If someone is saying something that isn't true and they are not qualified to say it then they should be interrupted when they are on TV. Philosopher Francis Bacon proved communication about the universe is complicated and limited by human vocabulary so we need intellectual standards to reduce inevitable accidental miscommunication. Conservative media has proved that humans can lack integrity and take advantage of this inevitable accidental miscommunication so we need journalist skilled in epistemology and educated in a wide range of subjects to call out dishonest or wrong individuals when they are on TV.

I’ve noticed a lot of conservative tv hosts are constantly shouting, or talking over people giving legit information. So it goes both ways. In the end stupid people should be allowed to talk so smart people can correct them. But just talking over each other doesn’t accomplish anything

Personally, I was never a believer, but I listened and well grasped what a bible tries to teach, visiting church every sunday for 20 years of my lifetime. In my opinion, it is a literal manual of how to be a well behaved person. My conclusion about faith is clear. It can be a curse but also a blessing. People believe in something that cannot be proved but it's exactly what pushes them forward in life. Getting up every morning, going to work, fighting with daily struggles like pain, misfortune, etc. but knowing that someone out there is keeping an eye on us and one day everyone would be rewarded for their effort.
If faith in god can save lives and keep people from becoming mentally unstable to a point of self harm, I'm not against the idea at all. Only those who try to change my mind.
And there are those who develop religious trauma of hell if theyre a bad person
Religion is not all good
We are responsible for this chaos on Earth not God we have to fight and change it, Adam and Eve were living happy lives but they disobey God,they were living without doing any works and God gave us a beautiful heaven but then Adam and Eve break God law and now on Earth we shouldn't imagine for life that we get on heaven we have to face this problems and fix and work for this world so that's the solution 😊

Rather, different strains of Human (call them "races" if that's convenient) have taken different adaptations. The amount of melanin in the skin and hair as a prime example. Could you say that the amount of melanin positions one Human strain as "more evolved"? I don't think so. Differently evolved, perhaps, but not "more" evolved. People are constantly evolving with every generation.

He is looking at the whole universe as a man who does not even take up 0.000001% of the universe, so how could he know until someone explains it to him. God is all good and what he is saying is in essence is, "how could a good god let bad things happen?" We need to remember that the "natural causes" that cause pain and suffering are not natural at all. Remember, God made everything perfect except for us, we are the ones who caused there to be a curse on this earth it was us who brought sin into an otherwise sinless world. Pain and suffering are caused by both the curse on this planet and the sin of man. Which brings me back to the question, "How could a good god let bad things happen?" The answer is both simple and complex, the simple part is that God is good but he is also just. The curse is an effect of sin you could say a judgment of sorts, a good judge would not want to see people in pain, but a just judge would want to see justice being served. This is why God allows this suffering. We see things from a limited perspective, kind of like a baby who does not understand why they cannot play with a knife. We are like babies who do not know much and God is the one who made everything and who knows more than we do. Also, sometimes suffering is necessary because some metals cannot get stronger until it goes through fire and a sword cannot be made unless the metal is beaten with a hammer.

I had a Mexican girlfriend once who had a very interesting thought about this. Yes, she did believed in God, but she said, that 'hell' is something we are already IN. Here on Earth. All the miseries that Neill describes are all elements of 'hell'. Once we die we served our time in 'hell' and everybody moves on to heaven. So that was her point of view. I found it interesting, and even more logical than the opposite thought about Earth being paradise and that based on our actions it will be determined that you go either to heaven or hell. There are two things not quite right about that thought: First: young children or even unborn babies, who die prematurely. Did they had the change to do something good? Not really. Second: If Earth is a paradise (which it is not really), then the penalty being in torment forever in hell does not even come close to what God actually represents. How could He inflict that on any human, who lives 70 maybe 80 years on this planet and then by their actions be punished for an eternity? That's not likely. Hence I found the Mexican girl her thought pretty interesting.
That makes god seem like an even more like a giant evil asshole. So, from birth, I am forced to live in a prison of suffering so I can get into heaven when I die and hang out with the abusive entity that tortured me for the first part of my eternity. No thank you, I wouldn't even want to be near something like that. Yuck

The earth is not paradise nor is it hell, it's just a place where we live. You can think of Earth as a kind of rehabilitation center, we are all sinners by birth. In Earth we can decide to either do good or do bad, in which those decisions will decide where we end up after life

But he didn't actually teach you anything. All he did was a juvenile analysis of the idea that God is either not all good or not all powerful, which is a seductive but incorrect idea.
God is both all powerful and all good, and this is WHY he chooses to allow evil to exist. If he didn't, then the soul and free will could not exist. Also, without the ability for destruction, you also cannot have creation. The very laws of the universe that allow natural disasters to exist are the same ones that allow for life to exist and come about.
The laws that allow suffering to exist are the same ones that allow strength and courage and virtue to exist and emerge as well.
A world with the possibility for destruction or suffering or malevolence is BETTER than one without it. A world without these things is an empty void without planets or stars, without oceans or weather, without plants or animals, without free will or people or societies or art and love and passion and fear and courage and suffering and endurance and weakness and strength, without evil AND without good.
What was God supposed to do? Not create anything? No, he took a chance, he had faith in us. He decided something was better than nothing, created it, and then gave us reason, empathy, the ability to feel meaning and purpose and have courage and become better and stronger and transcend our suffering, and even gave us a huge book of instructions on how to do all those things (the Bible). God is amazing and he gave us an amazing gift despite, and partially even BY giving us suffering as well.

I kinda disagree. Before scientific evidence of being clean, we have scripture that teach of how to be clean and staff off infectious diseases. In some cases, scripture came before science.
@@djbrowm1562 Science greatly overshadows whatever ideas and practices existed before, especially those described in religious scripture, and they're overshadowed both in amount and efficiency. Just look where we are now compared to medieval times. While some religious scriptures happen to mention basic scientific practices, they come absolutely nowhere close to today's science.
@@trashtuber6021 You talk about science like it's the best thing to ever happen to the human race. Science has achieved some great things, but it's also contributed to a lot of horrible things (including our ability to destroy all life on the planet).
The thing is, science and religion should not be trying to compete to see who's better. They both bring valuable information to the furtherance of the human condition.
Religion has been around for 5,500 years. Science has been around for about 400 years. There are topics that religion cover that science will not, because science is the study of the natural (observable) world. You would be ignorant to only look upon science as the end-all-be-all and completely ignore the 99% of the world that is unobservable.
This is why both religion and science should be promoted and studied.
He's articulating what's called 'the argument from evil'. It's not new, but it's very compelling. If God is all loving, why does He allow such suffering? If He does, why should we worship him?

@Rickey H. Planets are formed when a star explodes and the remnants of that star start forming into an object by gravity. There really isn't much dictating where a planet can form other than it must be inside the star's gravitational pull. Imo because exo planets exist, it doesn't prove god exists.
There are also theories which state that when the universe experiences a heat death, it results in another big bang. An endless loop if you'd like. I'd have to do more research on the matter, but I did like how you involved math in your arguement.

I saw a car wrecked on the side of the road. It was a Ford. There was much destruction, it was on fire, seeming chaos, and the people within lay dead. Some fanatic came up, claiming the vehicle was built by Ford Motor Company. I highly doubt that. The vehicle came about by random chance and endless combinations of metallic parts. I mean, if there really is a Ford Motor Company, one would expect them to build cars that work and are not smashed or on fire! I just don't see any evidence for such a benevolent Company. This crazy fanatic next to me *claimed* that the Company built the care just right, but that later the owner misused it, which led to the destruction. I then asked, "Then why doesn't the Company just force all drivers to do exactly what the Company wants?" He then said I would be complaining about the Company being tyrannical, if it did that. What an idiot! I think every scientific, free thinking, rational mind knows there is no such Company as Ford Motor Company. I am totally willing to accept it, if there is such a Company, but I do not see ANY evidence for it. What? The Ford logo? Well, again, that is just chance. Randomness that uneducated people see as creation and order and design? What? Ford logos on the leather and interior and under the hood? Again, wonderful accident. The beauty of randomness.

As a Christian, I love his answer and have the upmost respect for him. He doesn't believe in God. But does not rule out that God might be proven correct one day. In science, everything is a possibility until it is proven not to be. So, thanks, Neil.
The universe is almost an endless room, with that in mind it's much more difficult to prove that god doesn't exist than the other way around. Same thing with aliens, planets etc.

Religion is about giving people comfort, not truth, and most people want that comfort more than they want the truth. Afterlife? Nobody knows there is one. God? Nobody could not proove to it exist. Religion is deeply there in every culture, but people do not really question why. Maybe that is the problem.

The model changes, as we get more information, so it can give more and more accurate results.
But when you neglect and ignore everything what science shows us, because you cant accept it, and you rather believe in god, which has zero explanation, i say you are not really making sense.

Our beliefs , the rational ones that are with evidence and the little superstitious ones without evidence, are relevant to both ourselves and everyone around us, for we every moving second push them towards others knowingly or unknowingly. You will see what I mean if you are in India more obviously. There is superstitions in every step of the way you turn to, got bombarded with visuals of rituals of how to respond if a person sneezes or a cat crosses your path or you see a person from a certain caste comes by. No country is spared of these kinds of beliefs. What I came to see in my faith is that a person is blessed by the presence of God when the very idea of God himself wipes off all the other millions and millions of beliefs in that person's system. And the faith make a person ever more sensible in his way of life and the way he responds to his fellow beings. As for talking about real world, I am of the opinion that we are far less equipped than a baby to sense and see the so called real world. There is an entirely different world when we come to a state when rationality no longer helps and extreme struggles, like disasters in both personal life and on a social scale, makes some people see through the membrane we are all covered in since from our birth.

That's fair, but it's different when you're say, a a gay child in a fundamentalist family. Then- you have other issues. A conflict brought about by that choice. Evidence then becomes all the more important, because under the laws of this and many religions, that child has to throw away their chances at marriage, intimacy, etc. All for something they're being asked to believe in without evidence, and often given shame by their upbringing just for the way they were born.
Suddenly, evidence means a great deal. Especially to someone in that situation. If you're being asked to take that abuse and give up the chance to potentially be so much happier, many people will understandably ask *why* should I? And if the reason is "none, just faith", then that's extremely difficult for people in such situations to get behind. That's not even the only example, just one.

And if God also values human free will because he made humans as rational beings, capable of making their own decisions then you cannot stop us from doing evil or else he would not be all good in keeping his promise to allow humans to chose him or not; because there is not such thing as forced love it is like saying God should make a square circle or a dark light things that in their very nature are contradict and cannot exist. And because God made humans with free will and allowed them to be tempted by the snake in the garden of Eden that makes the human choice to love God genuine and significant.

I appreciate his distinction between divine attributes and the existence of "God." and I think that that's really important. Everyone who thinks critically about the question believes that there exists some primal cause or principal of all that exists, some first cause, some first mover. That's not the question. The question is what else can be said about that first cause or mover. Is this principal the universe itself? Is it contained within the universe? Does it possess agency? Is it good? These are the questions that need to be asked.
All I know is, if it is, whatever it is, it's doing a darn good job of hiding from us, therefore must be enjoying all the controversy about it's existence.

My skepticism of the first cause/prime mover is that Aristotle didn't know about Newton's 3 laws of motion. He believed that the force had to be constantly applied for the body to stay in motion.

You’re also right that, while we stand on his shoulders in many ways, Aristotle’s physics were crude and have been superseded by Classical Mechanics for good reason. Nevertheless, I think he has some important insights for us.
While it’s a common misunderstanding, Aristotle’s argument from motion doesn’t concern the phenomenon which Newton is concerned with which we call “motion.” In Aristotle’s vocabulary, “motion” refers to “the reduction of something from potentiality to actuality with respect to its form.” Frankly, I don’t know if his metaphysics accurately describes our world, but I’m not sure that it matters here because the arguments from motion and efficient causality are, in many ways, different flavors of a single argument which tries to demonstrate that an infinite regression of caused causes cannot possibly explain an effect in a way which doesn't rely on his peculiar grammar. It’s also worth noting that Aristotle was concerned not only with what he called “efficient causes” (for example, the efficient cause of the ball going into the net is the player kicking the ball). In fact, anything which could be preceded by the word “because” is a cause. So if we consider a body which has always been in motion with respect to some reference frame, it’s motion isn’t “uncaused” even though it doesn’t need to be pushed to move; it’s motion is in some sense “caused” by it’s nature. “Why does the body move?” “Be*cause* it is the nature of a body in motion to stay in motion”. With this in mind, the argument could be generalized, without that flavor, as follows:
1. Every effect has some cause.
2. A cause can either be caused or uncaused.
3. In the final analysis, a caused cause is a mediator of an effect, not a cause. The metal rod, for instance, mediates the heat of the fire and burns my hand.
4. A mediator will never mediate an effect without a cause. It’s ability to cause an effect on its own can be quantified as 0.
5. A series of mediators will never mediate an effect without a cause. If we take the quantities of their potency to cause and add it up, 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 0.
6. There is no reason to believe that (5) becomes untrue if the series is infinite. 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + … converges to 0.
7. Therefore, if there is some effect it is not possible any mediator or collection of mediators could produce an effect without a cause.
8. In an infinite regression of causes, because every cause is the effect of some anterior cause, every cause is a caused cause and thus a mediator, and according to (7) it cannot produce an effect on its own.
9. If there is an effect, it is either uncaused, caused by an uncaused cause (and perhaps mediated by a finite regression of caused causes), or caused by an infinite regression of causes, but we know from (1) and (8) that the first and third possibilities are impossible,
10. Therefore, if there is an effect we must admit that there is some uncaused cause which is ultimately behind it.
Now, any phenomenon with an explanation is, by definition, an effect of some cause. If the argument above is true it tells us that if we keep digging, and keep asking "why" we eventually get to some foundational reality. The question isn't "is it there?" but "what else can be said of it".
edit: I don't think that this argument implies that we'd eventually exhaust all questions (in which case it would contradict Gödel's theorem), only that we would eventually hit an answer(s) which is terminal and fundamental.

I see where you're going... I'm not too big on philosophy. I am a lab rat who is convinced that if philosophy goes away, it will be bad for the world. But if science goes away it would be worse.
Having said that, as far as I'm aware, the consensus regarding this logically necessary "first cause" is that it is some kind of agency/intent... if theology has any say... But it doesn't necessarily have to be, does it. Whether it is or not seems trivial to me. How does knowing that help us anyways. To use your {touch hot metal rod, cause premise} our fingers can be burnt ( intentionally) by an agent or you can accidentally touch the hot metal rod. Either way, the effect is the same.
Like I said in my initial response, (albeit sarcastically) Why would something as powerful as a "good" First Cause (being an agent) choose to be hidden and so controversial. Of course it could be an evil intent, prime mover that allows some good. Intent on keeping us confused. Unless more (demonstrable/falsifiable) evidence emerges, I'm inclined (ad populum belief notwithstanding) to (based on reason) think we accidentally came in contact with the hot metal.

Rin Nguyen I have one. Science is a process-or way of thought-involving observing evidence to support some hypothesis or theory. Nothing is “proven” under science. There simply has to be recorded, observable results that can be recreated. Pseudoscience is actually the opposite of science. It ignores all of that by creating a theory based on nothing, then observing no supportable evidence. It claims to be true because technically there is no evidence against it (usually because the scenario is so ridiculous that it doesn’t relate to the universe in any practical way). This is what religion does. Someone creates a concept such as god and spins it to the point that no real world concept can relate to it, and demands you just accept it as truth. That’s pseudoscience; therefore, religion kind of is the opposite of science.
Matt House, call it pseudoscience then. However, you seem to have a very generic, misguided idea of religion. You're characterizing them all as being based on nothing because you can't physically measure supporting evidence, as well as demanding that they be accepted as true. You are right that there might not be physical evidence that God exists, but that does not mean Christianity, or other religions, are based on nothing (its called faith). If you were to join a church , you can witness physical evidence that people's lives are being changed as they develop relationships with God. If you were to believe in God, or reach out to God, you might experience communication with God that is undeniably real, even though you couldn't physically prove it. Its always going to be up to oneself to decide what to believe, nobody is forcing you to accept God is true. Christians are evangelical because after witnessing the power of God, it would be selfish to let others die without atleast having the oppurtunity to choose.
