- Steve Lukather, David Paich and Steve Porcaro of multi-platinum band Toto tell the amazing story of the #2 hit Rosanna from the 1982 blockbuster album Toto IV. Inspired by actress Rosanna Arquette who along the way her magnetism and piercing blue eyes have captivated several rock luminaries such as Peter Gabriel who wrote In Your Eyes about her. In the early 80s, Arquette was in a romantic relationship with rocker Steve Porcaro, the coveted keyboardist for Toto, and one of the most sought after session musicians. Toto bandmate & fellow virtuoso, David Paich, who was always searching for real life inspiration to write lyrics and song titles, was working on a tune about a girl he dug in high school.Since the relationship between Porcaro & Arquette was hot & heavy at the time, he decided to title his un-named song "Rosanna." This is the story of the song straight from the members of Toto.

Hey Music Junkies, Professor of Rock , always here to celebrate the greatest artists and songs of all time; If you love music, you'll want to subscribe below and part of our community where you'll get daily content celebrating the rock era. Also FYI this week on Patreon we've done a video on behind the scenes of a hilarious few hours we spent with the late Eddie Money you can access that in the link below.
Toto has always been a favorite of mine. The first Toto song I heard was Rosanna at 6 years old. I begged my parents for the song, and one day my dad came home with the 45. I must've listened to it a hundred times in the first week.
I've had the unique privilege of interviewing Steve Lukather and David Paich 3 times and I have to tell you, it's always amazing when the picture you've painted of a band in your head over years of listening not only matches their live performance but also lives up to who they are as people. Luke and Paich are two of the nicest guys in the industry. Not only two of the greatest songwriters and players in history, they're also wonderful story tellers. Here's what they said about the early days of the band:
Rosanna Arquette has caught the attention of millions throughout her extensive acting career, With prominent roles in such movies as After Hours, Desperately Seeking Susan, Nobody's Fool, and New York Stories.
Since the relationship between Porcaro & Arquette was hot & heavy at the time, he decided to title his un-named song "Rosanna.":
Like all of Toto's instrumental arrangements, "Rosanna" was created with superlative musicianship.
The late Jeff Porcaro, Toto's highly-acclaimed drummer, kicks off the track with a crafty 'half-time shuffle' drum beat affectionately called the "Rosanna Shuffle."
Jeff's brother, Steve Porcaro, delivers a swirling synthesizer interchange in the bridge, followed by a tasty Steve Lukather guitar soloLuke unleashes another face-melting solo as the track's at the end of the extended album version.
In addition to the expert musicianship of the respective members of Toto, the recording of "Rosanna:" featured the additional all-star talent of the revered session player Jerry Hey on trumpet
Chicago's James Pankow (pan-koe) on trombone
Tom Scott on Sax And Tom Kelly on backing vocals
Lukather sings the first verse and the third verse of "Rosanna," and then turns lead vocal duties over to Bobby Kimball. So let's pause for a second and talk about Bobby Kimball for a second. The power of his voice on this song is on par with Peak MIKE TYSON. He goes jab jab jab and then an Iron Mike like uppercut that put the fight out of reach. when he sings Rosanna twice.belting with a faithful rock ferocity.
At this moment in time Toto was truly in their element. In my opinion they were like the 1927 Yankees or the 93 Chicago Bulls. Unbeatable. THeir Musicianship, their sense of melody, their songcraft. Almost unprecedented and don't forget they had just spent the 5 years prior and some years after playing on thousands of the biggest records of the ear that collectively sold over half a billion copies that collectively amassed 225 grammy nominations.
Which if you think about it by today's standard is even more astounding, where nobody buys music anymore. They are just the greatest. Truly, I've said it before, They are too good for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Anyway. Видеоклипы
This is the only series on RUclips that makes me watch on my TV !
I know im asking randomly but does any of you know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account..?
I was stupid forgot my login password. I love any help you can give me!
@Aarav Raylan instablaster ;)
See Rick Beato. You’ll have two. Thank me later.
"Africa" is a great song, but "Rosanna" is...monumental.
Its true
Comment of the decade this one.
It's really quite interestingly put together, there's a lot of moving parts but they all work.
Amen to that!
And yet Hold The Line is my favorite.
Toto is like a perfectly tuned Ferrari. Every member of the band incredible and they created awesome stuff
More like a Porsche imho. Excellent engineering, awesome design.
Jeff Porcaro just came up with one of the most legendary grooves on the spot. What an absolute talent.
FFThat groove is courtesy of Bernard Purdie and known as the Purdie shuffle. Porcaro is awesome but that's who he was into ( admittedly into) as well as Bonham's performance on Fool in the Rain which give him for the inspiration for the drum track on Rossana. Not taking anything away from him but it simply was not his invention
Luk: "The second take is what you hear. That's the record." .. jaw drop.
That's why today's music don't stand a chance to be remembered. No talent.
Quite a few songs were first and second takes back then.
Yep. When giants walked the earth. I was in a band in Detroit in 1982 when every other song on the radio was today's classic. we didn't know how great it really was until we've been burdened with mediocrity for the last 20 years. No one today is even close. No one
@@Scottocaster6668 all respects but the musicianship today is as good if not better. There's some serious musicianship. Now as far as rock music and song craftsmanship, I have to agree that you just don't hear the music today like you heard back then. There's still some incredible bands and songs but they don't get the attention like they did.
@@justinfontaine9069 What band were you in? I was playing in bar bands, and working with Joe and Fred from Mugsy/Weapons for a bit, and then with Duffy King in the 80's.
RIGHT? holy cow!!!
Toto was and is one of the best group of rock musicians of all time, without question.
I'm glad that Toto is finally getting the respect that they deserve.
The respect has alway's been there amongst musician's and fan's of them, most other people wouldn't know. They're listening to Brittany Spears, Justin Bieber, or old school (never really had talent to begin with) Jennifer Lopez etc.... or an array of people who should be nobodies.
Kept telling my friends in High School and they would not listen..
They have always been one of my favorite bands, always wish they got more recognition.
@@craigedwards2940Like what Metallica said, "Sad but true".
For anyone that is interested, Rick Beato did a "What makes this song great" episode on this song where he breaks it down and isolates the tracks for analysis. I rediscovered how amazing this song and these musicians really are.
Yeah. There's so many nuances per instrument. The vocal harmonies are atreat to listen to, even the spaces they put on the piece have purpose! And don't forget the tasty solos and super cool jam session at the end till fade! I love that episode of Rick Beato. 😁
It's a brilliant song and Beato shows the intricacies that are woven together. Both provide justification that the song is top shelf
Great job by Rick
I like Rick’s videos where he isolates the tracks. This one was one of the first Beato videos I saw and I subbed his channel immediately.
On the subject of isolated tracks, if you aspire to feel like you’re in the band, there are videos out there of Rosanna with isolated tracks and others where all the tracks are there except the one you want to play so you can pick your instrument and play along with the original recording. I’ve done that with the bass several times and it’s a lot of fun
TOTO is not only the best band in my opinion, and has made 40+ years of amazing music, but they are also criminally under-rated. Luke is probably one of, if not the best living guitarists.
One of the best musicians. They're underrated by the audience. But are well respected by music industry. Truly one of the best.
No I love them
@James Smith Home of the Brave is a great rock tune by them. everything they do is great!
What is also amazing about Luke is that he has done lead vocals on some of Toto’s biggest hits along with writing amazing hit songs (The Tubes, George Benson as well as Toto). He played bass on “Beat It” as well as the Tubes “Talk to You Later”. He is such an amazing musician and writer/singer.
@@chrislestermusic I am going to see Toto in April. They are touring with Journey. I have been listening to Toto's Catalog. They are so much better than Journey!
Jeff Porcaro is probably my biggest influence as a drummer
My wife puts on a Yacht rock station and every other song Jeff was playing
Mine too. He just had a gift.
GOAT
Meachster - I recently saw a video with Jeff Porcaro that you should see- if you haven't already. What an amazing human being. ruclips.net/video/dQ6tzbKsKKk/видео.html
Me too. He was just incredible, his groove was just, the best!
Toto has the most complex and beautiful melodies that really make my mind satisfied when I listen.
Dune 1984 Soundtrack blew my mind.
"All roads lead to Toto." - written on my tombstone
People just don't know how true that is, especially in the 80s/90s!
I'm of an age where I was fascinated with the entire first Toto album. Rosanna was awesome, Africa was stellar but overall, that first record was legendary.
I'm a Simple man.. I See Toto, I click, I like.
Same...(well, Simple Woman...)
Another simple man right here, too 🤘
Second take is the record we hear? OMG.....these guys are all Savants.
I was lucky to meet David Paich at a gig in LA a few years ago. I was a huge fanboy and told him the solo from Rosanna was the first piano solo I ever learnt when I was young and it inspired me to become a musician. He laughed and said they had a tour coming up and that I should come around and teach it to him as he's probably forgotten it!! ha ha
So, So glad I was alive, and a teen during this time. You're right Professor, there will NEVER be another time in music like there was in the 1980's. Heck, they can't even make any music these days, which is proof of our statements. It will never happen again. The 80's were pure magic, and from every genre!!! Fact!!
The ghost notes Jeff hits in the drum beat are insanity. Truly remarkable
I am 57, I started to listen to rock and pop music around 1970. Yeah I was young, only 7 back then. I listened to the radio both AM and FM for most of the 70's. I then was 18 and dove in headfirst in all the 80's and 90 stuff. I was gifted the time and place of hearing all this great music as it was being made and released. I may be getting old. But my time of growing up was the height of the music business, and I loved every minute of it. I still do.
Toto is the most incredible band that no one is obsessed with. It’s just like, a bunch of dads that absolutely kick ass?
The same person signed Toto & Eddie Money. His first name was Don & his last name was Ellis. I knew him pretty well.
It was you? Wow very cool.
Ok you gotta fess-your dad? If so tell him thanks!!
@@jwprimetime9795 He's deceased , but thank you !
@@Lance37a ...lol no lance. it was Don. Not David!!..lol David was Married to Don. He knew him pretty well!!. P.S. if The brothers ever find out who i am ? im in for a ASS WIPPIN!! LMFAO!!
Wait. THE Don Ellis? Big band leader? I was at the live recorded San Francisco shows. Astonishing. That album deserves a major re-release...
Steve Lukather is a friggin legend.
Lukather's outro solo on Rosanna is one of the greatest moments on 6 strings. As stellar as the song is, it a delivery system for the licks at 4 min 59 sec.
Lukather is ungodly on this song. And I agree, the outro is legendary.
Jeff.....what a drummer wow, there ain’t many in his league
This is true.
I've been told that I do the intro perfectly.. Its a very radical piece
I Won't Hold You Back, Africa, Rosanna, Hold The Line... gotta love Toto!!!
Dont forget Goodbye Girl
I'll Be Over You........
That epic Porcaro "Purdy" half-time shuffle... Pure genius!
I own almost every Toto album. By all means a great band. You did an outstanding job on this presentation of Toto. Thank you!
One of the MOST iconic drum grooves of all time! 🔥
Toto unmatched 💯 absolute legends , cannot be mimicked they sre the real Mcoy . ❤🎉🎉🎉
"Rosanna" is simply my favorite song of all time. So rich and layered throughout, with every facet of it perfect.
*Call me crazy, but I get the impression that the Professor of Rock **_REALLY LIKES_** Toto!*
You are Crazy- but you are NOT wrong. hahaha I love Toto too. It helps that the band members themselves are really wonderful people.
this isn't Kansas anymore.....wait err
That's what's so fun about this channel. Whatever song or band Adam is talking about, he's always like, "Everyone on the planet would literally be DEAD... if it wasn't for this song." He cracks me up.
@@honeychilerider @Professor of Rock
The passion of the Professor of Rock is sincere and clearly rooted in treasured memories from his youth!
Could it be because thats exactly what he says at the start of the video?
I love to crank this tune. I also love "I'll supply the love" (a forgotten hit from the late 70s) and "Without your love". Toto is an amazing group.
The thing that struck me and continues to strike me with Toto is their incredible musicianship. This song is so elaborate and so perfectly executed, and through their later albums, even though they never had the same commercial success, their music never fails to impress. Thanks for a great video.
Last time I was this early I was in 5th grade having my first schoolboy crush and Rosanna playing on the FM boombox.
Toto was my first live concert I ever went to. That was 1982 at The Heart of Illinois Fair. I will never forget hearing Rosanna live. Still brings back great memories and has definitely stood the test of time!
I really enjoyed your commentary about this classic song by Toto. I also like the songs "99" and "Hold The Line".
The musicality of 99 is unmatched.
Hold The Line was the song I chose as my first when I took guitar lessons. It’s an amazing song I liked from day one of hearing it on am radio (God I feel old 😂)
They are my favorite. I bought Lukathers book The Gospel. it was excellent
Toto IV was my first CD i ever bought...and I didn't even have a CD player! I knew I would get one someday so I just bought it and used my friends to make a tape to hold me over until I could get a new system. Great album...incredible group!
Too funny, Matt!
Toto WAS the Wrecking Crew of the 1970s and 1980s. Except they also recorded some epic albums. Hungate, Paich, and Jeff Porcaro co-wrote and were masterful on IMO one of the Top 10 singles of the rock/R&B era: Lowdown, fronted by Boz Scaggs. Hydra IMO is Toto's best album, a fusion of rock, jazz, R&B, and prog rock that stands the test of time.
We need a return to something called music because today's version, 2021 just isn't cutting it.
80s music was simply the best!!!!
Another knockout video, Professor 👍
Rosanna Arquette is perhaps second only to Patti Boyd Harrison as the greatest ever muse in rock history. She’s inspired sooooo many classic songs. Gotta be cool for her when she hears all those tunes about her.
Jeff Porcoro gets my vote as the best session drummer of the rock era. Nothing the guy couldn’t do. So creative.
Btw when Lukather mentioned they were playing songs from Steely Dan’s Katy Lied - at high school dances - even before the album came out...holy $h_t 😂 That’s a school dance you don’t wanna miss.
And don't forget Michelle Pfeiffer...
2 songs that were at least a top 40... Wow. Riptide and Uptown Funk.
And she's still hot may I add....
I'd say Jeff was great on the swing tunes but the straight ones and the more progressive Toto stuff wasn't exactly his cup of tea (and don't get me wrong, I view Jeff as one of the greatest ever!). Especially when you listen to the original recording of the song Hydra and compare the drumming with the live version Simon Philips did. This song is Simon's home turf and honestly he did a better job on it than Jeff did. But for shuffles, Jeff is untouchable.
Koko approves 😉
I'm sorry I missed those!
Lenny Castro added a great percussion bed to this track 👍
back in 1986, I was 14 years old, had a dishwashing job at the local golf course where I lived at the time. one weekend I had saved enough money and got the itch to go shopping, and came across this fairly cheap CD Player at the Flea Market, not a top name brand by any means, but I decided to buy it and a CD to go along with it, my very 1st CD was TOTO IV. I had heard Africa on the radio quite a few times, but never heard Rosanna till that day I bought the CD and CD Player... its my favorite TOTO Song!
Steve Lukather is so fun to listen telling stories. He has worked with so many great musicians and singers.
Summer of 1982 songs after my senior year of HS. Brings back so many memories. It may be the best collection of music ever.
I'm old so the first Toto song I remember is "99". Love these guys.
Professor of rock really expresses with passionate detail the way all feel inside about this music. What an enthusiasm and admiration. What a wonderful way of breaking down every detail with insides, hidden connections and fun facts. Thank you, Professor. Give us more !
My personal favorite of the band, and indeed the perfect example of them all in their element. Luk's second solo along with the piano jamming on the ride out are truly icing on a fantastic gourmet "cake". Perfect song, perfectly arranged and performed, along with all the x-factors mentioned, (Jeff's inventive groove, Luk's superb soloing, Kimball's soaring vocals. I can't say enough about this tune and how much it rocks!
"Rosanna" is a certifiable classic!
I saw Toto live in Puerto Rico, in 83 or 84. Amazing. Best band ever. But my fave ballad of them is 99, from the best record ever made: HYDRA.
I was 14 years old in ‘82, Remember These Tunes Very, Very Well... My Favorite Luke tunes are; I Won’t Hold You Back and Ill Be Over You, Great Ballads....Memories!!!
I play one of those 2, sometimes both of them EVERY DAY. I wish I could hug Steve Lukather & thank him for writing/co-writing them. Then he hits you with the guitar solos on them. They don't make enough awards for this guy's talent.
My mum was over to America in the summer of 82 from Ireland and Rosanna was the top hit along with Do You Want Me, Heat Of The Moment and Eye of the tiger were just songs she will remember and mesmerised because of how good they were and the memories they left her.
This channel NEVER disappoints and just keeps on getting better! 🙌🏻
My first Toto album was Hydra. I was 18 in the Army at Fort Carson, CO (my first duty station). Love their music!
Rosanna was the first rock song I heard when I got a transistor radio for my birthday. Introduced me to a whole new world of music beyond the stuff my parents listened to.
I have Loved ToTo music since 1982 when believe it or not Rosanna hit the radio! ToTo's 25th Anniversary concert is what i consider perfection of a live concert!
They remind me of my gran-grandfather, he played in a small trio, and I was as kid always challenging him, like, I'm sure you cannot play that, hits from that time, and then he told me, sing it for me, 4 bars and they got it, unbelievable.
That "The Seventh One" shirt got to me. My favourite Toto album hands down.
Truly the Golden Age of music, Professor!
One of the best bands IMO. Always loved Toto. Then as I read more about the band I discovered that they played on most of the other songs I grew up on and loved. I lost count of how many records and tapes and CDs that I have worn out only to buy again. I guess that's one good reason to be grateful for digital. Thank you Professor of Rock!!!!
Steve's outro solo on Rosanna is cool. But the whole Toto 4 album is fantastic.👍
First introduction to Toto was Hold the Line, then Rosanna then next song was superb... 'I'll be over you' such a great song written by Steve L and Randy Goodrum also sung by Steve L and Joseph Williams (son of composer John Williams). Adjustment to Cynthia Rhodes, she married to Richard Marx for about 28 years 1989 to 2017. They had met a in the early '80s and started dating in 1987-88.
Toto will always be legendary. I've listened to them on almost a daily basis for decades. Rosanna and Africa are simply awesome
Musicianship wise man to man Toto are the most skilled band of all time.
I loved TOTO IV and still have the vinyl LP from 1982. I was 21-22 years old and these guys rocked. Thanks for this piece.
I’ve also owned this LP since it came out. Not one bad song in it, straight play through, album. It’s just pretty perfect.
The band of all stars. They killed it.
No joke I was dating a girl in college Rosanna when this came out. Still one of my favorite songs to this day
One of my favorite songs. Thanks for making 2020 a little brighter!
One of my all time favorite songs. Another great video, professor. Thank you!
Fabulous!! Absolutely fabulous!!
Nothing like 80's music 🎶. Thank you for this. Such interesting stories. It seems like young people today are more interested in burning down businesses than making music.
A great song, a great video and a great, passionate video about a great song and a great video.
Thank you Professor, Luke and David.
RIP Jeff, Mike and Papa Joe.
One of the best bands ever.
3 different lead singers on their biggest hits
These guys are just gold.
I've watched this clip from your other posts and I always catch myself with a big smile listening and watching Luke and Paich talk. Just a feel good story tell.
Your videos are so awesome! So many great stories from the 80s! Thanks!
So many songs I wish I could hear for the first time again. Totally agree with you on that.
Wonderful interview of such amazingly cool guys ! Thank you for this amazing video !
You Rock, I learned so much about this beloved song which I’ve been in luv with for many years! I can’t wait for more! Rosanna also gives me goosebumps when I sing it along with Toto, keep on truckin dude 🎼
Epic band and the Rosanna song and video were classic! Every time that song comes on it brings me back to an amazing time!
Outstanding sir love their music
Thanks for taking me back to my childhood..
Toto is the greatest band on the planet. Some day they may get there due.
Another home run, Champ! You hit this one right outta da park. Great post!
Love this album. One of my favorites
Professor you can do a Toto video every week and I so will not complain!!! These guys are GODS!
Just discovered this channel and am blown away; subscribed immediately! As a kid of the 70s and 80s, these are the songs I grew up with and to this day, Toto is my all-time favorite band. Rosanna was my first introduction to Toto and I remember listening to it on hot summer days at my public swimming pool from the jukebox. Great memories. I look forward to going down the rabbit hole of this channel. Cheers!
Man I love ur musical genius of all varieties thank u my friend for ur podcast
Toto will always be my fav!!!! Loved this!
Back in the 80s the Billboard Top-10 was always epic. Every song would end up being iconic and generation-lasting. Not so today. Most people have never even heard of the groups singers or songs in the current Top-10 and they will be forgotten in 6 months.
Great video ❤️🎶🎶❤️ Thnkx Professor. 🌝
Bringing these songs back up from obscurity along with the interviews, you are making us hear them again for the first time 😉👍. Nice work!
Me and my friends were huge Journey fans when Toto 1 came out. We were instantly hooked.
this band changed my life!!! as a musician and as a lover of music. great vid!!
Have always loved their music. And I still do.
met these guys many times they are so humble and nice Steve and David have great hearts take care guys !
I'm glad you took a moment for Bobby Kimble. One of the greatest vocalists ever. One of my favorites.
Once again Great vid bro! Lukather is one of my heroes. It's great to see these guys still getting along. Keep up the great work
As a drummer it was fun learning that song and Jammin to it at 20 years old.
My Mom would come in every time I played to it cause she loved the song to.
Great memories
Still Jammin
