  • Join us for an episode of StarTalk All-Stars recorded at our panel at the Star Trek Mission: New York 50th Anniversary convention. To get the science of Star Trek right, our show’s in the capable hands of two serious Trekkies: All-Stars host and astrophysicist Charles Liu and co-host Chuck Nice. But that’s not enough, so our panel also featured Andrew Fazekas, astronomy journalist and author of Star Trek: The Official Guide to Our Universe: The True Science behind the Starship Voyages. Plus, in her second StarTalk appearance, our newest All-Stars host, Columbia University astrophysicist Summer Ash.

    I was wondering about what My Mom mentioned, Can the constant launching of rockets & space shuttles affect the rotation of earth? In My opinion, The launches of any craft would be like if a tiny bottle rocket wouldn't be able to change the rotation of the mass of a planets orbit or the position of the planet orientation over a short passage of time.

    The "Galactic Barrier" was an artifact of our thinking at the time Roddenberry wrote Star Trek that the Milky Way was the only galaxy in the Universe, so effectively it was also the edge of the Universe. Since, we have figured out that the "Messier Objects" thought to be nebulae in our galaxy are actually other galaxies outside the Milky Way. That was just a function of larger and better-focusing telescopes, especially Hubble which is outside our atmosphere and hence doesn't need to [imperfectly] correct for atmospheric perturbations. The current "explanation" (really just a retcon) is that it's an energy field set up by some heretofore unseen intergalactic aliens (rather than infragalactic like the Vulcans, Kilingons, Dominion, Borg, etc.).

  • @laxrulz7
    @laxrulz7 6 лет назад +1

    Regarding the Alcubierre Drive: Because you would be traversing all of the space in between the two points, you'd also accumulate a pocket of radiation that you'd basically "release" in a burst with your ship. Even if you could protect yourself from the radiation, you'd basically "nuke" anything in front of you with a massive burst of energy. So the drive itself may be the most powerful, planet scouring weapon ever created. Whoops.
    Regarding Artificial Gravity: Because gravity diminishes with the square of distance, the problem posed by "Gravitational plating" is that you create MASSIVE gravitational tidal affects from head to foot. There's not even a theoretical way to avoid that problem.

    "can you imagine the visual of travelling faster than light" I heard that because your basically crashing into the light in front of you and your eyes absorb the light coming from all directions. So you would get temporary cataracts while at warp and looking in the direction you're traveling. So... Sorry Chuck, but it would suck.

    • @barahng
      @barahng 6 лет назад

      They mention that this is recorded at the 50th Anniversary Star Trek convention in New York, which means it was recorded in September 2016. Since Star Trek Beyond released at the end of July 2016, she maybe simply hadn't had time in that month and a half to go to the cinema to watch Star Trek Beyond.
      Jupiter Ascending had at that point been out for a year and a half so plenty of time to watch it in cinema or streaming services.

    9:32 I had a friend who literally said “I think I saw the Milky Way when I was star last night!”
    I was so dumbfounded and asked her, “How can you see a galaxy that you are inside of..? That’s like saying you can see the outside of your house from the inside of it. You probably saw another galaxy like andromeda.”
    Then she said “What’s andromeda?” Smh. Of course I had to show her the andrommmmeda skit lol.
    I felt bad for how she might have felt but I’m just kind of astonished this is a “fun fact” people don’t know.. or realize just logically.

      If you search "view of milky way from Earth" you will see what your friend might have been referring to. Because of our position relative to the center, you can actually see our galaxy as a band of stars and nebula even though we are inside the the galaxy.
      However if you're friend saw a full galaxy with about the angular size of a star then it definitely wasn't our own.

    • @Paretozen
      @Paretozen 6 лет назад +5

      Being smart is a tricky thing.
      On the one hand you will not notice that you are smart. If you are good at something, it is likely that you will think it is easy while others might struggle with it.
      On the other hand if you are smart you are aware of that which you do not know, which is a lot and will always be a lot. A human life is too short to become smart at everything.
      So in other words You are bound to misjudge how smart you are. Now you have other people judging how smart you are, they are even more prone to be wrong. For instance they might not know what they do not know, or think something is hard which is trivial for you.
      All my life I've been exposed to "you are so smart" comments and to be honest, they were all false statements. Don't try to play the game of wanting to be smart or thinking you are. There is no benefit in it, if anything it makes you less smart.

    • @MichaelBerthelsen
      @MichaelBerthelsen 6 лет назад +5

      Crumbs Do you mean smart, or intelligent. Intelligent is a specific thing, while smart can be interpreted in different ways. But smart generally involves different ways of solving problems or figuring things out, and has nothing to do with regurgitating facts on a test. I have an IQ well above average, but got an average C- on my bachelor's degree, while I currently have an A average on my Masters, since that's much more application than regurgitation. Your grades shouldn't bother you too much (unless you're looking at a particularly prestigious school). They're not necessarily an indicator of smarts/intelligence.

    The only problem with stand ups in space is that there is no up or down... so how would you know you are watching a stand up???

    ST: Discovery is not garbage, but The Orville IS the new Star Trek.

      A very sad new Star Trek...

      I don't remember any previous Star Trek having puerile attempts at humor every three sentences. I barely made it through the first episode of The Orville, it was downright painful to watch.
      If that humor is your kind of thing, it's probably worth a watch. But for those who don't find toilet humor even remotely funny, it's bloody awful.

    The humming while Summer Ash was talking about space stations was really bad form. I thought Charles was an entertaining host, but he really needs to learn to yield the floor and not interrupt. Not cool there. Having said that, he was so very encouraging to the questioners and I think that was awesome!

    "remove the excess baryons" is just science-speak for "take out the trash"

      I can imagine people dislike this right at the moment where the moderator keeps humming over the guest trying to explain something.
