One of the most honest interviews u can get is steve. Plus hes a guitar genius.
Liked Toto for years, but never seen him interviewed; his interview a while ago, on Rick Beato's channel was special and rekindled my love of not just his music, but the man behind the music...top dude.
Straight shooter.
You are amazing Steve!! Love you and the band!! Watched the concert. Waiting for the dvd/cd!! I hope to see you in concert!! Stay well🎶💕
He’s also very nice to his fans. Took the time to write me back one time while on tour on his time off. What a guy
@ShadowAngel Is Luke when talking about issues with the 'bass guy' referring to Shem? What had happened?
Steve Lukather took you on a journey through the interview. It was honest, emotional. I laughed my ass off in some spots. Thank you Pete for this.
I’m a nobody musician and he gives me inspiration to keep doin it no matter what people say
Yrs, great human being
Steve said it himself, he doesn't have a filter and says whatever he wants to say. Our reward is we get to listen to a fascinating and great interview.
I would hope that Steve's insights do even more than give a chuckle. I love him when he does that..but as a fellow musician...I deeply appreciate that he lets people KNOW what's REALLY going on. Toto is a different band because the business rips off musicians. Lets face it. Spotify pays .03 per stream. Their competition isn't much better. "Fans" say they love you, while they steal your content off the internet..never paying for the recording of the music, the photos, the marketing, the copyrights, the digital distribution. Steve is being so honest. If you Love music...please actually support it. Band like Toto, deserve that.
Pete that had to be the easiest interview you ever did. You ask one question and Luke talks for a half hour. lol. Very entertaining Luke is a great guy very humble and genuine.
Exactly what I was thinking, haha.
@@steveseim Just letting him speak and let off steam was great & informative.
...if you only knew the truth...
This was like Pete and Steve Lukather just pulled up a chair at the bar to hang out, and Steve wanted to vent to his buddy. This was not a typical interview but it was so candid and relaxed that it might be one of the best interviews I’ve heard.
Hoped for some remarks on maybe The Tubes or the 1978 Peter Criss solo album... ;-]
I was disappointed in this “would be” interview. Steve kept bitching and Pete barely got a freakin question in....
@@luvbasses5487 I liked how open and honest Steve was, Pete sensed Steve wanted to vent and let him get it off his chest. I liked in this case that it was not a conventional question-and-answer interview. Often a structured interview just gets formulaic responses and maybe Lukather himself is bored of doing interviews like that.
I get what you mean...most listeners and fans don’t wanna hear complaining. Vent to your shrink, not your fans.
Toto is one of the best bands ever! I am almost old as Mr.Steve Lukather and for me as a musician he is a musical inspiration each and every day. I enjoy in Toto music over 40 years and I will not stop doing this! With God speed, Mr Lukather!
This version of Toto sounds amazing. At the end of the day Steve Lukather is Toto no matter who he is with. Had the pleasure meeting Steve years ago at an Orlando guitar center. All I asked was for a picture and ended up having the greatest conversation with my guitar hero, even when I stepped away to let others have a chance, Steve found me again looking at his rig and we started talking again. He just an awesome human being.
Ariel, I can add to that. Imagine this : NAMM Show, 1994 - Ernie Ball booth. Eddie Van Halen, Nuno Bettencourt and LUKE were signing at the same table. Incredible as that sight was, I get up to Luke to have him sign my "Lukather" 1st solo CD and he ends up hugging me and having a 10 minute conversation mostly about Jeff and how much we both loved him. Luke was extremely personable, humble and genuinely a sweet guy. I told him that I thought he was the most versatile guitarist on the planet. He gave me another hug. You are right, he has that ability to make you feel like a friend, just shooting the shit with him. Great guy.
Why do the best people get dumped on most often? Steve is brilliant and one of my most favorite musicians. He always gives open, honest interviews
“If you politicize science, it’s dangerous”. THIS!!! Thanks, Luke.
Luke, just play and enjoy the ride. Don’t sweat the haters. We still love quality music done by skilled craftsmen and women
A Steve Lukather interview is so much more than just an interview, it's compulsive viewing entertainment
Its funny how you dont even have to ask him any questions and he just gives you information its really entertaining
The last time I talked to my friend Tony Barnwell who was friends with Nathan East in San Diego when we were all real young, Tony mentioned to me that he messaged Nathan. Nathan responded back to Tony that you’re not going to believe this but I just got off a plane and I’m playing with Toto, can you believe it Toto. Contrast Nathan’s attitude with their last bass player. Nathan saw it as a real honor. Sounds like the last bass player was all about something else. Tony passed away several years ago. Sometime before he passed I put together a real nice computer system for him and shipped it to him. Tony was a good friend to me and I never forgot what he did for me. I hope Luke is able to get some peace and enjoy the new band, he really deserves it. They sounded great and it looks like everyone loves being there. Best to come.
@@stobe_music Don’t know for sure but Shem Von I believe was the last bass player in 2019. The new guy from Huey is supposed to be a good guy. Jason from Chicago said once in a podcast that he does this thing he calls party slap where you slap the bass but to songs that you would never slap to. It’s hilarious! 👍
Toto rocks! All good guys!
Haha, best "interview" ever.. A 35 minute rant by Luke... love it :-)
"If you politicize science" thank you, Sir!!! Great interview
I can't think of a more difficult job than a studio musician/arranger/composer of the 1970's/80's days! You rock Mr. Lukather!!!
What?
Steve Lukather, one of the all-time greats, master of tone, as well as feel.
Steve, through it all I want to THANK YOU for keeping TOTO alive. Bottom line I have loved TOTO’s music since the 70’s and I appreciate you keeping TOTO’s music alive!! I look forward to seeing TOTO live in the near future.
this is preaching to the choir but Steve nails it when he says "there are no great musicians in rap". Bravo Luke!
You are the man, Luke! Pay no attention to the haters. You are a freakin’ legend!!!
This was absolutely fantastic. What a great interview. I really appreciate the host’s ability to just let Luke riff. Bravo.
N Luke!! He’s my guitar here!.. He doesn’t have to apologize to anyone..! 💯 Thanks Steve for keeping the 9band0 and music alive.. !!
One of my favorite Steve Lukather solo's is on Running With the Night by Lionel Richie. So good!
Rick Beato picked that too!!👍🏽
Back when Pop stars had talent and hired the best talent they could.
@@jonathancilley9450 you nailed it buddy!!
What a truly honest human being. I cannot say enough good about Steve's book. He comes across like a professional who has had an amazing life in musical history. His love for his fellow man and fellow musicians comes through real and honest. Thanks for all the great tunes Steve. God bless.
His honesty shows in his heart and his playing.
One of the greatest musicians around.
Dint discover him until 2010s
And im 55!
Can you imagine sitting down with Luke and David Lee Roth for a live interview? Both are really smart, free thinking and you don't know where it will end. That would be must see (internet) TV.
Don't pay attention to the trolls hating on you Luk. The silent majority of your fans are out there, closing their eyes and air-drumming and listening to all the great Toto tracks!
About the only thing that's as much fun as listening to Steve Lukather play guitar is listening to Steve Lukather talk. Long live Luke!
Pete, another great show. Luke is one of a kind. He is such a riot, I could listen to him for hours. I couldn't stop laughing with all the things he was going off on. Could you imagine if he ever got together with Chris Alo?
I love Steve's honesty.
It's rare . 👍🏻☮❤
Great interview Pete, boy you can see the business part of the music industry can take a lot of the joy out of a person.
Toto: proof that critics are idiots who don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. Keep doing what you're doing, Luke!
Bravo 👏 👏 👏 Luke, David Paich, Joe Williams....Gen X, 1965! TOTO fan the whole 44 years ~Keep your head up, you're still on THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD! *** WE MISS YOU JEFF, MIKE & STEVE PORCARO****
Always looked forward to a Toto album. Fantastic band. New Toto, Styx and Kansas albums out in 2021, doesn't get better than that.
Yes isn't that true! And they are all fantastic!!!
Luke is real!! Love the interview Pete
I’m 56 now and I saw you and Jeff at the BAKED POTATO when I was 18. Steve is as much of BADASS then as he is now. I love TOTO old and new and I am super pumped that they are still cranking them out 💪🏽👍🏽. Thank you Steve
One of the coolest guys on the planet. Absolute guitar monster. Pure feel
One of the most down-to-earth Rock Legends ever. Funny as s*** too,..Awesome interview Pete!
Kingdom of Desire is one of my favorite albums. Back in the day I bought it from the cd budget bin. When I listened to it for the first time I thought they put the wrong cd in the case. It blew me away.
Steve has seen it all, done it all music wise and still so passionate about it. Always loved his guitar playing and such an amazing singing voice. Very underrated. It was just so cool to just see him purge. Very down to earth. Thanks for posting this. Great job!
This is got to be one of the best interviews from a real musician I have ever heard in my life. Lukather is on a golden role here. Is this average for him? He is amazing!! Pete just let's him get on with it. FANTASTIC, GUYS!!!
In all their various incarnations, Toto have provided a kind of soundtrack to my life..ALL their music is ear candy.
Steve lukather is awesome !! Legend ...
as soon as i heard his name i heard the lick from “Hold the line” in my head
I loved this interview Pete! Luke can talk an hour about anything and also being very entertaining. All you really have to say to him is “GO”, and he can ramble forever. Thanks for this!
Steve is as down to earth as it gets. Got to meet him and he was kind enough to sign my copy of his book, which I highly recommend. His body of work
speaks for itself. Thanks, Pete
It has been a very long time since the last time I have seen an interview from Steve Lukather.
How can you not love Steve. Just a nice guy who can churn out fabulous sounding music.
Congrats on getting a word in after about 15 minutes, Pete! But in all honestly I loved listening to what Steve had to say. Really great to have this, many thanks to both.
it's restful listening to steve lukather ,finally a real human being ;-)
Looking forward to this. `Turn Back` is in my top 30 albums of all time.
Well worth the wait! This was the most entertaining interview you've done with a famous musician, Pete. Lukather is a hoot and a sage, not to mention an exceptionally talented guitarist. I love a lot of his original playing, as well as some of his Hendrix covers. That man can play cool and smooth or hot and heavy. Steve Lukather has earned the right to tattoo the Toto logo across his forehead if he wants! Loved his stories, humility, and take on life.
Amen
This interview felt like sitting with two of my old friends catching up... Amazing feeling, thank you Pete!
Fantastic interview, Pete. Love Steve. One of the truly great virtuoso guitar players (amazing singer too). Very honest, very decent, and when he’s on a roll, hilarious. Filtered or unfiltered, he’s a class act. 🙏
Always love the interviews with Steve. One of the greatest that speaks from the heart with honesty and a great sense of humor. Thank you.
What an absolute star Mr Lukather is and I wonder if that is the easiest interview Pete has ever done? From "hi how's it going" SL was in free flow and told you everything you needed to know and what the world should be like. Fantastic 35 mins.
Never been a Toto fan at all, but respect to real musicians, just read his book, great read, would love to see them live.
Fantastic interview.
Total legend and seems like a super cool dude.
Man I love your honesty steve I feel your heart
Pete, could you do a ranking the albums of Steve's solo records? Three of them especially are really good: the debut, Luke and Ever Changing Times. I doubt even Steve will ever understand how much some of his records meant to me (including Toto) at various points in my life... His solo work is much under-appreciated
That was so cool, not a big fan of Toto but have a lot of respect for Steve he is a very talented and legendary musician. Well done Pete also great interview.
I love you Luke! You are such a genuine 🙏the heart on the right spot and a deep wisdom of life! That's what so called "crazy people" are....they see the world as it is! Much love from Germany 🙏🌞❤
How cool is it to interview Steve Lukather? Nice job, Pete! You only need two questions .
I’ve always loved Toto! Steve is an incredible musician. My favorite album is Turn Back!
Lukather is top 10 in terms of greatest players IMO. Steve seemed to want to get a lot off of his chest in this interview, and Pete's minimalist approach to this interview set the right tone. If Steve wants to rant let him to do it. At times it did seem as though he was bearing his soul. He clearly still loves to do what he does. I hope he brings the band to my town. I'll definitely see them.
Luke is such an awesome interview. Very entertaining and you can tell he doesn't take himself too seriously.
That is one of the greatest interviews I have ever watched. Lukather is one my favorite players, I own all his albums as well as Toto's. Now I even like him more. Thanks Pete.
Props for scoring this interview! I love Lukather but trying to get him to focus on something in an interview is like trying to lasso a tornado. He has a lot of energy for a guy in his 60s.
What's not to like with Steve, funny, classy/brilliant singer&guitarist&songwriter, intelligent, humble man and I like evetything about him and he has delivered so much fine music that is there and will be there to listen to forever and ever, THANK YOU LUKE!!!!❤❤❤
The new Toto... Good job guys Love It... Greetings from the Netherlands
Luke is a the best. I like the man as much as you could possibly like someone you have never met. This was such a good interview. We got so much information....real, honest truths.....about the situation with Toto and everything. Thats so rare these days...
Id go watch Luke play air guitar in a Mexican bus station bathroom.
This was so awesome.
Thanks Pete, Thank you Steve Lukather!
Toto live are awesome a power that punches you in the body. So F88king great.
Isn't this the most remarkable insight you ever seen
A terrific discussion with a bona fide musical legend. I could listen to Steve talk for hours about the business.
Nothing else to be said 😆🙂 a humble and honest legend.
Loved the interview. Just ordered the blu ray/cd. Toto overtook blue oyster cult as my favorite band of all time and third best concert I've ever seen behind pink floyd & Jimmy page& the black crows. Steve lukather is on of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Will see them this tour to.
Thank you Steve and Pete for a frank, honest exposition about a good band and a fine musician. Make music as long as you love it and long live Toto in any incarnation.
I love Steve Lukather so much. He doesn't mess around!
I’m telling you the music you played with 10 days prep time was absolutely AMAZING!! TRUE TOTO fans love TOTO’s music being played PERIOD!!
Thank you Pete for interviewing Steve Lukather
I could listen to you talk about your musical history all night long, enjoyed your book, too. Excited to see how the new incarnation goes. Best of luck, and keep enjoying the touring!
Legend
Its so easy for us fans to take for granted what goes on behind the scenes of running a band. I can't imagine the stress of having so many people on the payroll and all depending on ticket sales so fair play for Steve for carrying on and I will buy a ticket when they come to town!
I applaud Steve for being open from the jump about his mental health, and the effect the last 16 months have had on us collectively. In the same breath, too, he spoke of getting help and how important that is.
Bravo on one of the great SoT interviews.
Steve is a great!!! great interview!
Toto will never die! The music will always live on. I saw Steve live in person with Ringo Starr's All Star band. I had a whole new appreciation for you. I went back to listen to the first Toto album I had and fell in love all over again. It took me back to my college days.
Don't ever apologize for who you are. You are one of a kind. Thank you for the music and the memories.
Love Toto and Turn Back albums. His collaborations with Edgar Winter, Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour and Derek Sherinian are great.
What an awesome interview! You let the man speak his mind. Kudos! Listening to Steve riff is always a treat. He's a genuine empath.
I think you're such a great guy and such a great musician Steve. After somewhere in the 80's I still absolutely love Toto.
I'm in awe of these fellas that can do session work.. Respect and stay healthy all
Wow, what a great interview. Steve is very funny. He would be a great interview for a guy like me. I'm a very shy guy. So, it's nice to interview a guy like Steve. You ask him one question, and away he went. If he thinks that Toto gets a lot of hate, it's quite like Yes level. I wasn't a big Toto fan until I got the All In cd box set. Thanks for that, Steve.
Love this guy. He’s honest. I’ve been a fan since right after HS. We both went to school in “The Valley” and would have graduated the same year. Real people came out of that time, real musicians. You can’t help but look up to the musicianship. You can’t ignore the man.
What a fantastic interview Pete.
Such an honest guy Steve is.
Not easy to pour your heart out.
Throughly enjoyed it.
Thanks again.
Funny interview, Steve is right on when he says , "There's no great Musicians in Rap", always thought that kind of music was a joke.
While that’s largely true of Rap, it’s not objectively true of Hip Hop. Give a listen to the Beastie Boys Check Your Head & ill communication albums, featuring instrumentals played through out the albums, where the Beastie Boys play guitar, stand up bass, horns, piano & drums, at a world class virtuoso level, as they approach high level jazz fusion. From the era where you couldn’t clear samples, the Beastie Boys were undeniably proficient enough, to create their own danceable world class heavy instrumental grooves to sample. & Then there are the 2 amazing Beastie Boys instrumental albums, called the in sounds from way out & the mix up, that can all be found on RUclips, invariably would surprise Steve, if he ever experienced them…8)
Luke you are a true legend 🙏👍 Toto is a part of my teenage hood …. Reminding me my time at MI Los Angeles early 90’s…. Thank you for this honest and true heart ! God bless you Luke …
I hate that Luke feels like he has to explain himself because of people hating on him. He’s a living legend. The history speaks for itself, the talent speaks for itself, and the music speaks for itself. Enjoy your life man, you’ve earned it.
First, thanks for Steve Lukather for spending some of his time with us on SoT and thanks to you, Pete, for bringing him to the channel. A tremendously enjoyable interview to watch even though there is little doubt that there may have been a few more questions on Pete's mind. Immediately went and watched some of the With A Little Help From My Friends videos. The band sounds great - proof of their musicianship if they had only been together for 10 days before playing those songs. Hope there is a chance to see them live soon and hope he will return to the SoT channel someday for another round. Thanks, Pete!
Not a fan of Toto, but what a great interview, enjoyed every minute of it.
