The woman leader from the Hunters, Kathleen, is a new character. They introduced her to give this group a bit more background and why they are chasing and trying to kill you in the game/series. The bearded guy, the "officer" of Kathleen, is btw Jeffrey Pierce who did the voice over of Tommy in the game.
I like that they added more background to the hunters in the show and did a pretty good job of it, but I think it actually makes less sense why they attacked Joel and Ellie in the show as opposed to in the game. In the game, the hunters overthrew FEDRA several years ago, so it's quite easy to rationalise how a group of battle-hardened revolutionaries, over the course of years with no enemy left to fight, would eventually turn to banditry. In the show, the revolution literally just happened, so it's a lot harder to justify. They just took control and then immediately started attacking any random passers by they see? It's not totally outlandish, but I wish they would have had a smoother, more explainable transition from freedom fighters to cold-blooded killers. Sorry for necroposting on a comment from 18 months ago, I just found this channel and I'm going on a binge

FUn fact: The guy playing Perry in the military group with the beard is the guy who did Tommy's voice in the game. He sounds just like Tommy when you listen to him.
While Joel was tapping triangle for dear life, I kept saying just shoot up, Ellie. Distract him! Then she paralyzed the guy and I was like…that works too. I’m glad we got the Ellie saves Joel with a gun scene, even if it wasn’t in the Hotel.
I'm loving the characterization between these two. Ellie's pun book that she kept from Riley, Joel teaching her how to properly care a gun insinuating the trust he's instilling in her, not to mention how quickly they still get in a lot of progression in despite the short runtime. They waste no time with this. The fact they even gave some depth to some of the hunters here is also a massive plus.
As soon as I saw her pull out *THE* joke book I actually threw my fists sky high. And I’m so glad that they added the diarrhea joke because I was afraid they would *run* out of ideas. But seriously, this show is so insanely faithful to the game that it doesn’t feel like a show but almost like and expansion pass/extended cut of the game. Even though I do miss the scene of Joel teaching Ellie how to use a rifle and then saying “No matter what happens, you make every show count” I still love him teaching her how to use the pistol because a) it shows the bond between these two growing and b) it tells the audience that Ellie had some training from FEDRA so her learning quickly feels natural. And now we are getting to see the more human side of the people who were trying to kill Joel and Ellie in Kansas City (instead of Pittsburgh like in the game). Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin said their inspiration came from how throughout history there have been cases where the revolution that usurps a repressive regime becomes just as bad if not worse than the previous regime. Also loved that we got to see Jeffery Pierce (aka Tommy from the games) finally show up in the show!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
They are doing incredible. My wife is ready to play pt1 remake and I’m holding off until we finish the show. I can’t tell if I’m more excited to watch the show, watch something I love with the person I love, or have the person I love play the game I fell in love with. I think this show honestly is designing for this exact experience
Likely Nick Offerman could get nominated for for the outstanding guest actor in a drama series for either the Emmy or Golden Globe categories but drama is always a very tight race every year

Whoa! Ahhhh!" Etc. (I'm paraphrasing.) And on the LEFT you've got... big smile! Clearly *loving* the adaptation... noting the similarities. There's something just DELIGHTFUL about the contrast! When ellie walked away in the shop scène...i felt for her... mad af i think we are all joel and ellie is all of our daughters..i always hate seeing her being anything other than a child tbh... its a theme here...one i never really appreciated but always felt deep down... looking at everything bad in tlou the one constant seems to be protection of innocence...even kathleen had those vibes.... well until she went all missery chops on us.

Unless you already knew about them, most people playing the game for the first time didn't find any of the joke conversations.

Just go back and replay the games man . Won’t hurt . Games been through the ps3 , then remastered on ps4 and now remade on ps5. Games one of the best to ever come out and it really sticks out of alot of other games so you definitely should play it again to get a refresher. I of course love the games way more then the show and the choice of the characters looks in the game as in the show I don’t like the actor choices in terms of there appearance that don’t look anything like them from the game

Yep. She terrifies me, because she looks like that quiet and ordinary neighbour or that colleague who gets angry and starts talking about death penalty and torture whenever there's a major news report about a gruesome crime which got solved.
Anthony should stop focusing on the differences in the game and enjoy the show. It is good that they are deviating from the source material. In the game these dudes were called “Hunters” and we don’t get any context into who they are and what they do. They are bad just to be bad. In a show they can explore these characters more and show how this world is more grey and how everyone you kill is not just an NPC but real humans.
"I don't really miss the action', she says here. WHAT? This is a story that is based on action (role playing is action) and not having any in two back to back episodes lowers the quality of the show. Making this show seem more like a bait and switch (as if last week's episode wasn't a big enough clue to that) to serve The Message. I mean, let me add it up. Homosexuals living in Paradise despite the world around them falling apart. EVERY single leader of the groups (even in this one) is a woman (and/or minority). The main character having been race/swapped. IF I remember correctly, Druckman said he wanted the show to veer away from violence and focus on the drama.
When people that have played the game praise it, 99 times out of 100 they are praising the story, the characters - they are not praising the action (which is great, but it's just there because it's a game).
@@jhornacek I would urge you to watch ANY of the miniseries from the 1970s (Master of the Game, Stand, Winds of War, and dozens more besides) and you will see that it does not matter if the miniseries runs for two nights (As V the Alien Invasion miniseries did) or three nights (As V: The Final Battle did) or any of the longer, character driven, miniseries (Stand, Roots, Winds of War or any of the miniseries based on the stories of John Jakes). While most of the miniseries from the 1970s were based on bestselling novels (the video games of the age) and had to be shortened or otherwise edited to fit the time they had to run, what they did not do--and what you defended the Last of Us for doing--was to cut the action. They managed (because the screen writers were picked based on talent and not because they checked a box) to fit in nearly all of the action, and even in the shorter 2 day ones, all of the character development. In this series only episode 3 managed to do the character development but it was light on the action, and still the characters (and the actors playing them) were successful enough to be compared to the miniseries of the1970s.

The point of referring you to the older (better written) TV movies is so that you can see for yourself the differences. It is possible to write both exciting (action packed) and character driven shows. Remember, the purpose of adapting something to film is to make people want to pursue the original source. An adaptation like Last of Us did not provide a sales BUMP to the game, so as an adaptation it failed.

The character playing cathleen is trash. They casted a soccer mom to play a lead of a crazy group of killers. They easily could have gotten some bad azz chick or dude to play that part. Her character sucks and I really hope gets killed off next episode.

Anthony should stop focusing on the differences in the game and enjoy the show. It is good that they are deviating from the source material. In the game these dudes were called “Hunters” and we don’t get any context into who they are and what they do. They are bad just to be bad. In a show they can explore these characters more and show how this world is more grey and how everyone you kill is not just an NPC but real humans.

"I don't really miss the action', she says here. WHAT? This is a story that is based on action (role playing is action) and not having any in two back to back episodes lowers the quality of the show. Making this show seem more like a bait and switch (as if last week's episode wasn't a big enough clue to that) to serve The Message. I mean, let me add it up. Homosexuals living in Paradise despite the world around them falling apart. EVERY single leader of the groups (even in this one) is a woman (and/or minority). The main character having been race/swapped. IF I remember correctly, Druckman said he wanted the show to veer away from violence and focus on the drama.
When people that have played the game praise it, 99 times out of 100 they are praising the story, the characters - they are not praising the action (which is great, but it's just there because it's a game).
@@jhornacek I would urge you to watch ANY of the miniseries from the 1970s (Master of the Game, Stand, Winds of War, and dozens more besides) and you will see that it does not matter if the miniseries runs for two nights (As V the Alien Invasion miniseries did) or three nights (As V: The Final Battle did) or any of the longer, character driven, miniseries (Stand, Roots, Winds of War or any of the miniseries based on the stories of John Jakes). While most of the miniseries from the 1970s were based on bestselling novels (the video games of the age) and had to be shortened or otherwise edited to fit the time they had to run, what they did not do--and what you defended the Last of Us for doing--was to cut the action. They managed (because the screen writers were picked based on talent and not because they checked a box) to fit in nearly all of the action, and even in the shorter 2 day ones, all of the character development. In this series only episode 3 managed to do the character development but it was light on the action, and still the characters (and the actors playing them) were successful enough to be compared to the miniseries of the1970s.

Again, the game has lots of action, but when people praise it, the action is rarely the number one selling point. It's the story and characters that they love. If they made a TV show where it was all action every episode people would say "Why do people love this game? It's just a Michael Bay movie turned into a series."
@@jhornacek Perhaps surprisingly I agree with you. IF it were all action that would not be a good thing because there is no balance. The point of referring you to the older (better written) TV movies is so that you can see for yourself the differences. It is possible to write both exciting (action packed) and character driven shows. Remember, the purpose of adapting something to film is to make people want to pursue the original source. An adaptation like Last of Us did not provide a sales BUMP to the game, so as an adaptation it failed.
Still a bit disappointed, episode 3 is only a drama about gay and episode 4 is only a story about parent and child be like. Where's the cool action? 🙄

The character playing cathleen is trash. They casted a soccer mom to play a lead of a crazy group of killers. They easily could have gotten some bad azz chick or dude to play that part. Her character sucks and I really hope gets killed off next episode.
