Unironically, I would watch a series where the designers of these monsters just get to talk about how they got to the design of each of their monsters, what they were imagining as they created these images, and how they imagine these monsters interacting with a party.
If they don’t make this a series they hate money
also over a timelapse of them drawing the artwork of the newly designed rendition of the creature
Agreeing with this 100%, I would totally watch every episode. With just how good this one is, it’d be crazy to not try and shoot for more. There’s so much potential in this concept!

@apjtv2540 check out mapcrow’s monster redesign series!
The redesign of the black dragon is really good. It fully fits their "terrifying" personality. Truly my favourite redesign.
They really look like true natural apex predators.
The image of the redesigned Gold Dragon just coiling around this terrifying figure that is the Red Dragon is such a masterful depiction of Good vs Evil, and how in my typical fantasy Good triumphs over Evil. It is such a bad ass image in my mind, and I can't wait to describe that to my players one day
Too short! I want more insight of the making of the redesign! What was the artistic process??
They didn't use AI on these, the art was done by Chase Stone who is one of the best illustrators in the business right now.
As for his process he uses a mix of 3d and 2d processes to make these images
On dragons at 0:27 "It can talk and walk. It has motives and motivations. It's a character, it's not actually a creature, it's not a monster" This is a key that most people don't understand.
In the original form of the game the term 'monster' was a catch-all term for anything not a party.
An encounter with a 'monster' could be a band of Lawful Good Dwarves. Of course, a Monster could also mean a huge beast of a creature that acts on its own vile impulses.
please release the four hour cut, this is the most interesting thing you guys have posted in like a month, tell me everything about how every dragon is unique and cool
Gem Dragons: "Am I a joke to you?"
I mean Fizban's was so recently. I don't understand why they would exclude gems.
@@hoid9407so they can sell another book after 5-6 years
Because Fizban's is in line with the revision. Those dragons are much more dangerous at the same CR than the 2014 ones. So no need to update them.
@@hoid9407more like: it’s so recent, why reprint it?
I mean they haven’t been core since 2nd edition. They usually eventual come out but it’s been forever since they were in the main MM.
With everything that has been shown for the Classes, this really needed to highlight how the monsters have been changed to match their CR better.
this!
I think it's interesting to know how these new changes will be backward compatible without a lot of headaches for the DM.
I doubt we’re gonna get much for that until it’s time for the new monster manual next year.
i was just saying to my friend earlier, i wish they would adjust the scale of certain things. the fact that a Terrasque only stands as tall as a T-rex is pretty disappointing. in fairness that's on all fours, but still, i was expecting more the size of a town than a building.
@@Mogley-cr6ipThat’s not true; in the current monster manual the T-rex is huge while the Tarrasque is gargantuan. Even still, gargantuan in the rules only specifies the minimum size, so one gargantuan creature could be double the size of the other and take up twice as much space, it’s just that the other rules would treat them the same.
The artwork is really evocative, but if you REALLY wanna learn about dragons, nothing better than the "what they don't tell you about..." series of MrRhexx, where he explains each color/metal in detail and the histories
Counterpoint... Just get the 3.5 draconomicon. It has everything from wingspan to habits to how to run them, to how to make their lairs.
@@Oznerock compromise: agree that the 3.5 draconomicon is one of the best books for dragon lore, but MrRhexx (who actually uses content from that book, too) does have the best videos about them dragons.
@@eXyliad and its free...
@@eXyliad That is true... MrRhexx has an amazing channel - the main thing with it is that his channel is 95% just lore (Which is great), so *for a gm wanting to run a dragon*, the draconomicon is probably the most useful single source.
Though I suppose you said 'learn about' dragons so lmao I think we're just approaching the problem from different angles.
that title is terrible, Draconomicon details everything about dragons

Bring back the green dragon goose neck you can’t do this to me
Bring back the fin, get rid of the cobra hood.
There’s already a cobra dragon, it’s the Rattlyr. it’s freaking canon
In the art it looks very goose-like to me.
@@Lionwoman in the concept yes but the official art wirh it battling adventurers it’s very short neck. It’s sad and I cry
Yes! The green dragons were my fav. Look... look what they did to my boy
RIP anyone who bought Fizban's dragon book from like 3 years ago.
It would be nice if that would be sold as a physical art book sometime, I'd happily buy it! I'd glad some of the artists like Tyler Jacobson have art books of their own
You'll have to look to Elmore for some real Dragon art that exists in a book.
I'm actually bummed with the redesigns, but that's because the current ones are my first d&d dragons so they will always have a spot in my heart
Honestly same the designs as they are now are what I grew up with so I'll always be biased, but I gotta say these designs look brilliant
The ones we've had are iconic, but I also really like these new designs so far. I guess the nice thing about treating dragons as individualized characters is that we don't necessarily have to let these new ones cancel out our old favorites in our campaigns. We can headcanon them in as a new gen of upstarts compared to our old veterans, which could be fun for stories.
We definetly need an updated Tiamat Artpiece!
Would LOVE this digital art book, if only the bundle was available in the EU and UK...
They need to shut up and take our Euro money. 😅
I can buy it in eu idk what y’all mean
@@Parobro Try to proceed to checkout with physical products and you'll see.
@@twell1984 my bad but I can go to the official Europe story of wotc and buy all 3 book bundles and get all pre order benefits, it’s confirmed
womp womp euro boy
It will be cool to give all of them more unique builds. While dragons have always had super distinctive heads, their skeletal and muscular systems were all pretty much identical, with occasional variation in wing shape. But this art makes them look much more specialized for different biomes and fighting styles, very excited.
They only speak about getting the artwork if you preorder the digital AND physical, but the preorder page includes it for the digital only...
Shhh! Don't correct them when they're making a mistake.
It is also there for the digital + physical bundle
Can I just get the artwork? It's from the members of the team I actually respect
Ooooh, like that twisting through the trees green dragon.
“Hey we know we just came out with a series of $100 dragon minis, but we’re gonna change up how they all look from 5e to justify you buying it all over again.”
My very first thought when I heard about these changes. They just love retreating back to the "DnD is under-monetized" mindset 🙄
Will the Europe customers be able to buy this dragon book seperately on D&D Beyond as we do not have a physical and digital bundle?
Europe has a phys/ dig bundle
@@ParobroNo, you are either looking at the 2014 books or PHB only
@@Parobro Phys/Dig but for one corebook. You cannot order a 3-book bundle with those bonuses.
When I read redisign, I expected some statblock changes as well.
We have to wait for the Monster Manual in Feb to see those.
They've already mentioned Dragons getting SB updates from 2014, but I'm going to guess it'll just be to bring the core book in-line with FToD, +/- any tweaks to fit better with the altered core rules.
With the Gold Dragon being both a flying and aquatic drake, and since gold is highly electrically conductive, I think Gold Dragons should have both a Fire breath & a Lighting ora. If its wrapping around a red dragon, and dragging them under water (where electricity is amplified) than it seems like we could be looking at a dragon that’s like a fire breathing electric eel. Plus, electro magnetism being a part of how it attains loft for its wingless flight is dope.
The exposed skull of a Black Dragon really reminds me of the Pachycephalosaurus skull. It’s cool to think the black dragons have this extra thick corrosion proof bone that just becomes more and more prominent as they get older.
The gold dragon illustration is stunning. I want a poster of that.
As a fan of weird JRPGs for the Xbox 360, I'd have liked to see some Blue Dragon here.
This video was a fraction of the length it should have been!
Party: How do you fight that majestic creature?
DM: It's huge, so 4x4x4 creature. Just like any other creature.
Party: Is it 4x4x2 or 4x4x4 when Prone?
DM: I don't know...
Huge is 15x15ft. Gargantuan is "minimum" 20x20ft, but can be bigger.
I swear only talking about creature sizes in grids has been one of those details that's annoyed me so much during 5e.
GIVE ACTUAL SIZE MEASUREMENTS!
Yeah sure, a grid size for either how much area it controls or the space it's core is situated for where hit actually matter, but include in the monster manual entries the body length, how high they stand above the ground, a silhouette image with a human for scale.
@@zhornlegacy7936 I know, right? Even a purple worm, a Gargantuan LONG creature, is a 4x4x4 cube on a grid.
@@xiongray I'm often referring to older editions or 3rd party sources to get sizes for my monsters.
Then resizing them on VTT, usually via an image scale. Most of the time the centre of the body is kept inside the grid space for the official size, but often the image is larger, with wings, tails, tentacles, etc reaching well outside the bounding box. Example; a standard kraken has it's body centre inside the 4x4 square, but the image used has the tentacles reaching almost 30 feet outside that box.
For my table I'm rationalizing the 'core' as the part where damage actually matters. Hits to the stuff outside of that area is superficial, and doesn't impact hp, or is moving too erratically to get a clean hit.
Other creatures that are just canonically bigger are given larger grid spacing for the core, such as bringing back the old 6x6 colossal size category (use this for great wyrms).
Overall I consider this a failure of 5e. If it's requiring 3rd part, older editions, or just homebrew to supply the details and fix, then it wasn't delivered effectively. And if the direction they went with characters is any indication; 5.24e is going to have more of the same for monsters. Sizes will be given is "we don't care, just make up anything", which will be just more indication of not needing them in the first place.
Its immune to prone condition... problem solved
Good thing, that no one outside the US can order this bundle with the bonus on d&d beyond 😢 :(
Will there be any way to get the art book outside of the US? The bundle isn’t available to us, but I’d love to see the art book somehow.
DnD Beyond does not deliver outside of US. The partner sites availlable in Germany/EU apperently do not even offer a 2024 core rules bundle. 😢
You keep saying 'Everyone can get this bundle' but when I click through your link it only ships to the USA! When are you going to release it for the rest of the world?
Oh my gods I love all of these! They look so much better!
Spoken as someone who is a huge fan of 3.5's draconomicon, too.
Damn the silver dragon design is insane
a majestic absolute unit that really shows shows off that it's skin IS metallic - pretty much exactly how I would envision Bahamut
I hope the Stat Blocks of each individual type have been Redesigned to actually have MECHANICAL Distinctions between them, Because 5.0's biggest problem relating to Dragons(to me at least), was that all the Dragon types were basically just palate Swaps with different elemental Types, but were otherwise basically Identical in terms of what they ACTUALLY Do... They all had the Exact Same Attacks (Just Change out the Element and maybe the Number of Dice for their Breath), the Exact Same Ability (Yes, SINGULAR, it was Frightful presence, The fact that was the only one should be enough to tell us how BLAND the Different types of Dragons were. Ok, Fine Metallics had Change Shape and a Status effect Breath, but that's nothing), Even Ability Scores were the same(Adult Red and Adult Silver are IDENTICAL)... They Need Variety and individual personalities Reflected in their stat Blocks, like they USED to have...
3.5E Had Each type of Dragon have their own Unique Abilities, Like a Red's Ability to Melt Stone with their Breath, leaving behind a Puddle of Lava(If this one isn't in the Mechanics, it's at the very least in the Novels), Or Silver's ability to Shape and Walk on Clouds, Or the Gold's Luck Bonus... Oh and in 3.5E ALL Dragons were Spellcasters that could cast spells like a Sorcerer of Varying Levels Based on their Age Category, Bring that Back, Giving Dragons back their Spells and making it VERY Explicit that each one should have their own custom Spell list as individuals (Not just a Generic List for their type), we well as Access to Metamagics(it's VERY Weird that Dragons can't do what Sorcerers that get their powers from them can), this would Help Dragons become the PROPER Threat that they're MEANT to be, Rather than just Big Flying Lizards with Elemental Breaths(Seriously though, The fact that the ONLY Non-Physical attack thing 5E Dragons can do is their Breath Weapon is just plain Shameful to what Dragons are MEANT to represent!)... Oh and before anyone tries to go "Well that would make it more complicated, we wanted to make the Stat Blocks more Simple": NO, these are DRAGONS, they are THE Most Iconic Creature of this Game, they Deserve more respect than that, they DESERVE Special Rules and Complex Abilities... Beholders got 10 Different Eye Rays and an Anti-Magic Cone to make them FEEL like their own thing, Dragons Deserve at LEAST as much...
Question: Considering that D&D Partner sites outside US does not offer the 2024 Core Rulebook Digital & Physical Bundle, is there any way they'd be compensated for not being able to get the Gold Dragon mini?
Honestly, just being able to preorder all three core rule books, together, in one bundle would be nice. That does not seem possible at the moment.
Weird how they don't mention the obvious eastern/western dragon design influences at all. Like its strange how it look them 5 editions to go all in on the lung dragon design for golds yet they don't say anything about that.
On the website they deny the eastern influence. It's kinda crazy.
But Kara-Tur exist. (aka eastern mythology in dnd)
@@Ezullof but...why? Are they trying to say they stumbled onto a millenias old culturally significant design motif by accident?
When will we get Lung Dragons again?
I wouldn't dare deny it but if they're not confident in their breadth of asian cultures I understand not wanting to come out and say "these are asian-style dragons" same as not directly calling the red one "the archetypal welsh dragon" to stay safe, they have a bit of a bad rep integrating cultures they're not well read on and hopefully aren't stupid enough to make the same mistake again
I'm very happy with the redesigns of the Dragons I've seen thus far. I've always been confused as to why all the Dragons look so similar with the exception of their heads and wings (and colors obviously). I certainly prefer the more inspired designed of my favorite monsters rather than "Red Dragon but Green".
It's definitely risky to make them all look super different because people will like certain designs more. But it's worth it because ultimately they're all different species with different lifestyles. It makes sense and it'll be good in the long run
I was hoping for a mechanical breakdown, but this is nice too!
ReDESIGN not ReWORK
@@IntertwiningRoses I agree, and it is what I expected, but I was still hoping :D
@@IntertwiningRosesExcept that the people who create games are called game designers and game design is how the topic of creating games is usually designated. It’s a perfectly reasonable assumption. My problem with the video is that it seems to start in the middle; it really feels like it’s missing an introduction.
Wait are you guys insulting us? Were is the gem dragons? In base monster manual There are should be always minimum of 15 true dragons = 5 metallic, 5 gem and 5 chromatic.
Can we PLEASE get that gold dragon art as a 4k wallpaper? I would love it
Black dragons they could never make me hate you. They just need some antidepressants and some love. You say the new design is terrifying I say it’s hot. That’s my husband
Beautiful design! I love this artwork, and the design description from the artist is great.
Would really like to get the art book, but it's currently unavailable as a preorder bonus to those outside the US 😥
is the dragons of dnd artbook available yet on the digital bundle preorder? won't preorder till it is or at least super last minute lol
No white or blue dragon redesigns?
Love the blue dragon's design anyway, not upset if they dont change anything.
I was really hoping to see more, I've been especially curious about the White, Copper and Brass dragons, since we have seen less of their art. Still, neat to hear about the art process behind the gold.
Black dragon reminds me of a possum!
We've seen most of the new Player's Handbook, and had a look at the new Monster Manual stat blocks and this look at the redesign for dragons, but when will we see what's in the new Dungeon Master's Guide? It's really the most important book in this set, the one most in need of an update, and the one we've seen the least of. WotC, show us how you've fixed the CR/encounter system already. Why didn't you play-test it? That was the main thing that needed fixing!!
Love how the Gold dragon mimics traditional Eastern Asian dragons in its good alignment, serpentine biology, lack of need for wings, isolation from humanoids, and even aquatic nature. While the Red mimics more traditional Western European dragons with its evil alignment, more lizard-like biology, need for wings, taking residence in a manner that allows it to tyrannically reign, and non-aquatic nature. Nice inclusivity while retaining the spirit of D&D dragons.
Red Dragon = Smaug. That's the original inspiration.
Simply put, they've gone back to the 1977 MM and did 'stuff'.
When a black dragon is in the area, it starts to decay and erode the surroundings. They like abandoned places and ruined castles.
@@TheEldarGuy Oooo. Nice! Love that's level of creativity. Really shows how they're all connected to their environment and vice versa. Truly adding to their in game lore and mystical power.
And Smaug, eh? Kinda like how LOTR hobbits and orcs inspired D&D halflings nd orcs! Nice.
@@RollForSnot Green Dragons warp and twist nature, a forest becomes more sinister, that whole Greenwood to Mirkwood scenario.
@@TheEldarGuy Poisoning the land to become as toxic as they are. Love the lore! How each adult and ancient dragons power become so great they change their environment with their inherent magic oozing out.
@RollForSnot The 'Dragon Sickness' referred to in The Hobbit and related movies. A Red Dragon is greedy and vain, "I will not part with a single gold coin .. not one piece!"
On the plus side, the metallics do the same thing. Some dragons produce an aura of overwhelming pride, or a thirst for life, etc.
Which is why a Gold Dragon resides alone and away, they have that feeling of responsibility over their effects.
about the extra art bock: i was planning to pre-order the whole bundle, but as i am not living in the US i am always redirected to another webpage from D&D where there is no option to get that bundle. Any clues?
Really wanted to see the blue one...(
Based on the Tiamat art I wouldn’t get too excited.
@@judemapp8804where was the Tiamat art?
Need a longer version of this! I’m so sad that it was just an add for 5.5, because if you gave me an hour long version of the designers being able to talk about monsters like this I would absolutely listen to the whole damn thing!
Hm this made me think about the Strixhaven dragons :) A series about dragons would be nice.
Wish we got a deep dive into all 10. Making them all feel different is really cool and i love the reasonings they gave
Same. Getting to hear the creative team talk about their process and how to combine new and old ideas is fascinating.
@@corsaircaruso471 I was worried it was only Gold Dragons but im glad they took a unique approach at all of them. Im curious to see what sorts of vibes they'll embrace with the other Chromatics, cause there's a stark difference in the vibes for gold and silver. various types of evil archetypes could be attached to them, waiting for the crazy and excited one
The gold dragon is so fittingly stunning
Why couldn't they have shown all 10? And maybe a stat block. I wanna see the blue dragon!
I like these redesigns and what I like the most about paper RPGs you can still keep the older, previous dragons in the world too giving them more variety. That new gold dragon would work great as one of the oldest living golden dragons around. The gigantic red dragon could've work in a similar fashion.
The graphic at minute 0:45 is amazing…
Amazing art, too bad they didn't show them all
Is there a way to get a physical digital bundle with the alt covers?
That Gold Dragon artwork... damn :D
So, the Black Dragon is a Skullcrawler....
Love how the new silver dragon looks!
Right?!
God ive been saying this for years of how the mechanics of Dragons needs to change. Even the way they fly.
Wizkids better finish making all the 2014 version minis before jumping on these new designs. Im NOT repurchasing the thousands of dollars in minis that I have just to get the re-designs. I also dont want a mix of the old and new. :(
I am more down with the gold redesign after the explanation. I still think it is too “Lung”. I am a huge fan of its 3.5 art but the ‘24 version is cool.
Wish the dragon book was physical too, but it's still a fairly good deal
GEM DRAGONS
I see Metallic and Chromatic, but no Gem visual redesigns (which they really need...they looked terrible and more like gem dragon-shaped golems in Fizban's). Though I am happy to see the fusion of the 3rd edition forward European Dragon based Gold designs with the AD&D serpentine Lung-styled Gold Dragons making them look very unique (but I am disappointed that you don't mention that AD&D gold dragons were of the lung design and therefore the inspiration for them).
Has pre order bonuses for the bundle been confirmed to only be for USA?
Hopefully it is just a massive oversight?
The new Green Dragon design is so cool, I love the shorter wings and the serpentine features like the fangs and hood.
Really long tail also seems fitting.
I mean all books from the 2014 stuff onward is still useable so they’re not necessarily excluding it
It only took a month, but we finally hear about a perk of pre ordering
These redesigns look pretty neat.
Do we have to wait for the release of the PHB to get the art book?
I would like to know how they made dragon not suck in combat honestly, if they changes the statblock in anyway
After 1989, they did dragons dirty.
They were these powerful and mighty creatures, then they became meaningless.
All I hear from modern DMs is "Dragons need to be more powerful!"
Once upon a time, in the not too distant past (OK, 40 years ago), A Dragon could wipe out an entire party (about 6 characters) with a single breath weapon attack, and leaving only one or two characters if their saving throw was made.
@@TheEldarGuy honestly the problem with dragons is just that they are basically bags of HP that Attack, with nothing mistical or special besides breath. Dragons in fizban are much better, thus why i hope they improved dragon in monster manual as well
@riccardocorradini6713 Being old school, in my games, Dragons have access to magic and can cast spells. Gives them a little extra spice.
@@TheEldarGuy yeah i do that too, but that's never enough. Also it risks to make the dragon unbalanced fairly easy given their access to extraordinary defences and flight and such, so it's not easy to balance and encounter to be both fun abd engaging but not tpk the party. I simply would like "flash" and Supernatural/magical abilities besides claws and breath for a dragon, like fizban dragons do. I basically already homebrew that anyway, but it's much better to have something refined in an official way so to speak
Hopefully some new minis are coming to reflect some of the new designs
Very nice ❤
Gold dragon looks pretty cool but it's aquatic implication kinda steps on the toes of Bronze dragons.. They are my favorite. I wish they showed the art for them.
I mean, gold dragons have also been aquatic since forever, it is not new information haha.
I've always been more fond of the 3/3.5 and 4th edition designs of the dragons.
Oh my god that gold dragon art!
I love how the Gold Dragon design is basically a Chinese Dragon, fucking awesome!!!
PLEASE include the Necrotic Dragon (Dracolitch) if not in this but a future add-on book! Daurgothoth “the Creeping Doom" would make for a very epic big bad of a new campaign. @DNDWizzards
The reworks all look pretty good so far. I am nervous about the blue dragon though, it's my favorite dragon design of all time from any source. Would be heartbreaking if it gets ruined.
Beautiful painting
I love the artist understands the lore and theme of the gods dragons. You can immediately get a sense of what they are about by seeing the bestiary images of it.
If there would be a Print Version of this artbook I would buy IT...
Is this the dragon of the dragon & dungeons?
What about the gem dragons?
Does this mean they will be redesigning the minis as well? After I just bought the whole set? MONEY GRAB!
Will there ever be a physical version of the artbook?
Green dragon looks rad af
Love all the art!
I NEED THAT DRAGON BOOK! Can i get the book by itself?
That gold dragon is govong big Amatsu vibes.
Love the art, hoping the write-ups haven't been finalized...the typos kinda bring it down a bit
I just love, as someone who DMs in Eberron, that since dragons dont necessarily fall under the archetypes in Forgotten Realms, my characters can meet an ancient black dragon that's just a total teddy bear.
Im sorry 🤔 why would a red dragon leave its lair to go to the coast and certainly have the disadvantage? And how is a gold dragon perfect for taking out a red?
I wanted to see what they did to ice this is a must have grab
Will there be a physical copy of the art book?
Fun! The book that's not available to everyone has exclusive art! Thanks!
