Dear interviewer, thank you for listening to this interesting man and allowing him to talk without interrupting. Great job!
JdS interviewing is a lot like playing music, the greats know when NOT to say anything
Thanks JdS....I’m very happy you enjoyed the interview. I try to listen rather than lead. I hope you can someday visit the MHOF Museum. Best... Joe
absolutely! Thanks to him!
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum That's the key to a great interviewer. Well done.
agree
Nothing impresses me more than someone who has made it, but who remains humble and grounded and who is still in awe of those who inspired them to pick up their instrument.
George was a no-nonsense individual. He recognized the talent Steve Luthaker has and he also was gracious enough to not disappoint his child-like desire for a Beatle to participate in that gig. George was such a wonderful man!
Mark Hamill told a story of how he and George happened to be on the same plane. Once Mark realized this asked if he could meet him. He was trying to not be too much of a Fan Boy but thanked George for his work and inspiration. George told him he liked his work too and was a Star Wars fan. It was brief but Mark took away to always be kind to his fans like George was to him. Love this story. ❤️🕉️
George is still with us! (so really shouldn't be referenced yet as "was").
@@dbagdon Wow, great story.
Great way to characterise George. Understated. Straight forward.
Always pay it forward and remember those moments when someone else was kind to you
What I love about these guys is that they have recorded and played with many big names, yet, even they are the first to acknowledge that as soon as a Beatle walks in the room there is a entirely different level of unparalleled reverence.
I remember seeing an interview with Eric Clapton back in the early 90's. He was saying that when you're a rock star you come to expect all eyes on you when you walk into a room. But when you walk in with a Beatle, nobody sees you.
@@nnotny oh l can imagine the look on poor Eric's eye whenever that would happen.. Lol. Playing intricate guitar solos and still cannot top the riffmasters ..

George Harrison was an inspirational human , talented musician and a good man .Luke is too cool 😎🇺🇸⚓️
Jeff was one helluva drummer...couldn't believe it when he died.
A brilliant, gentle soul interviewing a brilliant, gentle soul telling a story about a brilliant, gentle soul. Can it get any better than this?
i love his humility even though he's actually one of the greats IMHO
He's a gracious dude. No wonder people like him.
Levino Agaser for sure. Some folks don’t care for him much but I don’t get the hate on him. He’s always seemed humble and gracious each time I see an interview
That's not just an opinion, that's a fact.
Steve talks of George as one of the all time greats, but he himself is in that same group. What a humble, good dude. Thank you for sharing this.
@Michael H. Lukather is indeed one of the all time greats. He has appeared on too many to mention songs from the 80's. A very underrated musician. And that's not even mentioning his work with Toto.
I got to see Ringo and his All Starr Band tonight. September 10, 2022 in Pittsburgh. Great show!!! Steve played awesome! Big Props to all in the concert. Peace & Love +++
My sister lives two houses down from Lukather and I’ve always hoped to run into him to say hello when I visit her. I’m afraid I would, no doubt, be “that guy”.
did your sister tell you about the neighbors(probably the house between hers and steve's) who decided to have their landscaping done at like 6am on a sunday with leaf blowers etc? Steve was pissed so the day after that, he rolled his amp outside and at the crack of dawn he plugged in his guitar, dimed the amp and gave the neighbors a shredfest alarm clock including a "good morning" shouted as louad as possible. Lukather is one of a kind andso friggin cool
I could sit and listen to Steve's stories all day. He's always so humble and gracious when speaking of his idols. Such class. We love you Steve!
This is the real Hall of Fame. That other one is a money making situation for Jann Wenner/Rolling Stone.
What Me Worry couldn't agree more. And Steve Miller called them on it.
We hope you visit Nashville and stop by and see us.
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum I'm going to 👍🏼
He's a cool dude. Love how personable and down to earth he is. And, he's only 62. Started Toto in '75, before he was even 20 yrs old... Holy crap!!! Amazing. And, one of the greatest session guys around.
TheJollycoppers, Hydra.
It's like he's describing a dream he had, dinner with Harrison and Dylan on either side of him then jamming with them at Lynn's house. Incredible! I love it. And what a great guy
"That's not the way me and the lads played it." ~George Harrison
Didn't know it, but I do now. This cat is 100% class.
Find it absolutely amazing how this guy is a guitar rock god in his own right, yet he has stayed grounded and humbled and appreciative of everything that comes his way. What a lesson for everyone else. Thanks for sharing this with us!
Everyone has their heroes, even our heroes.
George inspired him to play?
Gee, I'll bet he's the only one who can say that! 😂
Not really. He, George, is why I play too.
Joe Satriani once said George is the most underrated guitarist ever.
LesPaulDisciple, Yep, the Darkhorse.
Clayton: George was GREAT. I freaked when I saw the photo from 'Magical Mystery Tour' of him holding his psychedelic Strat.
The clouds parted and a sunbeam shone down illuminating George and that awesome guitar.
I knew I needed to play the guitar.
That was forty years ago and I'm still partial to Strats.
LesPaulDisciple, I know that Mystery Tour picture well. My walk with George and the lads started before the psych stuff even. Beginning with hearing them on the BBC when I lived in France. Love those Richenbachers still, But I did finally get myself a Strat to add to my stable. In fact I will be playing in a couple hours. It is mana for me and so I gather it is for you. Thanks for sharing your story.
I've heard "'Something" probably 10,000 times.
That solo still gives me chills to this day.
Frodo: George played that solo live in the studio at the same time they were recording the string section.
Steve says about his relationship with Ringo “If he were Bob Smith he would still be my friend” - love that. Was how I felt about Walter Becker. He would give me rides home and we would sit in the back together having a laugh and talking about whatever. The fact that he was Walter Becker was incidental. Miss him
Lukather is a brilliant musician. He once visited my friend's recording studio to lay down some guitar tracks for a friend or relative, and my friend said that he was amazing. He whipped out several brilliant tracks in no time flat, all keepworthy. Just an amazing musician.
What a genuine person he is. I had never taken the time to find any interviews with Steve Lukather. I'm really glad I found this. Great story teller. He talks recording, friendship, people, business and of course making music, all without an attitude. The other part of this interview where he talks about recording Beat it, is a great one too.
He knows how to tell a story...
What a brilliant interview..Ive seen so may great interviews with Steve but this is amazing, the guy is a legend and to hear him talk about George in his humble way is so cool...love this guy..
The mighty Beatles...nothing like them before or will ever be again. Steve was so fortunate to hang out with George, the "quiet Beatle".
@Jim McCracken Oh, yes. No matter how famous or important a musician is, hanging out with a real Beatle has to be the thrill of a lifetime. I am sure Steve and others have pinched themselves many times.
Steve is one of the very very few persons who has played with 3 Beatles!
I'm sure Steven wet his knickers because of his knowing the Beatles. I mean...who wouldn't??
On a much, much smaller scale... I used to be in a club band with Derrek Van Eaton as our lead vocalist. He and his brother, Lon were signed to Apple records and had their album produced by George Harrison. Lon was on several of Ringo's solo albums. (The Van Eaton album was just recently re-released.) One night, Lon and the famous Beatle friend, artist and bass player... Klaus Voorman stepped into the club we were playing at in Glendale, Ca.. We had the great local guitarist, Carlos De La Paz in the band also.
So anyway, when I found out they were both in the club (particularly Klaus) I played my heart on bass that night and walked over and said hello. Klaus liked my bass playing and asked me if I could give him bass lessons! (I was so shocked by that) I mentioned to Lon that Carlos and I were going to Donte's jazz club in L.A. to watch Larry Carlton play with Greg Mathison and one of the Porcaro brothers playing bass in a few days. So we invited Lon to go to Donte's with us and he actually went! That was a great little night of music. Larry was personable and the club was intimate, but we did not meet him.
Anyway, afterward we went to Lon's pad in Hollywood and jammed with Lon. Bob Welch's drummer also was there at the jam. (Bob Welch from the version of Fleetwood Mac and solo artist with the hit, "Ebony Eyes"). A few nights later, Lon's friend "Ritchie" jammed with Lon and Carlos. Ritchie turned out to be RINGO STARR! I was invited to jam, but I didn't go and I did not know that Ringo would be there. Man, to this day I regret not going. LOL Carlos told me Ringo was a very cool, down to Earth guy. Ringo was kind of a family man and showed Carlos a photo of his young son, Zach.
A few days later, I was at Lon and Derrek's pad and Klaus Voorman was there. I told Klaus I was honored to meet such a famous celebrity and he made me laugh, because he said, "Yeah, I am famous because I know those guys, but I have NONE of their money." LOL What was even cooler was for some reason, Klaus had the ORIGINAL piece of artwork with him that he created for the Beatle's album, "REVOLVER" and I actually got to hold it in my hands! What a trip... So these are my little true stories about the Beatles. That was a long time ago! It all happened in 1977. Those were the days, my friends.
I think my favorite incarnation of Bob Welch is the short-lived band that came after Mac, Paris. That song "Black Book" just blows me away, it was my introduction to Welch and while French Kiss was interesting pop I'll never forget that jazzy power-pop/funk in the 2 Paris albums.
Thank you for sharing with all of us!
Joe, as always.... You have done the absolutely best interviews ever! This one included. No one does a better job than you.... Seriously! Thanks for making musician's lives even more interesting!
Thank you Joey... I obviously enjoy it too but it makes my day to hear comments like yours.... Best, Joe
There are always common denominators in stories about Sir George... humility and class.
You know George was never knighted, right? They offered him a Commander of the British Empire the year before he died, and he turned it down. Paul had already been knighted by that point.
Among all the top players he seems very grounded and still speaks sometimes like a fan, despite having been there, done it all.
Knowing John Cleese’s story about George Harrison easily giving money to the Monty Python’s guys to make a film, simply because “he wanted to watch it” says how generous and caring George was.
Great story!! George was other worldly....there will never be anyone like him...I love George!
Great interview. Thanks.
I loved the passing references to Jim Keltner “Of course Jim already knew George Harrison”, “I asked Jim to put in a good word with Ringo”. Lol
Steve is SOOOO under appreciated. This guy is a genius.
Unfortunately, I have only realized this recently. This guy is one of the greats.
No he is not he is rebound as one of the most influential guitarist ever.
Probably the most versatile session rock guitar player ever. I don't say the best because Jimmy Page was a session musician too.
Steve Lukather is one of my all time Favorite Guitar Players, and one of the reasons I gig with a Gold Top Les Paul (Hold The Line Video)
I wonder who under appreciates him..?
If I could play the guitar like anyone, Luke would be one of my first choices. Unbelievably versatile musician with universe-class chops.
Jeff was one helluva drummer...couldn't believe it when he died.
Steve Lukather ...what a humble guy not to mention a fantastic musician , always amazing how revered the individual Beatles are among fellow artists

Massive music fan and wouldn't know the guy from Adam. Know the songs. Not him. Before music TV nobody knew the Pink Floyd from Adam either. Seen them at a football ground with tens of thousands and nobody asked them for an autograph. Or even noticed them.
@@SirPeter6464 Wow. Interesting comment.
Toto was actually founded by Paich and Jeff Porcaro.
Roberto Vidal Garcia Yeah, I know that. But the original comment stated that Luke was a founding member, as in he started the band. Paich and Porcaro started the whole thing, the rest were asked to join.

Pamela Topping - Steve"s treatment of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is my favorite. He is some kind of rockstar.
@Pamela Topping, It is amazing what you learn on RUclips. Thanks for the word about the book.
Clayton Kusaj Absolutely!! The audio version is read by him & definitely the best version! Check it out!!
George Harrison such a great guitarist. So many iconic riffs.
Chip Gaaaaaaaschsesche: You haven't a clue as to what you're talking about. Sorry.
Chip Gash: Gee, Chip; funny I've never heard of you. What do you play--tambourine? Wood blocks? Is there somewhere on RUclips I can bear witness to your awesomeness? Anyway, you narcissistic blowhard, it's not my credentials, or yours, that are at issue here---it's George Harrison's abilities as a guitarist, and your definition of "great" when it comes to musicianship. If that definition doesn't include the guitarist who inspired an entire generation of guitar players with his creativity, sound, and wide-ranging musicality, then it's worth even less than your supposed "credentials".

George to me is by far the worlds best guitar picker , singer , composer , most handsome , and greatest inventor , he did after all invent the Gretsch 6122 and invented most of the guitar chords that we all play today , he is the reason why i started to play guitar , the reason why i stopped playing guitar and the reason why i started back again , George is just tops , the bees knees , and miss him every day , glad i found this youtube clip
Anne6621. I guess you never heard of Chester Atkins. Aka Chet. George’s hero. George was a Beatle and a boss dude tho.

Nice.
The 6122 has been around since like 58. Wasn't George lol. Chet Atkins I believe was the one who originally made it popular.
rarely do i go through a yt vid with a mile-wide grin with hairs standing on end. anecdotal stuff of legend.
Luke is such an immensely talented guy. The fact that he is so respected by other great musicians (including Jimmy Page) says a lot.

He seems like a truly humble guy, and has some pretty amazing stories to tell. Saw him play with The All Starr Band back in 2014 at Pine Knob with Greg Rolie, Todd Rundgren and others, including that Ringo dude. :) Great show.

Can you imagine being a young kid in 1964 like Petty, Springsteen, Steve Van Zandt and Luke getting your mind re-arranged by four mop tops on the Ed Sullivan Show and then sharing a stage and microphone with a Beatle years later?
Great story , The Beatles will always be up there on all musicians hes got great respect for them
Steve seems too modest about himself here, but he's a far more accomplished musician than he lets on. He has 5 Grammys under his belt (3 of which with Toto) and is also considered one of the top 10 session guitarists of his time. (source: wiki)
Doesn't matter who you are, how many number 1 hits, platinum albums or awards you have. If you've interacted with one of the Beatles that moment is probably your greatest moment of your life

Thanks for watching John… best, Joe
What a honest guy. Thank you for this interview.
Cool story...made me smile.
Still one of my favorite songs of all time, written by George Harrison..."SOMETHING".
I love Steve so much since day one with Toto. What amazing stories he has and telling about getting to meet these legends he is like a little kid and so excited. Steve is not a rockstar, that's a compliment. He's very down to Earth and shares the same childlike awe that we all do. Respect!
I love how humble and grateful Steve is.....
That was a great story :) Steve is a very genuine and likeable guy. I can definitely see why George and Ringo took a shine to him.
I have to respect Luke he's made all the right moves in a very competitive industry and he's done everything for the right reasons. He loves music plays guitar like a banshee and has a good sense of humour to boot.
Wow, what a great interview! I got goosebumps on my goosebumps.. Thank you Steve Lukather, for your great stories, your stellar guitar playing and for your humility
George always seemed to be the least approachable of the Beatles. John could spit fire, but so long as you didn’t disrespect him, he always had a fairly decent attitude towards fans. Ringo doesn’t like to sign autographs, he engages when making a planned appearance. Paul is a born crowd pleaser- which put off John, but it was a genuine part of his personality.
Now that we all have access to so many great interviews with great musicians, I'm blown away by how much they all admire each other and how humble so many of the legends are. There are a handful of people on the planet with Mr. Lukather's talent, but he's just a guy telling stories about meeting people he respects. Great stuff!
What a storyteller! This guy has enormous skills with guitar, vocals, songwriting, keyboard, et al., and he can really tell stories, and what stories! Has been an icon for me since my adolescence.
Brilliant player. Musician’s musician. I have seen the “All-Starr’s” with Mr Lukather twice and he excelled amongst all the excellent musicians with whom he shared the stage! Ringo put his arm around him after “Hold the Line” and they enjoyed an off-mic moment of whispers. Then, Ringo let us in on the chat: “That was about the one millionth time he has played that song, and I just had to tell him that this was THE best he’s Ever played!” His solos/outro was absolutely phenomenal - on Ringo’s birthday at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville! Brilliant. Did not know about the friendship then, but Ringo was sincere …
And I was seated across the aisle from Mrs Starr and her sister, Mrs (Joe) Walsh. Not a bad night.❤❤❤
Great interview!😊
This is called respect 🙌. What a era. USA and England = music 🎶 genius
Lukather was never on my radar as a guitarist. And all I know of Toto is is Africa, because of the radio and then Weezer. But I stumbled across one interview, and watched because it was a story about EVH. I'm watching this video because Lukather is so F'n cool and laid back. Now I want to learn about his guitar work.
4:10 Every musician in the world is grinning like......something! :)
This man has lived my dream, and told it so well, great guy and great story , thanks for posting
13:19 This part is truly sad. It's really about who to trust as a real, legitimate friend.
Is say the interviewer a legitimate friend of "Lukie"s or just a regular fan, lucky to have won an interview?
And poor Bob Smith isn't even allowed to get inside the hall, even less the master's chamber where they gather for the beast but can't kill the beast.
They won't be making them like Luke much anymore. Or like many from 30 and 40 years back. Bunch of posers now aimed at 8 year olds.
I love your version of Hitch a Ride by Boston
I was an 8 year old when I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. Changed my life when I was young when I heard The Animals.
I think you would be surprised. Some of the young crop you're talking about are playing music aimed at 8 year olds but they still have some musical chops - it's just that you won't see them play actual instruments because the marketing divisions of their labels have deemed it uncool. This is a few years back now but look at Bruno Mars - I'm not a fan of his music but he's definitely proper multi-instrumentalist. Even Bieber (ugh) plays guitar and drums. Maybe not really well, but he does.
@@hardtohandleweddingbandent8653 - Yep.
:-)
Generalising usually backfires. (I say/write, generalising, ha ha!)
@@hardtohandleweddingbandent8653 I wouldn't compare them to Luke. I think there are guys like him out there, but they're not going to get recognition. Guthrie Govan has probably inspired a few younger guitar players to reach those kinds of heights that aren't interested in making RUclips videos. I think metal is attracting a lot of good players, but they get so caught up in it a lot of times and don't branch out into becoming session guys in multiple styles. I've met some metal guitarists in person that blew my mind at what they were capable of, but if they really applied themselves to learning the intricacies of other styles like Luke they'd have been fucking monsters. I played with a guy for a while who could listen to a whole album and play it back for you note for note all the way through after one listen.
Funny how all these great player are great fans too. Love it.
Hi 1950..... very observant... you are so right and I love it. The best players are the biggest fans... best... Joe
The world needs more Steve Lukather's. What a real dude.
My favorite George Harrison song is “Wah-wah.” One of my favorite songs is “Wah-wah.” One of my favorite pedals, one of my favorite vocal sounds (employed when one of your mates steps in it: descending notes imitation muted trumpet - “Wah-wah-wah-wah...”,) one of the reasons I’m glad I have ears is wah-wah.
FYI that was the first song George recorded for his All Things Must Pass album.
As an aside, the term Wah-wah, in England when George wrote the song, was slang for head ache.
@@shinyoneincarnate5565 Yup, at that time George was fed up with Paul and was thinking of him when he wrote it. Said Paul had given him a Wah-wah.
I'm a drummer that has always had an admiration for great lead guitarists. Steve Lukather is, and has been my favorite for years. If you happen to read this Steve, I love you man. You play with heart and soul, and that is something that cannot be tought.
Steve ticks all the boxes of a rock star but without the ego and arrogance. Maybe that's the secret of a true passionate musician - no matter how big you get, you don't stop being a fan. Hold the Line blew my mind as a kid.
A typical story about George Harrison. A wonderful man who truly cared about people and peace. This video does, however, have a very odd title. It sounds like George came up behind him and said: 'Boo!' - and, actually, that turns out to be pretty close to the truth!
I feel the same way Steve feels about Ringo, about Steve..lol When I was first learning guitar I became aware of Luke by listening to Boz Scaggs, and then when Toto formed, oh man. I’ve been a fan ever since. Steve is one of the best guitar players I have ever heard. He seems like such a great fellow as well. God bless both of these iconic musicians. Love you Ringo and Steve. 🙏🙏 🥁 🎸
I met Steve Lukather many years ago in a grocery store in Van Nuys. He really is as nice a person in real life as he seems in his interviews! And you already know what a stellar musician he is!
Steve Lukather is a real chill dude...great musician...and honest as the day is long...loved this interview.

Steve basically got to jam with the Traveling Wilburys. How cool is that?
Great stories! They had exciting lives.
My stories are like: I drank an iced tea at a Denny's counter in Las Vegas a few times.
Lots of great comments here but this one is by far my favourite. I literally laughed out loud. Thanks for that.
Look up dude in the dictionary. There's a photo of Steve Lukather
Great interview with Steve! What a great guy. I just saw Steve playing with Ringo and the All Starr Band in Pittsburgh this past Saturday. Steve is an incredible musician and really glad I got to see him play.
George inspired him to play?
Gee, I'll bet he's the only one who can say that! 😂
Not really. He, George, is why I play too.
Joe Satriani once said George is the most underrated guitarist ever.
I love this story that I heard from someone who claims they were there..... so some guy named Wolf Blass [who owns a winery in South Australia] was engrossed in conversation with this guy at a social occasion; they really hit it off. They spoke apparently for a long time. Eventually Wolf asks him what he did for a living; he answered "I'm an unemployed musician". Within 1 minute Wolf had turned his back on him and found someone else to talk to... .the person he turned his back on was George Harrison..
Great interview. Here is a little story that illustrates Steve's integrity. I am at the NAMM show, 1994 at the Ernie Ball booth and there are Luke, EVH and Nuno Bettencourt all signing at a table together. Holy shit right? I get to Luke and tell him sincerely that I think about Jeff Porcaro everyday and though I never met the man I feel like I had known him for ages...Luke gets up from behind the table and gives me a huge hug. ME, a total stranger too. Without a doubt, in my humble opinion, Luke is the best axeman on the planet. Listen to that amazing little Spanish Guitar solo on Mushanga and then listen to his burning AMAZING solo on Jake To The Bone.....come on. No one has the resume of Luke. Am listening to Patti Austins Do You Love Me right now...Luke tearing it up as usual. Thanks again for the great interview. If anyone does not have Lukes book, GET IT. The stories are killer.
Luke is SUCH an amazing guitarist!! I’ve been in love with him and Toto since I first heard a note…😊😘
i always imagined George Harrison after the 90 being great music arranger and composer of film's soundtrack and songs ,cause his musicality went beyond than the other three Beatles.
carl perkins ...i wish we got to know.him more..he was more closed off the other beatles
Great interview and stories… until recently I kinda thought of Steve as a phenom solo/lead player… but have been introduced to his amazing rhythm playing that is easy to take for granted but really makes the tune
