play sucks she seemed like a really nice girl too
They were skating for marbles? WTF! That’s ridiculous brah 🤔
6:58...
Who the heck won this?!?
Hosoi.
Hawk won this
It was sponsored by Vision. Who did Christian skate for? Lol
it seems like the crowd favored hosoi...i wonder why
It was sponsored by Vision. Who did Christian skate for? Lol
Poorman wins with that mustache!!!
Who won? Lol
HOSOI is better!!!!
Poorman!
HOSOI always beats HAWK!
Back when skateboarding was all white and not so gettho like now
Stevie Williams is a black skateboarder and Nyjah Huston
gtfoh with that shit
Lol
Hawks a pozer
