    A possible tactic for high level Great Old One Warlocks: Cast Hex on your target, debuffing their Intelligence. Since Hex is an Enchantment spell, you cast it without verbal or somatic components. Next round, cast Feeblemind on the target using your 8th level Mystic Arcanum. Since the target has their Intelligence Hexed, they get disadvantage on the saving throw due to Eldritch Hex. And since Feeblemind is also an Enchantment spell, you also cast it without verbal or somatic components. It's an almost completely undetectable way to potentially melt someone's brain.

    I adore the Celestial patron for the Warlock. In the past few years, I became aware of a creature in Armenian mythology called the Aralez, which is described as a Celestial canine with resurrection abilities. To my knowledge, the Aralez has yet to make an appearance in D&D, and it being there can provide some lore for the inspiration for Resurrection spells, and give a potential new Celestial connection for a Warlock.

    Appreciate how they sorta acknowledged Eldritch Blast was used too much. Now that you can customize other cantrips and all that this could be alleviated. My main issue with the Warlock was how the way to play it without cirppling yourself recquired you to build into Eldritch Blast a lot. What's the point of a highly customizable class when there's incentive to only do one thing? Like yeah there will always be min/max ways of playing a class but Eldritch Blast was just too good to the point everything you'd get would go towards upgrading it further.

    • @haerdalis84

      @@elegantmonkey6111 A reasonable point, but misses haedalis's point that it applies to every beam for EB, while all other cantrips are single attacks. At level 11, Fire Bolt's 3d10 becomes 3d10+5, while Eldritch Blast is 3 x (1d10+5), for 21.5 vs 31.5 average damage (not counting accuracy, but that will scale both the same). So it still scales at +CHA damage per cantrip upgrade after the first tier.

    Wait.... if agonizing and repelling blast affect any cantrip:
    Pact of the Blade
    Booming Blade
    Agonizing Blast
    Repelling Blast
    Pact Greatsword
    17 CHA
    Cast Hex, then Booming Blade, 2d6 + 3, +3 AGAIN for Agonizing, a d6 for hex, and pushes the enemy back. Enemy's turn, they have to run towards you to attack, that's a d8 +3 for booming blade and agonizing, a d6 for hex. So 4d6 + 1d8 + 9 damage at level 2. Or only +6 if the agonizing doesn't hit twice for booming blade's 2 different damages.
    Next two levels, take Paladin for smite, add 2d8, and use feat to go to 18 CHA for a total of:
    4d6 + 3d8 + 12.
    With numbers like that, who needs extra attack?

    • @normal6483
      @normal6483 7 месяцев назад +2

      Celestial Warlock can add Cha to fire damage spells at level 6, so Agonizing Green-Flame Pack of the Blade will do 2d6+1d8+3+3 to the first target can 1d8+3 to the second, though if you increase Charisma you can bump that up to +4 on all of those numbers. Eventually you're getting Lifedrinker for +4 more damage, and if you get a magic weapon you're going to be increasing your damage even more. All without a spell slot, but you can always Hex and Smite if you prefer.

    • @danhooper3723
      @danhooper3723 6 месяцев назад

      Incorrect. Hex and agonizing blast will not apply to damage not associated with an attack roll, and Paladin smite is now a bonus action and a spell, so it will not work with this.
      edit: Now I see the change to the agonizing blast text, but it doesn't change much. Booming blade does normal weapon damage then the spell damage if the creature moves, so the agonizing blast damage would only count toward the specific spell damage. ( eg. On a hit, the target suffers the weapon attack’s normal effects) So the Damage is 2d6+3 on a successful hit, 1d6 from hex , then 1d8+3 if the creature moves. So its, 3d6+1d8+6 (22) and at level 2 that's still very good After 5th level then the additional 1d8 thunder damage would be affected by agonizing blast.

Levels 1-2 can be explained as your character studying occult, otherworldly lore and power in general until you finally choose or get noticed by your patron later on. But I’m not gonna lie, Jeremy’s wrong about the venomous snake being the mechanically best familiar. The owl is infinitely better.

    • @redhoodie4111

The owl can just fly over people, so flyby is basically worthless unless youre in a small room, and since Find Familiar familiars cant attack unless youre playing a Chain Pact warlock, why are you even bringing your familiar into combat to begin with? Thematically, would you already be aware of "what" your patron is/where your power is coming from? For example, do I already know from level 1 i'm getting powers from a fae patron, but i'm not like officially serving them until level 3? I guess i'm a little confused on the thematic of the subclass choice/when it happens.

      You study and draw your power from general occult teachings starting at level 1, and a patron of specific occult abilities only notices you personally starting at level 3, and decides to grant you a portion of their own power in exchange for something.
      For example you could study the psychic disturbances of eldritch unknowings for two levels, and then as you reach your third warlock level a specific patron of eldritch unknowings (a Great Old One patron) finally notices you studying them, as you are otherwise completely insignificant to them.

    If you want warlocks to do a default action other than Eldritch blast, just allowing them to use their invocations with any other Cantrip is not enough. At 11th level who is going to choose Ray of frost or chill touch for 2d8 + 5 (agonising blast Cha 20) + extra cantrip feature over EB for 3d10 +15. OK it might occasionally happen but not a lot, and not enough for the warlock not to continually spam EB.
    I think that one possibility is that each Pact has a specific cantrip linked to their Patron (Firebolt for Fiend , Mind Sliver for GOO) etc. that works as EG does with multiple attacks (at 5th, 11th, 17th) rather than increased damage, allowing the stacking of Agonising blast damage and other invocation effects.. Something like this was done for D&D Online and it works well.
    Alternatively a new feat (or possibly Warlock invocation) called Cantrip master:
    'Taking this feat gives a bonus to Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma. Secondly at higher levels when you cast a cantrip which requires either a ranged or a melee spell attack role you may change the increased damage dice gained at 5th, 11th and 17th level into multiple attacks doing one dice of damage. Two separate 1 dice damage attacks at 5th level, 3 at 11th level and 4 at 20th level. Each attack may be made at any creature within range, with a separate attack role for each spell attack. Where the attack has a secondary effect e.g. Ray of frost reduces speed by 10 feet until the start of your next turn, this is applied to only the first hit with the spell not all targets.
    The aim would be mainly to get Warlocks to use something other than Eldritch blast and give a little boost to a Draconic Sorcerers damage. But also to provide a bit more utility to cantrips.
    A similar feat might also be for Cantrips that do damage if the targets fails a saving throw.

      @@cmdrvimes72 I think Hexblade and especially Bladesinger were a little bit too far away from their main class, and a bit broken.
      I think they decided to NOT insert them because they are inherently problematic, especially with the new weapon mastery system. They need to see how this new ruleset works and then carefully decide what to do.
      I don't think there will be a lot of mixing between 5e and 5.5e. They must grant compatibility, but we all know 5e will be replaced by 5.5e

    As someone new to dnd I don't understand why Warlocks don't just have more spell slots like sorcerers and wizards, is it just to make the class different from the other two?, it's not like warlocks get more powerful spells and therefore less spell slots so to me it just seems like this is the way warlocks have always been so let's keep it like that but soft remove it by giving them progressively more ways to get spell slots back, like why not just remove this system what depth does it add how does it make the class better or more fun?
    Side note getting all your power from someone else kills the warlock power fantasy for me you're just someone else's bitch, instead of this cool powerful dark magic user bending demons to there will, casting all kinds of exclusive necromancy spells ECT
    Do you agree? Where am I off the mark?

    Love these changes. BUT. I guess I understand why they did it, but subclass at level 3 for Warlock (and Sorcerer, by the way) makes NO sense. The patron is the source of their power and agreeing a pact with them is a life event. What's the rationale for them having powers at level 1? Does the DM need to bake in an encounter with a patron of the player's choice late level 2 now? That could be fun, but could be onerous. Maybe I'm missing something, but I just feel they got way too rigid about this across the board level 3 subclass.

      As a DM I had to do an patron enconter for one of my players who wanted dip pally and then go warlock. It sucked a lot because i had to fit the patron and his interest into the lore and the player chose a pact that wasn’t fit into my story. Starting the pact at level one is so much better.

      Think of it like this.
      You've made a pact with a demon, but he doesn't want to give you his cool demon-specific tricks until you've proven yourself. You get generic warlock tricks in the meantime. Personally I'm probably going to choose pact of the chain 90% of the time now because I like the idea that your pact familiar is an agent of your patron keeping an eye on you.
      Edit: Or you could have a patron in mind, but are building up your occult power enough to be noticed by them. Y'know, like a cultist.

    • @GuardianKoran
      @GuardianKoran 7 месяцев назад

      The patron gives you generic warlock powers at levels 1-2. At level 3, you start getting patron-specific abilities. :)
      (The same argument has always applied to paladin oaths. You don't narratively just start swearing an oath and getting magic powers from that at level 3; you just get abilities of that particular flavor at that level, but narratively, you've always gotten those abilities from your convictions.)

    1. I like how the Warlock class and subclass images have a common element of the magic orbs. I'm guessing those are supposed to be the gifts from your Patron.
    2. Not a fan of the subclass lvl changes. The whole point of the subclasses are making the Pact with your Patron; how can you gain the gifts from your Patron before you make a pact with your Patron... which is where your magic comes from to begin with? Same with Paladins and Sorcerers. Those three should be Subclass at lvl 1, period.
    3. Love the fixes to the Invocations, Subclasses, and especially the new Pact of the Chain Familiars; I'm going to love playing with the Wonderous Sphinx. I also can't wait for the updated Noble Genie down the road.
