I will never forget how nice she was in a situation where she didn't expect to meet a fan. I've always seen this song as such a power song, when she says hit me with your best shot, I've always felt like "hit me, I can take it" with the line "I'll get back on my feet again" basically just iterating "I'll go down but always get back up"
Never seen it as a sexual thing, just a song full of confidence and power.

Definitely a memory song for me. I was divorced with 2 young daughters in my mid twenties, PAINFULLY shy, but I could sing. I had offers from a couple of metro Detroit area club bands, but decided that wasn't the kind of mommy image I wanted to present to my 2 little girls. So I got into a couple of Christian groups, singing for the Lord instead of singing for money. One group was rock gospel, and we did some great music. This was one of a couple of songs that Bob, our lead guitar player, always liked for us to warm up with. He loved the guitar solo. I loved to rock those vocals. The guys would jokingly call me 'Peggy Benatar'. When singing . . . I could be that strong, self confident person that I wasn't in real life. By the end of my twenties, I had found more of that strength and self confidence in my own soul.

As a female who grew up in the 80’s as a product of baby-boomer parents who instilled rather Victorian values of what it meant to “act like a lady,” “Hit me with your best shot” was EARTH SHATTERING for me. This song blasted the doors wide open for me. I began to see myself, not as “of the weaker sex”, but as EMPOWERED. This song didn’t mean ANYTHING about men hitting women, or about actual shooting, it meant, “Whatever you’ve got, bring it Baby, because I CAN HANDLE IT. I am stronger than whatever garbage you are trying to throw at me.” Seriously…BOOM! This was mind-blowing and life altering to me. To this day, it is my life anthem. Cancer? “HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT!” I’m really sad to hear that Pat “retired” this song. It’s too bad she couldn’t see it from another perspective.

Not pushing a political party or Sarah Palin, but in one of her ads, she used a crosshair and indicated she was targeting a certain city or state to get their vote. The nutty controlled-Left said -- w/o proof [because they just made it up] -- that this was condoning violence. I too, am a product of the 80s and just loved this song and also thought it was about taking on others or the like who thought that they could defeat me. One thing that strikes me about Pat and Neil is that they must be one of the hardest-working couples in the music business. When Pat's career started to take off, she was playing in Houston (my home town) on such a frequent basis that I started to get the impression that she was a local act. Actually, they played Houston so often because a strong fan following had developed there, but she and her band were still playing nation-wide too. Man, did all that work and constant touring pay off! While I'm a little disappointed that she retired this song from her live set list, I really admire this woman.

Anybody that grew up in the '80s (or ever watched Fast Times At Ridgemont High) could tell you how big of an impact Pat Benatar had in the music industry and in pop culture. She was everywhere! Sex symbol to the guys, role model for the girls. I remember in Jr. High I was in 9th grade and my sister was in 7th grade. She was in the school band and they had a show for the students. I can't remember all the songs they played, but I do remember hearing Hit Me With Your Best Shot. All the songs were just the music playing, no vocals. The band did a great rendition of it. And I felt kinda weird because I was actually proud of my little sister. She played an instrument after the band instructor told me I had no rhythm and couldn't keep a beat. She made the family suffer through her practicing her clarinet for the show. But I was proud of the results. Goes back 40 years to admit that.

I had my own opinion about this matter with my wife who informed me this song was one of those songs that gave her strength to push through life. We both shortened the opinion that like so many famous songs, these songs are truly owned by the public. Those people with whom each song had a hand in shapping all our lives, that yes legally it's the artist's song, but socially it is not. Doesn't the artist have the social responsibility to listen to the people with whom these songs molded their fans into the people they are today?

With that being said, it's possible that another artist could "take over" a song and make it theirs. There are plenty of cover songs that became more famous as a cover song than the song by the original artist. Whitney Houston's cover of I Will Always Love You, for example, was originally written and recorded by Dolly Parton. It was even a hit for Dolly on the Country charts, but Whitney's version is arguably the better known version nowadays. Wikipedia was pretty sketchy on covers of Hit Me With Your Best Shot, only mentioning Kelly Clarkson performing the song live.

It's an Anthem of the underdog, "get back up on my feet again" how could you interpret it any other way? Especially after singing it LIVE, and seeing with your own eyes, and hearing in real time how people react to it....

As a kid, when I first discovered Pat Benatar, it was 1988 and her song "All Fired Up" was all over MTV. I asked my mom if she had any of Pat's other music and she loaned me her copy of the "Best Shots" album where I stumbled upon what would become the song that pretty much saved my life and that song was "Hell Is For Children". At the time, I was being harmed by a neighbor and nobody knew what was happening and that song spoke to me, like there was someone out there who understood what I was going through and clearly voiced all of the pain and hurt that I had.
20-something years later, everything came full circle. My friends took me to a Pat Benatar concert and somehow got backstage passes as well for my 30th birthday, which my friends decided to celebrate in the summer. When it got near the end of the show, I watched as Pat started to give her little speech about the song and how they always played it live in solidarity for victims past and present, I instantly started crying because I knew what song it was! It had been lightly raining for most of the show but for some reason it started raining a bit harder once she started "Hell Is For Children" and once she got to the heavy Rocking part at the end, I was screaming every word with tears in my eyes! We were maybe like 2nd or 3rd row and Pat made eye contact with me and threw a fist in the air my way.
When I got to meet her and Neil backstage, I instantly started crying again as I told them the whole story of what had happened to me and how that song both saved my life and became an anthem for me to keep going. Before I left, I got a big hug from Pat, a picture with her and Neil, and my copy of "Precious Time" on vinyl signed by her and Neil with the saying "Survivors are rock stars and you are one"

I Think it’s ridiculous that she won’t sing it anymore. It’s her biggest hit, not my personal favorite Pat Benatar song, but it was the money maker 21:25 for her. There’s too much going on with this MeToo movement and the gun control thing. It’s a song. Simply a song. You don’t have to make a social statement out of it. No one was even entertaining those ideas back in the 80s, when this song came out. It could be an anthem in a sports arena, it can be a break my heart song but I’ll get back up, it can be perceived so many ways. It’s a shame because I’m sure many of her fans are going to her shows hoping to hear this song. Again it’s not my favorite Pat Benatar song. I saw Pat and Neil last July at a casino in northwest Indiana. She still puts on a powerful show. This was shortly after she decided not to perform Hit Me in her shows. She took a few minutes to explain why they weren't going to perform the song. It was shortly after the July 4th shooting in Highland Park, IL. Rock On Pat!

She ruined the song for herself. Making it a gun song. It isn’t. Just a song. A good one.I wonder what her husband thinks of her decision? Bet it’s different.

    • @SkylaneGuy
      @SkylaneGuy Год назад

She obviously knows it’s not about guns. The point is she is not performing one of her most popular songs as a personal statement against the proliferation of gun violence. The fact that she never really liked the song is just a bonus.

When that song came out I first heard it because we had it in middle school band for the marching side and a bigger version for stage band. I just liked everything about Pat Benatar's music. It was also a time when I was exposed to more bands that I got into like Pink Floyd, Police, Men at Work, etc.... Great times for music.

Thank you thank you for talking about one of my ALL TIME LADY SINGERS from my childhood and teenage days; even still to this day!! There were and other many many other wonderful and great lady singers and lady bands too but PATTY stole my heart musically speaking and forever will until whenever my life disappears away from me!!
Ist time (and many many times to come via multi radio play) the radio dj at the time (on way my to school 4th grade bus morning ride daily)heard this song daily and not paying attention at 1st because I was too busy talking to other kids on the school bus) then it “hit me” musically speaking constantly radio playing Hit Me With Your Best FINALLY GOT ME every morning; I’ve been a fan of hers since then (and the rest is HERSTORY) I STILL have all my ORIGINAL cassette tapes (then many years later buying and still have my VHS, CDs, records, DVDs and some posters and pictures of all Pat Benatar ) to this day!! I’ve seen her a few times in concert too❤️😀❤️😀❤️
So basically Pat did “Hit Me With HER Best Shot” every morning school bus ride I’ll never ever forget; so thanks whoever was the local morning radio DJ at that time introducing me to her music during my early childhood days and I’ve been a fan since then AFTER finally listening to her song numerous times and she “got me” and me ignoring other kids briefly later on……

Equating hit me with your best shot to anything but what it was meant to symbolize, is like equating “I love my children” to something sexual.
    Pats off her rocker😂

In the 80s, a local taco shop had this song on an old jukebox by the counter. They always played Pat Benatar and Joan Jett for me for free! Both artists make me hungry for burritos now. 😂

I was a teenager in the '80s and I also had a background in Opera so I fell in love with Pat Benatar and sang many of her songs at my own auditions.
Hit me with your best shot is a wonderful song, but not my favorite that she's done.
I loved things like my Clone sleeps alone, and Hell is for children, and her version of Wuthering Heights.
I respect her as an artist today as much as I did then. Thank you for this wonderful episode❤

I didn't recognise the song title but knew it instantly when you played a clip. Pat has such a great rock voice, one of the best. It can't be easy for a songwriter to fully accept a song that isn't theirs, that detail is always there and can't be escaped.
It's also nice to see a love at first sight relationship actually work out. So many stars talk about it and finding their soul mates (or whatever), only for it to end a within a year or two. Good for her.

A song is whatever the writer, singer or listener wants it to be.
As a Canadian when I hear this song all I can visualize in my mind, is a tough hockey game ever since I was 10. I've never associated it with anything else, to me it was a sports anthem.
She's my favorite solo artist for over 40 years, but if Hell is for children, All Fired Up and Hit Me With Your Best Shot aren't on the set list together. I would consider the night a total failure for myself 😔
Some songs just put one's self in their happiest place, unfortunately some people have an alternate universes to others happy place.
