Here's my driving anxiety story. I had terrible driving anxiety, It was because I made a mistake when I was just started to drive and my ex fiance yelled at me to get off the driving seat. I knew deep down I had to keep on trying but I was forced to get off the driver seat. I was simply not allowed to drive my fiances car. Since then I was always worried that I would make a mistake again when I drive. I never thought that I could be a good driver in the traffic. I broke up with him and I bought my car a year later. I was shaking and getting dizzy from the anxiety. I was thinking that I would make a mistake again and no one will be there to stop me. But I told myself "YOU CAN DO IT. YOU'LL BE A GOOD DRIVER. NO ONE STARTS DRIVING PERFECTLY. EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES. YOU'LL DO IT. DON'T BE AFRAID. YOU GOT THIS." everyday. Was I good at driving? No. Did I stopped the traffic from panicking? Yea. Did I rolled my windows down and told people i was a new driver? Yes. Did I see mean drivers who drove into me? Yes. Did that make me stop driving? No. I watched RUclips videos on how to drive better. I really tried to get myself into uncomfortable situations so I could show myself there's nothing to worry about. I can handle every problem. I wanted to show myself that I was capable of driving. It took me more than 5 months. But now I feel confident when I drive. If you have anxiety just know you got this. Mistakes are okay. Don't worry about the what if's, focus on what you did. And what you want to do. ♡
Thanks to you for sharing your experience. It's an issue not everyone understands, and while work colleagues joke around me to never park near them or drive, it hurts a lot, and can degenerate into a panic attack when I'm behind the wheel alone now (got my licence last month and just freshly got a perfect beginner car). Building up the confidence over time is huge, I know how to drive and do drive safely, but gotta fight the mental hurdle and not overthink every single small mistake I made 🥹
My driving anxiety was only because of the instructors I came across. They were all qualified but had really poor teaching skills. I feel that having all the knowledge aint enough but also have great teaching skills and knowing the psychology of understanding and teaching students. Its hard to find instructors like you and some other Driving experts on RUclips.
My first instructor was brilliant starting me off he then turned a bit nasty at times. He used to do things that would confuse me. When I went on my first trial lesson with my new instructor I was totally different. I felt more confident. She took me on complex roads straight away. I said I wonder why my old instructor didn't. She said you were capable. She also never spoke unless she needed too. My steering was fine. My old instructor used to grab the wheel and all sorts.
@@hybridangel3403 my instructor almost has her hands on the wheel the entire time. Its understandable because she is probably afraid that her car will run out of control. And she also talks to me a lot, and expects me to process the info in one go. Gets very irritated when I make a mistake, increasing my anxiety in the process. I think the only time I was relaxed with my instructer was the first lesson. She also makes weird comments such as 'you are in the mood of crashing into cars today' 'press the bloody accelerator' 'Stop saying rubbish' etc. And yet she also says 'I will/am very patient' 😂 I think I may be a slower student or something. And im deciding whether I should be patient, and just contine with her. Or shall I change?
I’m on my 3rd instructor the first one was hard to understand her bless her, her car was also sooo old my ankle was hurting after. The second one again bad English but I could get some of it, however his work ethic was terrible he used to make me wait in the car whilst he goes into his house and eat. He never used to tell me where to go, last minute he’d tell me to go right or left making me panic then he’d also put his hands in my vision on a round about. And was constantly on the phone (overall asshole of a instructor). I’ve finally got an instructor that sensed my nervousness and no confidence but he reassured me and made sure I knew where to go at all times and was constantly aware of what I was doing. 🥲🥲🥲
you are such a wise, lovely and kind person Richard. I've had a lifelong anxiety disorder (and I'm talking about, full blown housebound for several years from it). Almost all of what you've said can not only be applied for driving, but anxiety and life in general. Bless you, Richard. You're a king amongst men! edit: 6:45 LOL
@Tuna1989 that really sounds so beautiful and when I read your words I had tears in my eyes. Bless you, it is so wonderful to hear that Richard's videos are helping you in your life. Thank you for sharing your experience here-it is really touching & so beautiful 😇
Thank you a lot for this. I'm currently learning to drive. My anxiety tends to kick in on Roundabouts, everything else I am okay on. But thank you for this, it's nice to have someone who understands driving anxiety is real and it does exist.
I’m in Australia and had my driving test today (upgrading from an open auto license to manual to become a paramedic), I woke up at 3:15am super stressed and decided to search a RUclips video about manual car’s and found your channel, safe to safe I passed smoothly without stalling once and I have you to thank in those final hours leading up to the test! Thankyou!!!
Yeah when I first started stalling at lights or hill starts I’d look out the mirror and see traffic and panic but now I don’t worry but my test is July 13th and starting to overthink things 😂
I'd just like to say that my driving instructor told me that I was a really fast learner and I do everything on my own without him telling me to do it, and I'd just like to dedicate that to you and your videos. They've helped me a lot and it's only been two weeks♥️♥️
Man, you are doing the best driver content on the entire RUclips💪. Your videos always informative and helpful. I am not from the UK, but through watching your videos I’ve learned many useful things that help me driving me my car in the capital of my country. Hello from Ukraine, Kyiv city. Thanks a lot for your content. By the way I have been driving for a 4 years now, and your advises still helpful for me. I agree that even experienced drivers facing anxiety sometimes and it’s okay. I wish you 1M subscribers on the RUclips!👍 Keep it up!
I've been watching your videos for a few weeks now.. over and over ... and over again! :) I'm an older driver, have had a license from EU for 30 years now.. but never really drove. I usually cycle or take public transport.. but it's limiting, and I would love to have some more independence to travel. Over the years, I've had moments where I decided to change things and take some lessons.. I'd do around around 10 lessons, then the instructor would tell me "You can drive. You only need to practice", but I never did. I am absolutely terrified of getting in a car by myself. Cue to 2023.. turning 50.. I decided this was my time. I've booked some driving lessons .. and even decided to buy a car straight away (a friend was leaving the UK and I thought I'd snap his car going cheap). After 9 hours of recent practice (plus all the hours watching you) , I took the car out today for the first time, and roped in a friend to come with me to calm my nerves. I made SO many mistakes.. it's been hard to focus all day since then. It was the first time driving "my" new car, and I fell apart. I made mistakes I've not made in the instructor's cars.. it's like a cloud comes over me! My feet were everywhere.. I went into some dead ends by mistake and practically had a fit coming out of them... the poor clutch got pounded on like crazy.. it was a blur of idiotic moves. My poor friend kept his cool, but I'm sure he went home to pour himself a stiff drink! And so I come here.. and listen to you, and try to change my mental block. THANK YOU, Richard, for all that you do. I can't pay you.. but I usually watch the ads till the end so I guess it's a little help ;)
My first driving instructor, although nice before and after lessons, gave me serious anxiety! I was learning whilst at university so couldn't practice outside of lessons so progress was a bit slow. The instructor would constantly get frustrated and shout at me if I couldn't remember anything and would always hit the steering wheel whilst I was driving. He'd even tell me how his other students could pick things up really quickly. Left my lessons in tears and called it quits after 6 sessions. That was 3 years ago and haven't been able to take up lesson since then. That first experience seriously knocked my confidence and escalated my nerves and anxiety when it came to even thinking about taking up lessons. That being said, Im so glad to have found this channel! These videos are giving me a lot more confidence and reassurance about driving again!
Having taken lessons over 20 years ago, taking a test (in London) and failing and giving up, I decided to start driving again. I started taking driving lessons again, I was rather anxious at first, then started to relax. I even had this stupid old woman honking her horn when I was on the road, but I didn't care about her, and breathing deeply and just having a 'let's do this' attitude has helped me. Also just concentrating on the smaller steps (such as braking better than last lesson, or freaking out less compared to the last lesson at a quiet junction, or freaking out less about other motorists compared to the last lesson) and seeing how each lesson I progress is helping far better than comparing myself to over 20 years ago, and wasting time thinking 'how did I manage to get on a roundabout?', 'how did I manage to take a driving test?' etc. I now see myself as a new learner driver starting from the beginning, and it's helped me progress.
I've been driving since 1975 and in my job (now retired) also riding motorcycles all over the UK and continent and feel anxious at times especially now that I don't drive or ride as much as I did, and get anxious just before a long drive, but I try and relax as I start off and feel better after an hour or so after setting off and get into the drive.. But, I must say your videos do help me with a refresher and boost on certain aspects of driving after all my years...thankyou Richard 😉
Brilliant videos - I’m an older learner (49) and have had terrible driving anxiety. Your content is superb and is helping lots with my learning, thank you. Jules
Do things in your own time Jules, be aware of where other cars are but don't worry about being in the way. All drivers are, in fact I was in the way of someone today in the supermarket car park. Accept it, focus on your own plans for the day. We share the road and we all have to wait for each other.
Passed my test on one go but still very new to driving and doesn't drive much, so still anxious and this video really helps! Acceptance, exercise, etc, great advices!
I can't tell you how much this has helped me. I have my driving test in March (5th test overall, first in an automatic, first in about 10 years!) and I am so, so scared. I'm waking up in the night worrying, or having dreams of being on the test and failing dramatically (as in, causing an accident or worse). It's even got to the point where I'm scared on my lessons because I'm so frightened of letting myself or my instructor down. Your tips have been invaluable. Thank you so much.
I've held a drivers license since 1998. I despise driving and everything about it and only do it when absolutely necessary. Above all, it bores me. I suppose some were born to drive and others were born to be driven. Anxiety? Yes, I have that when I get behind the wheel of a vehicle too. If you are not anxious at least to a small degree then there is something wrong with you, because on the road you are surrounded by morons who have had bestowed upon them a responsibility they should never have been granted. I am delighted however to see there are some such as yourself that are enthusiastic about this horrible but yet necessary pursuit and I moderately reassured that roads are a slightly safer place as a result of your tuition.
Once in my driving lessons I said "look at that moron turning in a forbidden place". My driving instructor looked at me and said "most people know what to do with the car, and they're aware they are pushing boundaries. He got his drivers license, what he does with it is his responsibility. Your responsibility is to stay safe and expect people to push boundaries constantly." And I said "but it's not fair and it's illegal." His reply was "yes, so how does that change your behavior?". What happened after that is I started seeing that most people actually know what they're doing and whatever they do "to me" is a normal part of driving and is an opportunity to learn. I also realized a lot of people were quite accepting with me being slow and making mistakes. That was the first time I enjoyed driving and now I love it.
Bless you so much honestly. I recently passed my test but after a situation with a tailgater who just kept on beeping his horn at me, etc, my anxiety and confidence got hit so badly. Thank you so much for your videos, they are honestly helping my confidence again :)
Thank you for yet another really useful video. I keep going into lessons, thinking "today I am going to make no mistakes, check the mirrors all the time, signal perfectly, etc." and then my instructor puts me through the heavy traffic in Glasgow west end on a sunny day (cars, cyclists, pedestrians, and waaaay too many range rovers for those tight double parked streets) and we have much cause for discussion.
Try not to set expectations so high, it doesn't usually help and only adds pressure. Just take one moment at a time and try to enjoy learning. Accept you will get plenty wrong and you'll probably get less wrong.
Does anyone else also feeling anxious especially when passing another car ( do you also feel like your heart beats are racing up, heat and maybe even swallowing issues too?). I really used to enjoy driving and I know that feeling is still there. I really believe we will eventually kick these anxious feelings. So stay motivated ^^
Having a good instructor helps a lot. The one who will not yell on every mistake that you make. Because its really scary to start with add the pressure your instructor is giving you
Hi Richards, I have passed my test yesterday with score 111 out of 115. I am from NSW, Australia. Thank you, your vedios helped me a lot. I request to upload more vedios on lane changing. Specially getting decision about lane change with small bubble convex mirror on both side wing mirror.
Thank you for watching and congratulations on passing! Also, thank you for your suggestion, I don't use stick on blind spot mirrors but this video may help: ruclips.net/video/L59Bl3rQTA4/видео.html
Hey Richard... I really like your practical and no-nonsense driving tips and techniques... I have lot of your your videos during my driving test preparation and I'm glad to share that I passed my driving test last week in first attempt with just a couple of minors... there were many things which I actually followed from your videos and I must admit they were just perfect for me... So thank you very much for all your work and pl continue to share those fine tips... god bless...!! (I usually watch all the videos without signing in, but today just to express my gratitude I first time logged in on RUclips!!)
I started learning driving a week back, and I kind of used to stall while applying brakes and then moving. This continued for 3-4 days with no improvement as I thought I’d never understand clutch. I saw your videos including this and clutch control and today I did not stall even once! I was confident, thanks 😀
Ive passed my test 4 weeks ago i still watch your videos i found i get a bit anxious on busy roads but i took your advice from the driving test anxiety video about enjoying the driving process its helped a lot
Man i love you. You have no idea how much your videos have helped me with the beginning stages of driving manual, and ocercoming my driving anxiety. Il make an edit of this comment when i get my licence!
I honestly relate to this so much and I’m so grateful to come across this. Due to bad experience from previous instructors I began dreading my driving lessons, I’d tell my family I don’t want to go but I had made the mistake of paying for block lessons. He used to not tell me where to go in time and I’d panic, stall, oversteer, steer too fast, he used to put his arm in my vision in roundabouts and when he wasn’t being a nuisance to my driving he’d sit their on his phone and not pay attention then at the end of it tell me I done so much wrong (like not checking mirrors, but if he was looking he would have seen I was). My confidence was shattered and anxiety came when driving but he some how also made me feel like I’m terrible driver and made me have an expectation of myself that I couldn’t achieve (mainly because of his teaching). But I’ve found an amazing instructor now that only brings me confidence within the second lesson he was training me for my test saying my driving etiquette is good standard for a safe driver, however, I am still affected to this day. Before my driving lessons I have a nervous breakdown every time it makes me worry how I can tackle my test 😞😞
My driving instructor showed me a few videos to help understand where I was struggling and everything what I can say that all videos are very helpful, now I can find everything what I need any time..Thank you a lot for that!
I didn't even know that there was a term for how I feel every time I get behind the wheel even though I have a drivers license for over a year now😅 Thank you for this, greetings from Greece🌞
Well done for this video. I don’t drive all the time and have recently had to car share. Can be hard to explain to people why after so many years of driving I get anxious. I recognise I need to go for many short drives in company to get my confidence up.
Thank you very much for your wise advice, Richard. It really helped me to pass my driving test - in Germany-, especially how to overcome my driving anxiety.
I just passed my driving test just a week ago tomorrow. I'm nervous to drive, I'm hoping I can overcome it. I'm always overthinking about the what ifs. I should look back at my driving test and turn everything into a positive and say to myself if I passed that without no help, I can drive my own car. Appreiate your video.
Teaching like driving is a skill,i had no problem with Mastering an automatic but dreaded a manual, it was only through persistence i started becoming better, my instructor was horrendous
Learning to drive a manual transmission has given me driving anxiety during my work commute because it’s necessary I get to my destination and I tend to make more mistakes then over a casual Sunday drive. I find a late night drive without the stress of traffic and alittle practice in an empty parking lot to be a total reset for the day to come. Nothing is worst then making mistakes in rush hour traffic and starting over from that the next day. Go for a calm night drive and ull go to bed with some confidence for the next day
Your videos literally come out at the perfect time haha, do you speak to my instructor? 😂. In my last lesson yesterday, my main issue was being anxious and hesitating too much, holding up traffic. Thank you for your videos man 🙂
I only ever had driving anxiety during my time learning, and especially with the test, which is surprising because I'm normally cool-headed in test environments. I think its something to do with the constant observation in the learner driver envrionment, whether that be instructor, examiner or fellow road users. But once I had my license (after a few failed tests due to said anxiety) I was fine on the roads by myself. I share this to say don't feel discouraged due to nerves in that envrionment, there's a decent chance they won't extend into your future driving.
Thank you for this i am such an anxious learner my fear is messing up and my instructor thinking i'm stupid!! I feel less alone feeling this way now! 🙂
@@ConquerDriving thank you i have had many lessons but sometimes a lesson will go ok and other times i am just so anxious and i obsess over getting things wrong but i am not giving up!
Thank you so much for these brilliant videos, I’m looking forward to part 2! If you’re taking ideas for videos, by the way, I think one on overtaking cyclists could be really useful.
Cracking vid as always. I don't suffer with dirivng anxiety (only very occasionally am I on edge about it), but think this video (and the following ones) might help me help someone else who does have problems with this.
I'm close to the end of my driving journey and my anxiety is somehow worse than at the beginning. There was one time I made a mistake (or multiple, I stalled 6 times at a traffic light and had to switch seats with my dad to get away lol! Cried so much when I came home) and I feel like I'm always taking that with me. I've never struggled with anxiety before and still notice how my stomach tightens and my heartbeat rises when I have to stop uphill at a traffic light. Though I try to relax, it's really difficult. However I do enjoy driving. I get really anxious before but while I'm driving, as long as I don't stop uphill, I get such a boost from it. Really sucks that mistakes (which I'm expected to make) can get to me like that
As I said in previous comment, try to accept getting things wrong, you only worry about it if you care. If you accept you will drive badly you may relax more which will help. Most people in your shoes have skill but they don't have the right mindset.
I've struggled with anxiety for awhile but I didn't think it'd affect me during my driving yard test because I was doing well and I was very confident. However I messed up during the alley docking and my heart began to race because I thought I failed but I didn't. But that feeling stayed with me and I could notice I wasn't ok after that. What hit the nail on the head for me and messed up my mind completely was when the instructor told me not to mess up, I had to be perfect because I made too many mistakes. I did the parallel park fine but failed the incline start tremendously and I really wanna cry coz it's that painful. I really hate failing, hate this anxiety.
It's OK to get it wrong, try not to let it affect you too much, stay strong, keep thinking forwards and keep trying. It's what the best of us do. Failing is part of success.
Thank you! I am qualified my friend is going to come out with me. Getting an instructor for confidence is difficult. Much happier driving an automatic. Feeling like I am no good at things in general has not helped either.
Something it’s taken me years to accept as true, and even cherish to a degree: if any one person can do something, any other person can too. Welding, painting, driving, swimming underwater, cutting hair, you name it. Keeping a pace that you’re comfortable with and managing morale are very important for learning anything, and coping with anything. Accept also that some things may take a long while to “get”. I’m a roofer that’s afraid of heights, an animal remains removal specialist that loves animals, a 26 year old life-long cyclist and bike mechanic learning to work on motor vehicles while learning to drive at the same time, and much more besides. Don’t sweat driving, and moreover, you are quite good at things in general. You’re a human after all! And we’re very good at adapting and learning. Just give it time and be easy on yourself when you make a mistake, or are unsure of how to proceed. That’s where the learning happens.
Hi Hybrid Angel, I recognise your name, I think you've been watching my channel for a while so thank you. The key to getting good at things is not giving up, keep at it and you will get there.
I am so glad I have found this video!! Thank you so much I have only watch 4 minutes of it but it has made me feel better already!! My anxiety its through the roof when I'm behind the wheel it is unbelievable!! Really wise words, I havnt passed my test yet but it is booked for November and I had my first lessons last friday, well my first lesson for about 5/6 years, I ended up losing my mother and I could pass my theory, I just gave up but i have passed my theory now and I'm giving the driving a go again. Thanks for this video, I wish you could be my driving instructor lol you seem brilliant and down to earth 😁
During my first test, the examiner was very rude and kept shouting at me for most part of the test. I had the same examiner two more times but had no such issues (I requested my instructor to sit with me during the test). But because of my first impression with him I get extremely anxious whenever he is the examiner. Today I failed for the fourth time. I am clueless what to do coz I never fail my mock tests leading up to the actual test. Thank you for these videos. Hopefully I'll pass next time.
Soooo much needed and important video, even more important due to pandemic when people developed different types of anxiety, thank you very much 👏👏👏 Looking forward to see part 2 🙂 Like the thumbnail as well 👍
I've just got back from Westonzoyland Airfield. I drove our car around a fair few times, stalled once and got up enough speed to get into fourth gear! My brother also had a go at it, he drove around a few times and also stalled once. He managed to get into third gear on one of the straights (it was an oval-ish circuit). It was really fun, I want to go again!
I love your videos ive been learning since 2020 i moved town from Wolverhampton to Kent so had to learn a whole new to have new test centre route, my instructor directed me to the wrong driving test centre then by time we got to correct one, it was too late ive since bought a house which is in a different part of Kent so new instructor again so feel anxious told them ive had two failed tests in Wolverhampton and one i couldn't take, and now have a test booked for end of April so have 5 months to learn route, which makes me anxious and feel im gonna be told you can't take your test but been learning since 2020 and i feel i don't need to learn much more now but keep up with skills I've learnt. So hopefully ill be ok to take the test as i feel its best thing to do, but still feel anxious. Ive been told im a good driver, but i do mske mistakes which makes me feel worse. I hope i do pass one day or soon. I can only afford once a week driving but im also going to start going out in my husbands car as im insured on his car now. Sorry for the long message just wanted some advice although not a beginner learner.
Sorry i meant i had a test booked in Kent for October but was directed to wrong test centre got to correct one too late, so since moved to another part of Kent so new instructor again which mskes me anxious as got to let them know all i know and don't want to go backwards after all this time learning.
I am quite nervous when I am learning to drive, sometimes I am fine but when I drive on roads I do not know, I make a lot of mistakes, I just go to pieces. My poor driving Instructor, he has got a lot patience with me, we do try to joke about situations. My stomach turns over, I feel shaky, but I do get over it. I just do not know what I am really nervous about to be honest.
Hi Lindsay, you're not alone, other people feel the same way. It usually just takes time and patience from you and your instructor. Take it slowly and your confidence will gradually grow. There is no quick fix as far as I'm aware.
I passed a year ago and didn't drive now just been given my 1st car and my anxiety is through the roof 😢. All the questions can I still do it. Do I know how . Am I in the right gear what do. When do I change. It all goes through my head
It was 2 weeks after I got my driving license I was in traffic moving slowly when I bumped into a cyclist, I couldn't get that out of my head for the last few months, There were no injuries involved, the cyclist was okay and I was okay, but I just don't want to touch that steering wheel again. This video helped.
Driving is scary but its also really fun which is my main motivator and my instructor who I cant thank enough, I just hope one day I can do it without being drenched in sweat 🤣
I have this constant fear of being involved in an accident. Just the thought of it gives me anxiety. I'm confident with my driving skills, but I know a few people who are "by-the-book" defensive drivers and still got involved in an accident just because the other person in the other vehicle just got a little bit careless.
Every class I have with my instructor, he’ll tell me millions of mistakes mistakes that I made. It does increase my anxiety but on the other hand I know this is his job is to tell me what I have done wrong so I will take a note on my head and correct it next time. My another massive anxiety, it’s come from a busy bro road. The roads are full of trucks, cars, bicycle, motorbikes. I’m worried that I will bump into any of this vehicle or precious life. Even though some pigeons on the Driving path . I just worry I would destroy any beautiful life. Which nerve racking me . I remember I enjoy driving when the road was so empty in my first class. Until the second class , the route was changed to a area with more cars and people. I started to get really nervous 😩. Couldn’t really enjoy it
There is always risk in everything we do, it's important to try your best but accept that you can't guarantee anything. It's part of life. Try to be positive and enjoy driving, driving badly is normal when you're learning, you get better with practise and learn from your errors.
@@ConquerDriving Yeah Ikr you have a job too. But I feel like sometimes you uploaded 1 video on Monday and then the second part on Tuesday, that's not a problem anyway. 😉
I've been driving for almost 2 years (after passing) and i've only driven on the motorway about 5 times for very short durations like 1 junction long. I have the excuse that it's the small 1ltr car that struggles with speed down the slip road but i know once i upgrade (hopefully towards the end of this year) to a bit of a faster car, i will still not want to drive on the motorway. I know i'm going to have to get use to it at some point.
A more powerful car certainly makes it easier. Confidence normally comes with successful experience. The key is to keep trying when you're less successful as most people are when they lack experience.
In Turkey you have to know how to drive from birth if you don't and if you make mistake even if you are learner in a driving school (it is unnecessary waste of money) your instructor will hate you, will shout at you, and if you complain you won't get your license and it costs almost monthly living wage of a family of three. So tell me about Driving Anxiety
Oooo I needed this video a year ago when I started out driving. I to suffered from anxiety that had me made a turn at the doctors. My main worry was hills and to make things even worse there is a hill with a robot on my way to work. I used to get a shock through my body just thinking of this hill and prayed everyday that the light would be green and that I didn't have to stop and do a hill start. 😂😂😂😂. I'm doing much better now lol.
My instructor was the complete opposite of what i needed but everyone in my family said he was great. Unfortunately, I was the only one in my family with really bad road anxiety and so his methods didn't help me as much as I wished. He did the 'throw a kid in water and they'll learn how to swim' method...which was probably the worst thing he could have done. I was prone to blanking out and not pressing pedals i needed to so when he threw me onto a highway on my 3rd lesson ever, I completely hated it. Instead of being encouraging, he told me "you're the most panicked person I've ever been with" which......didn't help....and ill admit, he was good with my brother, sister in law and my friend, but my anxiety was so bad that his attitude didn't encourage me at all and its why i stopped driving. I was also learning a manual at the time and with my anxiety, i COULDNT get a grasp of it, so after a massive breakdown to my mum, ( because that's how much driving scared me where id cry just thinking about it) I convinced her for me to do auto first. Its now been like 2 years and Im gonna try again. I used to have anxiety attacks days before the lesson but its the morning of and im only feeling a tiny bit anxious, but that's normal. Thank you for being the voice i wish i could have heard in the car
I worry even before getting in the car. I am a new driver but an older driver(50) . I have even started to explore hypnotherapy to help with anxiety. If anyone knows one please let me know. Any more tips for older drivers would be great.
I recommend thinking about the reasons you feel the way you do and challenge them. There is a certain amount of acceptance that's needed for one to feel relax. Lots of small trips is better than few big ones.
I stress before every lesson 😅 and i guess i am afraid of making mistakes and forgetting stuff while driving 🤷🏻♂️ might have to stop having a coffee before every lesson to improve my concentration. That might help 😀🤷🏻♂️
But I told myself
"YOU CAN DO IT.
Well said.
Building up the confidence over time is huge, I know how to drive and do drive safely, but gotta fight the mental hurdle and not overthink every single small mistake I made 🥹
When my father says let's go ride... My heartbeat rises 😐
What a coincidence...me the same...but after I get on the road I don't feel anxious anymore😂😅😅
You're not alone, I'm sure many feel the same. Experience usually brings confidence.
Same. I really struggle with driving anxiety as well
Same! 😭
Yep I can drive with my friends no problem but the panick sets in when it's family
That roundabout scene with ambition and confidence deserved an oscar.
😂
Ambition and confidence need more skits randomly appearing in the regular videos ahahahah
I'm afraid the qualification and training process to be an instructor is poor. You have to learn on the job.
And yet she also says 'I will/am very patient' 😂
I think I may be a slower student or something.
It really always comes down to bad instructors. Not only for me, but many of my friends and family experienced the same.
you are such a wise, lovely and kind person Richard. I've had a lifelong anxiety disorder (and I'm talking about, full blown housebound for several years from it). Almost all of what you've said can not only be applied for driving, but anxiety and life in general.
Bless you, Richard. You're a king amongst men!
edit: 6:45 LOL
I'm very sorry to hear that, it must be hard, keep working at it one step at a time.
@Tuna1989 that really sounds so beautiful and when I read your words I had tears in my eyes. Bless you, it is so wonderful to hear that Richard's videos are helping you in your life.
Thank you for sharing your experience here-it is really touching & so beautiful 😇
I was just googling " how to deal with driving anxiety" a few minutes ago and now I see this. Thank you, a much needed video! 🙏🙏🙏
Screw driving, can't I just hire you as a life coach?
😂 Thank you.
😂
We know what for 😂😂😂😂😂
I had loads of anxiety before the test but i watched this and it allowed me to pass with only 1 minor fault. Thank you for the advice. :)
I'm happy to hear the video helped 😊
Thank you a lot for this. I'm currently learning to drive. My anxiety tends to kick in on Roundabouts, everything else I am okay on. But thank you for this, it's nice to have someone who understands driving anxiety is real and it does exist.
I’m in Australia and had my driving test today (upgrading from an open auto license to manual to become a paramedic), I woke up at 3:15am super stressed and decided to search a RUclips video about manual car’s and found your channel, safe to safe I passed smoothly without stalling once and I have you to thank in those final hours leading up to the test! Thankyou!!!
Congratulations on passing and I'm very happy to be helping people so far away!
How much I needed this, I've come a long way, I got over my fear of stalling and hill starts, all Thanks to you
Yeah when I first started stalling at lights or hill starts I’d look out the mirror and see traffic and panic but now I don’t worry but my test is July 13th and starting to overthink things 😂
@@reubenkirby3835 all the best
I'd just like to say that my driving instructor told me that I was a really fast learner and I do everything on my own without him telling me to do it, and I'd just like to dedicate that to you and your videos. They've helped me a lot and it's only been two weeks♥️♥️
I'm very happy to hear that.
Thank you, I'm happy to hear you find the videos helpful.
I've been watching your videos for a few weeks now.. over and over ... and over again! :)
I'm an older driver, have had a license from EU for 30 years now.. but never really drove.
That's really great to hear! Thank you for watching and I hope your confidence grows. There is a super thanks but if you're ever feeling generous.
It's a hard job being an instructor, it sounds like you need someone else who may be able to help you more.
Same here!! And I've got a lesson booked next Friday ... my first in many, many years!
I got my license last week. Thank you for the inspirational content Richard!🌹🤟👍🙏🇿🇦
Congratulations on passing 😊
🇿🇦🇿🇦
I hope it goes well. Try to take the pressure away by understanding you can do it again.
Thank you for your compliment 😊
@@ConquerDriving The back handed ones are always the best.
Once in my driving lessons I said "look at that moron turning in a forbidden place". My driving instructor looked at me and said "most people know what to do with the car, and they're aware they are pushing boundaries. He got his drivers license, what he does with it is his responsibility. Your responsibility is to stay safe and expect people to push boundaries constantly."
And I said "but it's not fair and it's illegal." His reply was "yes, so how does that change your behavior?".
What happened after that is I started seeing that most people actually know what they're doing and whatever they do "to me" is a normal part of driving and is an opportunity to learn. I also realized a lot of people were quite accepting with me being slow and making mistakes. That was the first time I enjoyed driving and now I love it.
@@floriancazacu4504 Let's hear you say that after one of them has run over your dog in full view of your 4 year old.
The thumbnail is....is precious
You are not alone, I've heard others say similar. I hope you find your confidence again soon, try to rationalise your worries.
Having a good instructor helps a lot. The one who will not yell on every mistake that you make. Because its really scary to start with add the pressure your instructor is giving you
I have my 3rd test tomorrow. Watching your vids to prep. Hoping so bad tomorrow is finally the day I get my license. 🤞🏽🙏🏽
Good luck 🤞

ive got bad anxiety sometimes so hope this vid may help
I'm very sorry to hear that, it's good that you've found an instructor who can help you. Try to forget about the past and move forwards 😊
@@ConquerDriving thank you 😊

Congratulations on passing!
My driving instructor showed me a few videos to help understand where I was struggling and everything what I can say that all videos are very helpful, now I can find everything what I need any time..Thank you a lot for that!
I didn't even know that there was a term for how I feel every time I get behind the wheel even though I have a drivers license for over a year now😅
Thank you for this, greetings from Greece🌞
Can't agree more. I keep getting more and more impressed by your ways.
This is amazing . First time car buyer with generally crazy anxiety
Well done for this video. I don’t drive all the time and have recently had to car share. Can be hard to explain to people why after so many years of driving I get anxious. I recognise I need to go for many short drives in company to get my confidence up.
This and your part 2 video have been a massive help for me. Thank you so much!
Thanks so much for this video! I passed a few months ago but I’ve really been struggling with driving anxiety. It was much needed, thank you ☺️
My dude, you should have posted this last week, i really needed it back then
Thank you very much for your wise advice, Richard. It really helped me to pass my driving test - in Germany-, especially how to overcome my driving anxiety.
I'm very happy to hear that, congratulations on passing!
Keep practising, I hope your confidence improves soon.
Teaching like driving is a skill,i had no problem with Mastering an automatic but dreaded a manual, it was only through persistence i started becoming better, my instructor was horrendous
Thank u so much ❤️ I should overcome it n yes I need to stop caffeine before I start my car....U really helped a lot....this is what exactly I need...
6:25 love the little bit of humour you injected there haha
Thanks
Thank you for your videos man 🙂
This is so helpful, I get really anxious just before my lesson but I don’t let it stop me and to be honest once I’m driving, I’m fine 🙂.
Big thanks for this video! Anxiety is terrible but we can beat it!
Many people are anxious about learning to drive.

Thank you. It is a video I would like to do but it's hard to find cyclists on demand.
@@ConquerDriving hahaha I’ve thought that before and assumed that it might be the reason why there aren’t so many videos about it!
Very comforting. Comforted.
@@ConquerDriving awh thank you so much, I'm hoping I will pass lol. Thanks once again 🙂

Even though I passed my manuals yesterday, I still watch this as its entertaining XD

I have this constant fear of being involved in an accident. Just the thought of it gives me anxiety. I'm confident with my driving skills, but I know a few people who are "by-the-book" defensive drivers and still got involved in an accident just because the other person in the other vehicle just got a little bit careless.
An accident is definitely possible, but incredibly unlikely if you drive in a way to reduce your chances. I accept it may happen.
Even though some pigeons on the Driving path
What makes me nervous is pedestrians.
I notice them just when I'm really close to them and that's dangerous.
Part 2 "NEXT WEEK"?! NO 😭 Why not tomorrow? Your videos help so much, especially this kind of topic!
I'm trying to do one video a week, I find that challenging enough so trying to do multiple videos a week is even more so.
@@ConquerDriving Yeah Ikr you have a job too. But I feel like sometimes you uploaded 1 video on Monday and then the second part on Tuesday, that's not a problem anyway. 😉
I came here to learn how to drive; instead I became a much better person at the end of the video. 😃❤
Omg when ambition faded into the abyss 😢😂 soo accurate
6:39 this was brilliant
Robot is the South African term for Traffic light 🚦 😂😂😂😂
Lol when I saw robot I sommer knew you were South African. What should give you anxiety back home are taxi drivers. 😅
Yes taxi drivers can cause great anxiety🤭🤭

I have got my license in 2019 but still couldn't graner courage enough to hit the roads. Hope this series helps🤞
Maybe some refresher lessons will help you get into it.
You are a good man.appreciate your contribution
I stress before every lesson 😅 and i guess i am afraid of making mistakes and forgetting stuff while driving 🤷🏻♂️ might have to stop having a coffee before every lesson to improve my concentration. That might help 😀🤷🏻♂️
You're basically test ready now Marcin, have some camomile tea instead.
Loving your videos, wish I had you as an instructor 🤣. Sub earned
Thank you so much for your channel and your videos!
I like driving I got my test in 88 days but hoping to get in my practice in but I have only one a week and don't practice outside my hour lessons
Love this channel. Help me a lot. Thank you !
Great info, some instructors dont know how to teach I guess. Just horrible experiences. Hoping next one will be good
The qualification process to become an instructor is close to useless in my opinion.
