- For a short time in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, the band Toto was on top of the world. With pop-rock hits like “Hold the Line,” “Rosanna,” and of course “Africa,” the band was a radio favorite, even if they were never loved by critics. Even though the band included three brothers -- or perhaps because of it -- there was constant in-fighting and drama, and it seems that tragedy has followed them for decades. @@jamesball5743 Hey man to each their own. I wouldn't try to insult your tastes, because what people find to be "cool" in music is very subjective. I understand that to a non-musician Toto comes off as passe. If you feel like listening to a few lesser known tracks from them it might give you a better idea of where I'm coming from. Sometimes it takes a lot of maturity and experience to be able to listen past the surface level of music which can turn people off, and get into the ideas, the compositions, the delivery, the chops. Anyways take care.
The musicianship from this group is unmatched.
I've seen Toto in concert 5 or 6 times since 2013, all but one with meet and greet passes. They are by far the coolest and most talented group of musicans ever essembled. They say don't meet your heroes, but Steve Lukather is honestly one of the most humble and respectable people alive today.
My son and I really enjoyed meeting Steve.
He seems cool, saw his Rick Beoto interview. Afriend of mine did alot of percussion and backround vocals w them in the earlly 80s ,Lenny Castro.

The memebers of Toto have been such a big part of the music history. They have played on over 5000 albums, have a combined sales of halv a billion records, have 225 Grammy nominations, and played a big part in the most succesfull album of all time: Thriller. It is not an exaggeration to estimate that 95% of the world’s population has heard a performance by a member of TOTO.
Besides Michael Jackson they have also worked with Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Bryan Adams, Steely Dan
, Barbra Streisand, Madonna, Lionel Ritchie. And this is just on the top of my head, im sure Im forgetting a few.

All very underrated musicians. Though Bobby Kimball was more recognized for Toto's success, the band wouldn't have been the same without David Paich. Love "All us Boys" and "Hydra".
Guitarist Steve Lukather is no joke. He's an excellent guitarist.

As a guitar player myself I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment.
I remember when I first started getting into music in the early 90s as a teenager, and you'd see Steve Lukather and Michael Landau on virtually EVERY album as session guitarists. They apparently played on thousands of songs in the 80s.

I love this band. Saw an amazing Peter Frampton live show with special guest Steve Lukather in 2013. My mind was completely blown, checked out Lukather's solo stuff and then realized he was a member of Toto. Then started listening to Toto and became a big fan. Luke, David Paich, all porcaro brothers, and David Hungate played on so many people's records. The group Toto influenced me to want to be a session player!
What you failed to mention in the video is that Toto was a band who played on Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, Seals and Crofts, Michael Jackson (Thriller), and MANY other albums! Hands down by far, some of the best musicians.

I never get tired of listening to Toto's music. They a great musicians. Home of The Brave, Mushanga, Rosanna, I Will Remember You, Going Home (Bobby Kimball version), Angel Don't Cry and Africa are my favorites among others.

When it comes to Toto and " the critics" that old saying "those that can, do, and those that can't , criticize ... I'd much rather listen to "Toto" than the critics.
Toto's music is still relevant today, and those critics are long gone. In fact the critics made themselves relevant by criticizing Toto.

Lukather and Porcaro both played on Beat It, as well as other Thriller songs, one of MJ’s best selling albums, iirc. They were considered the best when it came to session musicians.
I am from the hinterlands of the north eastern rainforests of India, even I know that in terms of musicianship each of these guys are untouchable - they are MOST RESPECTED throughout the world.
Toto is probably the most recorded band of all time when you look at all the albums and hit songs they’ve appeared on. They’ve played on more than 5000 albums (they were the studio band on Thriller, the best-selling album ever) and appeared on countless hits that weren’t their own. I can’t believe Rolling Stone passed them off as some useless pop group, they were much more than that.

Like most critics you devalued them with this piece and failed to discuss indepth the talent/contributions of Joseph Williams and David Paich and the tremendous amount of music and longevity/loyalty to each other they have shown over 40 years. Toto XIV is an off the charts awesome record. If this band is not soon put in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame then something is drastically wrong.

For my own part, one of the things that I have taken away from Toto IV as an album is how the recording equipment is intended as a tool for getting the music recorded, not intended to play the music for you. Sure, the boys did a lot of overdubbing, but it is still a very natural and believable album.
@MorbidManMusic As a Retired Post/mastering engineer for several labels in the 78'-80's I agree with some of your statement but... it's the industry who dictates peoples choice in music when all they have is crap to listen to they will buy it just like anything else. machines can not and never will be able to recreate human feel/human error which equates to feel and gives great music it emotive content most of the time. The Drummer is the core of any band and a drum machine is not a drummer.
@li d Hey dunno but I have worked with programmers who were the best of the best and none of them could recreate or create human feel. Drum machines are incapable of random error in the manor of a human and once you quantize a track it is game over entirely. Yes there are some very well done tracks but you can always tell its a machine. Zero feel and zero un intended shift in time which you will almost always get with a human even with a clock.

Might have been my FAVOURITE band when I was a kid... Still really like TOTO.
I still love them until now, they're one of my favorites. I love a lot of their hits which are already timeless classics. I even had one of their cassette tapes from way back when, during their earlier years. 'Til now, I always play some of their love songs from my downloads, like "Ill Be Over You", "I Won't Hold You Back", "Lea" as well as their rock songs "Africa", "Rossana", and "Hold the Line". For me, they're one of the best from the '80s. Long live Toto and your classics!!! You're such talented artists!!!

I was setting up Jeff's drums 3 times a day at different studios before they formed Toto. I worked for Papa Joe until he retired about 6 years ago. It's really sad that people would still tarnish Jeff by bringing up blow. 3M used that to beat the lawsuit. Jeffs use was limited and mostly pot since we were teenagers.

People rag on Toto....and own Thriller. Most people have zero clue that when you listen to Thriller, you are listening to Michael Jackson sing with Toto backing him. Steve Porcaro wrote “Human Nature”, an amazing tune. Quincy Jones found it on a B side of tape and wanted it on Thriller. Steve Lukather recruited Eddie Van Halen, his pal, to play the guitar solo on “Beat it”....and yes, it’s Lukather laying down the rhythmic guitar grove thru the whole song. A great band with great musicians. Between Lukather, the Porcaro’s and David Paitch, they have played on thousands of albums.
Most people have no clue at all about the depth of this band and that's sad. If they would get past Rosanna, Africa and Hold The Line there is so much more to TOTO beyond their own music. These musicians take a back seat to NO ONE and have contributed so much to so many other great artists' works.
I can't believe you didn't mention David Paich. He wrote so many of their hits. Composed countless scores and worked with other legends while writing hits.
Dave has always been so underrated that at times it really pisses me off! Fortunately he himself seems to be ok, staying always off the limelight.

David is also funny on stage. He brings props just to use them on a single track. For "Stranger in town" on their last tour he actually had a newspaper ready on his piano and when he sung the lyric "on the news today" he picked it up and pointed at it. Clever bit that I still can't forget

I love TOTO and I agree your statement here! I was on a TOO concert this year 2019 in Munich, and it was one of my favorite concert in my life. TOTO is so great, the band has a very hight level on musical quality. I love this music!
I went to school with Mike Porcaro’s son for 13 years. Mike and his family were so open, loving and compassionate. I’ll always be wishing them well.
I watched an interview with their father who was part of the Wrecking Crew back in the day, he was a drummer/percussionist. Sweet, sweet salt of the earth man. I believe what you said.

Toto was nowhere near being the nickelback of the 1980s, Their lineup was absolutely insane. Their lineup consisted of some of the best studio and session musicians in Los Angeles at the time and their musicians played on many hit songs of the day including Steve Pocaro coming up with the instrumental behind Micheal Jackson’s “Human Nature” !!

OsaVida Films Toto's members have played in a couple thousand records. Jeff goes from Pink Floyd to Luís Miguel. They recorded almost all tracks of MJ's Thriller. These guys are the musicians' musicians.

Steve Lukather also mentioned many times that Jeff had a heart defect. He'd had a grandfather and an uncle who died around the age of forty. He complained for years about his arms hurting when he played, which he suspected was carpal tunnel, but in hindsight was due to the fact that his arms weren't getting the proper amount of circulation. He was a heavy smoker, and I suspect that this was a much bigger contributing factor to his death than cocaine.
As someone who knows musicians who played with Jeff... He did ALOT of coke. The coke did him in regardless of any heart condition. Some people can do it all their life and some die. He died.
His grandfather with the heart condition became his grandfather because he had children, and he lived long enough to witness his children's children. This is because the grandfather did not do drugs.
Jeff did. That's why he never became a grandfather.

Anybody who is a musician knows that Toto is one of the greatest group of musicians ever assembled. Any respected musician also knows that Rolling Stone Magazine is better served as emergency toilet paper rather than to read any of it's opinions and drivel.

Toto was a supergroup.
I never really cared that much for Toto’s music but they are/were undeniably great musicians. They were more popular overseas and that gave them longevity. Their live Paris performance in support of Falling in Between is nothing short of amazing. It’s sad to see truly talented artists age and loose their gift but it’s far worse to have had the talent and not used it.

I always have and always will love Toto. They are part of my childhood DNA from the 70’s and 80’s. I always liked Bobby Piccaro’s singing. He had a unique style that I could always recognize; including when he and the band collaborated with Boz Scaggs on “Ms Sun”. The band was known to work with many other bands which is something I truly admired about them. It’s tragic to hear about the infighting, drug abuse and medical tragedies for sure. There are definitely side effects of becoming a successful band. I certainly wish these guys well.

Isolation is a great rock record. Angel Don't Cry, Lion and the title track still knock people's socks off.

1:50 This is a good example of how critics rarely reflect the views and interest of the everyday person. If a critic says something isn’t good, in my experience, it usually is the opposite. Critics don’t equate to “everybody”.
Money, Fame and Popularity always brings out what's truly in a person's soul.
It's not easy to be famous and rich. There's too much pressure and emptiness to fill. And touring feels like when you comeback from your vacations with jet lag, but this lasts for months. It is NOT a piece of cake.

They have been incredibly succesful as studio-musicians through out their career. And even tho TOTO were not that big in USA, they were still really big in Japan and had several hits in Europe.

If you don't get it, do I need to dumb it down for you? Money intensifys a person personally. Money inflates people's egos. Toto isn't the first. Black Sabbath with Ozzie, Van Halen with DLR, Genesis with Peter Gabriel. Even the Beatles broke up because of conflict of interest due to personality inflation. It happens in sports. Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant with the Lakers, Buddy Ryan and Mike Ditka with the Chicago Bears, Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson with the Dallas Cowboys. Pick up a book by Sigmund Freud and you might learn something.
@ I hear what youre trying to say. I just dont think your examples apply on TOTO that much. The members have known each other since high school and have played together for over 40 years (their final tour was last year). And yes they have been unlucky when it comes to leadsingers, but the orignal members have allways stayed together. Through all their up and downs. And when offers came from great artists like for example Bruce springsteen to join his band, nobody betrayed or left the band. They have allways stayed humble even tho they have helped a bunch of artists without even getting credit for it, and they only say how thankful theyre to have worked with so many great artist.

Although Toto wasn’t all that successful in their home country after Toto IV, they did remain populair over here in Europe. Their 1988 album “The seventh one” was very successful here, with multiple hit singles.

Toto catalog of music is extraordinary and it goes way beyond the songs Africa and Rossana. For anyone to call Toto a one hit wonder shows a lack of musical knowledge and ignorance. If I were to make an album I would want to get as many of these guy in Toto as I could get to help me because they have the track record of success in making other artist look good on their albums. Case in point Michael Jackson.

One of the true super groups. Superior individual musicians coming together to form an incredible group with the songs to back it up. Critics never liked them because they couldn’t play like them and most of us take no notice of critics anyway. I always thought Jeff Porcaro and Steve Lukather were very close so to hear they argued a lot is a bit of a shock. Assuming this is accurate.....🤔

As others have mentioned, Toto's musicians have played on thousands of albums as studio musicians.
It’s how they made a living as musicians in the 80’s if they weren’t actively involved in a band..they eventually got tired of making everyone else rich with THEIR talent & music comps & formed Toto, as FRIENDS😊
It's real music. Not fashion music. Most people will never grasp that. Less now than ever.
If you dont recognize the greatness of this band, more than likely you haven't listened to their music.

Saw Toto last year on the 40 Trips Around the Sun tour. They are amazing players and song writers. Favorite song that isn't Africa.....English Eyes.
Excellent band! I saw them about 12 years ago and they had Bobby on vocals. He sounded really good. I always liked Hold the Line - Hydra - Pamela - Without Your Love and much more - Aloha 🤙

Sadly, the band was sued again by a certain member's widow about a year and a half ago and Toto lost the case. And equally sad, is that the fan-funded documentary/movie Porcaro: Band of Brothers will not see the light of day for same said reason. Steve has said the band no longer exists as of 2019 - and they had to disband or risk handing over more future royalties. But yes, get their asses into the HoF yesterday already.

good that we have this video. There are bands who just keep playing on the radio tapes and we don't think about them and no little about them - like ToTo, A-Ha and Duran-Duran.

Steve Lukather recently talked about a Rolling Stone article which ripped on Toto’s (successful) first album, and then when their second album Hydra came out, Rolling Stone said that it didn’t have the potential of the first album.
Don’t trust Rolling Stone. There’s a lot of important artists who they’ve always had it out for.
First, Paitch was right. Every album Grand Funk made went platinum but the critics hated them. Second, when you're as talented as these guys are, you're going to bump heads. Before the band was formed most members were successful studio musicians.
I was a senior in high school when Toto released their IV album. While the two better known songs by them rocked the charts, they were still considered insignificant by the critics. I always thought this was unfair because they were comparing apples to oranges.
Toto was going up against some commercial powerhouses: Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Rush, and a handful of other newer bands were the sweethearts of FM radio DJs. Aside from Rush, I thought the others were overrated cookie cutter rock bands. Comparing them to Toto was really unfair. They weren't similar styles of rock.
I didn't realize they had gone through so much tragedy. It's a shame. I would have loved to see them succeed

TOTO rocks! If you don't love this band something is wrong with you.
All of the musicians of Toto are extremely versatile and creative, which, I think commentators from Rolling Stone Magazine simply don't understand. They can play any style, from hard driving rock, to samba, to swing to a slow ballad, not to mention that they have produced orchestrated movie music. In addition, like the group Chicago, they play to their member's strengths, with a combination of different lead singers for the song that best showcases the singer's voice. Michael Jackson would not have chosen the members of Toto to play on his "Thriller" album if they were not amazing musicians. A professional musician should be about creating amazing music - music that showcases their technical skills as instrumentals/vocalists, as well as their compositional skills - again, two facets that I believe most rock magazines simply don't appreciate or refuse to appreciate. I play the piano professionally; however, my keyboard skills don't match up to that of Greg Philiganges, a former member of Toto. That, to me is a true professional - someone who can do technically what the other 99% of the musicians cannot. Unfortunately, such is not the case with most "professional" rock musicians.
They produced and appeared on Chicago’s comeback album in 1982, the same year that Jimmy Pankow (Chicago’s trombonist) appeared on their Grammy-winning Toto IV. Chicago and Toto have always worked with each other.
