Kia ora Matt, I have just bought an A6 BiTDI 2014 85000km, it will be towing my 2200kg boat around the New Zealand country side with it, wish me luck!!! I love the unassuming grandpa look, I took my teenagers sons friends for a ride in it..... they said "urgh really, an old mans station wagon" I slammed my right foot to the floor and that dropped their jaws to the floor!
I have a "ballistic missile" 3.0 BiTdi version in Black. Now on 152k miles, had it for 3 years, have no idea what i'll replace it with, it is the best all-rounder i've owned. 0-60 5 and a bit seconds, and if you drive sensibly you get 45 to the gallon, comfortable, fast, and with a private plate on it sits amongst much newer cars very well. Good review - and give the BiTdi a go - it's good fun (it also has the ZF 8-speed tiptronic gearbox).

Plus, at speed, the suspension lowers itself to improve aerodynamics and economy. I recently got a new SQ5 and whilst it's very nice and pretty quick the 8 speed torque convertor auto isn't anywhere near as nice as the 7 spd DSG in the A6 and not being able to afford the Vorsprung model, the SQ5 runs on steel springs instead of air (it's not even an optional extra now). The A6 Allroad (C7 model, 2011 to 2018) really are great cars.
Hi Matt that is my 10p rolling there! Seriously I traded the A6 for the aruba range rover you drove 7 months back. Why do this? Additionally, the pumps are not always the culprit in " failing suspension" it can (if you are lucky) be DIY repaired by splitting a bracket and cleaning up a small area of corrosion in the alloy and then reassembling.

However,,,, as a tow vehicle I could not get it to work… It was ordered from the factory with the towing pack and Audi made several updates to the suspension software but never cured the problem - it used to pitch and roll - and back to back testing with the same trailer and load on the old Allroad never reproduced any problems - so out went the new Allroad after 10 months, part exchanged against an R8 to get the best trade-in price, and we kept the old ‘05 Allroad still performing towing duties, although as a more sedate pace!!!!! @@allosaurusfragilis7782 I'd go so far as to say it's usually not the case. Some SUVs offer reasonable hatchback-size boot space, but when you consider the size of the vehicle, it's really quite pathetic.
Love these, still probably my favourite Audi interior, great quality and very solid. By the way, I'm pretty sure A6s use the torsen mechanical Quattro rather than Haldex.
When I was looking for a 4X4 estate I had narrowed my search down to an A6 allroad or a Volvo XC70. The Volvo stood out for me as it’s more comfortable and more practical. Also having now owned it for 8 months and taken it off road several times, it’s extremely capable and doesn’t have the gimmicky ride height selector which will only go wrong in time to come!
A neighbour has one, which has been outside his house for what feels like ages. Its got a private reg so not sure what year but its at least 14 years old. What's impressed me is it still looks exactly the same as when he got it. I mean exactly. He looks after it but it's really impressive.
@@hughmarcus1 no only adaptive suspension 4c from comfort, sport to advanced. 1 original front strut is like 900 eur Volvo but Monroe copy its like 250-320 eur.
I have actually driven a bi turbo avant. Unlike a regular diesel where the power tends to die down after a couple of seconds it pulled soo much better top end
A well cared for A6 diesel is almost bullet proof. Their reputation for being boring is undeserved. Fifth gear did a track test of a A5 diesel vs the iconic Audi Quattro from the 1980s. The Quattro won but by a layer of paint in the difference. We forget just how good modern diesels are, we dismiss 200bhp as not enough whilst ignoring the much more important massive torque from low revs which nearly pulls the bearings off some gearboxes (I'm looking at you Alfa 159 JTDm) The flexibility and drivability of diesels today is unsurpassed by petrol. I can't believe the yanks completely ignore them. Anyway, love the channel and how your presenting style and content has evolved. I don't doubt it's a massive amount of work but the thought and effort you put in is evident in the final product and you look like you're enjoying yourself. Continued success my man. Cheers 🥂
I’ve got a 2017 bitdi with the twin turbo v6 diesel. 0-60 in 5.5s 155mph limited I had the previous model and the suspension lasted to 150000 before any work and didn’t take it to Audi. Never had any other problems. My new one has 74000 miles and I’ve had it for a year. It will also tow 500kg more than the standard a6, that’s 2500kg so enough for me to tow large cars and it’s great on rough tracks. It’ll do 40mpg on the motorway if sensible. It’s the best family car by far if you don’t want a Range Rover. Make sure you change all the fluids regularly. I wouldn’t go to Audi in my experience. Go for 2017 on of possible to get CarPlay, wireless charging and other goodies it’s also ULEZ compliant. Get the bitdi if you can they’re rare but very desirable with good residuals and when they brought out the new model in 2019 you couldn’t get that engine. Sadly Audi no longer sells the allroad in the UK, only 250 units were sold last year so it’s a rare car.
Manufacturers only really care about the first 3-5 years of a car's life because this is the warranty period and the common time that first owners (esp businesses) own the car. By the time any issues are apparent, they have usually produced a revised model which they'll claim doesn't have the issues.......
There are still loads of them on roads and for years to come. Even older models. It's some of the older and cheaper Japanese cars that are disappearing fast. One thing is the prestige but they are still better to drive than some newer mediocre cars. Even if the maintenance costs offsets the older Audi or Merc there are still buyers taking a chance.
Thanks Matt, I have been waiting for quite some time for you to get to the Allroad A6. Just like I was suspecting, great car but with many possible (and expensive) problems if not properly maintained. Any chance you could do the Volvo XC70 in the future? One of the later models, say 2014 onward. Cheers!
07:25 Haldex servicing. My A5 Quattro has just passed 307000 miles and I’ve never had the Haldex four wheel drive system serviced. The advice given to me was that if the system was sealed then that was how the manufacturer intended it to remain. Therefore don’t fiddle with it!
@@coops1964 your A5 is probably Torsen no, not Haldex? Good to see 3.0 V6 is capable of such high mileages as considering one. My only issue is I want auto but tiptronic seems fairly reliable.
Interesting review and what I like about this car is its an alternative to the ever growing army of SUV's so deserves credit for that alone! Like its understated looks and Audi know how to do an interior, the repair bills sound a bit scary so a definite "caveat emptor" on this one!
Totally agree regards using Audi for servicing, they are not as expensive for routine services as you might think, and get them to do the gearbox service, somewhere around £250 for a 2.0 tfsi DSG/s-tronic
My C7 is the best car I have ever had. Was devastated when Audi dropped the allroad for the UK Market. My plan was to replace the C7 three or so years before the copper tops come in and get ten more years of fun. No idea what to do now.
The gulf between making and editing a video and it making it to live. Prince(?) Charles. How life can change in a heartbeat. BTW another great vid. Thanks. Make a great tow car that… (caravanner here).
Totally agree - the A6 just seems a bit more purposeful. The A4 kind of feels like a slightly bigger A3, whereas the A6 comes across as more of a ‘proper’ car (forgive the poor adjective)
Yeah, but the size of the A6 is a bit... shit. It's at that point where size becomes a problem. (talking about European roads, I'm certain in the US it would feel quite "nimble") I had a Lexus LS which was pretty much exactly the size of the A6 Avant and there were moments I cursed my car's size. Was actually the main reason I sold it. I loved everything about it, but hated the size.
Had an A4 of 2015 and as a family car it was just a bit small for the purpose. It felt that over time since late 90's other models like A6, A8 or even VW Golf had grown bigger and roomier but A4 backseat was just as useless for having 4 adults in car as it was in late 90's model. Why then have premium priced estate?! Insurance, tax and maintenance is expensive and others offer better warranty now. Even Merc has decent warranty that can be extended, for Audi the rules for that are stringent and not customer friendly.
Another car of choice for executives here in Prague. 4 wheel drive is useful for going to the family cottage / skiing during the snow season. But I've never seen one with colour coordinated wheel arch extensions. A friend has one - it's very comfortable, and even when packed to the gills, it has a good turn of speed. Nice sound system too.
Was waiting for this review. Keep up the good work Matt. Thumbs up from the Netherlands. On topic: Very happy with my 2014 bitdi allroad. Very practical and understated. Adequately fast. Much better road manners than our family hauling SUV of the Discovery 5 variety.
All the car that you would ever need. Research shows that the majority of owners run their own business and it makes good sense for someone who needs a workhorse and a luxury / family car without owning more than one vehicle. I ran a C7 version until it had over 150k on it and then my father in law ran it until 178k, with the only thing going wrong being the swirl flaps on the manifold (a well known weakness on the V6 tdi) These things will go 95% of where a rangerover will go off-road which is more then enough for pulling a horse box, family camping, the kids sports day and the half inch of snow that we get in the UK once every 5 years. Go up to the Highlands of Scotland and they are everywhere. If you can find a 5 year old A6 allroad with 50k on it, you’ve hit the sweet spot for a used one 👍 It’ll put a smile on your face in dynamic drive mode as well.
I’ve just had the DSG serviced today on my Touran at 186k, it’s fifth gearbox service. Not all of us neglect DSG oil changes, especially as to I tend keep my cars to about 250k. I’d prefer to use the main dealer and pay the £249 rather than several grand for a gearbox rebuild.
Love the build quality of Audi product but the driving dynamics never excite - great if you want an appliance to get you from A to B however I’ve yet to feel rewarded by driving one well. Doesn’t make it a bad review though Matt 👍
Hey Matt, loving the channel pal. I've just given away my 16 year old Transit Tourneo to a mate with a bunch of kids, who is turning it into a camper. Meanwhile, I bought a nearly new Subaru Forester EBoxer, for my 50 mile daily commute. I'm really happy with the Subaru. I also used to have an old 2001 Toyota Landcruiser Colorado, which was bullet proof with 230k on the clock. I still see it being driven around Stockport now after 2+ years. Anyway, keep up the vids pal, your humour is spot on, and giving Stockport a name. 👏💪👍
Great review Matt - I suppose the real question is would you trade a 4.4 TDV8 Range Rover for the A6 All Road ? It probably does 85% of the tasks the RR can do for maybe 50% of the cost. But I guess you pays your money and takes your choice. Both big and complex, demand meticulous servicing and could both bite you in the wallet. Certainly a car I've been considering for quite some time.
There is no Haldex on these one. They use a torsen diff. They don't need a service (on paper). But new gearbox oil (where the torsen also is located) helped me for less quattro rumble when taking a tight corner at parking speed. (after 200.000km) About the chain. To replace it, there is no need to remove the engine, only the gearbox (and a lot of other things...). Only on the BITDI it needs to be removed. But for the rest, great review. Always nice to see reviews from "older" cars that are still pretty up-to-date for today's standards.
Ah, the Haldex. Used in many cars, notably, the Land Rover Freelander 1 and 2 and Range Rover Evoque. Highly recommend these are serviced at the same time as the gearbox as they almost ALWAYS get forgotten about. If they fail, not only do you loose the main selling point of owning a Land Rover but they ain’t cheap to replace.
What an excellent in depth review. You could charge people for theses as a comedy show or car show. Your presenting style is excellent keep up your good work 👏👏👏
Might be the poorer cousin but I'm sticking with the skoda superb 4x4, paid off balloon payment last October just under £5k, now has 85k on clock, it might have a lesser architecturally designed aluminium knurled finish but it will get me from a-b in the same time and carry as much kit inside. Perhaps one small gripe is the ride height is a tad low, but hey, I'm not doing any meaningful off roading and I bet most other 4x4 drivers don't either, unless living in agricultural/deep country locations.
"I bet most other 4x4 drivers don't either, unless living in agricultural/deep country locations." Exactly, and if they do, they usually buy a proper off-road car to be able to beat the road conditions when things get rough in winter etc. My friend drives a 280HP 4x4 Superb and it's a great car I must admit.
Considered the A6 Allroad but thought it was too fussy for real work. I tow a trailer and farm and went for an XC70 and that was 200,000 miles ago. Same Haldex 4x4 and with servicing it is bulletproof. Oh and a lot cheaper.
Great review! Iv got the Bitdi in white with upgrades Plus the difference Matt it has the 8 speed box as against the 7 speed in the less versions 0 to 60 5.3 45 mpg Active exhaust system I’ll bring it one day you can do a review R
Great and detailed review as usual, i may be able to get one of these at auction, but i know the history of it which gives me an advantage. Not too sure what sound system is in it as standard though.
Liked and subscribed! Thanks for the video! I want to buy VW Passat Alltrack 2013 as they are quite expensive, how does that compare to audi A4 and how about Engine, DSG and Hadlex service- how often for 2.0 tdi? And yes agree not many people servoe DSG Gearboxes... I just had mine serviced both Engine and DSG oil and filter changed
I don't like Audi's, but I own one, because they're great cars. I have the 3.0 turbo diesel Q5 quattro & use it for work (plumber). They make a lot of sense.
I wouldn’t have anything but a diesel presently. Effortless performance and economy others can only dream about. Buy something like this, keep it 5 years and wait for an EV with genuine 500+ mile range to be made. Aye, that’ll do.
This particular car is missing adjustable leg rests which I think every car should have. It's a good thing though that it has adjustable head rests, I wouldn't buy a car without them 🙂
Nice car but as you say complicated and expensive if it goes wrong. The simpler A4 seems a better bet or even a Passat or Superb if you need the space and 4WD. Great video as usual.
I bought a new A6 Allroad back in 2013 - it’s the only car we haven’t wanted to sell since. It does everything and is a superb general use car. We are deeply fortunate (after a lifetime of hard work) to also have a Bentley Continental GTC for sunny days and Range Rover for holidays but the A6 allroad does everything else. My wife won’t get rid of it - it’s the only one she likes to drive. Even after nine years, it still looks modern and goes like a train.
Great review Matt, I like these but prefer the A4 variant. Also, I think the A4/5/6’s have a traditional Quattro system that doesn’t require servicing, rather than the haldex found in the A3/TT’s etc.

I think you might be right. My passat four motion, uses the Haldex system which gets an oil change at 40 k approx. Not sure if quattro needs it.
Yep no Haldex crap on higher ends Audis
When I was looking for a 4X4 estate I had narrowed my search down to an A6 allroad or a Volvo XC70. The Volvo stood out for me as it’s more comfortable and more practical. Also having now owned it for 8 months and taken it off road several times, it’s extremely capable and doesn’t have the gimmicky ride height selector which will only go wrong in time to come!
Doesn't the XC70 have air suspension?
@@hughmarcus1 mine does as an optional extra on the rear I don’t need to mess with it. Keeps the car level when loaded with people and luggage
Good choice. Volvos are excellent
We forget just how good modern diesels are, we dismiss 200bhp as not enough whilst ignoring the much more important massive torque from low revs which nearly pulls the bearings off some gearboxes (I'm looking at you Alfa 159 JTDm)
The flexibility and drivability of diesels today is unsurpassed by petrol. I can't believe the yanks completely ignore them.
Anyway, love the channel and how your presenting style and content has evolved. I don't doubt it's a massive amount of work but the thought and effort you put in is evident in the final product and you look like you're enjoying yourself.
Continued success my man.
Cheers 🥂
Because fuel is peanuts and mpg is somewhat an afterthought.
I love the simple looks of the car. Subtle and ballistic - Perfect Sleeper
Luxurious, capable and tastefully understated!
Today at work a customer came in with the RS6 Avant in sprint blue💙
My personal in love car... Audi estates are such lookers
Great colour
I’ve got a 2017 bitdi with the twin turbo v6 diesel. 0-60 in 5.5s 155mph limited
I had the previous model and the suspension lasted to 150000 before any work and didn’t take it to Audi.
Love a big Audi. I currently have a 12 plate A6 Avant and it's basically the same vehicle. Brilliant and perfect family wagon! 👌
I know several Audi owners and ALL had air compression problems - one was only 7 months old (the car not the driver).
Cheers!
Another brilliant review, nice a6 but I like the plastic wheel arches are nice think they add to the look.
07:25 Haldex servicing. My A5 Quattro has just passed 307000 miles and I’ve never had the Haldex four wheel drive system serviced. The advice given to me was that if the system was sealed then that was how the manufacturer intended it to remain. Therefore don’t fiddle with it!
That's good going. Is it automatic? And what engine?
This model isn’t haldex, it’s Torsen.
@@ln5747 manual gearbox with the 3.0 v6 tdi engine.
@@coops1964 your A5 is probably Torsen no, not Haldex?
Good to see 3.0 V6 is capable of such high mileages as considering one. My only issue is I want auto but tiptronic seems fairly reliable.
Thanks for the Liters/100km conversions at the bottom!
This car can easily run 800.000 miles if serviced regularly. Mine is at 400.000 and still no major issues. Great car!
Fuel Matt, got my xc60 b4, Durham to Manchester airport, just under 70, and 53.5 mpg brilliant.
Was it the last generation if these with the 2.7 td that were a time bomb? Very sensible but also unmatched in its dullness.

You need to update your ad on the website Matt. It's not just the choice of the Prince of Wales, it's the choice of the King!
Should add a few £k! 😂
Sadly yes. I didn’t anticipate that when I was writing the advert 😢
Might be one going cheap, He'll be sitting in the back of a Bentley now 😆
I have a van at the moment but when I retire, not long, this will be the car that I buy.
We looked at leasing a 3.0 diesel one of these or the A4 Allroad. Ridiculous prices - SUVs seem a lot cheaper. I would much prefer this over the SUV.
Crossovers are more popular, that's why!
Quattro feels nice when launching from the traffic lights.
We call that Audi the four circles of doom make sure you’re best mate is the local bank management
(talking about European roads, I'm certain in the US it would feel quite "nimble")
I had a Lexus LS which was pretty much exactly the size of the A6 Avant and there were moments I cursed my car's size.
The A4 is a great midsize though, more practicality than a hatchback without being a big car. I love mine.
I ran a C7 version until it had over 150k on it and then my father in law ran it until 178k, with the only thing going wrong being the swirl flaps on the manifold (a well known weakness on the V6 tdi)
These things will go 95% of where a rangerover will go off-road which is more then enough for pulling a horse box, family camping, the kids sports day and the half inch of snow that we get in the UK once every 5 years.
Go up to the Highlands of Scotland and they are everywhere.
If you can find a 5 year old A6 allroad with 50k on it, you’ve hit the sweet spot for a used one 👍
It’ll put a smile on your face in dynamic drive mode as well.
Again, thanks for the Litre/10 km explanation. Never understood gallons per mile.
Nice car mate looks fresh great video as always
The best part is that this model is traditional Quattro with Torsen permanent 4 wheel drive with the 60:40 rear wheel bias power split.
Hello, these and the A4 quattros do not use Haldex, they use TORSEN.
Yes my mistake
Big fan, I have had a few A6 4x4 but never the Allroad, Really do like them
Always sound advice to make sure the car has been properly looked after with FSH, otherwise your Allroad could end up being Allgarage!
Haha exactly
Hi Matt I used to own an A4 Audi midnight blue in colour and green headlamps ! What a motor that was !!
There is no Haldex on these one. They use a torsen diff. They don't need a service (on paper). But new gearbox oil (where the torsen also is located) helped me for less quattro rumble when taking a tight corner at parking speed. (after 200.000km)
About the chain. To replace it, there is no need to remove the engine, only the gearbox (and a lot of other things...). Only on the BITDI it needs to be removed.
But for the rest, great review. Always nice to see reviews from "older" cars that are still pretty up-to-date for today's standards.
I own one model older Audi A6 Allroad and the next car I'll buy is this one :P Can't get enough of those audis :)
It's not Haldex.
It’s Torsen not Haldex. Dumkopf!
Yes yes yes. Yes. Of course. No explanation required.
I must admit I service mine regularly. It's gets everything when it needs it. Every 3 months it goes in and so far been faultless

A6 is proper Quattro. Not Haldex.

Nice collection

Great review Matt, I like these but prefer the A4 variant.
Also, I think the A4/5/6’s have a traditional Quattro system that doesn’t require servicing, rather than the haldex found in the A3/TT’s etc.
Not the modern ones I believe.
That's still better than most Eurovision entries.

I have a V90 and I find myself often underwhelmed by it. Great car and comfortable, but very expensive road tax, poor fuel economy, Volvo parts prices are very high and the build quality isn't 100%. It's also large, it feels too large around town and parking it anywhere is a nightmare. Perfect car if you do a lot of motorway mileage, but then fuel economy hits you, around 40mpg on a run.
