He lends respect to religious people who want to know the objective natural truth to our reality (scientor). It's difficult in this age to have a serious interest in science as well as religion. I'm glad there are scientists like Brian Cox in this world. The man has wisdom.
god being a scientist is a possibility. infinite universes with miniscule differences between each. Sounds like a science experiment, all but 1 thing is a constant and 1 variable changed in each. "What happens when I let this play out. Can I create more of myself (say all matter in the universe collapses and becomes energy again)?" Things I figure a lone, extremely powerful being might ask/try to figure out.
@Fire Stryker Well, if God is not His creation as a whole, if God is not a part of His creation, and if God's creation is infinite, then He can't exist, as nothing can exist outside of infinity, because this would mean that the infinity is bounded by this external higher being, while the definition of infinity is unboundedness. This only leaves atheism and pantheism, the latter being the idea that God equals the Universe.
@@ergot1803 infinity is not only one. Example : Just like number you can keep count it, if you have infinite time, so you need infinite time to measure the infinite number.

It might have come from something its just beyond our knowledge and the fact. The fact that the universe works so well from a big bang and the way it is the way it is suggests it possibly happens often, happens more than once. i imagine our universe could be like a spark from a fire floating away. most sparks fade out immediately. some last a while but die but occasionally one lasts a very long time floating away. @Matthew Philip A genius has an IQ of 160. I'd bet a dollar that Brian Cox has that. As a Believer, this was very well stated. It is arrogant to have answers for questions with uncertain evidence. I really do appreciate his respect for religion, because far too often do we see discourse in the scientific community over this immense question of origin.
I agree. I am a believer in both Science and religion. I truly think there really IS room for both. When you think about our understanding of space time, we tend to recognize time as a straight line, a beginning and an end, the alpha and the omega, but more and more evidence is leading the opposite direction in that there is no beginning or end, which is mind boggling in and of itself. In effect INIFINITY. That concept of time is staggering.
Religions are just ancient people giving answer to the same question we ask ourselves today, stupid answers but still It had the meaning of give something that people could hang on. Whilst I agree that there is room for both science and religion, I find it very hard to accept any religion which has found its way to us in the form of a book. @@Legit14525 I personally feel like its the relationship that makes it important. A connection to God, is as a connection to one's self, and/or a connection to nature, or other beings. It can be indescribable, but known, nonetheless. I feel the same for anything psycho-active or hallucinogenic. Your senses are being inhibited sometimes (blocked) or they can be magnified/intensified as well. Your brain will make up what it doesn't receive sometimes to make sense of what it does receive as it's always trying to figure things out. Sometimes you intensely feel yourself or the feelings of others. That same connection could be illusion, or it could be divine. The connection is there regardless, so as long as you learn from it, and don't jump to conclusions, I think it's as good as it gets. Who's to say otherwise, right?

Iconoclasticnation I’m not sure why “you can believe what you want, as long as you don’t disagree with me” sounds humble lmao. The ironic part is that observational science is only meaningful if your philosophy allows for it (so first of all, science is dependent upon philosophy), and furthermore, it can’t actually prove anything definitively. So everything he’s claiming to “know” really are just theories (yes, I know theories aren’t just guesses), especially when it comes to astronomy. we may see that the further away we look we see less carbon, and we see that nuclear fission produces carbon, but that doesn’t actually prove that the nuclear fission produced the carbon that we see. It is a reasonable theory, but it’s not something you can actually know to be the cause.
mattmessuh We’re talking in general terms here, not specifics. I don’t entirely disagree with what you’ve written, but I like that Brian makes plenty of concessions in acknowledging what science doesn’t yet know, and to me that’s humility. If there is a creator, it could be outside of the bounds of human comprehension all together if it is powerful enough to create all that we know and don't know (infinite multiverse?!). I love the way that this man thinks. While I'm not a believer myself, the answer to Brian's question was already given by Thomas Aquinas in his corpus of work. He believed that there's no way in which philosophy could rule out the possibility of an infinite past, and none of the arguments that he provided for the existence of God were based on such premise.
@@globalcoupledances I wouldn't be able to tell in which volume it is, but it is somewhere in the Summa. God can exist scientifically. It's pretty obvious how.. The first way is that God is reality itself and he reacts to us and is in all of us. The 2nd way is that we are in a simulation and that whoever running the simulation is "God". The 3rd way is to assume that one day humans will create life (logical) and become "gods" to that lifeform. Most Islamic scholars say that one verse of the Quran (9:5) abrogates 124 verses, which are basically all the verses that talk about peace and forgiveness. This is the verse that says: “But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular Prayers and practise regular Charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful” 9:5 "فَإِذَا انسَلَخَ الأَشْهُرُ الْحُرُمُ فَاقْتُلُواْ الْمُشْرِكِينَ حَيْثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمْ وَخُذُوهُمْ وَاحْصُرُوهُمْ وَاقْعُدُواْ لَهُمْ كُلَّ مَرْصَدٍ فَإِن تَابُواْ وَأَقَامُواْ الصَّلاَةَ وَآتَوُاْ الزَّكَاةَ فَخَلُّواْ سَبِيلَهُمْ إِنَّ اللّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ" التوبة 5:9 I think you Muslims are so naive. You are in trouble when you ask for the context of the verse. It shows that not all Quranic verses are relevant today and they belong only to the 7th century. Quran is becoming outdated because Muslims can not follow them all. Yet you guys without even reading anything blindly follow your religion.

The problems arise from both religion and science when arrogance rears it’s ugly head. When doctrine and theory become dogma for the purpose of control, impeding discourse and free thought, then ignorance becomes the desired result.
"Thou shalt not question the role of science is not to eliminate God! As alternative cosmos multiply science stand accused of theocide. Consume. Conform."

AK , very well said. As a Christian I think there is a possibility that elements of the bible is not literal. I listen to John Lennox and he gives that example and I think it’s very plausible. Science has made fantastic discoveries and has help with the progress of the human race. How Brian Cox also states that those who believe in science should not and can not say that science has answered everything and cannot say that there is no God. This is exactly how we should have these discussions.
I love this guy because he vocalizes the truth about science. It's all a game of probabilities. As in; we are 99.9% sure about how gravity works, but we may discover some new physics that change that. Science is never SETTLED, it's constantly evolving with new knowledge. An idiot knows everything, but the wise man knows nothing.
There are certain things that are referred to as “laws”, which means the expected result has yet to be disproven, but I just think that means it hasn’t been disproven “yet”….
@Michael LaCreta I don't think so, he just did what a good scientist does. Based on all current knowledge the universe is 13.8 billion years old, in the future they may discover some new science that shatters that, as in the universe has no age, no begining and no end. Or some other new physics figures out we are actually in a simulation and have only existed for a few hours on some kids console in the year 4022 as part of a series of super popular games. My point is, based on current science it's 13.8bln years old. And for us right now that's the best we are going to get.
@Michael LaCreta but brian cox doesnt mean any harm. He does say that, there are things you need to take into account with your belief. The things that we know and tested Although he did ask" where does god fit in all of this" but this might just be a genuine question. Where exactly is the line in your faith For the longest time i have wondered that. Im not a believer nor grew up as one. I always thought religious people was some special kind of stupid. But as a young adult i have develop a genuine respect for it. The structure, wisdom and comfort that religion brings in one's life is not to be overlooked
As a believer in God, I really love science and all things that come with. The UNIVERSE is structured in a intelligent way with all of its laws that all living things abide by. As a believer I think God is the science we see and study because he gave us all of it made that natural law. But that’s just me and my opinion on things.
@@CaptPike787 To tell someone that they are wrong on a belief you cannot disprove as there is no means of doing so, is the beginning of arrogance. If you cannot prove with reasonable certainty your belief, then you have no inclination to believe in your own beliefs, but you do anyways.
Rob Figaro I think you are projecting due to your human need for connection, you look at the universe and it looks back similar to a mirrored reflection of yourself. We are one with our environment. (Planet earth, space) “...greater than I and loves his creation unconditionally.” That would be you projecting. “He” is you. That unconditional love comes from your own heart and it is reflected right back to you, in a sense. Although, I could be wrong, maybe there is an actual being out there that thinks similarly to a human that watches over us as God. If the universe is infinite then this character must exist. However given the infinity, there would also be infinite versions of this character we call God, there’s not just one greater being, there’s no one God unless EVERYTHING (infinity) is collectively considered as one. Which would then in turn mean that we too, are god, a small part of it atleast.
I think you're right. That's the core question in Zen meditation as well: What am I? Don't know". It opens up for wondering about everything and releases all these fixed ideas based on lose assumptions and wobbly thinking.
I don’t know. You can’t know because it doesn’t make sense to know such a philosophical thing. However, I feel as though he probably exists, thus I’ll live my life as if he does. That is my definition of belief.
What's really interesting is that Christianity does indeed operate within that framework as you said. There are still some people who make up their own rules about Christianity and claim this to be right and this to be incorrect/wrong, but really the more deeper you explore these scientific laws and ideas, the more my belief of God *does* indeed exists grows and grows like a plant watered by scientific logic.
Each and every time i start to think about the infinity of the universe or that there was nothing before I get absolutely scared shitless. That feeling in my stomach. Pure dread.
Why dread? For me it's just a feeling of how long before the big bang were we waiting to get started? Was there time, did time exist? How did it all fit into a tiny point. How big was it just before the bang?
rent a shill I guess. But the idea of God from what I see is a divine creator, or omnipotent being. If he was a high dimensional being I doubt he’d be a tangible physical presence we could interpret. So kind of an alien but more than that I guess.
Alessandro B10 Not necessarily. It would explain his influence in the world operating from a higher dimension. Religious texts would still hold up as God never appears as a physical being.
The next highest dimension from our own is the fifth. In the fifth dimension, time is accesible at any moment, past present, or future. This would eliminate the concept of decision making (free will), as all decisions are already “made”
Brian Cox is an outstanding communicator. In order to be such, you need to listen as well as covey thoughts. I thought his comment about the universe potentially being eternal was in line with my belief that God is eternal. I am devout Christian, and I place the Heavenly Father first in my life and read scripture and pray daily. Like many others I walk by faith, not by sight and that faith is unwavering. I do not dismiss new revelations in science, and am amazed at the advancements made during my lifetime. As a Christian that accepts Jesus as my savior, I feel uplifted and blessed. I am thankful and grateful for each new day of life, and the blessings the Lord has bestowed upon me.

I think Brian's thoughtful question to the bishops could have been easily answered if they were better versed in philosophy. It seems to me a possibility that a Creator that exists outside of space time could create a universe which appears infinitely old when measured and observed from within. As a simple illustration, I'm a 3d animator, and when I open my 3d software and create a new empty scene, it contains a timeline (on which keyframes are placed, which is what creates animation!), and that timeline is numbered starting at time zero, and stretches infinitely forward and backward in time. A hypothetical being living on that timeline would perceive an infinite past, even though I created the scene.
The cross of Christ will be the science and the song of the redeemed through all eternity. In Christ glorified they will behold Christ crucified. Never will it be forgotten that He whose power created and upheld the unnumbered worlds through the vast realms of space, the Beloved of God, the Majesty of Heaven, He whom cherub and shining seraph delighted to adore,-humbled himself to uplift fallen man; that he bore the guilt and shame of sin, and the hiding of his Father’s face, till the woes of a lost world broke his heart, and crushed out his life on Calvary’s cross. That the Maker of all worlds, the Arbiter of all destinies, should lay aside his glory, and humiliate himself from love to man, will ever excite the wonder and adoration of the universe. As the nations of the saved look upon their Redeemer, and behold the eternal glory of the Father shining in his countenance; as they behold his throne, which is from everlasting to everlasting, and know that his kingdom is to have no end, they break forth in rapturous song, “Worthy, worthy is the Lamb that was slain, and hath redeemed us to God by his own most precious blood!” GC88 651.2 There, immortal minds will contemplate with never-failing delight the wonders of creative power, the mysteries of redeeming love. There will be no cruel, deceiving foe to tempt to forgetfulness of God. Every faculty will be developed, every capacity increased. The acquirement of knowledge will not weary the mind or exhaust the energies. There the grandest enterprises may be carried forward, the loftiest aspirations reached, the highest ambitions realized; and still there will arise new heights to surmount, new wonders to admire, new truths to comprehend, fresh objects to call forth the powers of mind and soul and body. GC 677.2 All the treasures of the universe will be open to the study of God’s redeemed. Unfettered by mortality, they wing their tireless flight to worlds afar-worlds that thrilled with sorrow at the spectacle of human woe and rang with songs of gladness at the tidings of a ransomed soul. With unutterable delight the children of earth enter into the joy and the wisdom of unfallen beings. They share the treasures of knowledge and understanding gained through ages upon ages in contemplation of God’s handiwork. With undimmed vision they gaze upon the glory of creation-suns and stars and systems, all in their appointed order circling the throne of Deity. Upon all things, from the least to the greatest, the Creator’s name is written, and in all are the riches of His power displayed. GC 677.3 And the years of eternity, as they roll, will bring richer and still more glorious revelations of God and of Christ. As knowledge is progressive, so will love, reverence, and happiness increase. The more men learn of God, the greater will be their admiration of His character. As Jesus opens before them the riches of redemption and the amazing achievements in the great controversy with Satan, the hearts of the ransomed thrill with more fervent devotion, and with more rapturous joy they sweep the harps of gold; and ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands of voices unite to swell the mighty chorus of praise. GC 678.1 “And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.” Revelation 5:13. GC 678.2 The great controversy is ended. Sin and sinners are no more. The entire universe is clean. One pulse of harmony and gladness beats through the vast creation. From Him who created all, flow life and light and gladness, throughout the realms of illimitable space. From the minutest atom to the greatest world, all things, animate and inanimate, in their unshadowed beauty and perfect joy, declare that God is love. @@deetee-uk Of course there's no way to answer those questions from inside our created realm since we can't observe or measure anything beyond it. It seems to me that such a creator would either be created himself as you implied, and as such live in a realm that was also created for it by a greater being, or if our creator is indeed God, then it would by definition be self-existent with no creator and no created realm. Since there's no way to evaluate the probability that our creator has a creator, then Occam's razor would lead me to assume that our creator is the source of everything.

@John Z Depends how you look at the situation. Sometimes the result is correct but the reason for it is wrong.
It might have come from something its just beyond our knowledge and the fact. The problem with religion is that it has its roots in ignorance
Imagine beign born during the medieval period, not knowing anything about modern science, seems easy to just say everything is how It is because of a big dude in the sky. It was a simple answer to make things better, to give existence a meaning. But that opium that is religion is An hell of a drug and people today, with all the science etc still hang on those stuff because: is a simple answer to complex questions.
Whilst I agree that there is room for both science and religion, I find it very hard to accept any religion which has found its way to us in the form of a book. To me that is a clear sign that it is man-made.

Great interview. I personally believe in God, and see no contradiction between God and science.

He believed that there's no way in which philosophy could rule out the possibility of an infinite past, and none of the arguments that he provided for the existence of God were based on such premise.
Not being able to rule out an infinite past is not evidence for such a past existing
All you have is faith. I'm just honest enough to admit it. Nothing more nothing less.,.,., 👊

Thanks to modern cosmology and physics, know we know that time is very likely to be finite in the past.
And of course there is a possibility that an alien race has already done that already - maybe even with us. So they would be our "gods"

Now, what we see here is this: the Quran orders Muslims to fight in order to establish Allah’s kingdom on earth (all of the earth) by any means. Most Islamic scholars say that one verse of the Quran (9:5) abrogates 124 verses, which are basically all the verses that talk about peace and forgiveness. This is the verse that says:
“But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular Prayers and practise regular Charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful” 9:5
I think you Muslims are so naive.
You are in trouble when you ask for the context of the verse.
It shows that not all Quranic verses are relevant today and they belong only to the 7th century. Quran is becoming outdated because Muslims can not follow them all.
Yet you guys without even reading anything blindly follow your religion.

What's really interesting is that Christianity does indeed operate within that framework as you said. If God does exist then he's likely some higher dimensional being beyond our comprehension.
rent a shill I guess. But the idea of God from what I see is a divine creator, or omnipotent being. If he was a high dimensional being I doubt he’d be a tangible physical presence we could interpret. So kind of an alien but more than that I guess.
I like your name that is hilarious
If he were a higher dimensional being, then all of the concepts that religions on earth hold onto would crumble

As the nations of the saved look upon their Redeemer, and behold the eternal glory of the Father shining in his countenance; as they behold his throne, which is from everlasting to everlasting, and know that his kingdom is to have no end, they break forth in rapturous song, “Worthy, worthy is the Lamb that was slain, and hath redeemed us to God by his own most precious blood!” GC88 651.2
There, immortal minds will contemplate with never-failing delight the wonders of creative power, the mysteries of redeeming love. GC 677.2
All the treasures of the universe will be open to the study of God’s redeemed. GC 677.3
And the years of eternity, as they roll, will bring richer and still more glorious revelations of God and of Christ. GC 678.1
“And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.” Revelation 5:13. GC 678.2
The great controversy is ended. GC 678.3

But who created that being and in what reality would it live in?
@@deetee-uk Of course there's no way to answer those questions from inside our created realm since we can't observe or measure anything beyond it. It seems to me that such a creator would either be created himself as you implied, and as such live in a realm that was also created for it by a greater being, or if our creator is indeed God, then it would by definition be self-existent with no creator and no created realm. Since there's no way to evaluate the probability that our creator has a creator, then Occam's razor would lead me to assume that our creator is the source of everything.
